That's a great idea. :)

In my case, this is my non-immediate family. I've tried to arrange a name-draw exchange a few times to no avail. Some of my aunts just love to shop.

That is one of the things I do not like about Christmas. you HAVE to buy something to everybody. Not really. I give presents to friends all year around. if I see something I think they would like and I can afford it, I just get it. I give presents for no reason.

Agreed!! It makes a big difference, I think. Some of my family members give (hate to say it) dollar store junk just for the sake of giving a present. I don't think there's any chance of enlightening them. :(

Cheers!

Sonja,
I also have been oving towards presents that are "to do" instead of "to have". I think you can accumulate just so many things...

Just wanted to chime in. My husband and I have been using the same gift bags for about 5 or 6 years now! And I scavenge tissue paper whenever I can. For example, I scooped all the tissue paper at my friend's baby shower a few months ago and added it to my supply.

For presents, one of my standard presents this year was gift certificates for a movie rental store. Barely any packaging - and the gift of an experience, not a material possession to end up in the landfill.

Cheers!

Wrapped gifts in Christmas kitchen towels and handing them out in reusable cloth bags (like grocery sacks) for the gift bag.

Instead of *gifts* for friends and coworkers I made baggies of hot coco with marshmallows and shaved chocolate and handed out with each I wrote a personalized "Christmas Letter".

And instead of numerous cars to the families house we are carpooling to save gas and C02 output.

My mom is using Christmas kitchen towels to wrap gifts, and then we get to take the towels home too!

And, we are using real dishes instead of paper and plastic...a big undertaking for our large gathering!

Congratulations on your gift and on your "job". WE do have a influence in our co-workers, don't we? Initially I was seen as a weirdo, but now I see co-workers with some attitudes towards conserving resources. It is nice...

The gift bags have sort of become part of the holiday decorations... I'm just as pleased to see them again as I am to see the same xmas ornaments come out again. :-)

Just got a cool cactus as a present from a co-worker today. Hadn't thought of that one for a holiday gift, but it's a great idea and eco-friendly. I'm proud of the environmentalist I have created in her! ;-) LOL

Funny you commented that. My partner and I have been using the same gift bag (and the tissues, for 2 years now. I give him on his b-day, he gives me back on my and so on... Now his sister (with her husband and daughter) got in the "game" also. last year it was a festival of "have already seen you", bags. We do not mind at all.

As a family, we use only gift bags instead of wrapping paper and then we reuse them (and any tissue paper) year after year. If they get a bit beat up after several years, we keep those among the immediate family as we don't mind. :-)

This year we didn't buy a tree...I decorated a fake ficus that I have had for ages and put up a few other decorations as well.

As far as gifts I made oatmeal and pancake mixes etc and wrapped everything in envirosax. If I had to buy anything (I tried not to), I am giving local items.

I did a lot of my shopping at yard sales and thrift stores. I warned the family first but with small kids, I really couldn't do donations or things like that for them.

Decorate a live tree, and then plant it ouside in the spring (if you don't have room in your yard, call the city and ask if you could plant it in a park for them).

I'm giving "green" gifts this year - donations in folks' names to Heifer Project International. Saves on shopping, wrapping, mailing AND gives someone in the world a chance at a better life through education and then gives them the chance to pass it on to others.

I was wondering if our members had any tips about how to make the holiday season greener... Any suggestions of things we can do to have a better use of resources?
