I was happy to post to SparkPeople yesterday knowing (hopefully) this was going to do the job. However, I woke this a.m. with a terrible cold so diet will be hit or miss for the next couple of days. I should mention that I either threw out or gave away all the goodies in the house. Also bought a new scale as the old one seemed to be hit or miss. This one is 3 lbs lighter, which I'll take.

Being around overweight people makes me want to eat healthier. It is a real turn off for me watching people stuff themselves with gooey sweets and other unhealthy foods.

There is another method when around those obese people, you could be all smug about it: "I don't want to be one of *them* so I better turn thongs around."

One Day at a Time:
1) 10,000 steps daily
2) fruit & vegie at every meal and log
3) aerobic or strength train every day
4) 7 hours sleep daily
5) check in with SP daily

August 2014 goals:
1) Get my nutrition back under control and record daily
2) Finish the forest service quilt and wall hanging
3) Ride my bike 25 miles a week
4) Clean and de-clutter one room each week

Studies show that weight gain is contagious - that is, our family and friends will tend to gain if we do and the other way round also. When we all have too much to eat and do too little exercise the stigma is removed and we think of these actions as normal. Pat yourself on the back because as you get in better shape you are going to influence those around you to get in better shape also. Go you!

Yes, I agree that comparing to others who are much more overweight can make us complacent. And also, I've been dieting for years, losing and gaining the same weight again and again, so do know all the "rules" -- just have a hard time being consistent. This is how Sparkpeople is helping me. Welcome and good luck!

I think half my problem is that all around me I'm seeing really obese people. As a result I tell myself I'm not so bad. For medical reasons I have to lose at least 15 lbs. so I do have to change my attitude and stop looking at others, just myself in the mirror. I have a doctor's appt. in Feb. and would really like to surprise him with at least a few pounds loss. So here goes. I kind of know the rules. Just have to follow them.
