Could not find my DVD for arthritis exercises, so purchased New one from Amazon. Also got one for pain and one for balance. DVD needed because only exercise area is bedroom. I finally spent the gift card my grandson gave me over a year ago and only had to pay 13$. Will augment the DVD' s with spark exercises. Can only play on my Kindle.

I have limited mobility d/t a total right knee replacement on May 23, 2014. I have found the following zumba chair exercise to not only be fun but easy as well. I keep my legs marching the entire time but you don't have to. Hope it helps someone out.

Hi Linda! I have gotten a good start but it is taking longer than I had anticipated. I do chair exercises from physical therapy but I want to start chair dancing. I think that would be more fun. And I do need more fun. I have been seeing all the things I cannot do and now really need to be more positive about where I am going. Hope everyone has a great day!!

Today is my 30th day and I am celebrating consistency and not being addicted to my scale. Six weeks ago I could not walk from my car to my office without being short of breath and having my legs and back hurt. This morning I started using my "Walk Away the Pounds" tape. I was able to get through the entire tape with many breaks but kept my body moving. emoticon

I am just starting this process! Its good to get something started. Been really hard after injury and learning both knees are bone on bone- daily walking is hard much less doing the running around in a critical care unit I was doing! Tried chair exercises today- tracking food ect.. having bariatric surgery in August.

Thanks for the link to the limited mobility exercises! These will be very helpful. I have issues with sitting as well as moving, but I can probably handle the short chair exercises. One of these days I will invest in a donut to help with this if it doesn't improve on its own. Reading through these posts, I realize there are many of us in the same boat, and I am very glad Spark People has this center to help us with exercising!

Hope you are doing well, Texas. I grew up in Texas, long ago transplanted in the Pacific Northwest.

Someone recommended this video. I can't tell you the last time I've been able to do more than 5 minutes of exercise. I made it through this entire workout. lol Probably spurred on by the fact that people 10-20 years my senior were doing it.

Hi! I'm Kathi. I have been on SP for a couple of months. Still learning my way around but loving this site more each day! I joined this team a few weeks ago but just found this forum and wanted to share my story in hopes that it will encourage someone. I'm 53 yrs old but in September will add another year to that. emoticon I was born with a bone defect called "Club Feet & Hands". My feet were turned in like a golf club. Doctors had to build me ankles. I have very little flexibility in them. All my joints do not sit correctly together like a normal person. I had to have both knees replaced. Yes, kinda at an early age. Due to this I suffer from "Degenerative Arthritis". This gets worse seems by the month. I also have "Chronic Pain". I have " Degenerative Disc Disease" and recently had my C-3 through C-7 disc fused. Even though we all have our own "special" mobility problems, I feel we are each on a path to wellness. I thank God daily I found SP because it has given me the motivation I needed at this point in my life. I also am thankful that I get to read others thoughts and encouragements daily. emoticon

God gives me every day and I am thankful. I hop to my goals daily.

Texastitcher, Just want to thank you for sharing the limited mobility lifestyle center link. It was so helpful and very thoughtful of you. After reading it, I am happy to say that it has motivated me so much. This is my first day with SP and not sure how to navigate the system yet, but it is so nice to know that so many people are fighting the same battle and sharing such helpful information. I got so tired of going to costly meetings where I felt the instructors have lost and kept off not more than 20 lbs. and knew nothing about the struggles of someone that had a lot of weight to lose. I look forward to using this site to help me reach my goal. Thanks for your help

Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

With God, All things are possible!

I joined SP yesterday. I was glad to find so many different teams. I have some limited mobility. I have an autoimmune disorder where my immune system fights the formation of my own skin cells, so for the last 20 years I have been fighting a huge open wound, like an ulcer, on my calf. Infections have also been a huge issue to the point antibiotics were not working. Just over a year ago I ended up in the hospital with an infection that was almost to the bone. I was told then if something was not done about it I would have to have an amputation. Let me tell you, at 53 years old that scared me. I then went in search of a doctor that could provide me with the care that was necessary, no one knew how to treat this condition. I was blessed to locate someone in Bullhead City Az. So, after taking 5 months off work and commuting back and forth from Northern Nevada to Bullhead to get the necessary medical care my husband and I moved to Bullhead.

In just over a year the wound is now half the size and still healing, slowly. However, during this time the doctor had me on limited movement, feet elevated. My legs have become weak and my balance poor. He has given me the go to start moving around again. I really need to get my strength built back up as I have fallen several times and can not get myself up. The last time it took me almost 2 hours to maneuver myself up. It is difficult and painful to the wound.

I am staring to walk in 10 minute blocks. If anyone has other ideas they would be greatly appreciated.

Vici

TEXASTITCHER - Thanks for reposting the access to the limited mobility. I just rejoined Sparkpeople because I remembered that they have online exercises to use. I have a knee injury that stemmed from a lack of nutrition due to food intolerances. I am currently seeing a physical therapist who is trying to help me get back to walking better. I was using the treadmill and bike to increase my exercise when I suddenly my knee problems have flared up again. It is a lot like tendonitis only involves three areas on and around the knee. To get my exercise in, I now must use chair exercises and other types of exercise.

Just starting again. My mobility has decreased lately. I just never got my breath back after my last bout of pneumonia a couple of months ago. Am using the seated videos here and on You Tube. I also use the exercises here to lead an exercise program at the senior center when I am able to get there once a week.

Hi, I'm just starting out on SparkPeople. I joined last month and have been learning to manuver my way around on here. I've been tracking for about 1 1/2 weeks of food. I can't run either. I do work in a school and need to walk back and forth between classes but at home I found some sitting video exercises. Did you see them? Can you walk around?

Justme9898, you have inspired me so much! I have always thought that if I did the elliptical it needed to be for a set amount of time. You have helped me to realize that each little bit counts, and I can grow with baby steps. Thank you so much!

Awesome! We live in WA it rains alot this time of year and are raising 3 grandchildren so I cannot afford a gym membership. My goal is to walk 3 x a week, but brittle bone issues I can't take a fall. This week I walked 1.5 miles and did some silly exercise videos with grands, yes I look silly, no I can't do most of the moves, but I am moving, we are having fun and take it at a snails pace you will be shocked how well you do! Keep up the great work! I understand limited mobility!

I was told that the doctors did not want to do knee surgery on younger people because the knee replacement only last about 10 years. But I have been told that the new materials they are using now last 15 years.
I was told they would not do knee surgery until I was under 200 pounds.
I am finally slowly losing weight, so it looks like it may be possible.
I have been going to water aerobics for a year now and it has helped to the point that I can now walk on the elliptical. It used to be that I could not lift my leg high enough to even stand on it. I started at 10 seconds a day on the elliptical (yes you read that right seconds) I increased the time by 10 seconds every two weeks. My goal is 5 minutes three times a day. I did not think I would ever get there - BUT this week I am on for 4 and a half minutes at a time. Slow steady persistence does pay off.

goal is to be able to walk again

Actually, that is basically what he said. At the time I was 52. I may go back to him once I get some weight off and see if we can come up with a plan to help until I am old enough.

You might want to ask your doctor why he said you were too young. However, I expect it had more to do with how long the implants can last. Many have an in-service life of not more than 20 years, which means that, if you were to get the surgery now, you would likely need surgery again at some point, and replacing an artificial knee is difficult surgery.

Welcome. I have some mobility issues as well due to back surgeries, fibromyalgia, plate in my ankle, etc.. I can make excuses for not walking or I can walk. My son had a hip replacement at 26 due to bone on bone issues and his doctor was not shy about telling him he had to lose 30 pounds before surgery, so I don't think your doctor was being polite. I purchased a small stationary peddler from a used sports shop and watching tv & peddaled, sat at my computer and peddaled. You have to take your life back and I understand your pain. I am raising 3 grands and I can't do anything...now everyday I make an effort once an hour to get up, go outside and take a walk around my yard or to the mail box and back. Don't let the pain keep you down, get up and take one baby step at a time, I have been here 10 days or so and have lost 7 pounds and walk everyday in pain!

From Heart to Hands, I quilt!

Hello everyone. I am new to SparkPeople and am glad to see there are others who are on the same journey I am. I am 55 and have 250 lbs to lose. I have bone on bone in both knees, which makes walking very painful. I have been told I will require total knee replacement, but that I was too young. I believe he just didn't want to tell me I was too fat. I want my life back. I want to take walks with the love of my life, my husband of 32 years, go camping, go to stores because that is where I want to go-not because they are the store with the motorized wheelchair.....just do those small, everyday activities that are unattainable at this point.

56 years old, definitely more than 100 lbs to lose, and with osteoarthritis. I also have problems getting out of breath doing almost anything. Yep, guess I belong here. Swimming sounds wonderful but I have this unreasonable problem with scaring others at the pool - an aging dragon in a swimsuit is not the best look. Besides, work and school makes timing difficult.
I do walk, even if it now a total of 6 blocks, I actually count it in steps, about 300. Better than the 100 I was doing before. The 9 minute upper body workout with Nicole is helpful. Even without using hand weights, I can feel it working.
We are working on portion control. Hubby does the cooking but he brings me the information for what he makes, and is measuring our portions. My problem is being too stingy with myself while at work, so that I can have treats with hubby at night.

I need to lose 100 pound to have knee surgery. I found the limit mobility exercises on the site a great help. I cannot walk so I go to water aerobics 3 days a week.
Really need to get portion control under control

goal is to be able to walk again

I'd also like to thank you for reposting the website. Just starting out on this journey. I would like to lose 150 lbs but my goal at the moment is 100. That seems daunting task right now. Never have had the will power before and for years I just give up even trying. But for months I knew I had to do something! I found the SP site by accident. Started getting excited and motivated. My husband never had a weight issue but in the last years or so he has found he is diabetic, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. So since he needs to watch his diet it will be easier to fix healthier meals and he would be bring all the junk food home. Which was always my down fall. I didn't buy it at the store but he did and if its in the home I'm going to eat it. Strange he weights 155 and I weigh 300 but cholesterol is 137, blood pressure has been borderline for years but not on meds but do need to watch my sugar it's a little high. I just have knee problems had a knee replacement 4 yrs ago and the other one needs replaced but trying to hold off as long as I can. So I have trouble walking. Really no exercise for years, at work I sit at a computer for 90% of the time they come home and sit with a book and read. I did buy me a an 3 wheel bike a few weeks ago and have been riding that, love it!!! I will admit I can't ride too far but increasing the distance every week even if only a few extra blocks. I couldn't ride a regular to wheel bike because my balance is terrible!! I have vertigo really bad but no fear of falling on my adult trike. It's good exercise. At first I worried about what my big butt would look like on that little seat but decided I wasn't going to worry about it. I NEEDED to do some kind of exercise and I couldn't walk because my vertigo makes me dizzy when I walk outside BUT I can ride a bike and I'm ok as long as I don't turn my head to look backwards for cars. A mirror fix that problem. And kids love my granny bike! Every time I past one from toddlers to teenagers they tell me I have a cool bike! LOL I haven't had one rude person make a comment on the fat lady on the bike. So if you are able to go bike it's good exercise and low impact. Sometimes it makes my knee hurt but not any worse they walking. Ok I'll shut up now. Sorry I'm usually a very shy, quite person except when I write. Looking for friends on this journey so if you want to friend me that would be great. emoticon

Thanks for re-posting this info. I haven't been a member long and had not seen this page. I am glad to have one more resource to help. There is no way I can do all the exercises that the young and healthy are trying. I would end up in a puddle on the floor and not be able to get back up.

It's so hard. I go to a woman's gym on Silver Sneakers.....and the other woman look at and whisper to each about me. I started swimming at the city's rehab pool...which is wonderful. Ironically, I am just another heavy disabled person. The pool is working out great and much easier on my body. It's open year around too. I would love to find a yoga tape for people who can't get down on the floor. Any suggestions? thx

I can't walk until about 10:30am and I am in constant pain so am looking for non-walking exercises. The doctor wanted me to do a stress test on Thursday, I gave her one of those looks and then she said, oh I guess that wouldn't work. duh! LOL. Anyhow, I just bought a yoga tape for arthritis in the hopes that it would be gentle enough that i would keep using it and productive enough that I would keep using it. LOL

God bless your endeavours

Hi everyone,

I posted this on the June chat before I saw the "Limited Mobility Center."

I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Linda, I'm 54 and have lots of weight to lose. I've been yo-yo'ing since my teen years. I lose weight and then gain it all back..ugh
I need the support of a group. If I log on every day it will keep my accountable.

A little about me.
I've been married to my wonderful hubby for 27 yrs. We were never fortunate to have children BUT we have three 10 month old kittens named Sage, Nutmeg, and Pepper that were abandoned by their mother. I've had my stomach stapled (lost 140 lbs and gained it back), a stomach bypass (lost 150 and gained it back). I guess I haven't been able to get it through my head that once you lose the weight you can't go back to eating the way you were if you want to keep it off. Easier said than done. I've had both total knee replacements 4 years ago and have gained since then which isn't good for my knees. My hips are bad know but I can't have surgery because I'm too heavy. Exercise is a real problem for me since I can't walk without a cane. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

OK I got that off my chest..I don't want to be a downer..lol

I have a doctor appointment Monday..oh boy..why is it they always want to weigh you? I wonder what he would say if I said "no, not this time buddy"?

As you can tell from my username I love coffee. I try to only drink 3-4 per day. I joined the water challenge 8 per day. I should be able to handle that.

I'll check in tomorrow, have a great evening everyone! emoticon

Linda

Welcome Calliezmom glad to have you here. I've only been a member for about 3 weeks and have been amazed at the support that is here. There is tons of info to help also. I have so many issues to work on I can't choose which one to tackle first. I try one then go to another. I need to stop and pick just one and get busy. That's the hard part. I want it all at once.
Keep looking around the site. There is so much stuff I'm not sure I will ever find it all.

Welcome emoticon

Hi MOMLYS! I am turning 58 on July 8th and have about 120 pounds to lose - just joined SparkPeople today. I'm excited and I'm scared (scared because I'm afraid of failing, I guess). My husband has a few pounds to lose and needs more exercise and better eating habits, but overall is fairly good shape. We both work, but I have some mobility issues including RA and very bad joints, I too fall easily and have sustained 2 catastrophic falls over the past 5 years involving multiple broken bones, fractured teeth, nerve damage, and a right knee that is totally blown. I know all about not leaving home because I was laid off after the last accident on temporary total disability and have found that my strength and stamina (and overall pain level) limits going out much. I am finally starting a new job on Monday, July 1st! It's not an easy feat securing a job with full benefits at this age and this weight but I finally did. The job is administrative, so the physical demands are minimal and it's only a 10 minute drive from my house. I was happy to read your message because it many aspects it seems so similar to my own situation.

I'd like support from this community as I begin this weight-loss journey. Today, June 25th is my first day and with your support I'm excited to see where I'll be one year from today.

Life is NOT a dress rehearsal!

Nice to know I'm not alone. I have felt alone for a long, long time.
I have been reading your posts and feel right at home. I am turning 57 this year and have over 100 lbs to lose (more like 150). I take about 25 pills every day just to try and keep things under control. Diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, high cholesterol. No thyroid (from cancer about 10 years ago), Sleep apnea, and the list goes on...
I have had multiple surgeries and it seems each surgery slows me down a little more. I am still able to walk but I'm very unsteady. I get short of breath within just a few minutes. I fall easily. I see myself needing at least a cane soon and eventually being much more limited. I don't leave home much because it takes too much work to get around.
I'm new to SparkPeople and still learning how everything works. I'm glad to find others that are struggling with similar issues like I am.
I have a husband that does not have a weight problem and does not understand the need to make changes around the house. He likes to have snacks around and then he goes off to work I have to try and leave them alone all day. I'm on disability and can no longer work so I just stay home and stare at the M&M's or the chips until I can't take it any longer and give in.
Thanks for all the info you are sharing, and all the support I feel here. It helps a lot!!! emoticon

Hi Everyone, I have read all of your post and I feel like we are all just a bunch of "peas in a pod". We all have the same things going on with our weight and physical ability's. I have been lacking in ambition and drive for far to long. I woke up the other day and said to myself, Now Robin, you are not getting any younger, what are you waiting for, get busy and get rid of this weight. I know it is easy to say that to myself, but, i need help. I will be 56 in a few days and am not finding it easy to do alone. I have no one to share these feelings of hopelessness with. Thank you all for letting me in and sharing with me. I exercised, i mean really exercised today with Coach Nicole and her video's. And I am feeling great.

Hi- I am new here, and applaud all of us for reaching out to one another and deciding to grab onto a better and more healthy life.

I am replying to the posting about the book written by Rochelle Rice: Real Fitness for real Women. Almost ten years ago, I started taking Yoga classes at her studio in NYC. It was amazing, and I found Rochelle to be the kindest, most caring person. She and the other women in the class (all very overweight but amazingly fit), made me feel immediately comfortable. With a permanent disability (terrible car accident), that does not allow me to flex one of my ankles, walk barefoot or get around without a forearm crutch, she gave me personal instruction on how to keep moving.

Sadly, my finances caused me to stop attending the classes. Sixty pounds have now added up and starting this month, May 2013, I'm on a new mission to once again reclaim myself.

Thank you for reminding me about Rochelle Rice and her book. I just looked at her website and want to share it with all of you, too. http://rochellerice.com/about-rochelle-ric

Best wishes to all!

I have RA and am working on loosing at least 50 if not 100 pounds to help reduce the stress on my body joints.
I found a great book for large women with mobility issues for workout ideas. Real Fitness for Real women. It has ideas for those who are chair bound. It has helped me loose so far 12lbs (no it was not water, trust me, I am so glad it came off my waist first. Makes sitting a little easier on me. Anyway I recommend the book highly.

I am so happy to find this conservation going on. Happy to chat with others who have the same challenges as I have.
I am in a power chair most of the time and over weight is not easy to say but I weigh 327 pounds and my legs do not hold me well anymore. I'm 64 years old and still work in my yard even with the chair. I rake and move along a little more slowly but I get things done at my pace.

I know there must be some of you that could help me find exercises I can do in the chair, would you please help me?

I will continue to strive for the best everyday I breathe.

I too fit right in. I'm 51 - more than 100 lbs to lose - 5 surgeries and a broken wrist in a little more than 2 years. 2 of those surgeries on my left foot and the last 2 (1 foot / 1 carpal tunnel) in the last 6 months. Now I'm starting to move a little again and every joint in my body aches, I'm tired and have constant headaches. I went to my dr last week - test ran for auto-immune disease and thankfully negative. I have to do the vit d, iron, blood sugars test this week. My dr said the pain could be caused by one of those or a reaction to a medicine I'm on. So, waiting to see what happens there.

I am considering getting a weighted hula hoop for exercise. I used to hula hoop years ago as a kid and I think it could be fun. My only fear is if the hoop is big enough to go around my waist. Anyone with any experience here?

I am just now getting back into tracking. I'm using a fitbit to track my steps. And tracking my food / other exercise on here... Today was my first day tracking. I did ok - I stayed in my calorie range and in my carb / protein goals.

Any encouragement, exercise ideas, recipes would be overwhelmingly welcomed.

I'm in the same boat, Lupus and Myastenia Gravis, too much movement and my tendons and joints get inflammed and can't move at all and with the MG my muscles give out after about six hours of being up and all I can do is piddle.

But I am losing weight and working on the increased activity, which should get better with more loss of poundage!

Glad you guys are here to listen!

I am so glad you are able to bike with your grandkids. Since learning about my Type 2 Diabetes this year, I have decided I have to make some changes to be around when I finally get some grandkids. I have two bad knees and bad back as well, so exercise is challenging. The peripheral neuropathy in my feet doesn't help either. But I have taken up trying to go bowling at least once a month and am looking at trying some seated exercises until I lose enough weight do more. Hand in there and we can do this with the support on this website. I am new to this so I can't wait to meet new people who can relate to what I am going through with weight and diabetes issues.

It is discouraging to not be able to move vigorously, but i just keep at it and it gets easier and easier little by little. The pool helps. My legs won't bend enough for the bike....which I love.
I still keep counting my calories!!

Nice to know I'm not the only over 50 over weight person with bad knees and a bad back. Past time to do something about the weight. I learned this week that I can't do much about the age. Even though 60 will be here in a few short months I still felt in my mind like I was much much younger. I have bad knees and a bad back and my body doesn't do the things I want but I still thought I could do these things if I really wanted to. So the grandkids were getting out their bikes and getting them ready for spring and I thought how much fun is that! I used to love riding bikes. Well, my six year old grandson had his training wheels off and was just learning to ride when I jumped on a bike and almost fell flat on my face. He was doing better than I was, I simply have no balance. The next day I was walking through the store and there was an adult tricycle. I rode it in the store and loved it, bought it and brought it home and the kids and I are having so much fun. It is easier on the knees than I thought it would be and so far it isn't making my back ache. We haven't gone for any long rides though, but here we are me and the grandkids all riding our bikes together. At least I am getting some exercise and making some memories.

I am sorry to hear about your problems, but am glad to hear you are trying to do the chair exercises. At no time is any exercise easy let alone chair. But if you can do a few mins. a day is better then no mins. Hang in there and do the best you can do. emoticon emoticon

I understand about the prednisone ... I've been on a lower dose for 11 years now due to a polymyalgia that won't go away (it usually goes away in 2-5 years). I now have lymphedema and on top of being morbdily obese, having collapsed ankles...I now have to tightly bandage my legs daily. I am not exercising and I know I need to be but chair exercises are all I can do and everytime I try, I can do no more than a few minutes...it's very discouraging....I'm just learning to bandage my legs and I'm going to give it a few days then start exercising again on Wednesday. I know i have to stick with it and it will get better.

I've had 6 leg operations in the last 3 years. I was getting in shape and really dropping the pounds until I had to take large doses of predisone (spelling, sorry) for about 2 months. Now I can move and my weight is continually skyrocketing. The absolute only method for me to remedy this is to count every calorie to ensure I am not over eating in any aspect of my diet.

hard, hard, hard.....but, I am learning to make lower calorie meals to accommodate my appetite and stay within my limits

I have been experiencing tendonitis in my right foot for several months. It has really killed my daily walks. I spend my days off of work trying not to have to walk much as when I do work I'm on my feet A LOT (I'm an RN) I was fortunate enough to find a recombant bike at a yard sale (best $10 I ever spent!) and use it daily (well almost daily). It doesn't hurt my foot, gets my HR up and has a built in timer along with other stuff I haven't figured out how to use yet. I highly reccomend one if you can find one.

13wk/13lb challenge: 1/1/13-4/2/13
Wk 1=1 Wk2=1 Wk3=0 Wk4-1 wk5= wk6= wk7= wk8=
wk9= wk10= wk11= wk12= wk 13= Total=

I continually strive to be the person my dogs think I am.

I have tendonitis in my right foot and I cannot exercise either. My yoga teacher gave (sold) me a cd that has chair exercises. It is great! At least we can do some exercise!

Went to dr yesterday and got released from PT. Got approval to do the water aerobics at the rehab pool. They have classes 3x a week and they are more my speed at least at my current speed. The pool is nice and very warm. The pool at the spa was cold and the aerobics program was not for anyone with any challenges. I tweeked my ankle xmas eve, so need a cortisone shot before I can even start. It is discouraging, but all in good time. Baby steps and I will persevere.

im the same way yall. i cant walk the track at our apartment even once around without stopping for awhile and cant walk places with hubby (like the grocery store as we have no car) because he walks too fast for me. i have bad legs, hips and lungs due to many ailments including arhtritis. i decided this year is the year im going to fight through the pain and use my stationary bike starting three days a week at 20 minutes at a time working my way up to 5 days a week at 30 minutes at a time. so far so good but its only the second week of january lol.

Oh Barb,
I was so encouraged to read your post!! I too have many of the problems that you do. I can barely walk some days, but I am getting ready to rejoin the YMCA here in my town. I want to ride horses again so badly. I am hoping that I will be able to by next summer.
Keep doing what you are doing, I am interested in your progress. Your success is encouragement to me.
Thank you for sharing.
Linda

Jesus is coming soon! Are you ready?
