Hi- I am new here, and applaud all of us for reaching out to one another and deciding to grab onto a better and more healthy life.

I am replying to the posting about the book written by Rochelle Rice: Real Fitness for real Women. Almost ten years ago, I started taking Yoga classes at her studio in NYC. It was amazing, and I found Rochelle to be the kindest, most caring person. She and the other women in the class (all very overweight but amazingly fit), made me feel immediately comfortable. With a permanent disability (terrible car accident), that does not allow me to flex one of my ankles, walk barefoot or get around without a forearm crutch, she gave me personal instruction on how to keep moving.

Sadly, my finances caused me to stop attending the classes. Sixty pounds have now added up and starting this month, May 2013, I'm on a new mission to once again reclaim myself.

Thank you for reminding me about Rochelle Rice and her book. I just looked at her website and want to share it with all of you, too. http://rochellerice.com/about-rochelle-rice/

Best wishes to all!

I have RA and am working on loosing at least 50 if not 100 pounds to help reduce the stress on my body joints.
I found a great book for large women with mobility issues for workout ideas. Real Fitness for Real women. It has ideas for those who are chair bound. It has helped me loose so far 12lbs (no it was not water, trust me, I am so glad it came off my waist first. Makes sitting a little easier on me. Anyway I recommend the book highly.

I am so happy to find this conservation going on. Happy to chat with others who have the same challenges as I have.
I am in a power chair most of the time and over weight is not easy to say but I weigh 327 pounds and my legs do not hold me well anymore. I'm 64 years old and still work in my yard even with the chair. I rake and move along a little more slowly but I get things done at my pace.

I know there must be some of you that could help me find exercises I can do in the chair, would you please help me?

I will continue to strive for the best everyday I breathe.

I too fit right in. I'm 51 - more than 100 lbs to lose - 5 surgeries and a broken wrist in a little more than 2 years. 2 of those surgeries on my left foot and the last 2 (1 foot / 1 carpal tunnel) in the last 6 months. Now I'm starting to move a little again and every joint in my body aches, I'm tired and have constant headaches. I went to my dr last week - test ran for auto-immune disease and thankfully negative. I have to do the vit d, iron, blood sugars test this week. My dr said the pain could be caused by one of those or a reaction to a medicine I'm on. So, waiting to see what happens there.

I am considering getting a weighted hula hoop for exercise. I used to hula hoop years ago as a kid and I think it could be fun. My only fear is if the hoop is big enough to go around my waist. Anyone with any experience here?

I am just now getting back into tracking. I'm using a fitbit to track my steps. And tracking my food / other exercise on here... Today was my first day tracking. I did ok - I stayed in my calorie range and in my carb / protein goals.

Any encouragement, exercise ideas, recipes would be overwhelmingly welcomed.

I'm in the same boat, Lupus and Myastenia Gravis, too much movement and my tendons and joints get inflammed and can't move at all and with the MG my muscles give out after about six hours of being up and all I can do is piddle.

But I am losing weight and working on the increased activity, which should get better with more loss of poundage!

Glad you guys are here to listen!

I am so glad you are able to bike with your grandkids. Since learning about my Type 2 Diabetes this year, I have decided I have to make some changes to be around when I finally get some grandkids. I have two bad knees and bad back as well, so exercise is challenging. The peripheral neuropathy in my feet doesn't help either. But I have taken up trying to go bowling at least once a month and am looking at trying some seated exercises until I lose enough weight do more. Hand in there and we can do this with the support on this website. I am new to this so I can't wait to meet new people who can relate to what I am going through with weight and diabetes issues.

It is discouraging to not be able to move vigorously, but i just keep at it and it gets easier and easier little by little. The pool helps. My legs won't bend enough for the bike....which I love.
I still keep counting my calories!!

Nice to know I'm not the only over 50 over weight person with bad knees and a bad back. Past time to do something about the weight. I learned this week that I can't do much about the age. Even though 60 will be here in a few short months I still felt in my mind like I was much much younger. I have bad knees and a bad back and my body doesn't do the things I want but I still thought I could do these things if I really wanted to. So the grandkids were getting out their bikes and getting them ready for spring and I thought how much fun is that! I used to love riding bikes. Well, my six year old grandson had his training wheels off and was just learning to ride when I jumped on a bike and almost fell flat on my face. He was doing better than I was, I simply have no balance. The next day I was walking through the store and there was an adult tricycle. I rode it in the store and loved it, bought it and brought it home and the kids and I are having so much fun. It is easier on the knees than I thought it would be and so far it isn't making my back ache. We haven't gone for any long rides though, but here we are me and the grandkids all riding our bikes together. At least I am getting some exercise and making some memories.

I am sorry to hear about your problems, but am glad to hear you are trying to do the chair exercises. At no time is any exercise easy let alone chair. But if you can do a few mins. a day is better then no mins. Hang in there and do the best you can do. emoticon emoticon

I understand about the prednisone ... I've been on a lower dose for 11 years now due to a polymyalgia that won't go away (it usually goes away in 2-5 years). I now have lymphedema and on top of being morbdily obese, having collapsed ankles...I now have to tightly bandage my legs daily. I am not exercising and I know I need to be but chair exercises are all I can do and everytime I try, I can do no more than a few minutes...it's very discouraging....I'm just learning to bandage my legs and I'm going to give it a few days then start exercising again on Wednesday. I know i have to stick with it and it will get better.

I've had 6 leg operations in the last 3 years. I was getting in shape and really dropping the pounds until I had to take large doses of predisone (spelling, sorry) for about 2 months. Now I can move and my weight is continually skyrocketing. The absolute only method for me to remedy this is to count every calorie to ensure I am not over eating in any aspect of my diet.

hard, hard, hard.....but, I am learning to make lower calorie meals to accommodate my appetite and stay within my limits

I have been experiencing tendonitis in my right foot for several months. It has really killed my daily walks. I spend my days off of work trying not to have to walk much as when I do work I'm on my feet A LOT (I'm an RN) I was fortunate enough to find a recombant bike at a yard sale (best $10 I ever spent!) and use it daily (well almost daily). It doesn't hurt my foot, gets my HR up and has a built in timer along with other stuff I haven't figured out how to use yet. I highly reccomend one if you can find one.

13wk/13lb challenge: 1/1/13-4/2/13

I continually strive to be the person my dogs think I am.

Went to dr yesterday and got released from PT. Got approval to do the water aerobics at the rehab pool. They have classes 3x a week and they are more my speed at least at my current speed. The pool is nice and very warm. The pool at the spa was cold and the aerobics program was not for anyone with any challenges. I tweeked my ankle xmas eve, so need a cortisone shot before I can even start. It is discouraging, but all in good time. Baby steps and I will persevere.

Oh Barb,
I was so encouraged to read your post!! I too have many of the problems that you do. I can barely walk some days, but I am getting ready to rejoin the YMCA here in my town. I want to ride horses again so badly. I am hoping that I will be able to by next summer.
Keep doing what you are doing, I am interested in your progress. Your success is encouragement to me.
Thank you for sharing.

I've been lucky enough to free up $50 a month for membership at a gym with a pool. I can hardly get up the stairs to the gym part, but the pool...aaaahhh. It's a warm water pool, perfect for back and joint problems. I have to fit it in around work, etc. but swim about 4 times a week.

And by swim, I mean I move horizontally through the water. Bad knee and hip won't let me water-walk, bad back leaves aerobics out, bad shoulder won't allow the crawl, so I do a modified breast stroke, but with a kick that won't hurt my hip. I must look kinda like a water bug, but it makes me feel good!

I never heard of "Silver Sneakers", I think that may help me as well. I have been doing so much exercise on my pedal exerciser that my knee is swollen and aches awful. I started at 5 minutes a day then slowly increased. I was at 60 minutes but had to drop way down. I had bilateral knee replacements and a second surgery on the right knee ( the one that is so swollen now) to remove the meniscus. I have been trying to lift 5 lb weights with total exhaustion. I'm so terribly out of shape that I'm having a hard time getting myself moving without pain. Is Silver Sneakers associated with any gym or just certain ones?

I have bad knees and back. I can't do alot of the usual exercises. Walking is very minimal with me. If you have Medicare, You may be eligilble for Siver Sneakers. It is a program where you can go to a gym and it is covered by Medicare.
I do water aerobics. It helps me quite a bit. At first it didn't seem to help my body very much, but it did help my mind. Now I am making progress. I love it.

I moved this up from the bottom of the thread so everone can find it. Spark has a series of exercises for those with limited mobility.

Hi everyone!

Our staff has collected all of our limited mobility and seated exercise workouts into one comprehensive lifestyle center that is now live on the site. You’ll find the Limited Mobility Lifestyle Center listed with all lifestyle centers (note that it’s not yet in the dropdown navigation, but will be added there soon).

Hopefully you'll find this info helpful when directing members to resources on the site.

Thanks!

On my local PBS station, each morning there is an exercise/stretching program called "Sit and Be Fit" with Mary Ann Wilson. It's mostly seated work, but there is a 5 minute section where you are on your feet, but balancing your weight by holding onto the back of a chair. This program works for me right now and, since it's on at 5:30AM in my area, I tape it and do it later. If you don't feel you can stand that long, the exercises are also geared to sitting. If you don't have this show, go to the Sit and Be Fit website. There are DVDs you can purchase, and I think Youtube has a couple of videos for free. Good luck!

I Anyone,
I just joined this website for the first time ever and I believe I'm in the right place? I'm over 50, 100+ to loose and limited mobility.
I also have NO HEALTH INSURANCE! So I could be playing a dangerous game with diet and exercise. But my prognosis without doing either is a no-brainer, so I have to take a shot.
My physical problem is with my legs. When I was a stupid teen, I was in a huge car wreck, the car smashing my lower legs. The doctors said I was lucky I didn't loose both. I hobbled along for 30 years or so, gaining(and loosing) but mostly gaining. I'm at the point now where standing more than 5 minutes causes so much pain that I get about to the puking-guts-out stage.
So if anyone has some great mostly upper-body exercise recommendations, I'd love to hear about it.
Also I'm looking for people to whine and complain and giggle about life with emoticon

Hi Everyone,
I am a returning to SP after a few years .. I am 100 lbs over weight or more .. I did introduce myself on one of the other threads on this team ..
I have decided to try this again .. This time I am taking small small steps, and making small small changes .. Today I went food shopping and bought some low calorie and fat free things.. I looked up a couple of recipes on here and saved them in my recipe box .. I am ready to do some exercises as soon as I'm done in here.. Just going to get my exercise ball out and stretch a bit ..
I'm just glad to be here and finally making some changes .. I can't keep getting fatter and fatter....

I think I'm going to like this area of the site. I have severe osteo arthritis in both knees that has resulted in ligament damage, and am fighting to lose this weight so that I don't have to have knee replacement surgery any time soon. The ortho told me flat out it's not a matter of "if" but "when" and the longer I can delay surgery and the more weight I can lose prior to, the better off I'll be. Until I lose the weight and/or have the surgery, I walk with both knees in braces. My physical therapist had me walking forward and then backwards from one side of our pool to the other during the summer; guess I'll have to join the YMCA for wintertime. Am also walking on the treadmill, doing forwards and backwards on the elliptical trainer, and riding a recumbent bike, as per the PT. Some days I ache so badly I just want to quit, but I also know that as my muscles are strengthened and get more used to moving, my joints won't ache quite so badly.

No one can stop you from reaching your goals but yourself.

Good look neverbetter12. I wish I had a pool. Maybe I would learn to swim. I do hear the resistance is very good for your bones and muscles. Good luck on your journey. Donna

Thanks for posting this. I just joined today with a commitment to use my pool (sadly left untouched most of the summer) daily for 30 days to get some exercise while my heel "heals". I'm tired of feeling pain constantly (hip and heel) the I know is directly related to my long-term obesity. But I know that I can't move forward (literally) without exercise. Once I get the swimming daily under my belt, I'm goint to try the yoga (have always wanted to) as well. Hopefully will be walking regularly in a couple of months.

Hi I'm new here. My name is Donna. I am 52. I weigh 300 lbs. Since starting SP I have lost 32 lbs. I have 1 knee replaced already and my goals is to not have to have the other one replaced. I work out most days between 30 - 60 min. There are alot of exercises I cannot do because of the knee replacement. I'm here for support and motivation.

This is the link to the chair exercise team. I have to say that chair marching has changed my life! I have lost 48 pounds in the last year and am at my lowest weight in 20 years.I have arthritis in my knees and hips and chair marching and stretches have helped me to be able to use my recumbent bike-before it was just too painful. I can do 5 minutes at a time now-slow but steady progress.

Don't know if it will help you but I take 500 mg of Tumeric a day for inflamation. It really helps with the pain I have in my legs and back. It is a spice so no drugs involved. It may help you to have a better time using that bike.

I just joined and also need to loose 100 pounds to avoid a knee replacement.

Welcome everyone new. I am in the same position. I started out in the pool. It really helped me. I know not everyone has access, but if there is a way--try it.

I also bought myself a yoga belt at Target. Real cheap--under $10.00.
I did gentle stretches everyday. Started out slow--stretching in bed a couple of times a day.

I hope this helps.emoticon

I'm just coming to this team page the first time, since I chose too many groups to begin with. I think this one really fits where I am. I got a Terra Trike Rover this week and rode for 1 mile on my second time out. It's recumbant and doesn't hurt my arthritic knees the way the 2 wheeler non-recumbants do. I even went up an incline in first gear. WOW! Hope you are having the energy to complete some of your goals. emoticon

Boy I can relate to being angry that I let myself go. Also returned from 2 weeks with family and got right back into my bad habits. It's been a struggle this week, but finally putting my eating first. Today I went to a Pilates Class. It has really helped with my strength. The first few weeks were tough, but now I can do things I never thought I would do again. Pilates does not burn many calories though, so I also added in 20-30 minutes of aerobic activity 5 days a week. The more active I am, the easier it is and better I feel.

So happy to have the team !!!!!!!!!!emoticon

After having both knees and one hip replaced I am just starting to be somewhat mobile again. It doesn't take much to wear me out and I am finally getting over being embarrassed at how I have let myself go and started getting mad. This site makes me feel a lot less isolated. I am glad I found you all. Gussie

Thanks for this post.
A couple of years ago doctors were going to put me in a scooter, and now I walk all around, bend over and can slowly do stairs (though not my favorite thing)
I started out walking around a pool. Then I took a water rehab class. Then I did very light weights. Now I do that and use a Nu-Step. I just had to go very slow. I am about 150 over weight, so it wasn't easy. I found a wonderful gym that specializes in helping folks with disabilities. Start out in the water if you can. It is so much easier and fun than you would ever think. If you absolutely will not do water try to find someplace where you can use/try a Nu-Step. They had me try it two weeks after I had my knee replaced and couldn't go in the water. Good luckemoticon

Hi ya'll! I am 62 y.o. with rheumatoid arthritis( worst in knees and hands) so limited mobility is me. Over the past 15 yrs, I have had a divorce, and been diagnosed with RA and fibromyalgia and managed to gain more weight than I ever thought I would. I see some of you are just starting and some have been fighting the good fight for awhile. I am encouraged to see that it isn't just me....needless to say I am feeling really anxious about my success right now so will be checking in regularly so ya'll can poke me and keep me going forward. Thanks in advance for those pokes :).

I was floored when my insurance said no. Oh, well if I can do it without surgery maybe i can keep it off. My brother had the surgery and gained all his weight back. They did offer counseling for weight management but haven't taken advantage of yet.

They really said no Sherry? Most insurances do cover it. My ins. covers bypass surgery, Jenny Craig, Curves, but they won't cover a nutritionalist or dietician. I told them it didn't make any sense to me, what they do cover are risky quick fixes for the masses but when you want to go to someone that will tailor a safe and healthy lifestyle change for the individual, they don't cover that. There are other weight loss options that ins companies do cover, did you ask about those?

It is a personal decision to have the surgery, and no one can make that decision but that person. My sister had it but I would not want it. Those pounds did creep up on me over time and it will take time to shave them off.

I have found the worst person to ask about weight loss advise is the family doctor. They have very limited knowledge in that area and will either want to prescribe the latest "wonder drug" or hand you the pyrimad chart. That can't tell you the best way to lose for your chemical makeup. I asked the endocronologist how he had lost weight because what works for one doesn't work for others as we all know.

There are two paths you can go by, but in the longrun....There's still time to change the road you're on

I was wondering, iI'm limited and my only form of exercise is walking around at work from my desk to the fax or mailroom or bathroom or lunch room. How do I track this exercise on my tracker. Not sure how many MPH I'm going I'm sure crawl isn't a option and I want to get credit for what I do. I'm going to check out the site below. If I can do things at my desk would be a great way of getting some sort of exercise.

There are a lot of exercises you can do in a chair. Getting up and walking around or standing at your desk can help too. You can keep your feet busy at a desk and that can help with your circulation etc.

I am really grateful that I stumbled upon this entry for the limited mobility center.
While I am abulatory, I work at an office job all day where my butt is in a chair 95 percent of the time. it's hard for me to even leave long enough for a lunch break; I usually eat at my desk while working.
I tried the 12 minute Seated Core Workout this morning as a way to get some ideas for chair exercises, and I am so glad that I did !!! I think I could even sneak a peek at this video at work and manage to work in this in now and again. I will be certain to check out the other ideas as well. Thank you so much for putting this together!

Live each day in the moment...be awake and attentive to the gift of life.

I saw this posted on another group and thought to share it with you. I know there are several here that can take advantage of this.

Thanks!
