I always take my water and healthy snacks to work with me. It is very easy for me to be tempted by things I don't need. I find by taking things with me I will eat what I bring.

Here's another one... Try making a list of what you might encounter and look up the calories. Keep that list at your desk so you know before you eat that a handful of chips has x-number of calories (but one has only x-number), a handful of cookies has x-number (but one has only x-number), and so forth. It helps me a LOT to see it in print (or on screen) before I eat.

For example, I love Kraft caramels... I can grab a handful, unwrap and gobble them up, without engaging one brain cell. But, instead I look them up and see that each one has 32 calories. That handful of 7 has 224 calories. So, I unwrap just one and sit without distraction and slowly eat it. I get to totally enjoy my 32-calorie caramel without busting my day. I was amazed when I actually tired it.

The trick is to open your eyes and keep them open. Shut down the auto-pilot.

CLYN, sounds like you have a good plan.

It is a difficult situation when you're tied to a desk. I know you can do this!

Thank you for the input.

I can't get up and walk around or get on-line, as it's an intensive document processing job. But I am going to pack a snack and take a bottle of water. I may indulge from time to time, but not like I have in the past. I feel that indiscriminate snacking is one of my biggest issues and one I'm working hard to correct.

Another thing you could try is practicing in your mind ahead of time what you will do and how you will react to the various scenarios that might present themselves, a rehearsal of sorts.

I did that for a dinner party I was going to and it helped a lot. Even while deep in conversation with wonderful people, I was able to put my fork down between bites in a subtle manner that helped me slow down, enjoy my food, and know when I had enough to eat.

Try it, might help!

With love and joy,
Kelly

Clyn, Everyone has given you very good ideas. I'm not working anymore but do have family here in the evening who sit and are eating chips, ice cream, etc. Usually I don't eat anything after dinner but if I do happen to have calories left over I will eat fat free chocolate ice cream or almonds.

I read in either Real Age or LifeScripts that If you think of something that smells real bad and associate it with that food that you don't want it any more. Just give it a try. It does work.

After you have been away from the unhealthy stuff like chips and such for a while, you will begin to see that they really don't taste as good as you remember them. Had a chip the other day, and spit it out. Yuck! I can't believe I ate that stuff.

Chocolate you can bring your own and pre-package it into individual servings. Only bring 1 serving each day. Sit down and enjoy it. Every bite. Relish it. You will be surprised how little it takes to get you to satisfied when you eat it like this.

Just unconsciously popping stuff in your mouth is not satisfying. Eat slowly, enjoy every bite no matter how "bad" it is. Then you will be more satisfied.

Good luck!

When I am tempted to eat something I think isn't all that great for me, I log it into SP first. Then, I can see how many calories it is and decide if it is worth it. Sometimes I will decide to eat a tiny amount, sitting down without distractions and truly savor it... a few calories can go farther than you might think.

The worst thing you can do is eat something first and then pretend there are no calories in it.

First log, then eat. Eventually, you will make good decisions about what you allow or not.

With love and joy,
Kelly

I've found a healthy alternative that really satisfies that chocolate craving. Sunsweet Plum Sweets. It's little pieces of dried plums (ok prunes) covered in dark chocolate. A serving is about 14 pieces-Cal 120, Fat 6g, Carb 19g, Protein 1g. I'm usually satisfied with 1/2 a serving. The packaging maintains that combining prunes and dark chocolate sends the antioxidant score through the roof.

Hi CLYN1958
Its all been said. Just keep healthy things around you. Even though it is so tempting to indulge, if you just steer away, you will be more satisfied with yourself that you did not weaken to that temptation.
I find keeping a personal journal helpful. If I don't want to record bad things, I don't eat them.

Lot of great advice being given. Basically, I do that which they speak of. I drink alot of water and eat rice cakes, granola (my own mix), and fruit. It is hard to resist, but after awhile, it gets easier! Good luck!

How about bringing your own snack to work. That way you can control the portion as well as the type.

If you can't beat 'em join them ... bring in baby carrots, grapes, your own whole wheat pita chips, chunks of angel food cake. Who knows you may make a couple converts and have some snack buddies.

Are you taking your own snacks in with you? I know it's hard! When people would order pizza for lunch I practically swoon but I would reach for my handful of nuts or a yoplait light yogurt. I know a lot of people don't believe in the 100 calorie snack packs but I lived by them. I could have cookies or crackers and know exactly how I was doing!

Good luck! emoticon

People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who really make it in this world are the ones who get up and look for the circumstances they want and if they can’t find them, they make them.

I know what you mean, I work in schools and there are always foods to tempt me. I have found that often just a taste will help, I don't ever eat a whole portion. I do eat chocolate daily, I just don't eat very much. I don't think a small handful of chips or 1 piece of chocolate hurts you and part of changing habits is learning how to eat moderately!

I am trying to be more mindful about my eating. I am incorporating more fruits/veggies into my diet, preferably raw.

Problem: At work people bring in snacks and drink pop. I'm talking about every night, Monday through Friday. It is difficult watching them eat chocolate and chips/pretzels and swigging down the pop. I need some help with motivation to keep me from munching on this stuff. I eat tic tacs and chew gum, and take water. Even when I swear I will not partake, I find myself eating a cookie or a handful of chips. The temptation is hard for me to resist.

Any tips for me on this?
