I bought it at the pet store. It worked really well when by DD burned a huge pot of beans. Talk about a nasty smell LOL

Good luck! Now the unpacking starts, been there...not the greatest job emoticon Putting out essential oils(I personally love lavender)on some cotton pads all over the house will give it a welcoming whiff.

Here's what I did today.....I turned on the ceiling fans. I also sprayed the place down with some 'Oust' that I happened to have already taken over there. Will see what it's like tomorrow....I can't get to the store until later this week to pick up the baking soda.

And you can get it at the pet store? Interesting....

Thanks for your help. I've also had suggestions similar to yours -- baking soda, and leaving the windows open. I'll be moving stuff this weekend, so I'll do the window thing then. But I'll have to run to the store either tomorrow or Wednesday for the baking soda.

You can also sometimes find dehumidifying packets (about the size of a small box of kleenex) in the camping section of stores. I know my parents used to keep a couple in their gun safe to make sure things didn't rust, and they worked well.

I don't know how well it would work on a whole house, but sometimes placing shallow bowls of vinegar in a room with a sponge in the middle (to help it evaporate) can help get rid of odors.

I don't know the name of it but if you go to Petsmart (maybe Home Depot has it) and ask they can direct you to it. There is a powder, its made from volcanic ash, natural, and it will remove any smells you have. You put it in little dishes around the house and change it every day or so and it will remove the smells. We had a stray cat come in through or dog door and spray all over our house when we were gone for the weekend. What a stench! It worked in a day or two to get the smell out!.
Good luck.

Get the vinegar out.....had the same problem when we moved into an old house about 6 months ago, I cleaned the whole house with vinegar & water, even did the carpets! Still had a bit of a musty smell in the bottom bedroom and I just left out cut onions(my reasoning was if it can get rid of paint odors it has to work)for about a week and that took care of it. Good luck and enjoy your new home!

A dehumidifier can work wonders if you think it's because of lingering dampness, just be sure to clean it frequently.

I'm not sure -- we (my co-worker who will be my landlord & I) stopped there yesterday to see if they HAD cleaned the carpets....and they did. But when I opened the door, that musty smell hit me like a wall. (I have allergies to that stuff, so it is probably stronger to me than to others).

I have a box of baking soda in my fridge, too....not sure if it would work in all the rooms of the house. I'll just have to try it!

I know they washed the walls, too.

I'm sure the carpets being cleaned will make a big difference. I know that vinegar is added to the laundry to help with mildew so maybe some cleaning with vinegar could help lingering scents. I was also wondering if Baking soda might help. I have an open box in the refrigerator to help with smells. I HAVE NO IDEA if it would help around the house to soak up odors or not but it was a though.

Okay -- the carpets are almost finished (being cleaned, that is!) and they are currently painting the outside. I got the gas & electric taken care of...just gotta contact the water company. Then I'll just have to switch over my Internet & TV services.

Because it's an old home, there is a musty, mildew smell in the air when you first walk in. Any suggestions on how to get rid of it??????????????
