What a great idea - and thanks for allowing late entries (*waves sheepishly*)!

Having finally started walking at least part way home from work, this is just perfect. The Tolkien milieu is certainly more positive than the other literary incentive I had recently (anyone read Steven King's "The Long Walk"?)

I can even make "The Hobbit" my next walking audiobook!

Good call. You could go with a character from the books. Rosie Cotton, Galadriel, or Eowyn might be good choices. Or you could make one up. Hobbit last names have a lot of compound words like Brandybuck, Proudfoot, or Hornblower, while female first names are usually flowers. Elvish names are tough. Sounds kinda pretty like Italian or French.

I guess I'm not much help, but I found a website that might give you some ideas. Check it out:

As much as reading the book might be better, I can barely find time to watch a movie. If I started the book I might be reading it for the next 2 years. The only time I sit and read a book is at the beach when the kids are in the sand. Even then I usually doze off and enjoy the sun.

I've not read the books but I intend to as I have heard this from so many people. I remember reading the Hobbit back in 9th grade and I loved it. I'll be reading the other three this summer.

Yeah, the movies were great, and actually followed the story pretty good. At least, compared to how other movies follow their respective books. But a 3-hour movie can never take the place of a 300 page novel. I started out a huge fan of the movies, but now that I finished all 3 books...it's all different.

And not just events are left out of the movie, but character development and all that cool stuff. For example, Butterbur (the owner of the Prancing Pony) is barely shown in the movie. His time in the book is brief, but he's a fairly well-developed character.

Sorry, I'm rambling on like my2. :) It's 1:30am and I'm at work.

KTTYERWG, I do drink lots of water. And it does help a LOT! However, for me it doesn't do much for the hungry thing. If I'm hungry and i fill up with water, it might help for 2 minutes. I do better if i sip water throughout the day.

But one thing I have found is that I start almost every meal with 8 ounces of V8 and 8 ounces of skim milk. That's only about 120 calories, and it does make me eat less.

Totally agree about reading the books. I bought a whole set for just under 5 dollars on amazon. Read through the first book. It makes a big difference in understanding where we are in middle earth.

The movie leaves alot out.

Jody totally understand about the conversation thing. This is just about the only thread I visit on this team anymore. So it's kind of nice to have some conversation going so we know who we're on this journey with.

Hi Maria. The movies were great! I loved them, and have seen all 3 of them about 10 times each. But there is absolutely NO substitute for the books. And especially as it pertains to our "Tolkien Walk". Even if you read the first book "Fellowship of the Rings" only once, you will start to understand what is meant by each stage of the journey.

I know people say this all the time, but you GOTTA read the book!! You'll love it!

Hey Jody,
drink lots of water. When I start to get hungry, I chug a great big glass of water and it fills me up so I am not so hungry.

And I walked 1.5 miles today :)

I wish I knew what I was looking at on my journey. I hear that tonight on TV they are playing Lord of the Rings. I really was hoping to watch it, but don't know if I'll be able to keep my eyes open after the long day. I really have enjoyed coming to this site and can honestly say that I am walking more becuase of it.

Sorry, just trying to start a little conversation here. I love this thread, and everybody here. But it seems lately all we've been saying is "I walked 2 miles today." Or "Boy, the weather is stinky." I just thought we could chat a while during our long journey.

Jody, I agree with the energy thing, and hungry thing, here's what I've been doing.

One A day All day energy vitamin. I was going to do the diet support, but then I got to comparing, this one has many more vitamins in all area's except one, so I went with this. The difference in my energy level (When I remember to take it) is incredible. unfortunately with all this busyness when I needed it most, I forgot to take it.

As far as being hungry all the time, I try to have low cal soups, and salads on hand, along with a little bit of lowfat protein That way I can eat and still not be in too much trouble, (again, this only works if you have the money to buy premade, or the time to make them up from scratch, also not my strong place right now.lol)

One of the classes I took at the convention was homeschooling on a budget. The lady talked alot about buying in bulk, and making things ahead of time (like one saturday a month) I used to do that, don't know why I got out of the habit, need to get back to that, so that I can afford to eat right, and still buy school books. (at least buy school books anyway)

Okay, I must be really tired cause I'm talking way to much. but too tired to go back and edit out the details.

Hi everybody. I was just typing an email and I thought of something. I wonder if the rest of you experince this also.

Since I've started "dieting"...(yes, i hate that word too, but i'll use to for now)...i've been tired and hungry all the time. I've been pretty strict on my calories since I started Sparkpeople. I am getting 1900-2100, almost every day. That should be plenty, but before I was getting probably 4000 or more. Yeah, that's why I was 305 pounds. :) And I'm now walking average of a mile a day. So I'm moving much more with 1/2 the fuel.

Like I said, I know these are the healthy amounts of food and exercise, but my body hates me. I'm tired and hungry all the time. And I want to eat eat eat. I would, too, except I'm seeing real results and I don't want to go backwards again.

Any thoughts on this? I'm sure I'm not alone in these things. Please post your experiences and/or advise.

Sorry all, I'm a slacker. I've been very busy. We had a big homeschool convention in our area this weekend. And I haven't kept up. I'm updating my charts right now. I'll try to be back in a little while with an update. Although it may not contain milestones.

I've been doing some revising of the way that I track the miles. Several of the people that aren't on this list anymore have moved on to phase 2 of this group, and I am keeping track of their miles seperately now.

Also some names are going to be disappearing, as they haven't reported in for over a month. I will keep the mileage they already have, and if they report back in I will put them back on the board.

I thought this way it would be easier to see who you are really competing with. (or for those of you who aren't competitive, who you're walking along with)

Hope this is okay for everyone. I just thought it made everything look a little cleaner.

I've finally been able to get back in there too with my moving. My pedometer is up and working again and that little thing is ticking away. Hopefully it won't break down again, I'll keep on plugging away until then. Hope everyone has great walking weather!

Hi everyone!
I haven't been able to get online much recently, but I've been a-walkin' away. Last Friday, I walked 1-1/2 miles, and Sunday I walked 1/2 mile. Today, I've already done ANOTHER 1-1/2 miles!!!! And it's still early!!!! I have to admit that I haven't been paying quite as much attention to writing down my food, but thanks to y'all, at least I'm keeping up with my exercise (and water!). So thank you, thank you, thank you, for keeping me honest and on-track!

Yeah, so much for the good weather. Snow in April?!?!? I haven't gotten out in a couple days now. I always walk with the kids, so it's tough when it's so cold. But summer "should" be just around the corner!

OMG Dave, you wanna talk wind well we had some heavy winds this morning. So I wake up in my tent, stiff and sore from the hike, and it's like 6 am. It was like Wizard of Oz. I thought the wind was gonna take that tent and me with off to see the wizard.

You would have laughed your *ss off watching me trying to single-handedly take down and fold up my tent.

The tent stakes had been torn right out of the ground while I was unconscious, so I'm holding the tent with one hand and trying to make my way around unhooking the rainfly, which is trying to fly off down a steep hill that I didn't want to have climb down to retrieve things from, so I'm holding on tight. I finally get the rainfly disconnected and I'm trying to fold/roll/stuff it into the tent bag, but the tent is still trying to escape, so I stand inside the door of the tent while wrestling the fly.

Then I realize if I just pull the tent poles out of the front the whole thing will collapse flat and be easier to manage. Duh. So next, I'm sitting on top of the collapsed tent trying to get the poles out and folded. Then came the folding of the tent. It looks like a wind-blown game of twister. Today, I too took the wind personally. BTW, shortly after I had finished wrestling that SOB into the bag...

If you guessed that there was a sudden lull in the wind you would be right. But camping is fun right? emoticon
