MARY,
Welcome back. You know you are where you need to be and that you'll make it back to where you want to be. Give yourself space to get over the 10 lb shock.

JULIANN,
Houston? Love it, really? Ha. 32 summers ago I visited my brother when he lived there. The weather was like here at it's worst, and the city didn't exist from what I could tell. Have they put any zoning laws for building in place since I've been there? A house could be next to a tire business on one side of it and who knows what on the other. There was no zoning to separate neighborhoods and commercial areas. Tell me that my ancient impression is antiquated by now. I want to be wrong!

BONNIE,
This afternoon my computer wouldn't function for me again, for a few hours. It is so frustrating! Tonight it is behaving sanely once again. I couldn't write to anyone. That darn cursor would just spin and make no connections for me. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I have to return here with the rest of my post because I thought I cut it out to put here but nothing is pasting. I'll be back. Dale

WAIT ! emoticon MORE IMPORTANT THAN the rest of my post to you all. emoticon

I'M CLOSING THIS THREAD OUT. emoticon

Go to: JULY, AUG, SEPT (is the name of our next thread.) SEE YOU THERE!

Hello emoticon s.,

It is an absolutely beautiful day here in the Midwest. It is about 80 degrees which sounds a little warm but there is a nice breeze so it is very nice.

My husband and I went out for lunch with some friends from Las Vegas who are visiting the town we all grew up in. emoticon We traveled 40 miles and they traveled 20 miles so we could meet. We enjoyed our lunch as well as the visit. Always wonderful seeing friends we don't get to see too often. We will see them again on the 4th.

Tammy - Just to inform you, I have a rare auto-immune disease of the skin in which there is no cure. I tried every drug there is known for it. Some of them did not help and the ones that did effected my kidneys and liver therefore I had to stop taking them. I now have to get IVIG an IV called Interveneous Immune Globulin every six weeks. I go for four days in a row for four hours each day. I will have to do this the rest of my life as it is the only thing that keeps my skin under control. When it gets out of control the itch just about drives me crazy. One of the side effects is a migraine in which I had the start of one every day for almost a week. It was not a very fun week. Thanks for the concern!

Michele - I hope all your Dr. appointments went well and you received great news from them all.

Sunny - emoticon I agree, taking your scale on your trip is a wonderful idea if you are traveling by car. emoticon Probably won't work if traveling by plane.

emoticon I hope all of you have a great 4th of July and are able to spend it with family and/or friends.

emoticon sparkfriends,
Talk to you all again soon.

Hello emoticon 's, My computer has been down 3 days. We couldn't get an internet connection. Turns out it was a problem with the phone cord to my HB's computer. I'll tell you what, it takes a long time to enter 3 days on the food tracker. emoticon but it is all better now.

Bonnie...I have also been having trouble with the spark pages. I will, for example, be working on my food tracker and when you enter something the page is supposed to go back to where you were when it is done adding to your list. Instead it may go to a blank page and give me the message "web page has expired, please retry". What's up with that? It is very random where and when it will do it. emoticon

Pam... I hope you are feeling better. With any luck what they are doing will do whatever it is supposed to do and you won't need to keep doing it. emoticon

Brenda...You are smart not to let your friend go alone to meet someone from CL. The couple of times I have bought something from CL, if my HB wasn't able to go with me I insisted on meeting in a public place. If they won't...I don't buy it. emoticon

Dale...I have taken Statins for a few years now. I have not had any problems. The problems that I have been told to watch for are sore, tired, aching muscles. Kind of all over muscle pain when you didn't do anything like exercising to cause it. I would definitely ask your Dr. about what you are experiencing. emoticon

Michele...Sounds like you had a busy day. I hope all your Drs. appointments went well. All that running around should count as exercise, right? I was washing walls and scrubbing floors today. It was a 2 hour workout, my hair was soaked with sweat by the time I was done. I am going to check in the fitness tracker to see if I can use it for exercise. emoticon

Sunny...Taking your scale with you is a good idea...it just sounds funny...not what you would typically take on a trip. emoticon

Julianne... emoticon I have only been a part of SP for a month but I love it. I wish you the best on your journey. emoticon

Mary... emoticon back. I have never kept a food journal and never thought I would like to. But...it is the easiest thing to do the way they have it set up. I make a game out of it to see if I can stay in the calorie counts and such. emoticon

Well that is about it for today. Tomorrow maybe the sun will come out and the rain will STOP. emoticon My dogs don't even want to go out in this. emoticon

Be well my friends. emoticon

Tammy,

together we can do this.

Mary, You need us!
I have a bag of Chips and allow myself a handful once or twice a week. They are spicy and have less salt then the other chips. Try to find a healthier version of what your son buys. Make sure you have lots of healthy things around to grab when you want something -- nuts are healthy and tasty too.

Glad you are back, sorry it's because you gained weight. Sammi emoticon

Hello everyone.
I haven't posted in a really long time. I got on the scale today, and I have gained 10 pounds since the beginning of the year. i had been hoping to have gone the other way, but I have a lot on my mind, and I guess I've not tracked my food, so it's so easy to take in more calories than you realize. I also have been eating a handful here and there, of my son's gluten free sweet potato chips. I have such a craving these days, for something crunchy.
I started journaling this morning, and am very hungry right now. That tells me that I have been taking in a lot more calories than I thought lately, and my body is telling me so.
I did so much better when I checked in to the sparkpeople posts. I'm making two resolutions today: to write down every thing I eat, and to read the sparkteam messages.

Dale, great that you are almost to goal! I do hope you are feeling better!

Sammi, hope those 2 lbs come off quickly for you!

I am off to 3 drs today: the GYN for my Vit. D meds, the eye dr. b/c of last year's cataract surgery (hopefully this will be my last appt) & then my back dr. I must check in with him regularly---once in 3 months. I will be so busy walking around Tokyo to get to all of these drs in the heat today! Not aerobic walking, but A LOT! of moving! emoticon

Try reading this one time a day and see if it's as effective for you as it's been for me:

Whatever comes up,
make your first thought
"WHAT WOULD I DO IF I KNEW I COULD NOT FAIL?"

SUNNY, good for you taking your scale along! I've done that, too. Hope your vacation pleases you in every way.

Of course it WAS my doctor who insisted I needed simvastatin. She's oblivious to drug side effects, which is why I've just CHANGED doctors this year. I can look up the info online about statin's potential side effects just as easily as ask my new Doc. I'm not scheduled to see him until August 5th.

And that hand shaking happened a couple of times within one week. Believe me, if it reoccurs I will call the doctor. I've simply quit taking the pill now even though I doubt that it relates to the statin.

After our mtg last night Scott and I had a really scrumptious salad at Jason's Deli. It was a first time at a salad bar where they also had different nuts to sprinkle on for protein. How wonderful for a vegan! I personally took advantage of it, too.

My son and his girlfriend came out after that to visit and watch a couple of series starting back up on Showtime and HBO. Nate stayed overnight (while Mary returned to the city) so he could get the blood work done finally for a month old doctor's examination.

He offered to drive my car back to his shop because he feels my brakes might need pads and the car might need an alignment. He wants to check the car out thoroughly for me. This is a first for me, to have my son work on my car at MOTORSHED.

Mary's birthday is on July 4th so I'm trying to arrange to bring Mom and 11 year old Jasmine with me to visit them downtown sometime during the week.

I forgot to sync my tracker last night until it was 10 minutes too late, past midnight. Oh well.
I better take a nap. I slept very poorly last night thinking I had to wake at 7 for Nate. We had more time to visit together this morning. It feels SO GOOD to embrace him; he's a great hugger.

Happy July 1st Sparklers! emoticon

I have picked up two pounds since I haven't been walking. Not happy. Will try to add at least one day of walking back into my schedule. I thought adding the gym two days along with the yoga two days would be enough.

Dale, they put my hubby on statins, but they made him feel awful --- he just can't take any of them. If you read some of the side effects you'll be hesitant to take them.

Dale,
I have been on a statin for probably at least a couple of years. I take Simvistatin 5mg nightly and my husband takes 20mg nightly and we have not have any problems. What dose do you take? I believe you should call the doctor's office or go in to see him or her to find out if that is a side effect or to find out what could be causing the problem.
Your friend,

Dale,

I don't take any meds. Your hand waving is odd. I would ask your doctor. How often does it happen?

I just got back from Safeway. Boy is it hot out there! I had a coupon for $5 off a $20 purchase expiring today, then I found a $5 Safeway gift card in my wallet so saved $10 there. Cool. Plus I used my debit card because I have to use it five times before the 1st or my bank will charge me a $5 service fee. Now I will pay my Comcast bill and that will be the 5th transaction this month. I usually use my debit card about ten times a month but buying my laptop drained my checking account so I have been frugal. Nothing I hate more than paying fees.

Dale, no, I do not take cholesterol lowering drugs. Is there any way that you can ask your Dr. or look online for the side effects of the drug? I would be curious myself.

Brenda, as always, you are such a good friend to the other residents around you! Good fo you for checking the calorie content of that ice cream----I overate yesterday, & I am up a5 lbs! A first for me! Now I am sure it will take all of July to undo the damage from the cookies & a big chocolate bar I ate yesterday!

Welcome Julianne. We have a lot of great support here. My mom (81) also had hip surgery, knee surgery. I am similar to her, so I imagine down the road somewhere I will be having such surgery. Tell me more about yoursefl---where are you from? Do you have any family?

Today, Monday, is my last pool day for the summer; the pool is closed to free swimming over the summer months as they have classes for the elderly. I will be doing a lot !! of early morning walking (4 a.m. ) for the rest of this summer!

Late afternoon here. I don't know when I last posted.

I have a Question:

Has anyone been taking a statin medicine for their cholesterol? It can possibly do permanent muscle damage. Well, I have for a few years now, (simvastatin,) and I'm wondering if the periodic convulsions I get, of my hand rapidly waving in the air (like a huge tick or twitch), could be connected to that drug. I doubt that my problem is muscular though.

It's a gorgeous weekend. I have had my windows wide open day and night for the last two days. Maria down the hall was in the office complaining that she couldn't open her living room window so I went down and showed her how to open it. Mine is the same way. She was afraid that she would break it. They just fit tight.

Sam called me at 7 last night and wanted me to go with her to meet a woman to sell her some of her daughter's clothing she advertised on Craig's list. I have told her enough horror stories I have heard about crazy people that she was leery to go alone. We met her in the parking lot at the local grocery store. Then Sam took me to Dairy Queen for ice cream. I had a medium chocolate dipped cone. Me being curious about the calorie count, when I got home I checked the tracker and it was 490 calories! Wow! I'm glad I hadn't had dinner yet so I just had a bowl of spinach and a boiled egg and it didn't hurt me. I even lost a pound yesterday.

Today it is supposed to get to the 90's so I plan on eating cold food: salads, cottage cheese and fruit and lots of water.

Pam,

I hope you are feeling better today.

Hi emoticon s,

I have not been in contact the last few days as I have not been feeling very well. After I have my IV's I had the start of a migraine every day. I used my tens unit every day, took my Excedrin migraine and went to bed between 9:00 and 9:30p.m. every night. emoticon
This Is one of the side effects. Sometimes I do ok but not at all this time. So far I feel good this morning and I hope and pray I stay this way.

I watched Dr. Charles Stanley for my Sunday sermon this morning. He had men who served in the armed services to give their testimonies. It was very good. No, freedom is not free. I thank God every day for these brave men and women.

It is a beautiful and cool morning here this morning. We have our windows open and it is just wonderful. We are suppose to have a nice week here this week, upper 70's and low 80's.

I hope all of you have a wonderful Sunday.

Talk to you all again soon.

Hi ALL

I have me new computer. It took a it to get everything plugged in properly. I have my tower inside of a computer armoire, and my modem and wi fi inside of another small cabinet. It was a bit difficult to get to it all, but I am good now. It is so nice to have all of that stuff out of sight.

Had a couple of errands to run today, and now am home and tired after all of this stuff.

Have a great weekend my friends. I will be back probably tomorrow

I can see clearly now the rain has gone! emoticon

The rain has finally stopped for a while and now it is 90 outside, Much more normal for this time of year. I get up earlier and earlier when it get this hot to take my walk. Then I stay in the air conditioning as much as possible.

I want to wish everyone a pleasant weekend.

Anyone can go online to purchase literature from a 12 step fellowship. The meditation books they have are soothing and insightful, too. ALANON helps with difficult relationships, period!
It doesn't really matter what the symptoms of those difficulties are, because you can apply the principles of the program to any situation.

I am an ongoing participant in NicA (nicotine anonymous) but have experienced many of the other 12 step programs over the years. As a former Therapist, besides being committed to keep growing personally, I believed that I needed to learn about all of them in order to be really helpful to my clients.

Fiona I am sending prayers your way for some heat. Do you have snow where you are?

Brenda, your BBQ sounds like a lot of fun. I miss those kinds of get togethers in the U.S. WE do our own BBQ here at home to celelbrate, but it's not quite the same. You are also such a good friend to your neighbors! Good for you! I hope others will reciprocate back to you one day when you need them.

Sunny enjoy your weekeend.

My tone chime jamboree was rather fun today. I love to listen to the other groups playing songs. They are so interesting!

Have a good weekend, fellow SP friends!

I believe in global warming. We are in oregon in June and it is going to very hot tomorrow. A little early for these temperatures.

Making mostly good food choices but chocolate and cheese are problems. We are eating light for lunch and cooking dinner. Vacations are fun

We are having a BBQ here 4th of July at 1 pm. Residents here like to eat dinner early. John down the hall will man the grill and I will be in the kitchen setting things up. I will have lots of help. Wednesday we are going shopping for the hamburger, ribs and veggies. Faith is going to help me make the patties. I don't like the frozen ones. We get the meat at the butcher shop. The rest of the meal will be potluck and a many have signed up to come and what they are bringing.

Today is supposed the be the last rainy day and the sun will come out and bake us. I plan to stay inside by the air conditioner.

This morning my neighbor needed a ride to the doctors office so I took her. She is 94. If she was mobile we could have walked there because it is only 6 blocks away. While I was waiting for her I filled out the paperwork to have my medical records sent there. My doctor is 10 miles away and I don't like driving out there. Gas is too expensive. If my 21 year old Jeep breaks down I have no way to get there because the bus doesn't go there. it runs like a top with 198,000 miles on it.

Have a good weekend everyone. I plan to.

Its been wet enough and the snow has been 2 metes thick in the south Island thicker than it has been in over 50 years or so so we could just do with some warmer finer days for a bit.

Bonnie thank you for the encouragement. Without all of you, I would definitely go crazy!

How was your visit with Gloria?

Fiona, I am wishing some warm weather for you! Would you like some of our rain?

Tammy, thank you as always! You have been a big help to me, too! How was your daughter's bike race? HOw I would love to do something like that. Here in Japan, we use our bikes for transportation more than recreation. I will be riding my bike to the train station (about 10 min) to take the train to the tone chime jamboree, as it is called. I am on my way out the door with my DD Annie to have a coffee at Starbuck's. What a treat. I can't wait! Then onto playing the tone chimes!

Enjoy your weekend, all! emoticon

Hi all

I have skimmed the posts, but am so far behind that I am just going to say God Bless go all of you.

I finally took my desk top to the PC store. A long story, but they are putting all of my stuff on a new computer that they built themselves. Money I did not want to spend, but I really need my desktop. Am not crazy about this laptop.

Hopefully will have it back tomorrow some time.

My sister in law Gloria is coming here for two weeks on Sunday, so I will be pretty busy. Will be trying to get on here much more often, but summer is a busy time for me.

WIshing you all well. God Bless

Hello emoticon 's, 2 lbs gone this week.
emoticon July 4 is just around the corner. Without family close by we don't do a lot but if my husband doesn't have to work we go to see fireworks. I hope she does well and I think she will, she is the type of person who is very determined when she sets her mind to it. emoticon

Sunny hope you are having a good time! Remember to make good food choices. Just for today!

Tammi, thank you so much in regards to the advice about my DH Tad. I feel better b/c of all of you helping me. I have been on SP since '09 I think it is, & this is not the 1st time I have had to open up about him. The idea of being "powerless" over another's behavior is so true. Why didn't I think of it myself?!

It is b/c of all of you that I can keep going Thank you dear friends!

I had a good piano lesson today. emoticon

Tomorrow in Tokyo is the annual tone chiime jamboree: different tone chime groups from all over Japan get together at a Lutheran church & each group plays 2 songs of their choice. It will go on from about 1-5 pm so it is going to be a long afternoon. Since this event is right near Annie Rose's (my DD who is 20) college, she & I are going to get together beforehand & go to Starbuck's together emoticon . I rarely go to Starbuck's except for the occasional treat!

Have a good weekend, dear SP friends! emoticon

Hello emoticon Spark friends, The storms didn't start here until around 6:30. I hope the power stays on while I am on the computer. Busy day today, I had to go out to the store again. I sure use the vegetables fast now that I am eating healthy emoticon It was very hot when I went to the store but now that the storm is here it dropped down to 75. I don't like any extreme in the temputure, not too hot-not too cold-just right for me is in the 70's. emoticon

Michele... I hope you always feel comfortable unloading to us, believe me I won't hesitate if I feel the need. I guess the good part of my husband staying upstairs most of the time is that we almost never fight. We fought a lot more when we were younger and he had a drinking problem. He has been sober for years and with the kids grown and out of the house we don't have much to fight about now. emoticon
When my mother used to go to Over eaters Anonymous (OA instead of AA) they used the same 12 step book as they did in AA. I don't remember all the steps but I think the first one is admitting to yourself you are powerless over (alcohol, food or whatever is controlling your life). I remember her keeping a journal, having to forgive herself, make amends to whoever she might have hurt and trust in a higher power. It was a long time ago and that is about all I can remember.
It surprises me that a country that is so advanced technalogically doesn't understand the importance of dental health to your overall health.
I don't buy or cook any processed food for Bill. Long before I started to eat healthy I told him I would not do it and help him kill himself. Even when the kids were small I would make dinner and he wouldn't eat it, he would make hot dogs or fish sticks so I quit cooking for him. It sounds strange but it works for us. emoticon Of course if we splurge and buy steaks he will eat that if I cook it. emoticon I have always eaten fairly healthy, just too much of it. and of course too many snacks in the evening, Now I am learning portion control and I stay away from sugar.

Pam... I hope that there in nothing seriously wrong and I hope you feel better soon. emoticon We like to give blood every couple of months and it is always freezing. I think it is because of working with blood products. I have learned to take a blanket with me. emoticon

Brenda...Enjoy your new refrigerator. emoticon

Dale & Sammi, you have both just save my sanity!!! emoticon and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart!

To answer your question about support groups; no there are not a lot of support groups in this country. Japan is far behind the U.S. in that area. There are definitely no wt loss support groups, let alone stress management groups.

Dale do you think you could gve me a hint about some of those "12 steps"? I have heard of them in AA meetings, but not being related to an Alcoholic or having a problem with it myself, I really don't know much about it.

Sammi, this latest dilemna started last week Tuesday, when I reminded my husband Tad that he was drinking too many sugary drinks, He immediately became ornary & obstinate & dumped it along with whatever treat he was eating into the garbage. He then went on to say that he will PROVE that he doesn't NEED such things anymore & will not eat such things ever again. He has been this way for the last week and a half (it is Thursday morning here) & now his latest complaint is that he doesn't like the way I cook, that I don'T have any "good " food in our house anymore, that I catagorize food as being only "good or bad" (not true) I lost my temper with him on Tuesday.

I have been proud of myself that for nearly a whole year I haven't lost my temper with him. BUt as Bonnie had said recently, men are mean & selfish, & Tad seems to fit that catagory recently. I should have just walked away from him as I usually do. Why oh why didn't I do that this past week? I could just kick myself for being sucked into one of his moods.

But to be fair to Tad, he wasn'T always like this. He used to be more considerate & nice. More positve & logical about life. Now he just seems to be a big baby boy. I suppose again in fairness to him, he is under a lot of stress running the family plumbing business, taking care of our college kids & his father who has dementia.

Again thank you all for listening.

Dale, I'm glad you are enjoying your performances! Keep me posted to as what you are seeing---how interested I am!

Pam, you are probably right about the meds. making you gain the wt. Will you be on these current meds for long? If not, maybe the wt, will come off after that?

Brenda how is your new fridge? How exciting! I was thrilled when we got our new refrigerator about 3 years ago!

Today is piano & tone chime lessons, SOrry that this post was so long. Enjoy your day, fellow SP friends! emoticon

Dale,

I didn't know I was getting a new refrigerator until Monday afternoon when Sam drug me into the manager's office to tell her my ref freezes veggies on the bottom shelf so she called the appliance store and they had one in stock. John came over a little while ago and reversed the door with a little help from me. I didn't like it opening into the hallway and I didn't have time to wait while the delivery guy changed it for me because I had to go pick up John from the hospital. Now I am a happy camper. One of these days I will get a new range. Six people got them last year so when they release the funds, others will get one. They are replacing all the stoves because they are 17 years old. My stove works perfectly. This is your federal government at work.

We had a lot of rain again today but will get downright hot over the weekend. I like it to stay around 70.

The performances you usher for sounds like a lot of fun.

BRENDA,
I didn't know you were getting a new fridge. I need one but since mine still works, just deal with it's restrictions.

MICHELE and SAMMI,
Men are often babies. which is why they need women emoticon ...and you thought it was the sex. emoticon I have heard the story over and over again about how defiantly they react to what's good for them (perhaps just because it comes from their wives). But mainly I think it's just a childish need to 'have what I want cause I want it!' You are so better off letting go of what is good for them and just concentrate on what you can do for yourselves.

I know for me there comes a crossroad of confusion because we did have the responsibility to do what was best for our kids, so how can we just disconnect with our husband? The 12 step way really teaches how! And MICHELE, you must cry on our shoulder in writing. It's the best we can offer you so try not to feel embarrassed about it. But I'm wondering why there aren't support groups locally for women to gather and work through life with? We all need girlfriends in our "real" lives. Otherwise, we turn it inward onto ourselves.

Meanwhile, back in Maryland... Last night's performance was just okay, not really all that good. Tonight I opened up my schedule in order to go take Mom to D.C. to my cousin's house, now to be referred to as Monique's house, for a typical group dinner gathering she often hosts. Other than tonight, I'm at a performance each night of this week! It's really a special opportunity to usher through this series.

I'm hiding from the heat, too chicken to even go food shopping. Roast on my way and freeze in the store then melt down carrying it all inside sounds like a form of torture. My parking spot is not close at all to my front door. But with that said, it's time to take Oliver around the block at least.

No matter what our local weather forecasts are: It's a good day overall,
Dale

Pam, you are so right -- hubby will grab a hand full of pretzels or a piece of chocolate cake and ask me if I'd like some. Usually I will have a bite, but I try to stay away from his treats and stick with mine. I try to do the healthy treats. It is harder now that he is back to his old habits.

Hope you're warm now --- take care, Sammi emoticon

Hi emoticon s,

I am at the hospital having my IV. It is freezing in here. Yesterday I had three blankets on. I am disappointed because I have been eating right but am gaining weight. I am on 40mg of prednisone for a week because of the IV. It helps with the side effects of the drug. I am pretty sure that is why I have gained emoticon

Michelle and Sammi - It is hard to eat right when you have family members who do not care what they put in their body. I lost some weight while my husband was in Washington and when I told him he said it was probably because he was not there to tempt me with the stuff that I should not be eating. Although he too wants to lose some weight the temptations are not always easy to stay away from.

It is extremely hot here and very humid. It should be nicer starting tomorrow.

I hope all of my emoticon s have an awesome day!
Talk to all of you again soon.

Michele,

My hubby is starting to go back to his old eating habits --- I buy low sodium everything and only buy a few things in cans. He has started putting salt on his food again, eating too many sweets in the evening and larger portions. I reminded him today he is supposed to eat smaller meals and more often. I got the I feel good routine and as I felt I was talking to the wall I stopped. I have to remind myself it is his life and he should live it the way he wants. It isn't what I want or think.

May you live as long as you want to and want to as long as you live, Blessings, Sammi

Pam glad your new computer is working for you. I am also using a new computer, & compared to my old desktop this one is just a miracle!

Sammi, Brenda & Tammy thank you for the support. IT is hard to live with DH when he is in a mood,l & that seems like a lot recently. I took a lot of the processed foods out of the house, & now,he wants to go back to eating all of those awful foods. He already has high bl. pressure. He had gum disease about 10 years ago, mainly I think b/c Japanese people in general don'T take care of their teeth. Not only does he want all of that "bad" food, he says (like a littlle boy) that he no longer wil go to the dentist regularly. He told me this a.m. that all I think about is "living longer" which is not true at all. I want to live HEALTHIER for whatever time I have left, so I can make more choices about the direction of my life.

Thank you all for listening. If I don't at least talk about this, I will go absolutely crazy!
We are having our "liquid sunshine" today. I am off to practice my piano, & then do some yoga.

Hello emoticon s,
I got my laptop back today after having it sent in to the company to have my screen replaced.
emoticon I don't have to use the OLD desk top any more that hardly works.

We also have been having rain and thunderstorms here. We are suppose to get some more tonight as far as I understand. It was in the 90's here today and will be in the 90's tomorrow. It will then be in the low 80's for about five days. That will be nice.

We had company from Friday until early Monday morning. We had a wonderful time with a couple of wonderful friends. That is why I have not been able to get on to communicate with all of you.

I started getting my IV's yesterday and will have one every day through Thursday. I have a very sore neck from it. I sometimes get a migraine from it so I am trying to take care of it by using my TENS unit. I do get to eat my lunch at the hospital since I am there through the lunch hour. Today I had a cup of minestrone soup, a fruit plate with cottage cheese, a mini cinnamon roll which I took the frosting off of, and a cup of plain hot tea. The fruit was really good.

I hope all of you have a good rest of the evening and a great day tomorrow.
Take care my spark friends,
Pam emoticon

It was a dark and stormy day today. Thunder, lightening, heavy rain and wind all around us but not right here in the valley. A few trees blew over in Olympia and stopped traffic for a time. It is really muggy out. This weekend it will be in the 80's. Crazy weather these days.

My neighbor John went to Out Patient Surgery on the bus this morning to have his kidney stones blasted. I picked him up after he woke up. He was so funny. We stopped at the drug store to fill a couple prescriptions and he had the pharmacists in stitches as well as an old couple waiting for their meds. I got him home and told him to take one of his pain pills and lay down and to take another one at 7. Plus not to turn on his stove. I doubt he will remember any of it.

I got my new refrigerator this morning and it has more room inside and is a little shorter. I could have had a bigger one if I had hardwood floors. The carpet gets in the way for anything wider. John said he will reverse the door for me because it opens on the hall side, very inconvienient.

Michele,

I hope your husband come out of his funk soon. Not fun to live with a grouch. Been there, done that so I know how you feel.

We are planning our 4th of July BBQ. John and I are picking up the hamburger and ribs, corn on the cob, slicing tomatoes and buns. Faith said we can get lettuce out of the gardens so that will save a little bit. She is going to help me make the patties and slice the tomatoes. The rest of the BBQ is potluck. People are signing up all ready so we will have a big crowd. We did it last year and I never got a hamburger because we ran out. This time I am making 3 oz burgers instead of 4 oz so they won't be so big. John will be manning the grill. There will be a lot of food. Our patio is covered so if it rains it won't matter. Here it usually rains sometime during the day of the 4th.

TTY'all later.

Michele, I so understand where you are coming from --- some days I just try to stay busy or run a lot of errands by myself. They do get moody and all of a sudden you feel like you have a child around rather then another adult. Sometimes you just have to let the lid come off. Hope you have a better day.

Take care, Sammi

emoticon Hi everyone, I hope all is well with you all. I am doing good today. I got up early to take my walk. I love walking in the new day. There is not much traffic, the birds are singing and it is cool. I'm still hot and sweaty when I am done but that's ok. I don't do as much distance as a lot of you (1 1/2 miles) but there are 3 big hills on the route. I am huffing and puffing by the time I get to the top. I would love to find a safe place to walk that is flatter and not 50 miles away, but this is NC, and there are not that many flat roads. emoticon

Michele...I too have been trying to stay away from processed foods. I buy fresh when possible or frozen vegetables so they don't go bad. I do my main shopping once a month and if I buy too much fresh, it goes bad. I have to learn to buy in smaller amounts and go to the store a little more often. I no longer drink dairy milk I drink almond milk. It has fewer calories than even skim milk and more calcium.
my husbands eating habits are terrible but in his favor is the amount of water he drinks, probably 12-15 glasses, will help to flush out the salt. He also quit smoking about 3 years ago. I told him that was the best thing he could have done for both of us. He went in for an outpatient surgery and the anastegologist told him his lungs sounded so bad they might have to keep him until his oxygen levels were high enough. He was fine but it really scared him, enough to quit after 30 years. emoticon emoticon

Sammi...My husband and I love to watch lightning storms. emoticon We started when we were dating, we would go out under the awning of his parents house and sit and watch the show. We don't do it so much any more, I guess life gets in the way. emoticon

Dale...The best way for me to eat steamed vegetables is to top them with fresh, low salt salsa. Used to be the only way I would eat them was with lots of salt and/or butter, and I wasn't stingy with the butter. The salsa adds some spice and flavor without the salt and I like it so I will eat it. That is one of the hardest changes I have to make, not adding salt to everything. Herbs and spices help a lot. I also extend my Italian dressing with salsa. I like a lot a flavor on my salad and when I add the salsa I don't miss all the extra dressing I used to use. emoticon

I can't believe how much time I spend on the computer now. Not that it's bad, I do get up and walk around, take the dogs out or go get the mail so I'm not sitting the whole time. It isn't any worse than sitting on the couch in front of the tv. It is better for my brain also. emoticon

Be well my friends. emoticon

Dale you are so right about the choices we make daily. I am doing that & the wt. is either coming off or staying the same. I am not gaining. Your performances sound so wonderful!

Sammi, I miss those kinds of thunderstorms. The ones here in Japan are rather wimpy compared to the ones in Michigan!

I was bad yesterday---lost my temper with my DH; he is so negative, grumpy. I just had had enough of his negative "air" Makes me wish I was not married at all. I feel like it is really hard to keep my head above water right now. I wish we could all meet in a group like I used to with the TOPS group that used to be here in Tokyo so that I could hve a good cry on someone's shoulder. Okay, enough of feeling sorry for myself. I am really fine. I am a survivor, & today, Wednesday, despite the rain that is coming & the humidity that is here, will be a GOOD day for me!

Thank you all for listening. Bye for now.

Hello gang. I'm glad to see everyone here doing their best. For lunch, I finished off the roasted vegetables and linguini I had left over. Last night I wasn't too hungry so I had a wonderful apple with raw peanut butter on each bite that quite satisfied me. Later I snacked on some raisins and soy nuts that I mixed together.

It seems to me that the key to all of this healthy eating lifestyle is just to make our next choice one that is good for us. It's a permanent refocusing opportunity. We do get better at staying on track but like ANNE said, no one does it perfectly. I have plenty of variety to eat (I'd be bored, too if I didn't) and there's always the new and different ways of eating the same ingredients as well.

I choose to steam a vegetable and eat it all as a snack on some days. I have plenty of different proteins to select from, and those pieces of fruit every day have become real treats that I crave. Our taste buds and our appetites adjust.

Meanwhile, yesterday at 7pm it was much more pleasant out than I expected, so I went around Wilde Lake with a neighbor (and her 3 year old daughter). Unfortunately, we have two families, each with a 3 year old girl, who are about to move out of our complex. We will definitely miss these girls! They give us so much pleasure.

Tonight is another performance where I'll usher. It will also be a very high energy show.

I worked on Sharon's dresser yesterday to see if the stain was indeed dried paper stuck on. I got most all of it off, and think that there's just one spot that seems to have slight damage to the shellac. I hope even that isn't permanent. It's like having a kid in the house and worrying that they're going to ruin something just because they're a kid...

Speaking of kids, Jasmine is supposed to come spend next week with me.

I hope it comes to be, because the last time I'm going to see Sharon next week will be when she leaves for work on Wednesday. From then on she'll be out of town for the rest of the week, including the weekend. I talked to Sharon last night about how her not liking children is really felt by Jasmine, and to make an effort to give her a better impression. Sharon's very insecure about her English and about how one relates to children. Geesh. She copes with these discomforts by avoiding contact, which is very rejecting.

Bye for now,
Dale

Good Morning Sparklers! We had a lovely, loud and flashy thunderstorm last night. It rumbled and the lightening was beautiful and scary at the same time. Lasted a few hours, rained off and on. Love the storms without the damaging winds. All my plants looked happy this morning.

Went to the gym yesterday with hubby, did the treadmill instead of the bike --- 30 minutes. Then a few pieces of equipment. It's so humid here, if you don't get to the gym early in the day it gets too warm inside and I cannot exercise if it's not cool. I enjoy my walking more then the gym and hope to be back to walking next week.

Sounds like everyone is dropping the weight --- can almost hear the thud. emoticon
Keep up the good work Spark Friends. Blessings, Sammi

Tammy I have days like that a lot! Until recently, I had an old computer & it froze so much. This computer that I am using is only about 2 months old. The screen is bigger,so it's easier for me to see since I had my cataract surgery a year ago.
The way your husband is eating---unbelievable! I have been throwing out & have stopped using most processed foods. I do have lowfat milk in the house, but almost everything else is fruit & vegges. Since I have eliminated most foods that i can snack on, I have dropped 4 kgs (about 10 lbs ) real easily. I also track my food daily.

Sunny emoticon , I also congratulate you on your small loss! Keep going just for today!

Brenda, I also agree with you ---mind over matter. People also think that I am a little bit strange because I try to eat really healthy, while they are eating all of this processed food. Although I am only 52, I am hoping as I get older, that I will still be healthy in the future!
our weather is also like yours---the rain stops & starts. It is bleak & dreary out but I know the sun will come back. How was the wedding?

Bonnie, hope you are enjoying your pool today! Is it still hot?

Dale, the way you are eating is the way I have started to eat. Now the wt. is finally falling off! emoticon

Did you ever have one of those days?

First, I kept forgetting to change the meal on the food tracker. Then I had to go back, one by one and remove them from breakfast and put them on lunch. I had a whole list I had saved from favorites.

Then, I wrote out my messages for today and my computer froze and I lost the whole page.

So, I am just going to wish you all a great day.

Be well my friends. emoticon

My husband eats healthy because he has several autoimmune diseases and I cook for him every day. His father died right after he retired, so DH is committed to staying around a little longer.

I track my weight on a blank graph that I print out and keep next to the scale. I noticed this the first time I did WW, I can go for 10-20 days and not lose a pound and then the scale number will drop 2 pounds. Keeping a printed sheet in front of me helps my motivation because I can look back and see the downward trend. I can also see the upward trend especially during the holidays.

Off for a few days, may not have time to write.

My friend Sam got elected to prepare all the fresh fruit for her granddaughter's wedding this afternoon in a park. Thankfully they thought to put up some canope's because it's raining on and off today. I froze my freezer packs and dumped out my yarn that was in my big plastic tote and manufactured her a cooler to transport the fruit. It is about an 80 mile trip so at least it will all stay cool in the trunk of her car. I used to have a cooler but I gave it to a homeless man at the food bank and few years ago because he was living in his car. I never used it anymore so we both were happy.

I am eating smaller portions these days too, weighing and measuring everything. People here think I am weird but they are fat and I am not. They have many health issues and I don't. I am not blowing my own horn, it is just the facts.

Dale,

I hope your shorts don't fall off. Maybe you should wear a belt, just in case.

Yesterday Elinor and Mary stopped by and they were talking about sweets, how hard it is to resist them. Mary just had surgery to remove the lap band and had the stomach by pass surgery instead. She is still healing and happy that she has lost 12 pounds. Well, all she can eat right now is liquids and a bite or two of solids. She had the lap band for 9 months and never lost anything. She gained. Anyway she was saying that people put sweets on her plate. I told her 'that doesn't mean you have to eat them' and she just gave me the 'look'. She said 'well, you can ignore them, I can't'. As far as I'm concerned that is a cop out. I really doubt she will ever get thin. It is all mind over matter but if you don't mind, it doesn't matter.

Tammy,

I can't believe that your husband can eat that way. My husband never ate right, used a lot of salt, smoked and drank wine and coffee, very little water. Well, he had a massive stroke at age 61 and has been in assisted living for the last seven yeas. He doesn't even know me anymore. All you can do is to keep eating your healthy foods and maybe one day he might join you.

I have five children and never see or talk to any of them. One son and one daughter occasionally make a comment on my FB page. It's a long story.

Sunny,
emoticon emoticon losing two pounds. emoticon

Bonnie,

It's good to hear from you. You know we miss you when you don't post but I know how busy you are with the children and your pool. Just pop in when you have time.

It's raining again. I hope the wedding is over by now. Too bad it wasn't yesterday because it was really hot.

Have a good rest of the day.

Happy Sunday everyone. What crazy weather we are having. A couple of hours ago it was raining so hard I could hardly see across the street, and now the sun is out. emoticon The thunder chased my cats into hiding. emoticon

I am just getting started so that time is a ways off but I have hope that one day to fit even a 14.The last time I can remember being that small was when my kids were small. I also have a son that is to busy to call his mama. He says that it is my fault bc I moved out of state. He doesn't like to talk on the phone but he has fb and doesn't return my messages. He always apologises when I see him at Christmas. emoticon
I will tell you one of my husband favorite meals and you will know how bad it is. He takes one pkg of Lipton noodle soup (8 servings) and 1 pkg of Lipton extra noodle soup (6 servings). That is 670 mg. of sodium per serving and he eats 14. He only adds about 1/4 of the water he is supposed to then adds 7 cut up hot dogs at 660 mg. of salt per link. He eats this every weekend when he watches the car race. emoticon
I love living in the country, I don't think I would do well in the city any more. And yes, Dale, sometimes it is to much alone time. I am starting to get involved in a new church we have started going to and it helps a lot. emoticon

SUNNY,
Yay for your couple of pounds lost. Yay for your fresh, renewed commitment. Since I have motivated you, I'll offer other things you might choose to do.

The following practices have been very effective for me. First, I search out for the lowest calorie, healthy meal options on the menu and usually find at least two. If not and they are one of those restaurants who load up everything to be fattening, I ask to substitute instead of automatically accepting that typical side of fries or what have you. Restaurants are responding to more people asking for a steamed vegetable substitute.

Here are some other things that really work for me. I am eating slowly and taking small amounts, pausing between bites! This is now natural for me and really helps me know much more clearly when I have had enough. I'm the last to finish -- but I'm THE most satisfied.

The salad dressing is never mixed in when I order a salad for my meal, nor do I pour it on myself. I simply and lightly dip my fork tongs into the dressing and touch/wipe it onto my next bite. It really works wonders.

Don't see those restaurants as the enemy if you can help it. Ask for whatever modifications that will keep you on track. You can do this! I'm impressed and support your intention.

Dale

Being conscientious about logging all the food I eat, keeping my hand out of the dark chocolate and upping the amount I walk, the result is the scale is down 2 pounds. So as Dale suggested I am going to continue to eat light and watch the portions. Going to be getting together with family members and doing a little traveling over the next few weeks will be a challenge. But these are the events that really trip me up. But I am going to be logging in each day and plan a little more.

Have a great Sunday!

Sounds as though you all are doing pretty well.

Have spent time in the pool for the last 4 days, will be getting in in a little while.

Yesterday Scott had the kids and we played and had a good time.

It is hot here. We did have a good rain storm last night, we did need the rain.

I am loving this hot weather. I know it is not what other's enjoy, but with a pool, it makes me happy.

Went to the grocery store after having lunch with Nancy and Ned. I have seen Nancy twice now and am trying to establish a different kind of relationship. Hoping it will work. She leaves for Dallas in about a month.
Kroger had red raspberries on sale 4 for $5. Bought four, put two in the freezer and two in the frig. Will enjoy them. Good price, probably should have bought more.

MICHELE

Good to know that being here helps with your dh's moods. I have found much comfort and support here.

Right now I am having issues with my desktop computer so am using the laptop, and it is not as easy to type on, so I am not posting as much. I am also quite a bit busier at this time also.

Looking forward to having my SIL Gloria arrive on next Sunday. She is bringing her 10 year old niece. That is nice because he son and his family who live here will get to see her too.

They will be here for two weeks.

God Bless my friends, have a great rest of Sunday and a wonderful week

Good morning! Sunday means that tomorrow is my weekly weigh in. This week it's held steady, which is good.

NJ,
I adore my fitbit and have it synced with my computer and my iPhone so the daily records get posted for cumulative record keeping. Ask around and you'll find someone you know already uses one. (What's up with you this summer?)

MICHELE,
LOL. Silly. The warm ball in the sky is a sun, not a son. That's why I thought your never-in- touch-with-you child was finally coming to visit.

BRENDA,
My size 12 shorts sit so low on my hip now that if I lose my last 5 lbs, they'll fall off me. I'm trying to manage over the next two months so that I can pick up some size 8 (if I'm lucky) at the end of the season.

FIONA,
Burrr! I hope you have a better heating system than poor MICHELE does.

TAMMY,
I'd love having a second home that would give me such a serene setting, but I enjoy too much to be out there all the time. I get the same sense from you that it's just a little too much alone time.

It started to rain at 10:30a.m. This morning. I wonder how long it will last. Like yesterday, I have another quiet day today. I just visited with a couple of neighbors during the afternoon to fill the time, which was quite pleasant actually.

Then yesterday I LUCKED ĜUT. Oliver passed the tipping point and actually smelled. The second place I called had an immediate no show that I was able to fill. Sweet!!! He needed to get cleaned up. Now he looks all quaffed. And while he was being groomed, I met Scott for a dinner salad in a nearby restaurant. The timing for all this plus getting to the performance on time worked out exactly right.

Last night's performance wasn't my cup of tea. The audience enjoyed themselves with it though. The show had lots of slapstick and rhyming to it. Being in the back row, I was missing a lot of the lines they were saying. I joined Scott up front for the second half, where he had purchased a seat for himself last minute, and so I was able to hear the rest of it.

Dale

A fitbit is a little tracker that is very new on the market. Just go to Fitbit.com and you can find out all about them. I have the fitbit/zip and it is keeping me accountable.

BTW, it's good to have you stop by. Come back soon!

Fiona, I hope it warms up for you! We also have very cold winters here in Tokyo as there is no central heating like I grew up with in the U.S.

Brenda, b/c of your success, I too went out & bought the "Spark Solution" book. I have beentracking every bite that has been going into my mouth. I can now finally wear my skinny jeans a size 12. I can even fit into my 10s, tho. they are still a little tight. I am thrilled!

Mumsey,

I wish I could send you some of our heat. Today is the longest day of the year. Summer has finally arrived and hopefully the rains will go to the Midwest where they need some for their crops.

I am still maintaining and tracking most every bite. I fell off the wagon there a few days and felt the fat come back so now I am being diligent and behaving myself. I got a bag of really good Fugi apples today at the discount store. I have been out of them for about a week now. I try to eat one everyday and have been upping my fruits and raw vegggies.

Have a good day.
