I would like to propose that as a group we challenge ourselves to participate in Earth Hour on 28 March. It is an initiative set up by the World Wildlife Fund in response to global climate change. We simply turn off our lights for an hour starting at 8:30 pm.

Even if you don't believe in climate change, I think we can agree that we do a lot of resource extraction for our electricity. This is primarily coal for most of us. Or at least we can probably agree about serious light pollution issues.

Here is a video to promote earth hour...

www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjWD8pbK5t8

And here is the website...

www.earthhour.org/

I am lucky enough to live in a city promoting Earth Hour, but even if you aren't it is something easy you can do.

Yeah, I feel inspired to take some cloth bags to my daughter's to recycle her stuff that her town doesn't. I usually forget but being here right now got me thinking about it.

that's cool! i've found that to be really good advice to give to my friends too! most of us have our shortcomings somewhere... we use regular lightbulbs, we let the water run while we do the dishes (yikes!), public transit not an option, can't find or afford all the green products we want... anyhow, i think even doing a few things helps. most people don't want to change their entire lifestyle but they're willing to try a few small things.

i'll have to check out "shape". i'm not familiar with it!

Shape magazine's April edition has "The no stress guide to going green." It's kind of a if you can't go all the way, we suggest you try going this far. I guess it's got some good ideas for the unconvinced. There is some useful info about where to take used CFLs and other stuff.

Hey all. It has been a fun March so far. I went to an electronic recycling event over the weekend. In the Denver area a few businesses and organizations got together to fund the event. It was free. There were five huge centers opened to public. I picked up a bunch of old electronics from a non-prof I volunteer with to take the stuff. I got there shortly after it opened and had a two-hour wait to get to the recycling area. It was nuts. It was like a sad scene out of WALL-E with the field of old TVs, computers, fax machines, etc.

Having a hard time finding time and energy to get to SparkPeople lately! That's a bummer.

I've been looking for a new line of natural/organic haircare products that aren't freakishly expensive and that actually work on my hair. I might have found it! www.e-sen-cia.com/about.htm You can get it at Walgreen's and with their rebate, it's actually FREE!

Well, we had more snow today. Sigh. Last night I found a neat plan to make a solar food dehydrator. I don't know how much use I will get with it around here, but my mom lives in sun country and I thought I might try it there. It will be interesting.

Good for you!

Weather in the 60s today. Good for an air out. All this sun is making my herbs and houseplants perk up. Can't wait for gardening time.

thought it was going to get ugly with a salesclerk last night who was trying to insist that the one pair of pants we bought needed to go in a plastic store bag.

that'll teach me to leave my canvas bags at home.

(by the way, I did end up walking out with just the pants and receipt)

at least insulated with something! :-) seaweed is an interesting one. i have heard that houses here also used to be insulated with newspaper sometimes. we found one section of newspaper from July 22, 1906. that was pretty cool! also a mouse skeleton from about 1907 - LOL

It's hard to not feel guilty about throwing away all that plaster, but you are helping to improve your home from an energy perspective. Old homes will need updates and repairs. Hopefully the new materials will last many many years.

I've never heard of horsehair plaster. Here in Nova Scotia a lot of the old houses are insulated with seaweed & newspapers.

Happy March! :-)
I had a tough February from an Eco standpoint so I"m glad it's a new month... we are remodeling a room in our 109 year old house and had to throw out bags and bags of horsehair plaster. Probably more trash than I've thrown out in the last few years! So depressing :-( But we were able to put in insulation where there was none before so hopefully that saves some oil heating at least!

Hi!

Welcome to March!

I find this winter, I've been more & mroe interested in green technology, green living, self sustainability etc. It's nice to learn new things.
I'm trying to be more mindful of my garbabe and re-purpose when I can. Not buy unless it's a need etc.

As I look out my window at the freezing rain and dreariness of the day, I'm really looking forward to spring and helping my husband with our garden.

Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.

Good morning! I just found out I have an ally in the building who also goes through the trash to pull out the recycleables. It's the guy who drags those heavy cans out. It's a dirty job, but somebody has to be responsible. There were more beer bottles than "trash."
