To get the ticker, go to your sparkpage and hit "Edit". At the lower left of your page, there is the option for the ticker and the little markers. When you input your weight on your start page, it will move the ticker character. Welcome!!

Hallo I just joined this pm. I'm 57 yrs old/young depending on how I feel. Trying to get a bit thinner and fitter for the summer. It's so easy to gain weight but a pain to lose.
I have bronchitis and asthma, with arthritis in most joints but really bad in one ankle, in all it makes moving a drag. I am determined to walk each day as it will keep me a little bit fitter, losing 18- 20 kilos would also help. How do we get the little strips at the bottom of messages to show how much we are losing looks like a good incentive

I agree that is hard to go back to the fitter days of our youth, I'm not convinced that metabolism is all to blame..I think we just get more sedentary
My family trait is heart disease..my father's family have all died in their 50's and early 60's and for me the thought of succumbing to heart disease through being over weight is the boost that I need to really work to make this happen...The weight crept on so slowly...I always felt I was active...obviously not active enough and coupled with bad eating habits...Now I am 50 it's time to fix this once and for all... I'm not ready to leave my family yet.

I'm definitely going to try the certo remedy...the joints in my fingers just started to hurt when I am playing the harp...

Hi Mitsy,
You will probably laugh at this one....but...
Certo is pectin, the stuff you buy at the grocery store any time after strawberries ripen....you use it to make freezer jam....they usually have it displayed in a section with canning jars, lids, boxes of fresh strawberries and bags of sugar...and of course bottles and cartons of certo (looks like boxes of jello)....During berry season...but...stores would probably have some on the shelf in the baking or jam section...you might have to ask the grocery clerk...

Coolinjeans, pardon my complete ignorance but what is "certo" That sounds like it just might help.

Beth, you are an inspiration to me!

I'll overcome this. It will just take some adaptation to give my body time to heal. I have a personal trainer, so I'll pick her brain and see what we can do.

After all, you sit still, you blow up (weight wise).

The weekend is here, as is the quilt show. Getting a lot of walking in. Have a great one, and move those bodies!!

Exercise, stretching and water will eventually help the old joints feel better....A natural treatment for arthritis is one tablespoon of certo in a glass of purple grape juice, three times a day and once the pain decrases, one glass daily for maintenance....and that comes from a real doctor...and...
Strengthening the muscles seems to help a lot...emoticon

Beth,

So sorry to hear about your injuries. Sounds like you are taking the right approach with the stretching. I have arthritis in my knees and have had to modify my approach to exercise and at first it was a little scary...I guess change often IS a little scary! What I found in making that change was a new appreciation for the way all the different parts of my body (including my mind) work together.

I am so inspired by the fact that you are not quitting, just modifying, and keeping at it! What a woman!

Have a great day!

Today I am feeling every one of my 55 years. I have been really pushing in my exercise and have developed a shin spline, sore hips and re-injured my rotator cuff on the right shoulder. It's amazing how hurting can make you feel older.

I am changing how I exercise, and changing it to stretching and such for a bit.

That said, I won't let my age stop me from being what I want to be!

BOICHOT1956: Sometimes, keeping a non-scale goal in mind helps me alot. I just keep doing what I know I can do and not worry too much about losing. You might try some exercises that you don't have to do outside...some floor exercises, etc, like crunches, leg lifts, stretching exercises or just running in place during commercials if you are watching TV. We can all squeeze a little more in here and there and it does add up.

True, as the years roll by, our metabolisms slow down and health problems crop up, but we can't let that discourage us. For our health and our children/grandchildren, our spouses and friends, we need to learn healthy eating and exercising habits that stick with us for the rest of our lives.

Spark People is the #1 place, in my opinion, to be able to establish and strengthen those habits!

We can and WILL do this!

Mitsy (I'm 50)

PS. Don't worry, BOICHOT1956, just keep all your goals in focus and the weight will come off, maybe slower than you would like, but it will come off.

I am at a standstill again. I am still 134 pounds. I have been eating less portions. Because of it being winter and I am staying with friends, I am limited to what I can do. When it gets nicer I can ride my bike. But I can't now, I am very limited because of the weather. I live in Michiganemoticon

Craig: You are so right. It's easy for us to use age as an excuse sometimes. At 53, I'm learning how much I really can do that I was never able to do or did not push myself to do when I was younger.

I recently added weight training to my routine by taking a class where I work and the coach really pushes us. I found out that I can do so much more than I thought I could. He really helps me.

You're right, Craig. Add into that equation all the eating baggage we're taught as kids and our hard-built habits, and it can be a real challenge.

But we are not doomed by our circunstances, merely challenged by them. We can do this together!

You know, in reflecting on the topic of this discussion, it's not entirely age that predicates how easy or hard weight loss might be. It's probably more how much overweight you are, how fit or unfit you might have become, and whether you have other health factors that make it more of a challenge. And of course with age, the more of those factors you might have accumulated, like me. There's kids and young adults that probably have even more factors working against them. So I count myself lucky in that regard.

Boichot, make sure you stay within your range, but if you are losing an average of 1-2 pounds a week, you aren't losing too fast.

Plateaus are a fact of life. To kick yourself out of it, adjust your food intake to the top part of your range, and change out your exercise. You may need to up the intensity a bit, or change what you do.

Good luck!!

BOICHOT 1956...I hear ya...Why do your friends think you are losing the weight to fast?
If you are losing 1 to 2 lbs a week it isn't coming off toooo fast....If you have hit a slump....you have to increase the exercise.....sometimes you have to increase the amount of food your eating.
If you aren't eating enough your body thinks you are in a famine and will slow down the metabolism and will store everything as fat for survival.
The same thing happens if your losing tooo much tooo quick....Slow and steady works....
if your eating the right amount of calories to maintain your body then increasing the exercise should jump start the metabolism........ don't worry it will happen!!emoticon

A fun exercise they had us do in Germany when we visited a historic home was to put felt slippers on, and we "skated" on the floors. Lots of fun!

Plus, with the ball you can take a break and do little balance exercises like lifting one foot, putting it down, picking up the next. You'd be surprised how hard this is, and how it strengthens your whole abodominal girdle!

I definitely had an easier time with the exercises when I was younger, but then I have been a slacker at strength training for the past 20 years. Walking has been a constant, but I have back problems and need to do the strength training.

Now that I am in early retirement, I have time for it and am doing it more consistently. As I do more it is getting easier. I've also taken up yoga, via dvd--because I don't like going to classes, something I used to do in college, and I am loving it.

So the extra time I have now is helping. And this site is amazing in its simplicity. It is working for me unlike other attempts to lose weight.

Good point. The most important goal at this point is good health. Sure it would be fun to be a stud / babe again, but that's just not going to happen. And it's totally unnessary. Feeling good and being able to do the things you still want to do is the real prize.

I have definitely noticed the difference in my age related weight loss journey. When I was younger, I could lose much faster but I'm trying to not let my life be controlled by a number on the scale now. I am going to set "process" goals now instead of just saying I want to lose a certain amount. I never liked the scales anyway. I used to let them set my moods...no longer. I know in my head what I need to do and now I just do it.

It may be harder as you age, but staying fit is a life-time venture. The good habits we develop help us to not gain back what we lost. They make us stronger physically and mentally. Everyday we chose what we will do. By not chosing, we have made the choice to continue with our bad habits. I think we often get discouraged and don't stick to our goals long enough to see a difference. If I do my fitness program by the hit or miss method, I usually miss. I love the team support. It helps keep my motivated even though my husband thinks I am spending too much time on the computer these days.

It may be harder but it definitely is not impossible. Like some of you I also have hydothyroidism besides being diabetic. I will be 64 years old next month and I have lost over 40 lbs. since March. My weight loss is a real challenge for me since I also have osteoarthritis from head to toe and fibromyalgia with it. Bone-on-bone arthritis keeps me from walking for exercise but I can use an exercise bike and have found several strength exercises safe for me. It IS a challenge, but we CAN do it!

ANother reason it's easier at 18, and not now:

50 years of habits!!!!

Age is a challenge, not a fence. Keep up the good work!

Happy New Year Coolinjeans, Yes you are right. But it is harder for a person over fifty because we become more complacent and do not want to exert ourself to do exercises.
I am sixty years old. Also have hypothyroidism. The Spartpeople.com site has help me a whole lot. I was 214 when I started with Spartpeople in October I am now 185. I watch what I eat and I excersie every day. I might walk three miles, bike for about two hours, lift weights and arobic excerise every day.I also am taking my meds correctly. I mix my routine
up sometimes to make it more interesting. It takes a lot of motivation because my husband is watching TV while I am doing all this by myself.
I hope to lose another 15 lbs.
Keep up the good work.
Happy New Year.

The older gentleman on the BIGGEST LOSER this year is a testament to the fact that people over 50 can do it.........sure your metabolism slows down but there are ways to kick it up...I'm over 50 with hypothyroidism and I can run circles around the young ladies in the gym, I can out lift any of them with free weights and the machines....heck I've been told by the personal trainers that I'm an inspiration to them.
So :) *"old people"*:) don't let anyone tell you....you can't do it because your old, your metabolism is slow or whatever....'cause you sure can and be proud doing it...

I have a lot more focus and determination to lose than I did decades ago. I turned 50 this year and decided that I want to get it off once and for all - before I get any older.

It was much easier to do this at 18 than now, but now I am definitely battling more bad habits and it is harder to create new ones. Exercise is the key to losing weight when you get older, you need to build up a slow metabolism and regain the muscle we naturally lose as we age.

I have to agree that losing weight gets harder with each decade. SP is the first program that I've actually lost weight on and am not hungry. I'm 61.

Everything changes as we get older, but it is not impossible to loose weight! Younger people are generally more active and their metabolism works better. The older we get we have to battle other things like menopause and other health issues.

BUT, I like your attitude! Welcome to the group!! I like your id name too!

It is MUCH harder for older women to lose weight than younger. Our wisdom isn't a match for raging metabolism.

Is it easier for young people to lose weight or is it easier for us over 50....
I think creatures over 50 have the maturity and wisdom to make better choices in our eating and are more faithful in keeping with a program...
At this point we should know what works and what doesn't...
