OK...I have a beef tonight about my chicken! My son got me a bag of Great Value 'ALL NATURAL' Boneless, skinless Chicken breasts (with rib meat) Ice glazed...individually frozen. Wow, I thought...What a sweet boy he is! He told me, since I just went on the Atkin's Low Carb Diet, I don't eat the same things they all like, so, on one of those nights when I made them pasta, I could just pop a couple chicken breasts into the oven for myself! That was so sweet of him...so tonight I made them tuna and noodles with peas casserole and I popped a couple pieces of chicken in for me. I never season my food until I sit down to eat it and I took a bite and...OMG...what is THIS???? The taste of salt assaulted my mouth!' I ripped the bag out of the freezer and here it was...they had pumped chicken broth with 220 mg's of salt in it into the chicken! Salt makes my body blow up like a balloon and my ankles turn into pigs feet! And what, pray tell is 'dietary fiber'??? It is listed as an additive in this 'all natural' chicken! I am still not quite over being furious. This could have blown my diet right out of the water. ...So everybody ate and I had nothing...until tonight and I made an omelette. Whew...OK...done blowing off now...But it taught me a valuable lesson...read, read, READ those labels!
Now we all KNOW that mayonnaise has no carbs because it has no sugar....The same kid brought me home a jar...I looked and ....say WHAT???? It had 1 carb!....They put high fructose corn syrup in it to make it taste better!...The only difference between that and actual salad dressing was the salad dressing used real sugar. It is getting harder and harder to get a pure product anymore! I am sending my son back tomorrow to get a jar with NO carbs or sugars or corn syrup.
Even if you are not on a low carb diet...READING THOSE LABELS IS IMPORTANT! Look for products with the least amount of sodium...they lace so much salt in everything it is bloating America! Look for products with the least amount of carbs and fillers and preservatives. If you took a dictionary and looked up some of those compounds they use in our food you will go shopping with a magnifying glass just to make SURE the fine print isn't trying to sneak something past you!
