I feel left out now. We have over 2 acres...and minimal time in which to mow. I would LOVE to have a reel mower, but it just doesn't work for us. Maybe if I can convince the husband to buy a house on a smaller piece of land!
If you aren''t a loser, you can be!
I love my reelie, too! I only use it in the late summer, though. In the spring (when the grass grows high & fast) I have a rechargeable electric mower that I also love. I had the same issues you did, CYCLEWOMAN in the spring, when I couldn't get out to mow as often as I should have & the grass got tall, so I got the electric for those times (and it also mulches so I don't have to rake grass bits off the lawn).
Glad you found such a treasure!

I my reel mower!! My only complaints with it is that they don't "edge" well and you CANNOT let the fescue get to 5"!! at that height and beyond, it knocks down more grass than it cuts. We have a gas mower that we use once a month for edging and thatch prevention.
I was going to church Sunday when a curvy beauty caught my wandering eye. Attracted by her sinuous limbs and rounded body, I quickly manouvered into position. Yes, folks, my eyes had not been deceived! It was an original 1950's or 60's model Scott push reel mower in good, minimally rusted condition-for sale to boot. Holding in my lust, I asked the lady for a price.
Well, I drove the push mower home with empty pockets and high hopes. I was not disappointed! In thirty minutes flat I mowed 3/4 acres of lawn and weeds.
Here is the low down on the reel mower
better cut for the grass-much more beautiful.
lasts longer-evidently 40 years.
safe, My son can help next year. By 8 yo he can mow the entire yard himself.
no pollution involved.
Slightly more workout (this can be a plus if you want to use this as exercise)
must be oiled/maintained.
must mow every week.
All in all, I recommend this type of mower for lawns under 1 acre, and for people in good health, with no heart conditions or back problems.
Well worth the thirty bucks!
