More squats this evening with some upper body work pulling out more weeds. All those Spring rains have brought not only flowers but weeds galore! Have been getting a good lower and upper body workout with more to come over the next couple of days and probably into the near future.
Are you getting a workout in the yard this season emoticon

Yeah the sun was finally shining and the temps were in the low 50s. Made a special point of getting home as early as I could and out in the yard to dig up weeds. Not sure how many squats I did but I could tell once again that when I work in the yard it is not the same as squats or leg press at the gym.

Was up early for work and am going to try a morning workout on Tuesday, which is not my thing but I have more yard work to get done after work. So going to try for an early night and am thinking positive thoughts that I will actually balance my sleep.

Hope you had a sunny day as well and were able to enjoy the outdoors and may Tuesday be more of the same.

Another cooler rainy overcast day, makes me just want to take a nap. Instead, made some soup to get warm and keep me upright instead of just snuggling under the covers. Seems like this is one of the colder Springs in the midwest. Will look forward to Monday when the sun is supposed to be shining again.
Are you experiencing a cooler than normal Spring emoticon Has it kept you inside more than you would like emoticon

Was a great putzy day inside with rain all day and low 40's. Out for dinner with a friend and I was telling my friend that I am not sure I could say exactly all the small things that I accomplished today but didn't sit down until about an hour before we went out for dinner.
Was an 'off' day for exercise but that was planned as was my meal out. I even budgeted for a drink at Starbucks, something I infrequently crave but know can pack a wallop of calories.
Was happy with the final tally on the nutrition tracker and brought half my meal home, so will be another great meal to eat on another day.
Do you pre track your meals out at a restaurant so no oops or surprises emoticon
Personally, I am always more on track when I know in advance and today I new before breakfast what I would be eating for dinner, so was easier to a lot calories etc.

Another cooler day, was sunny when I arrived home which made it seem a little warmer and now that I am inside with the heat on that darn wind makes it seem colder every time I poke my head out. Had wanted to get out doors for more yard work, so will need to bundle up and get the rain gear ready the way the sky is looking. Had hoped to attack those darn dandelions - they provided a great work out last Sunday. Lot's of squats which I could feel the next day.

Do you get a work out in the yard while performing yard work emoticon

Hope you have a great weekend with lots of sunshine emoticon and temperatures warm enough but not too warm to enjoy outdoor activities.

Might have put some of my herbs out too soon. This week has been primarily in the low 40s with some sunshine and some rain but lots of clouds. This has definitely been a cooler Spring that we normally have in the midwest. More days of exercising indoors than outdoors, but at least I have a back up when the weather just isn't nice enough to venture out.

Do you have a back up plan when your weather doesn't cooperate for your outdoor exercise routine emoticon or do you only exercise indoors emoticon

Errands all done yesterday which left today for exercise routine. Met the half way to one of my exercise goals today (end of summer is the goal date). Felt great and is a good reminder that some goals are not as obvious to see but overall help me to reach the BIG goal.

Have you set smaller goals that are helping you to achieve your BIG goal emoticon
If so that is great and keep working towards those goals, if not this is a great opportunity to help you make small changes that are manageable and help you get one step closer to your BIG goal.

My thought for today is to remember to give your loved ones a hug and to be glad they are in your life. A good friend had a close family member pass away, so while they are in no pain their is a sadness that they are no longer here in life.

An afternoon spent working in the yard - shoveling/digging with a lot of squats , all to remove weeds. Amazing how deep those roots go my arms got a work out pulling those more than a foot long roots out of the ground. The afternoons work was a birthday gift to a relative which I know they appreciated. Will be more of the same at my home on Sunday. Today was good teamwork by four of us. A good reminder of how a team supports one another, whether it is our SP team, a work or family team.
Have a great rest f the weekend,

Yeah it is here - Friday. Really like what I do during the work week, but also really like the weekends when more time to devote to family and projects. This weekend, will be helping a family member with their yard, so hoping the weather is as nice as last weekend.
The other thing with Friday is that it is one of my two weigh in days that I have alloted myself, I think about a month or so ago. It was hard at first to not weigh daily, but I needed a break from the up/down that was happening daily. Now if I find at the end of the day the nutrition tracker is right on then I expect either no change or a loss to be reflected and likewise if I am above numbers I expect (depending on exercise ) again either no change or a increase in number. So working in mysterious ways, I am always perplexed when the opposite happens - over eat and lose weight. Go figure! My take away however, from past experience is that to continue down that pathway in the long run it does catch up with me.

Have you experienced the craziness of the scale emoticon If so persevere with your goal of being healthier continue to track both exercise and nutrition and as those of us who have read blogs, articles etc from the 'successful 5 %ers' it will pay off in the long run.

Have a great weekend, enjoy some sunshine and emoticon to be a healthier you!

Here is a thought-provoking story, from the book Art and Fear, by David Bayles and Ted Orland that challenges the old adage that quality is better than quantity:

The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced; all those on the right would be judged solely on the quality of their work. His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the "quantity" group: fifty pounds of pots rated an "A", forty pounds a "B", and so on. Those being graded on "quality", however, needed to produce only one pot - albeit a perfect one - to get an "A".

When grading time came, a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the "quantity" group was busily churning out piles of work - and learning from their mistakes - the "quality" group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay.

The teacher's experiment reveals the power of taking chances and risking failure when you’re trying to achieve something of quality. Perhaps the fastest path to quality is through quantity.

Although Steve Jobs was quoted as saying, “One home run is better than two doubles”, it may be the other way around. Sometimes two doubles are better than a home run because you gain momentum and have another runner in scoring position.

The big debate with myself after a long day at work: exercise or just relax. Too nice outside to not spend some time in the fresh air, so a nice walk won out. As usual after about 10 minutes I was glad I had chosen to enjoy the evening outside and now an hour later I can relax (although I have projects that beckon).

Hope you had a Spring day that allowed you also to enjoy some fresh air and that you were able to get in some exercise to help you keep moving forward towards your goals.

Long day that is just settling down and after getting some sad news it made me think how thankful we have to be sometimes. I have my health and am able to work out and make choices about the food I eat, some times good and sometimes not so good. I have a dear person in my life that for the past 6 plus months those have not been choices they can make due to medical circumstances. Bad news about their health tonight gives me pause about the choices that I can and do make.

Have you had similar experiences in your life, those moments in time that make you think twice about what choices you have made emoticon

I hope you have not, but if you have I hope that they have been learning moments and a positive has come from the negative.

Tired brain so a short reflection of the day. Temps dropped with rain and no outdoor time today (even if there had been time). Did some volunteer work after the 'paid' job and then onto errands, which meant a late night to eat dinner. Don't know about the rest of you but I don't like to eat then feel like I will be heading to bed a short time later. Did feel good however, to get a few things checked off the weeks 'list' again tonight. Staying on track for tasks and I have read that if you are organized in other aspects of your life then health and nutrition follow suite as well.

Are you organized in all areas of your life or is their disorganization that carries over to being a healthier you emoticon

Another emoticon emoticon day which I didn't get to enjoy until the evening then the sun went down way to quick. Hope you are all having equally as good weather, I know we are headed for cooler temps but the plants are blooming as the temps continue to rise.
Thought I would sneak in a walk this evening but yard work beckoned before the temps drop and the rain falls within the next day or two. So instead of walking the neighborhood, I pushed the lawnmower at a fast pace which got my Heart Rate up sufficiently that I could count that as my cardio for the evening.
Do you push the pace hard enough to increase your heart rate while doing housework or gardening emoticon emoticon

Was a beautiful day in the midwest - sun shining, temp whatever it was, was comfortable enough to be in shorts if you kept moving. I have found in the past, the hard way, that for whatever reason my body doesn't keep on track if I replace yard work for my exercise. So, I have to supplement with strength training and continue with cardio.
Does anyone else have this same issue emoticon If so you know how frustrating this can be, you spend hours working outdoors and your muscles and joints are sore but your body doesn't respond with any loss or even maintain. emoticon Bummer!
So today it was yard work and tomorrow will be strength training cause I have found that does have a lasting effect on my body. How about you emoticon

Final night out today to say good bye to a good friend. Dinner out at a bar restaurant and I was the designated driver so easy to not over indulge in alcohol, which we know adds lots of calories. Anyway, noticed that the majority of us ate all of our burgers, except one of my friends at only half of hers. Did I mention she tries to eat healthy, works out regularly and maintains a healthy weight. Probably would have been good for some of the rest of us to do the same with the food. Will need an extra long walk and if the weather stays as nice, maybe some yard work tomorrow to balance all the food of the past four days.
How has your week been balancing food, exercise and life emoticon

Got in an extra work out today, wasn't as long as the usual and I tried to do a couple of different things just to shake it up a little. Felt good that I was doing something positive to balance the four days of eating out (yest through Saturday). Don't get me wrong the eating out is enjoyable just more challenging to stay in the right calorie zone.
Do you add extra time to your workouts to balance the change in your calorie intake when eating out emoticon or do you try some other technique of eating only half the food and wrapping up the rest right away emoticon or do you have some other way to manage food that works for you, if so please share it with the rest of us.

emoticon Wednesday is almost done and over the next few days we are supposed to reach peak temps of 60° will have to spend as much time as possible outside as of course par for course will return back to the 30-40's of April Spring 2016.
In the meantime, for those of us in the cooler climates we keep up our workouts in the gym, in the house and when able in the sunshine outside.

Couldn't resist today the sun made the day look so nice that despite the number on the thermometer I just had to go out for a walk. Was a little crisp but about a third of the way into my walk I warmed up and was glad to be outside breathing the fresh air. Looking forward to the day that it is warm enough that I can get an evening ride in before the sun sets.

Have you been antsy to get outside or do you live somewhere that the weather has been nice enough for outdoor activities emoticon Do you walk or bike or swim or emoticon for exercise.

Whatever exercise you are doing emoticon and may the emoticon be shining for you as well.

A beautiful sunny day that I got to admire through the window at work, didn't make it off early enough to walk in the daylight or sunset but did keep my goal of getting my strength training done today. So I feel like the week started strong with exercise and the plan for the week has slotted exercise to keep me on track.

Do you plan your week of when you will fit in exercise or do you take a chance and assume that you will somehow fit it in emoticon Same said with food, do you plan a weekly menu (with flexibility from day to day) or does each day require last minute throwing something together for your meals emoticon

If you are not a planner, pull out your calendar and make a goal for a meal a day to be organized and that should allow for the 'extra' time to be exercise time.

Time to walk or stay inside for a bike ride....why does 44°(today's weather) and overcast feel so much colder than 32° and sunny (yesterdays weather). Just trying to get my mental motivation going cause then my body will follow or vice versa, put the workout gear on and the motivation will kick in once the body starts moving.

No matter whether it's the brain or body that needs the 'kick' hope you found yours today and are able to track not only your food intake but also your exercise for the day. If not there are plenty of hours left to get moving!

Another day to stay inside, but that wasn't on the agenda. Lots of driving today and typical to what the midwest has been experiencing: snow, sleet, sun, clouds and a repeat. Always just glad to get home safely.
Was a good day and night spending time with family and at the same time looking forward to getting back to my 'routine' on Sunday. In the meantime, just wishing it was nice enough to get outside and walk again, it is Spring after all.
Hope the rest of you are experiencing a real spring and not the snowy, sleet that freezes and covers our poor Spring flowers only to expose them for a day and then repeat the next day.

Had a great day with family and enjoyed going out for lunch. Was really convenient that the restaurant had posted the calories based on the size of the meal ordered. Have to say that made my choice really easy and I ate what I normally would have gotten but was glad to know where I stood for nutrition. I really think that this should be mandated across the board and I know some states are ahead on this issue than others, consider yourself lucky if you live in one of them.

Have you been able to use the nutrition facts at restaurants to help with food choices emoticon emoticon

Workout Wednesday - Hump Day, no matter what you call it, today is nearing it's end. Did you have a to do list for the week, an exercise agenda or a commitment/goal to eating differently 'this week' emoticon
So the week is half over or half is left depending on how you look at it. If you have been tracking your exercise, food, water intake emoticon if you just figure that next week you an start it all then, well you will be 4 days ahead if you start with a new day and new mind set on Thursday, emoticon

Happy Monday,

It's one of my two days a week that I get on the scale to see what is happening and a big nothing. Am I disappointed, NO! I am actually pleased as I hadn't done any aerobic workout over the weekend and with family visiting, I am keeping in line with my nutrition tracker, but as my SP buddy says sometimes ' the food in isn't as nutritious as it could be'.

Not sure how often the rest of you weigh in, but I changed up a few weeks ago to twice a week. I had been a compulsive check every day of the work week then take weekends off as I don't get up at the same time. Anyway, the SP articles kept saying to weigh no more than 1x week. Personally, at this time I felt I need more feedback/accountability and decided two days would work, once at the beginning of the work week and once at the end.

How often do you weigh yourself emoticon emoticon emoticon
Do you use other methods of progress if the scale isn't changing as expected emoticon
emoticon emoticon

OOPs missed Saturday, must have been the crazy weather that we were experiencing. No joke it would change in under 10 minutes, snow, sleet, sunshine and dark clouds and sometimes all mixed in the same bundle throughout the whole day. Was an indoor day due to the craziness outside and spent it baking to give as gifts for friends/family that live gluten free.

Sunday was day of giving away the baked goods and was able to spend a little time out in the sunshine doing yard work. Can't say that I really got the heart rate in the cardio zone either day, but was consistent with nutrition tracker and expect that weigh in day will reflect the weekend.

And your weekend, was it full of activity or rest, family/friends or work, projects or relaxation emoticon Did you track your exercise, nutrition, goal status emoticon
emoticon

If the weekend met your expectations - congratulations! If the weekend was not everything you wanted it to be then look forward to Monday being a new day!

Yeah it's Friday and that usually means I get to sleep in on Saturday. I have read many of the articles on the benefit of wake up time being the same every day or within 90 min of your 'norm'.
I will pick the wake up/get up within 90 min every time as I never get the recommended hours during the work week.
Do you have a regular time you wake up and get up emoticon emoticon

So to go with the flow of rain there was lots of nasty hail today, which meant no yard work. Thankfully the wet stuff stopped long enough to get a walk in - could tell I hadn't gone for a couple of days so felt good to work out. Spring weather for sure, but nice to see all of the growth of bulbs and Spring flowers with the rain.

Are the flowers blooming in your area emoticon Spring is such a time of renewal, don't forget to renew your commitment to yourself for a healthier you emoticon

Have decreased the frequency of my exercise routine while company is visiting, but expect we will have some outdoor time tomorrow as the weather is finally supposed to be nice. Should have more yard raking which will keep me moving although in a different way from a bike ride, walk or elliptical which are my typical aerobic activities.

Do you count activities such as yard work or housecleaning when tracking exercise emoticon I debate these activities but will usually count part of my time spent on an outside project as I figure it is something different than I normally would be doing for an activity but it doesn't get the heart rate quite as high as my aerobic workouts do.

Out for dinner tonight and as I noted yesterday, I am on a plan to stay balanced with food and exercise while company is visiting. So, I brought half of my dinner entree home and yes I wish I had one less dinner roll, so something to remember next time. I know that had I not made conscious choices tonight, I would have eaten my whole meal as well as had a high calorie beverage. I can only imagine what the nutrition tracker would have tallied in that case!

Do you make conscious choices when going out for meals emoticon Do you look ahead at the menu to try and figure out the nutrition of your choices before you have to order a meal emoticon

Monday is typically an exercise day for me and despite having company for a few weeks, I am sticking with my routine. Sure I will change it up here or there but on the whole I don't want to look back and think why didn't I exercise or track food or.....I want instead to think in a few weeks I will be that much closer to my goals.

Hope everyone had safe travels and quality family time this weekend.

Was a good weekend despite the extra treats that accompany family get together meals, got in a walk the first day and also today (despite the rain that kept me company as I walked) and lots of gardening in the yard.

Do you use family get togethers as an excuse to over indulge in food or do you keep yourself on track emoticon Do you let family time stop exercise time or do you get the family involved in an after dinner activity emoticon Any changes you would make to this weekend or would you do a repeat emoticon For me it would be a repeat as I was pleased with all of my choices made with my goals in mind.

Have a great Monday,

Skipped the strength training to get out in the high 40 degree temps for an evening walk.. Snow melted on streets but not yet on yard so Spring plants buried under the sleet and snow. Those that flowered probably won't make it but there is still a chance for the bulbs that just started to poke through the ground. Are the signs of Spring all around you?

50PlusYoung, That was me and that darn JJ chocolate chip cookie, couldn't believe the calories after the fact. Good to hear from you.

Today was rainy, rainy, rainy and then sleet followed by snow. Was glad to be home and off the roads. The weather has been nice enough that if I haven't gotten to the gym after work, then I will usually take a walk first thing after getting home. So off track this evening and no exercise, wasn't intentional, I just forgot to put it on the 'schedule/list' of 'things to do'. Do we really forget to exercise or just not make it our priority? Then I read a SP article that identified a 'rest day' guess I had one of those today, so no guilt for not exercising, but will make sure tomorrow it's back on 'my list' of things to do.

Have safe travels if you are heading anywhere this holiday weekend,

I think cookies alone are one of my favorite foods and biggest temptation. Full of fat and sugar and so innocently small. I frequently consumed 1000 calories without thinking. Even knowing how many calories are in one, I really could not accept the reality because they were small.

I wish I could lose weight like I lose my keys, my cell phone, my temper and my mind.

Rain today, hopefully no snow tomorrow but still cooler than is comfortable for exercising outside. So back inside to exercise for this week until it warms up again. For those of you who live in warm weather climates, I would imagine it's back inside to stay cool, depending on just how warm it gets in your area.
The good news is, that there are many exercise opportunities whether we are in or outdoors. So no matter what the weather, emoticon towards your goals.

So was eating healthy today with Jimmy Johns no mayo no cheese, you get it. Anyway, skipped the chips, had an apple and thought ok on the cookie. Got home checked out the cookie calorie and it was 150 more calories than I mentally had tabulated. Amazing, how many calories they can pack in that cookie. Checked multiple web sites, as I just couldn't believe it.
So didn't blow my nutrition for the day, but also it retrospect will try to check calories first next time before I say ok.

How many times has this happened to you emoticon Underestimating the nutritional data for a food item emoticon Definitely a learning moment, in that it is embedded in my mind next time a JJ chocolate chip cookie is in the offing.

Spring flowers are probably cowering tonight wishing I would cover them as the temps drop from the 50s to snow tomorrow. Brr.

Have a great hump day,

Bundled up and outside for yard work and a walk. Couldn't resist the sunshine. Found lots of bulbs sprouting through the ground under the dead leaves in the garden and at least three different kinds of flowers already budding.
I always have a hard time predicting how much work I have done with gardening, thinking calorie burn. I don't wear a tracker, so I can only hope that the SP category is somewhat accurate for calorie burn.
Do you wear a tracker of some kind or do you have to guesstimate what calorie burn your activity may have resulted in emoticon

Was out for a walk this evening and hadn't been quite in the zone or mood but knew that I wouldn't regret exercising but I would regret not exercising.
What do you do when you aren't 'there' mentally but know it's in your best interest to get moving emoticon

Top o' the morning to all!

May the wind be always at your back,
May the road rise up to meet your feet,
May the sun shine brightly on your face
May the rain fall gently on your fields, and
May you be in Heaven for an hour before the devil knows you're dead!

Shoulda, coulda but didn't, tracked nutrition from lunch and breakfast before I had dinner. A few calories over at the end of the day and darn it, thought I would be on track.

Have you had this same experience emoticon

I did get my exercise in today, so it's not that I am not balanced for the day, but I don't usually let my workout tally affect how many calories etc that I try to maintain daily.
Guess it will be a little longer on the cardio on Wed.

What do you do if you are over on your calories, fats, etc emoticon

Early to rise this morning and not just because of the hour change. Wish I could say it was to work out but not quite that dedicated to being a morning exerciser. I envy those of you who can get out of bed and start your day with a workout, sure you feel energized all day long.
What time of the day do you exercise emoticon emoticon
Is it because of convenience due to work and life or is that when you are in your 'groove' emoticon emoticon
Either way hope you started your week out with a workout emoticon and if not Tuesday is a new day.

"Like success, failure is many things to many people. With a positive mental attitude, failure is a learning experience, a rung on the ladder, a plateau at which to get your thoiughts in order and prepare to try again."
