I was in a mentorship program last year, and we were encourage to develop a "body of work" rather than my individual little landscapes, portraits etc. focusing on a theme that unites. This keeps me out of the kitchen, and has me with a brush in my hand in my spare time rather then a cookie. I paint in acrylic, pen/ink and watercolour, and sometimes in oil, and encaustic waxes.
I went to an Artists Retreat last year and enrolled in the same on again for this year. THIS TIME IS MY TIME. It is a 5 day workshop, and it is wonderful. You are with like minded people. We had a great instructor who was very encouraging. We have this same instructor this year and I'm looking forward to seeing what I can learn this year.
Like you painting is for "me", and if others like it bonus. Unlike some, my goal in life is not to sell what I paint, it is to paint. If someone is interested in purchasing one, great. If not, that is fine too. Just enjoy... I've moved to more contemporary art, and have been really surprised at the encouragement I've been getting to continue my work in this area. I sometimes have to tell people... "If you just don't get it, try and see what the story is that is being told." Surprisingly enough, that is usually all that needs to be said, and people start telling me the story they see. Interesting to say the least, and surprisingly accurate.
It adds to my stress, but I've also organized and have run an Artists Retreat for the past 2 years. Everyone enjoys the 4 days and after the first year, it's not too bad. The 3rd annual will be this fall.
I visited your website, and you do beautiful work. Sometimes I have to force myself to pick up the brushes, but once I open the paint tubs, I'm lost in that world.
Last spring I took a couple of courses at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. One was Portrait Drawing and the other the Human Form. I enjoyed both as this was a new area I needed some skill development in.
This ends my first week on Spark People. Tomorrow I weight myself for the first time. I had to go to the Winnipeg on the weekend and tried my best to be good. I had 1 glass of wine in the hot tub at my sister-in-laws (a treat). With the temperature at -20C, and in a hot tub, this is a wonderful experience, you are not cold, and enjoying a lovely winter evening - a unique experience, and I love it. That is such a stress relief for me, I'm thinking I should buy one for myself.
I hope you'll pick up your pencils and brushes soon. It does help. I know only too well. Wishing you good health.
