Posting my latest accomplishment and next event.....

Sunday 5/20 SUCESSFULLY completed the Portland, Oregon half marathon in the rain the whole time, with ALL the hills AND with the police stopping the runners on at least 4 occasions that I got caught in (others got caught 6 times) ......still had a new personal best by nearly 1 minute 30 seconds (YIPEEE). Now to finish prepping for the Vancouver, Washington half marathon (6/17) and then Seattle, Washington half marathon (6/23). Gunna rock it out!!

On a side note in the Portland HM competetitors guide my story of why I run was published (so very excited!) =)

Congrats to everyone else in their races/fundraisers completed and keep training for the next one. I am so proud of each and everyone of you!

I'll be doing a walk, with my husband, for ovarian cancer. It's only three miles, but it's to raise money for a good cause. That's the disease that end my grandmother's life too soon.

Thanks, Mandy, I only just saw that I didn't highlight it!
The wound came from my trousers. I've got a favourite pair of walking trousers, those with a zip because you can turn them into shorts. Unfortunately, the flap over the zip didn't turn over properly and a bit of zip cut into my leg from about 14 miles onwards. Even more unfortunately: I couldn't do anything about it ...

It is a lovely walk and you did soooo well. Not surprised the gravelly bit gave you a blister though, what was the wound?

I've highlighted the link to the sarsen trail for easy use......

Oops, nearly forgot to post here:

I completed the Sarsen Trail (26 miles from the beautiful stones at Avebury in England to the even more beautiful stones at Stonehenge) in 7 hrs 45mins, one blister and one wound emoticon

The first 11 miles were all up and downhill, which I normally don't like but this time walked without any problems at all. the next 15 miles were on a horrible gravel path which gave me the blister, but as I'm posting here - I survived emoticon

We were extremely lucky with the weather, a bit windy, but no rain and not too hot either.

If anybody like to see where this beautiful walk is, here is a link: http://www.wiltshirewildlife.org/sarsen-tr

My friend Jan and I did the 10 mile Pink Ribbonwalk around Scone Palace and surrounding area in under 3 hours today. Lovely day for a walk - sunny but with light breeze. Good well organised event - we're thinking about doing it again next year so it must have been good LOL

Such a wonderful achievement and having good weather (however hot) makes all the difference to the atmosphere doesn't it. Your blog pictures are brilliant!

When I retire................ well all the people I know who are retired seem to be working harder and longer than when they were working! Am impressed you can fit all these marathons in!

(wanted to do lots of emoticons, but they're not working!!) WooHoo and well done!

Hi All!

Did the Indy Mini Half Marathon yesterday. It was SO HOT and humid; temps in the 80s and humidity at 90%. About 20 degrees warmer than usual. The race organizers added misting stations and more "hydration stations". The big highlight of this race is all the entertainment along the way, as well as a lap on the Indy 500 speedway! Here's a link to my blog about the race:

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
ur
nal_individual.asp?blog_id=4868438

We finished in 3:21:15, which is a 15:34 average per mile. This was our 6th half marathon over the past 11 years. We'd like to ramp it up and do two per year now that I'm retired!

Mandy, some of the races we've walked are for charity but most are not.

As much as I enjoy walking the half marathons, I'm always glad when they're over!!!!

I'm doing a 10 mile Pink Ribbonwalk round the grounds and surrounding area of Scone Palace on May 12th with a friend. Then on 16th June my daughter and I will be taking part in the 13.5 mile midsummer night walk - a fundraiser organised by St Andrews Hospice. This is it's 4th year and is attracting more and more participants which is great.

Wow you do so many - I'm so surprised at how many of you take on these marathons on a regular basis - you're wonderful.

Travelgrrl - Are these for charity too? You're quite the pro now and must be so proud of yourself every time you commit and the achieve these goals. Wish you luck and safe walking, or is it running?

How is everybody else doing with their training?

I am walking the Indy Mini half marathon on May 5. Then I am hoping to do the St. Jude half marathon in Memphis December 1. I'd like to do two half marathons a year if I can...

I walked a full marathon in 2001 and it was TOUGH so now I just do half marathons. I've done 5 so far.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Had a couple of weeks of nice weather now it's cold again. While it was nice I was walking outside and I missed not going for my walk tonight. I have been really trying to be good and not miss many days of exercising. The only steps I have are the basement steps and they are old and rickety. I do work out on my wii and stablity ball and a lot of times I will use my hand weights while doing the ball. I am also hoping between the exercising and walking and healthy eating I will lose this extra weight that I put on after my husband died.

Again Thanks for the encouragement and the tips.

RJ, very well done on entering your very first 5k, you'll love the achievement and the atmosphere. So sad to read about your 8 wk old Gt Nephew. You've chosen a cause very close to your heart.

Training is best done in small goals. You've started off well, and you still have time to progress to further distances before June 3rd. These 5ks are usually on an even level, so as long as you can increase your stamina to stay the course you will be fine. Do you have stairs at home to walk up and down, this will increase your stamina through cardio. Sipping some water during your workouts will keep your muscles flexible and help to avoid stiff muscles as well as a quick warm up too of course. Don't want to stress cold muscles!

Also whilst you are restricted indoors, you could add some extra weight to your ankles to increase your muscle strength, then when you do get outside more, walking will seem like you are walking on air lol!

Good luck and keep stopping by with any questions and of course your progress.

I am new to Sparkpeople and found this thread and just had to post that I am doing my first 5K Walk on June 3 to raise money for Hemophilia. My Great Nephew who is 8 weeks old today was diagnosed with sever Type A Hemophilia at 4 days old. I am working out some at home and did walk almost 1.5 to 2 miles every day I could. Now the nasty cold weather is back so I am back to using my power walk types in the house to get ready for this walk. I just hope I am capable of walking 5K by then. I am open to suggestions for better training.

Carolkitties you are one dedicated marathoner! And what a wonderful cause. What was the recent half marathon you just completed?

Beth, walking a marathon is challenge enough but running ............. gosh congratulations on attempting your first and am sure you will be amazing and full of pride - its not long now though so keep us informed of your training progress.

Lois - Good luck on the Relay for life - is it a walking 5k? I did a 5k Race for Life 2 years ago, is it the same charity - Cancer? Is it your first ?

I'm walking the Sarsen Trail on the 6th May. It's a beautiful 26mile walk from Avebury to Stonehenge.
I walked it in 7.5hrs 10 years ago and vowed never to do it again.
Then, two years ago, I tried it again, did it in 7.5 hrs but was in a lot of pain towards the end and afterwards - and DEFINITELY NEVER EVER wanted to do again.
Then, this year ........ I was wondering ...... hmm, should I ..... do it again ...... and registered for half the walk. Then felt so bad about it, it just didn't feel right, so changed my mind and will now do the full 26 miles.
The word 'excited' springs to my mind at the same time as the word 'idiot' .......

Sometimes there are others with me but more often not - but I am never alone as Halleigh is with me in spirit every step of the way =)

And thanks for all your kind words....they mean a lot.

Yes I did read about your loss on your sp page, and whether you like it or not, you're an inspirational person.

You're an amazing woman. The rest of your family must be quite astonished at your ability to focus forward and proud of your commitment to your Daughter's memory. Do you always do these marathons on your own?

Thanks - it is my garden of life. I started doing the half marathons as a physical manifestation of dealing with the grief after my eldest child died in 08/2009. Each step is a step towards living, each "run" reminds me that this is never ending and in for the long haul, that success is in the process not for the line drawn on the road, there will be good days and bad days but need to keep moving forward, it is my therapy. I plan to do these forever and the tattoo to grow to eventually intertwine between some of my others and become a full body tattoo - wearing my garden of life ever day and the reminder to literally walk my talk =)

Thanks and I will definately keep popping up and letting you know how I am doing. My icon image is a tattoo that is growing - I get one flower for each half marathon completed - go for my 3rd flower this weekend since I just finished the race. And I LOVE that it was on mother's day - it was my best finish time ever - sounds like a great way to celebrate!

Well just keep popping by occasionally and let us know how your training progresses. I absolutely agree with the 'not winning' philosophy' - and I love how you use these marathons for your own growth, not to mention the motivation that the commitment must continue to give you.

Half nuts eh? LOL - I'll say.............. emoticon emoticon But loving it!

These are all half marathons - only half nuts LOL. Some have been fundraisers -
10/2011 was YWCA of Bellingham WA
01/2012 was Leukemia Society
03/2012 benefits some local charities to that region,
Portland is 05/20/2012 is linked to the cancer society I believe,
06/2012 in Seattle is with the Leukemia Society,
06/2012 is Vancouver WA and that is tied to some local charities in that region,
08/2012 is Pendleton OR and that is for some local charities to their region,
09/2012 is Bismark ND and for local charities,
then back to Bellingham for the YWCA in 10/2012.

I do them all for my own personal growth and at this point have gone from purely walking to walking and jogging them. I am no elite racer by any means - but it is not about winning - it is about the process and improving.

Good Heavens thats impressive! Well done for the 18th. What is the date for your Rock N Roll one? Is it a fundraiser? Its looking like you are improving from walking to jogging, is that right?

You are certainly someone who can help with other newbies doing their first marathons. I'm sure they'll have a few questions lol!

I can't get over your 9 marathons - wow!

I just finished the Modesto CA Half Marathon on 3/18/12. It is my 3rd half marathon and I am now training for the Rock N Roll Portland Half Marathon. I am currently signed up to do 9 half marathons from 10/2011 to 10/2012. I walked the first 2 and walked/jogged this last one. I plan to do the same with the upcoming HMs.

Hunt you down eh? Now there's a thought lol! No such thing as 'only' here my friend. 5k is a fab way to start achieving, so very well done and what a marvellous cause to - good for you.

I did a 5k for the 1st time two years ago, walking, and I was so pleased with myself, you will be too - you'll be so proud you did it.

How are you managing to train? during the day, eve? The nice thing is there is no 'race' its just at your own pace, you just have to finish, so you can actually enjoy the whole thing as you go along - you'll love the atmosphere too.!

Thats wonderful, good for you and your first one as well - Go Girl. You're right, you will feel so proud of yourself when you pass that finish line. Good luck this weekend and don't forget to stretch those muscles first and drink plenty of fluids to keep your muscles from dehydrating.

We'll follow your progress if you wouldn't mind keeping us informed of your training progress?

What is the Cleveland Rite Aid? I'm in UK................

I'm training for a half marathon (my first) - the Cleveland Rite Aid marathon, May 20. I'm still nervous - I have a long run of 8 miles this weekend (my longest to date). If I can get to 19, I'll feel a little less anxious, but I know I'll be so happy I did it once I cross thefinish line!

So many of us commit to marathons or fundraisers in our lives outside of SP. Please tell us what you are challenging yourself to do.

We would love to help you along with some encouragement and support. So many of the challenges are for good causes and recognising your efforts and achievements would be lovely.

So let us know what you are doing and when the event takes place.............
