Closing this discussion. I've have had too much ridicule and sarcasm for trying to promote a walking site which you don't need any special equipment.

aarp.stepuptobetterhealth.com/ has lots of sights. BUT you don't need an omoron podemeter or another site to "convert" steps to miles. It contains a list of "step conversions". But it is all in the past.

Thanks to those who have joined. It is a pleasure seeing all of you. I'll be posting on the
http://aarp.stepuptobetterhealth.com/ wall and to my sole mates.

Because I truly do care,
Marji

Today I reached Brooklyn College - OMG! I lived here!!

Established in 1930, set on a sprawling 26-acre campus, Brooklyn College offers both undergraduate and graduate studies in over 100 programs — arts and humanities, natural and social sciences, education, and business. Faculty includes Pulitzer Prize and Obie Award winners as well as world famous researchers and scientists. It is also known for being the first public coeducational liberal arts college in New York City.

Today I reached Fort Greene, again? I don't know - but I am still here, lol.

Once a predominant African-American neighborhood, Brooklyn’s Fort Greene is now a community with residents from all over the world. Home to several cultural facilities like Pratt Institute, Brooklyn Music School, and Brooklyn Academy of Music, it also embodies classic examples of mid 19th century architecture. It’s classified a Historic District.

Today I reached Brooklyn, my old stomping grounds!!

Originally a Dutch settled area, Brooklyn is New York City’s most populated and second-largest borough. The city continues to maintain its own unique art and cultural scene and has been the setting for many plays and movies. Brooklyn’s also famous for its bridge (built in 1883), museum (second largest in the US), and home baseball team (the Dodgers).

Still stuck walking across the bay. It's sort of crazy to "walk in the water". I found a way at home to walk 1,000 steps. Now doing it 10 times, hmmm maybe not, don't know. But did realize it takes me about 12-13 minutes to walk 1,000 steps.

I reached Jackson Heights

Jackson Heights, a Queens neighborhood known for its large South Asian community, is nicknamed Little India. Originally farmland, it was developed in the early 20th century into a unique blend of garden co-ops and private homes. Jackson Heights borders Grand Central Parkway, a short commute from midtown Manhattan.

I reached Co-op City

Co-op City is a housing cooperative established in 1973 along Hutchinson River in The Bronx. The sprawling complex houses 35 high-rise buildings and 7 townhouse sections, with over 50,000 calling it home. It also rents commercial and office units and includes schools, shopping centers, and parks.

10/6
I reached Crotona Park

Named after the Greek colony, Croton, this park sits on over 127 acres in south Bronx. Known for varied tree species, Indian Lake within brims with fish, turtles, and ducks. Crotona Park has one of the city’s largest swimming pools, tennis courts, and baseball diamonds as well as a well tended farm garden. Park rangers organize walking and learning tours.

I never knew the Bronx has so much to offer!! I have been to the Bronx Zoo - it is so big you cannot see it all in one day!!

I reached the Bronx Museum of the Arts

Opened in 1971, Bronx Museum of the Arts displays contemporary art over 11,000 square feet encompassing galleries, classrooms, and an auditorium. The permanent collection features more than 800 works of art from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, with special exhibits throughout the year such as the recent Road to Freedom (Civil Rights Movement photographs).

I reached the Central Park Zoo

At 64th street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan is Wildlife Conservation Society’s Central Park Zoo. Spread over 5 acres and designed around a variety of habitats, each features indigenous plants and animals like lemurs, bears, sloths, and snakes. It had humble beginnings as Central Park Menagerie in 1864; less than a century later in 1934, the area expanded into a zoo, with Tisch Children’s Zoo added in 1997.

A neat feature, how to add steps for daily activites without a pedometer.

When you go to the site, look down at the bottom and click on the link "step conversion", it will give you a list of everyday activities converted to steps.
Then when you take a day off from walking, you can still add steps to your route.

I made it to Little Italy today!

Cobblestone pavement and turn-of-the-century buildings are of part Little Italy’s charm and style. Set in New York’s Lower Manhattan community and once home to Italian immigrants, this street is known more for restaurants serving fine Italian fare than for former residents who started them. The street is busiest during September’s 11-day Feast of San Gennaro.

I actually went to Little Italy once! A dear girlfriend took me to the festival and I remember there was food and fun everywhere! I ate zeppole and they were awesome - until they cooled, lol. Think fried dumplings (similar to funnel cakes only not open/lacy looking), lol, sprinkled with powdered sugar! It was a fun day!

Staten Island Ferry

New York City offers visitors a free way to reach Staten Island: by ferry. The 5-mile, 25-minute ride provides expansive views of the city skyline, Lower Manhattan’s bridges, and New York Harbor. Passengers admire the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island from onboard its decks. Daily, 5 ferries transport approximately 60,000 passengers over 109 trips.

I can't count the number of trips I made every week as a child before the Verazano-Narrows Bridge was built! Every week I was taken to an Eye-Specialist family friend and he worked with my eyes! He lived in New Jersey and using the Ferry to cross was the only way to get there! Back then it wasn't only passengers but cars as well - the cars were on the lower level and we were allowed to leave the vehicle and stand on the upper deck! Such memories of a slower time!

Alice Austen House Museum

Staten Island’s pride, Elizabeth Alice Austen, was born in 1866 and became a renowned photographer. Her family home, Clear Comfort (the Alice Austen House), was built in 1690 and was her residence until financial circumstances forced her to move out in 1945. It was saved from destruction and restored in the mid 1980s into a free museum housing works of its former owner.

Since everyone else is doing New York - I switched trails. I am from Brooklyn, NY and learned something today! I have been through today's area but never knew that "kill" means creek! Sadly along the route we used we passed a huge landfill and "kill" was in the name! It certainly smelled like something died - really lots of somethings, lol.

Great Kills

Great Kills is a picturesque neighborhood on Staten Island, dotted with streams and rivers for which it’s named — “kill” is the Dutch word for creek or channel. Many restaurants once dotted this shoreline, but pollution in the area has reduced their numbers greatly. Verrazano-Narrows Bridge connects the island to Brooklyn, making Great Kills accessible to tourists and residents.

Hi Raylin! Happy stepping! I really like this site and the trails. I just started 4 days ago and I'm working on the New York trail :)

And I looked you up in "The Spark" :) I'm a highlighter/underliner when I read and I had even underlined your 'One day at a time, one pound at a time!' line when I read it quite awhile ago :) How cool for you to have made it into the book! Congrats on an awesome weight loss and a successful maintenance as well!

... I am RayLin Stephens
I am starting the Vietnam Route, today is Day 2 for me.
Today I reached:
Pitaya (Dragonfruit) Orchards

Pitaya is the fruit from a cactus species grown in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region, named dragonfruit for its deep pinkish-red exterior with green spikes. The plants are cultivated throughout the south’s rainy season — June to September — and ripe fruit is sold in floating markets. Large white, fragrant flowers bloom only in the evening, giving them the name Queen of the Night. The fruit forms 30-50 days after flowering, and each plant can be harvested 6 times a year.

Here are the various routes: (You can switch trails or routes anytime).

John Muir Trail ---- 337,580 steps

California’s John Muir Trail covers 169 miles of diverse alpine scenery from Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney. It runs through 3 national parks, forest service land, and designated wilderness areas of rivers, canyons, and mountains. Certain sections are accessible only by foot, making it one of the country’s most remote trails.

Cambrian Way ---- 535,640 steps

Considered one of Wales’s most scenic and challenging trails, Cambrian Way meanders through some of the country’s wildest regions. From ancient castles, Iron Age hillforts, and unique bridges to majestic mountains, cascading waterfalls, and picturesque communities, this 268-mile trail takes hikers on a rugged tour of breathtaking countryside

Dublin Trail --- 300,00 steps

Originally settled by Vikings, Ireland’s capital is a dichotomy of culture — steeped in ancient history as well as being a center of contemporary art, education, and industry. Winding through the city’s streets, this 150-mile route ventures by castle ruins, lavish estates, sculptures, distilleries and storehouses, lush gardens, and landmark pubs.

Viking Way --- 318,240 Steps

Established in 1976, this 159-mile walking path starts at the industrial town of Barton-upon-Humber, then winds through small country villages, by ancient cathedrals and abbeys, along scenic rivers, and past centuries-old castles before stopping at the Rutland reservoir in Oakham. The trail, named for the Danelaw, (Danish people who dominated during the 9th century Viking expansion) is marked with Viking helmets.

New York City --- 300,100 steps

New York City comprises 5 boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. aarp.10kaday.com This is a neat site. As you log your steps, it will show you different high lites along your route. Right now, I'm walking through New York City and surrounding area.

It also has a nice feature where you can have a "sole buddy" and see their progress and send them an email they will see when they log in.

It is AARP but membership is not required and you can set your start date any time after your registration date.

Please join me.
