lots of praise for the 'plank' emoticon

Need to see if I can find an alternative my toes do not bend that way.

I do 250 crunches (setups) daily this takes 10" with some leg lifts in-between

It's the cardio for my weight loss, but TNT is doing my stomach PROUD emoticon

My total favorite ab/core workout is the plank. So effective and very hard to do. I love front planks, side planks and hip roll planks. I am up to 2 minutes on the plank now. to me a true plank is done on the elbows not the hands.
Another favorite is the throwdown (takes 2 people)
Another is the passing the ball from hand to feet.

Thanks for posting this variation in the way crunches can be done. I don't have a problem getting off the floor when doing them the "normal" way, but this is a way to keep your body guessing about what's coming next. It eliminates the "boredom" of doing something the same old way.

When I'm on my treadmill, I like to watch that which I've recorded on my DVR. Makes me feel better than if I'd watched it "vegging out", or worse, still, snacking.

At the YMCA, however, on either the treadmill, or the recumbent bike, I'm at the mercy of whatever Comcast and the mean gods of video repair (and these gods are both vengeful and incompetent ;-() allow me to see.

The Y, however, has the advantage that other old duffers (like myself) and many other diverse types share "my agony". ;-) I especially enjoy the young moms on the steppers and treadmills who have their babies in strollers so they can watch them while they work out.

Power (of exercise) to the people! ;-|

I'm also a fan of walk away the pounds. I found one last night that I hadn't done in a long time and it really gave my thighs a much needed workout. I only had time for 3 of the 5 miles, but will do the last 2 tonight plus another from last night.

For my abs I like kick boxing -- I have a tape that is fairly low intensity and it's really helping my balance.

Hi. I just started using my rebounder, and quite like it. I found that my calf muscles really hurt, while I was using it. I guess I have to build them up.

I printed these out to try, too! Thanks for sharing! I, too, have back and joint problems and I really need to strengthen my core before I have my back surgery in December. I'm hoping this will help.
I also have several Leslie Sansone Walking workouts. I enjoy those and I like the idea about turning the sound down and using my own music. Thanks for the tip! ~Becky

I also enjoy the Walk Away the Pounds videos - I have 3 of them that I've dusted off now and have started using again. I have a huge collection of other much more strenuous workout videos, but right now getting back into the working out thing this is all I can handle. About 2 years ago I popped in a Jillian Michaels (Biggest Loser) video - hurt my back and was a year before I was feeling up to doing anything again. I should have known better - but I was feeling super motivated that day and was bored with Leslie Sansone - I paid the price for sure! Now I'm trying to get back in the groove - and have found something that has really motivated me when doing the video: I turn off the sound on the tv and crank up my own music. I can still follow the moves without listening to her repeat the same stuff everyday - kind of gets on my nerves. I think I'm actually getting a better workout because I'm incorporating some dance, it's more fun and I'm moving more. emoticon

Hope these will work for you. I can't do floor exercises anymore because of back and joint problems. I can get on the floor but getting up without having a chair or something to help pull myself up is a thing of the past. I have been doing some of the abs exercise in the pool and I think it is helping - my stomach feels a little tighter then it did.

I am a newcomer here. I was just reading over some of the posts and am really wanting to try out some of the stand up ab exercises. I was never a big fan of the floor stuff as it always seemed to take a toll on my neck. Guess I never had a good form with it. Hopefully, I will achieve some results this time around.emoticon

Just wanted to say that I love the Walk Away the Pounds programs, too. I see that there are some new ones available and also ones you can download to your computer. How cool is that?

On a day I can't get outside to walk or I just feel like dancing, I put on one of my many video concerts and rock out. I can really swing my arms and dance. It is a great workout and always leaves me smiling.

Rock on, teamies!

Sounds great J. I'm going to get back to doing my Walk Away's this week. I have a bum right hip - think it's arthritis (even the doctors and physical therapist couldn't say what it was - called it bursitis for a while but they don't know.) My guess is arthritis because my dad had it in his hip and they say it's hereditary. It was pretty manageable until last Aug. when I fell flat on my back and it's been a lot worse since then. Maybe the Leslie Sansone DVD's will help - I'll just have to start out slow until I know how my hip will react. The stepping to the side is probably going to be the hardest for me. Good luck with your program - it sounds like you are really benefiting from it, especially your back emoticon

yes it is, I have 7 of them I love them, I have the walk away the fast and firm 4 really big miles, the 5 mile walk, and my 5 mile fat burning walk, and 5 really big miles, they have some really good abs training in them, that include all those parts that you mentioned and love the stretch band and belt, also uses 2 pound hand weights. and best of all I can do a little mini jog now. never thought I would be able to do that since I had back surgery but I am able to do a wee little one. and My back is getting stronger and with the walk at home program you won't injure yourself!

I can tell you this those exercises do work, takes a while but they do work, I have a walk at home dvd that I just got and it uses every one that you listed and they are working on that belly and it is shrinking now.

Like Carol, I never liked doing any kind of crunches…
Since my waist line is not to be found, I am also looking for no-crunches abs exercises…
I recently found on you tube – ‘Standing Abs Exercises - 10 Minute Standing Abs Workout’.
It burns 70 calories for a woman of 135 pounds, and about 88 for a man weighing 185 (many more if you are heavier…)
It would be nice to hear your views on the video

Mennoly, I agree with you. In most cases, loosing weight helps us get off the floor emoticon. In my case, it's more of a medical issue. I got excited about these ab exercises because my problem getting off the floor is due to stiff joints from a cancer drug I have to take for another 4 years - plus I fell and landed flat on my back on a tile floor last year, broke my wrist and threw my whole back out. I used to hike in the mountains 2-3 times a week with DH, and I can't do that any more right now. Hopefully, some day I'll be able to do these things again but I have to be realistic - I may not be able to. I have a good friend who is in her late 50's and needs both knees replaced already. She helps out with a sick grandchild and has a terrible time getting on the floor with this toddler and getting back up. I'm sending her these exercises too because I know she's trying to slim down and these will be a big plus for her. Hopefully, these will be helpful for those with medical conditions that cause them to have a problem getting off the floor without help. emoticon

I am 59 and teach low impact Zumba...I just read that same article because one of the songs I teach is for abs and we are doing some of what was listed in addition to other exercises while standing that I got from the DVDs we get from Zumba.
I would much rather do ab exercises standing up so this article was confirmation that at least I'm doing something right!!

Not that I am in love with getting up off the floor but as I have gotten more fit it is not the trial or horror it used to be. I can actually get up off the floor using just my legs and hands. No Furniture! I will try those exercises though. My baby tummy is the last thing to firm up.

I came across this on Yahoo today and thought I'd share with all of you. I can't get up off the floor the way I used to any more. Used to spring up - now I find myself crawling to the nearest piece of furniture to boost myself up emoticon. I never liked doing ab crunches anyway and now the thought of getting on the floor to exercise just doesn't compute. Take a look!

1) Knee Cross Crunch
This move is going to work every muscle in your stomach. To perform this move: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a dumbbell in one hand. Extend the arm with your dumbbell over head and put your other hand on your hip for balance. Now lower the arm that was in the air as you simultaneously bring the opposite knee up across the body so that your elbow and your knee meet. Hold this position for about a second and perform the desired number of reps. When done with one side, complete the same thing on the other side.
It's important to make sure you are getting your knee above the hips during this move. This is what is going to target your lower abs. (The dumbbell is optional. If you are just starting out, you can perform this move only using your bodyweight.)

2) Standing Bicycle Crunch
Think you need to perform bicycle crunches on a mat? Think again. This move works the same muscles that the bicycle crunch does -- all of them.
To perform this move: Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Place your hands behind your head with your elbows out and back in line with your shoulders. Bend one knee up across the body making sure it comes at least to hip height. Keeping the knee in the air, bend the opposite side of your upper body toward the lifted knee so that you can feel the crunch. Return back to the starting position and perform the desired number of reps, alternating sides. After you do this move, you may never do bicycle crunches on the floor again.

3) The Repeater
This move, derived from a step aerobics class, awesome because not only is it a killer ab exercises but it also provides a bit of a cardio and leg workout. Since this move is used mostly in a step class, you can use a step if you'd like but it's not necessary. It's just as good a move on the flat floor.
To perform this move: Stand with your body on angle with one leg in the front with the knee slightly bent and the other leg in the back straight but not locking the knee. You are going to place both of your hands up above your head (your body should be on an angle, you shouldn't be standing up straight.) Bring the knee in the front up as you pull your arms down to put the knee. Pretend that you are holding a coconut in your hands and you are trying to break it using your knee. Perform this move a pretty fast pace. When you are done doing the desired number of reps, repeat the same move on the other side.

PS I fall off the exercise ball so that isn't even an option emoticon
