You may want to get one that is inexpensive for now, but you may also want to invest a few more dollars in a better one. You can get one for a bit more and it will measure your steps more accurately and will give you other information.
The treadmill will measure distance so your mile will be roughly 2000 steps. You can count the number of steps in a block, etc. and find out how far you walk when you are out walking. It won't take care of the little steps you take when at work or around the house, but it gives you a little more boost than just doing without.
You can try taking a blow dryer to your current pedometer to see if you can get it to dry out inside. Or put it in a bag with dry rice. There are ways to get the things to dry out.
