Oh for certain....I just love Thrift Stores and yard sales.
In July I was doing a lot of looking for props for my Church's Vacation Bible School.
In addition to different quotes from the bible, a different country was featured.
The class rooms in use were decorated to represent each of the countries.
A lot of things I had at home, but I did find extra items at my favorite shopping places.

Of course I'm always looking for stuff for myself...Don't need anything really, but if it catches my eye and its cheap, I will find a place for it.

Love thrift store and rummage sales too. I think the best buy I ever got was a Porky Pig cookie jar for 50 cents. I also look for a lot of craft materials at them.

This week at auction I bought an upholstered chair for my bedroom for $14, 2 green Pyrex bowls with clear bottoms for $7 and some candlesticks famed in Spain for $2. Will sell the Pyrex and the candlesticks.
Enjoyed myself!

How nice of your friend to give you those dishes!

Found a few things. But the one thing I was looking for my SIL had. She had bowls that matched the set of dishes I have. She bought them about 25 years ago and had nothing to match them, but used them as fruit bowls for us. I was wowed when I realized they matched mine and she gave them to me. Wasn't that nice!?! DH found a few guy buys and he was really happy with that. I bought a nice necklace, still in the box, for $1.50 for me and a watch for $4. Those were probably my better buys. A few odds and ends I will have to sort out when I get home. All in All it was a nice shopping experience.

Last weekend I went to my auction house and bought some dishes for $20 . Sold the plates on eBay for 39, the salad plates for 38, and I just listed the bowls for 48! They are antique sapphire blue and hard to find. I also bought some Indian brass 3 small pieces .for $6. Sold the Buddhist tiger claw bell for $23, a covered brass and enamel trinket dish for $7.50 and still have a small vase listed for $5.00. This is fun! Wish I could do that every week...

I going to put my 2cents in....I am a thrift store, consignment, and GW shopper. I have found many bargins in all of them. Mostly clothes though since I work in an office, I have found a lot of good tops, sweaters and shoes. I bought a dress this past weekend at a consignment store that was 75% off making the price a little over 4.00. I went home washed it and wore it to work and one gentleman here just came and said I really like that dress and so I told him that I got it at the consignment store then he said I am going to have to take my wife there to shop. I kind of laughed because I am a cheap skate for real. Even when I go shopping I go straight to the clearance rack and if I don't see something there I am looking buys under 20.00.

I have learned to be frugal and it pays off for me and my husband loves it too because I save him money.

Didn't find any dishes. The rain kept us from going to the town wide. However, we did go to a GW and DH found an almost new denim shirt/jacket. I think it was so nice because it may have been miss sized and didn't get much wear.

Some relatives were disposing of the contents of a house they had sold and I got some $1 bag items--mostly clothes. However, the one top I bought was still tagged and the original price was $20, marked down to 13.99, and I got it for about 20 cents in the bag sale. It was an outfitters top. Since I am back to mostly mediums, it was a great buy! emoticon

Congrats, Sharon, on the grill buy! My best buy so far was a Shenanigan's sweater. Beautifully beaded and brand new. All the tags still on it. That was a few years ago at a Good Will sale and I only paid 29 cents for it. Have not had a bargain like that for quite awhile. At a Good Will in Ohio one time, I brought an educational book home I bought for my DGDs and there was a $20 bill inside. How about that?

Sheila, since I mostly collect old collectible dishes, I usually don't get rid of them. I have some packed away in sets for the DGD. What kind of stuff do you downsize and what do you usually keep? I did put some odds and ends in a consignment store near by, but sold very little and the store eventually closed due to owner illness.

There are more sales coming up Sat. The last week in July there is a town wide at our County seat. Things will start winding down soon so we need to take advantage of what's left of the 'happy hunting season.'

Hi guys,
Does anyone sell stuff or do you just collect it for personal use. I am trying to downsize and get rid of some less valuable stuff and of course can't part with most of it.

My best yard sale find recently was a brand new, never taken out of the box, indoor grill for $5.00. It works real well and doesn't make the kitchen as hot as using the stove to cook. I can grill meat and slices of zucchini on it at the same time.

Hello happy hunters of bargains!

Was happy to find a creamer/sugar bowl set to match my dishes today at a town wide yard sale. The set was only a dollar and it is in excellent shape! Also, in the same town, was able to find some cutout wooden hearts for crafting at a reduced cost. Pleased with my bargains!

Hope you All are still hunting - And Finding! - bargains!

Great deals is the name of the game! Who doesn't love a bargain! I so enjoy finding some crafting supplies that are brand new. Also some new fabric remnants at a fraction of the new prices. I use some small pieces to dress the little dolls I make. Have not had time to do that lately, but am hoping to do so this fall. The church is planning a craft/bake sale fund raiser this fall and I am hoping to have enough things made to rent a table.

Happy Hunting to All! May you be blessed with a bargain! emoticon

With all the heat I think auctions can be a better option. Sometimes they get pricey though. I tour through the thrift stores and I have a sort of down and dirty auction place I go for cheap stuff to fix up. Their furniture goes for nothing unless it is a really old antique -- then it jumps up. I am not a dealer so I'm not really looking for that stuff. So I go to Willie's for some cheap fun and sell some of the stuff on ebay. I have to get on ebay today and get some things listed. If I don't make anything selling it I can't afford my junkie habit. Can anyone relate?

Did not get to yard sale over the weekend. Too busy with the activity at the church. Hoping to find some good buys this weekend. Still looking for dishes to match my set. I am going to try looking on Etsy. They have some folks selling collectibles on there. Happy Hunting to All!

This has gotten me going again...will probably do some yard saling this weekend. We were out in Memphis and Dallas last week and it was in the 100s for 3 days...if it gets like that here Ill be indoors as well. What we have is the humidity and we've had rain all week. Nice today though.

Going to bed...will post tomorrow.

I don't buy a lot of furniture at sales. I do look for crafting items and things for the DGK. And I am always on the lookout for dishes to match my collections. The most recent ones are on my blog page on the "picture" link. I am finding it is hard to match those. Didn't realize there were so many different designs of the clear cut glass.

Carol, we too have had a new store open in a nearby town w/consignment items. It seemed a bit pricy, but oh, well, when you find someting you really like in good condition, I guess it is worth a little more.

About the stain on the marble, I tried a few different suggestions in a stain removal book and what I found online, but nothing has completely gotten it off yet. It is still very pretty with the different swirls of browns and tans. And girl is it heavy!

Keep up the good hunting and share the good news about your finds and bargains.

Happy hunting!

Wow-wee! I started this thread a million years ago and I'm so glad you brought it back again, Barb. I am still a thrift store/yard sale/estate sale junkie emoticon Here in the Phoenix Valley we have a lot of estate sales because this is a huge retirement area. We also have several new stores in and near my city that sell estate items, and now we have gotten several new "high-end" thrift stores and more consignment shops. I've been scoping out new places to "hunt" as I drive around doing my errands, but it is just too darn hot to do much thrifting/rummaging right now. With temps ranging in the low-mid 100's, by the time you jump back in your vehicle and head for the next place, the A/C has just barely kicked in and you are there emoticon My good friend, and fellow bargain hunter, is up in Washington right now but we talk on the phone every week and I'm laying out all the new places we will be hitting when she gets back in early October.

As for my best find - it's probably still the Japanese Secretary I found at a little shop that specialized in resale of furniture and nick-knacks in WI. Many of the pieces were antiques or "near-antiques" and this particular piece was a gem. I still love it and it is the one piece of furniture I have that I would not part with. emoticon

My next hunt is going to be for a table to go between two chairs in my LR. It's one of those "I'll know it when I see it things." emoticon I do buy clothing when I see something that looks gently used or still has the tags on it. I'm only 5' tall so it's a challenge to find jeans or slacks - I mostly find tops. As for nick-knacks, I'm pretty well "over full" in my china cabinet and don't really have room for much. I would like to find another painting though. I found a great painting in a gorgeous frame at my church's annual rummage sale. I paid $5.00 for it and I'm fairly certain it's worth at least $150.00.

Well, happy rummaging everyone. Let me know about your great finds, and always remember it's the "thrill of the hunt" that really counts! emoticon

Oh my gosh -- this is a passion of mine. Nothing more fun to do! Hey, how did you get that stain out of the marble? I have seen pieces like that but didn't know how or if the stain would come out. I love to refinish things as well. We don't have a basement to work in and our garage is full of DHs stuff and hotter than blazes. I am still determined to get a piece or 2 done this summer. How do you find good sales?

Just wanted to resurrect this theme on second hand shops, flea markets, yard sales. Anyone out there finding any good buys? DH bought an old set of dishes for me for our anniversary in June. I saw them, liked them, he bought them. Pics on my blog site. Now looking for some pieces to match. Big town wide sale nearby this weekend. Starting today.

Great shopping buys to you all! emoticon

Like sorting through things, too. I think the best furniture find was a marble-topped coffee table at a yard sale. Actually, my husband wanted it more than I did. It had a stain and a mark, not very large, but we got it for $5. I had to move it out of the living room when the GK were young. I was fearful with all their antics they would fall onto the corners of the table and hurt themselves. Still have it stored in another room for space sake. Have not found many buys lately. Hoping to over the weekend. DD, her friend and I are going to cross over into Maryland tomorrow and stay over at a retreat near the PA/MD border on Mt. Davis.

Have a great evening, All!

Wow, Fran, that must have been a blast getting to go through all those boxes and never knowing what "treasures" you might discover along the way. It sometimes surprises me that there are people out there who turn their noses up to yard sales and thrift stores! Especially when these are the same people who "talk a good game" when it comes to recycling! I find yard sales and thrift stores a fantastic way to recycle as well as grab some great finds for pennies! All the clothing I'm donating this fall are things that are too big for me now - many of these pieces are like new and it would be a shame to just throw them out when someone else could get use out of them. Now, here's a little honesty, I just love Chico's clothing - and the sizing 0-4 makes one feel svelte emoticon Chico's is on the expensive side, however. And, I certainly wouldn't want to buy a pair of pants for $75.00 only to give them away in 3 months because they are too big! I have several great tops and pants in my wardrobe that are Chico's and I found them all at a little thrift store run by the local hospital! emoticon As for furniture finds - some years ago I wandered into a used furniture store and found a gorgeous Chinese Secretary. I picked this piece up for under $500 and believe me, it was worth much more. It has always been the one piece of furniture that has received compliments from everyone who has visited my home. It is unique and unusual and I would never have found this beautiful and functional piece if I hadn't wandered into that second-hand furniture store! emoticon

I just love 2nd hand stores, flea markets and yard sales. My love for all these came about when I was executor of an estate.

The deceased had saved everything, even old tv aluminum tins and put them in boxes in another house. I got to sift through them and once in a while would come across a little vase or dish that was lovely! My finding stacked up and spurred me to go through all the boxes. I was hooked by then. Imagine finding part of a Limoges set next to an old tv tray?

So give me any of the stores, yard sales, etc. and I will gladly go.

Yes, I love bargain hunting at charity shops (In the UK that's what we have - most charities have a shop selling second-hand items). I bought a lovely pure wool skirt recently. Now the weather has cooled down I will get a chance to wear it! I think it's a great way of recycling plus saving money plus having a bigger variety of well-fitting clothes as I change shape. A winning combination!

Just love finding a bargain. Especially finding clothes with tags still on them that fit perfectly for anywhere from .29 to a few dollars. The 29 cent item was a brand new Shennanigan's sweater, embroidered with beads, beautiful at a 29 cent sale at a local Good Will.

I also do garage/yard sales. Yesterday I bought a large basket with a large handle on it. It was about the size of a half bushel basket for just a dollar. At same sale, I bought a heavy crystal bowl for a buck. Planning to put both to use over the holidays.

Love a good hunt and bagging the bargains.

Lately I've been enjoying shopping at a consignment store in my hometown. I'm thankful for the weight loss but like to wear clothes that fit. It's been fun to buy clothes at great prices knowing that I can "turn them in" when they don't fit anymore and get something different!

I like shopping at thrift stores, you be surprised you can buy new items and clothes that people give away. Especially buying clothes for my grandson since he grows out of them so fast you
don't spend much money.

Yes, I too have become a thrift store junkie. I have started buying clothes at the Goodwill in Orland Park since I started losing weight. They have a dressing room where you can try the clothes on. They let you bring in 10 pieces at a time. I have found some very nice things that fit perfectly and I don't even have to worry about shrinkage. Like you, I don't want to keep spending a lot of money on clothes that will soon not fit. Even after I meet my goal I think I will continue shopping there for everyday clothes. I have also found some very nice, like new stuff in the home furnishings department, but the number one reason for going at this time is for clothes that fit. I'm so. Glad to hear from others that are doing the same. God bless you! emoticon

I love a good bargain but am more likely to go to yard/garage sales than thrift stores. I found a baker's rack for my kitchen for just $190 dollars a few years ago and it is still going strong. I always wanted one of those and was so excited to find this one. The sides are decorated with grapes and grape leaves and the bottom is a wine rack that can hold up to 24 bottles of wine and I still have 3 shelves above that for cookbooks and other things. Sweet! emoticon .

I was sitting here thinking about going "on the hunt" next week with my neighbor/buddy. We "go hunting" at thrift stores the way men go looking for that 12 point Buck emoticon I mean we are seriously addicted to this "sport" and I'm wondering if there are others like us on this team emoticon

We went to one of the local stores this last week and I got a few great bargains: I got a brand new Paula Dean kitchen scale for $8.00 (very useful as I Spark my way to my goal!) Nothing Paula Dean comes cheap as I'm sure you know. It is brick-red in color and looks kind of old-fashioned - so darn cute on my counter instead of that sorry old postage scale I was using emoticon I also found a like-new pair of gray woman's Dockers that fit perfectly - paid $3.00 for these babies! Next find was 2 - count 'em 2 - Vera Wang tops that are just as comfortable as they are adorable! I paid $2.00 each for these and they look like new. Now anyone who shops at Kohl's knows that anything Vera is not cheap so, what a deal this was! All in all, it was a grand haul and I feel like I bagged the big one and don't even need to spend money on a taxidermist emoticon This is also a great way to have clothes that "fit" as you head toward your goal weight. I know that the size I buy now will not fit me when I reach my goal weight and buying thrift is the way to go so I'm not wasting money on things I'll wind up giving away. It's just another way to recycle emoticon

So, do you thrift emoticon If so, what have been some of your all-time great finds emoticon

I'm going to go to some re-sale furniture places shortly to look for a small table and two chairs for my kitchen breakfast area. This will be a challenging hunt but very rewarding if I can find what I'm looking for emoticon

By the way, did I mention the brand spanking new pair of strapped Sketcher Shape-Up sandals I found back a while ago for $5.00 - someone must have bought these or got them as a gift and decided they didn't like//want/need them! I saw these sweet things for $85.00 in the store! They are like walking on clouds and all for 5 bucks emoticon Gosh, I love a bargain!
