Dale,

I like living alone and am not looking for a meal out or companionship. The new guy is looking for a relationship. None of us are. He spouts religion all the time and that is not my bag. Religion is a personal thing as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, I think he is a creep and too weird.

Eating out is not something I enjoy. I only eat out about once a year and mostly I don't like the food. There's plenty of people here to talk to or not. We socialize down in the social room everyday and occassionally visit in our apartments but most of us don't have but a couple of chairs so there are plenty of areas here with nice chairs and couches.

When I first meet someone, I either like them or not and am always right on my feelings. I do give them the benefit of a doubt and try to like them and I usually can't. So I tolerate them. I will speak to them and be nice, help them if they need help but that's about it.

I keep busy crocheting and that is what I like to do. Currently I am making purses and selling them here in the complex. I was making a scarf and didn't like the way it was turning out so I made it into a purse. Then people started ordering them. Now I have a whole list of orders so I will be kept busy for quite some time. The pattern is in my head and some have asked me for it, but there isn't a hard copy and I am not going to try to write one. It's my design and I would just as soon keep it that way.

Enjoy the weekend. Thanks for your input.

Brenda,
I have to work even though it is Saturday and I am a volunteer. But regardless of my short opening in time here, I want you to realize that it doesn't much matter if someone new is male or female. If you don't like their personality or vibes, stay away. If they are okay to talk to or laugh with or even eat a meal out of the apartment, you are not making a commitment. (I'm just sayin')

Doing nothing to feel better actually hurts, doesn't it? Being alone is not equivalent to living in lonliness. Quality of friendship matters regardless of marital status or pairing off.

A sad story can be broken just for today. Crap, just get treated to a meal once a month and get out of that building. I dare you (wink). If he's a creep and you don't want a minute with him, ignore my shpiel here.

Dale

Dale,

I'm sorry to hear that you verified what your heart already knew. Lost loves are tragic. Many books and movies have been written/made on the subject. All my life I have waited for the knight on the white charger to appear. I believed all the fairytales I read when I was young and I finally found out there is no 'happily ever-after'. My growing up years were not happy ones and I buried myself in books and fanaticised. Now I know that life is all about choices and I now choose to live alone in this huge apartment complex among all the people who all have pretty much the same stories and situations. There's a new guy here who is trying to get women to go to breakfast with him but he is having no luck so far. I told him I'm a loner and prefer to be that way. He has no car so whoever he finds to go to breakfast will either have to drive him or walk with him. He is on oxygen 24/7, a retired truckdriver who said he is divorced but in fact is in the middle of one. Many of the women here cannot walk very far. I think he is finding out he is going to have to hang out with the men or his church group. We aren't interested. I did take him grocery shopping a few days ago.

My weight is not going down and I don't like all the lumps and dimples I see in the mirror but I am not doing anything about it at the moment as far as exercising. I'm making crocheted purses and keep getting more orders everyday. The purses take a few days to make so it is a slow process. Like weight loss. I do take a few walks around the halls everyday and watch what I eat. Choices.

Have a nice weekend everyone.

yeah, quality of life is the real goal now.

the man I most loved in my life (I've been with a string of men) died in 2006, I just verified.

I knew for awhile in my heart that he died because I always had this telepathic thing about him, and now it's official.

what I do know (because I just wrote out a couple emails to flush out my thoughts) is:

when I feel that challenging responsibilities are being piled on to what I already doubt I can do, I will fatten up.

yes I suppose it can be that simple

I know....I'll never, ever, ever see 110 again! I wouldn't even want to ! I'd just be bones covered in wrinkled, baggy skin....kind of like a thin elephant! I'd be happy with a weight where all my bloodwork is normal. That's what I'm working on.

okay, so the last time I posted here it was off topic and no one was interested in talking about movies or books, my bad.

size changes -- you gals have it right.
both QUALITY of product and time of product make sizing in our country nonsense.

and as far as getting 130 to look like it did last time...
I am finally giving up the fantasy that I can weigh 138 and be back to what that was then, cause my body is melting down and that skin just won't work the same, might as I want to deny it

So... I have stopped thinking I can live between 138-142. Now I will be grateful to even be 150 or under. The whole thing has been too unattainable to maintain with more time not at the right weight so get real and get to a goal I can get to.

I'm just sayin...

I don't know when the sizes changed but I have a lot of clothes that have been given to me and many varying sizes of jeans and pants. I can wear anything from an 8 to 12 and they all fit fine. It's crazy. I found that if the pants are very good quality they are an 8.

Hi, Everybody. I just had to get in on this discussion. First: I did take a picture of myself in bra and panties. My brave and non-judgmental cousin took the picture. Thank goodness for digital cameras! I would have never had THOSE pictures developed from film! Although it was not a pretty sight, it gave me an idea of how I really look. I could see the rolls of fat on my back and see how much my belly really does pooch out. Although I still haven't lost the weight....at least I know how I look now. And I have targeted those back boobs for extinction through some exercise.

And about sizes....about 4 years ago at age 51, I lost 35 lbs. and weighed 130 lbs. I bought some new pants in size 6. They fit. I was appalled. There was no way I should be wearing a size 6.

When I was 20 (35 years ago) and weighed 110, I was lucky to fit into a size 7 pant. I was always a size 9. I've been shopping at re-sale shops lately and picked up 2 lovely silk blouses, both are size 10. But, I'm pretty they must have been made in the 1990's because they just aren't all that big. I'm not sure when the sizes changed so drastically, but I know that about 10 years when I weighed 160, I bought a pair of size 10 pants. Isn't that crazy? No way was I a size 10 then.

Right now I weigh 155. I am 55 yoa. My goal is to get down to 130 again because the last time I did that my triglycerides, cholesterol, sugar, LDL, HDL, and blood pressure were all normal. I felt great and had lots of energy because I wasn't carrying around an extra 30-35 lbs.

Maybe I will finally wear a size 2 if I lose this 25 lbs.!

Have a great day.

Funny I should run across this topic tonight. I was going to have my husband snap a photo but the battery on the camera was dead. I had on a swimsuit that is very tight today and used to fit perfectly. I am a person with a distorted body image. I believe that seeing this photo in a few months will help convince me I have lost inches and pounds. When I have lost weight before I never adjusted to the new body. Also, I think it will help me to keep the weight off once I reach my goal. I think I will go for the undies picture. It is the most realistic.

P.S. My hubby was telling me Iook sexy in my swimsuit! emoticon

I know that author though I can't remember what I would have read when I was younger. If it stays boring two more chapters, pick up another one.

Tell me how you fair when you catch a matinee (only) of The Black Swan. And if you don't want to be bored, but not the best author in the world, try the library for Little Bee. I had a Tony Morrison book that was weird called Paradise. Normally I love her work but this one was a bit off. Guess it will be turned into a movie!

Yes, this is a very old thread but still true! I see myself in the mirror every morning. YUK!! I hate that fat pouch around my navel and dimples from my tubular ligation and appendix surgeries. Ugly. No need for me to take a picture because it is imprinted in my brain.

I read at night for a while when I go to bed. Right now I am reading a very boring book by Elia Kazan, "The Arrangement". So needless to say, I don't read it very long but I will finish it eventually.

Have a good week.

Bit o honey, nice loss; keep up the good work.

Brenda, this is an old thread. No crocheting this winter for me. Books!

Must take out Oliver. Poor guy has to wait hours after I awaken this winter. It's a selfish habit that is new to this new place where I live. Amazing how different my life feels living a mile away in a condo under my mother's...

Brenda,
Hearing how you have that open living sure is what I am losing. Right now I have a corner ground floor with total quiet back here. Ah well, adjust I must.

Packing is going painfully slow as I avoid as much of it as possible, and that's crazy. So for now I'll be short and make myself do something today with boxes.

At least I am finally improving my sleep and lowering the intense anxiety over this transition. I mean, I can't stop it so I might as well succumb to it.

Hi Dale,

I haven't been posting much lately--busy making the doll dress potholders. I sold ten the other day, seven to one lady for presents. I still have to make flowers to put on them, just one per dress. As soon as I show them, they sell. So much for trying to stockpile them for the craft sale here in November. I'm not sure if I can take a picture of them. Last time I tried to use the camera, I couldn't get it to work so I'll see what I can do. If I can get pictures, I'll put them on my Spark Page.

I went to the county fair today--it's was Sr. Citizen Day, half price admission. It was nice and cool this morning but then the sun came out and I had to find some shade. I took my own water and food. I was going to get a Polish Sausage but they were $6 each. All the other stuff was $8 and $9, mostly deep fried and I about gagged watching all the fatties scarfing it all down. So I ate my apple and plain Greek yogurt and two oatmeal raisin cookies to tide me over until I got home to eat real food.

The local hospital had a booth doing diabetes and cholesterol screenings and taking blood pressures. My blood count was 93 (I didn't eat breakfast before I left so I could get an accurate reading) so she told me that was good with a fast. They will mail the cholesterol results. My bloodpressure was 162/82 with a 74 pulse. Last month at the Senior Center my bloodpressure was 140 and they told me it was borderline. I don't like the 162 reading but the nurse said it isn't all that bad because I hadn't had breakfast and I was walking around the fairgrounds. Oh well........... My weight is still hovering 139/140.

I love my apartment because I have a corner one with lots of windows. Being on the third floor I didn't hang any curtains. I only close the mini blinds in my bedroom. Everything else is open. I know how hard it is to part with your stuff. I had to do that initially but I had no choice plus I needed the money because I was dead broke.

I used to sit and crochet and smoke, burn holes in what I was making, rip it out and start over again. I lost a couple sewing jobs because the things I sewed smelled like cigarettes.

Have a good day tomorrow. I'll sign off now before I write a novel. Back to my dress.

Brenda,
Yeah, sizing is all b.s. now. The new 8 is the old 12, it's true.

You remind me of the years I would sit and crochet instead of smoke. My wrists wore out so I do it less frequently -- way less. But I made blankets and shawls, and my style is to do a very tight stitch so that it is warm. I don't crochet like most people with a loose, open style.

I'm wondering if you can take a photo of what you are making here for me to see. Link me to it.

I've been struggling to keep my weight from going up during these stressful times. Moving after so many years to a place that is less open and airy and light is a bummer of great magnitude. What to let go of is hard since I am not thrilled to be in the space.

I'll have to decide it is wonderful or I'll suffer.

yesterday hit 159.0
today 157.5
What a struggle to hold on right now. Oh well.
I have to stop complaining! emoticon

I found a pair of elastic waist pants in the closet that someone gave me last year and they were too small. Now they fit me and they say size 8 and they are a little baggy. Still, my size 12 jeans are very tight when I first put them on. Go figure. Can't believe what we read, it seems.

I am staying right at 138-139 and losing inches so I feel good. I still plan on losing another 5 pounds, slowly. Crocheting keeps me from eating all the time. I have to make myself stop to eat, but what I eat is very healthy. No junk food.

The Doll Dress Pot Holder's are a big hit around the complex and I'm getting a lot of orders. Shortly I will have enough earned to buy my car tabs and new license plates before the end of this month. We have to buy new license plates every seven years. Why, I don't know, just another way for the powers that be to get more money out of us. If I want to keep my same numbered plates, I's have to pay $20 extra. There is nothing wrong with the plates that are on my car. Can't win.

I agree, having a picture is the best reality check for today's delusions. By not looking, not really seeing, who are we fooling anyway?

I've been 20 lbs overweight for quite a long time now and because I yo-yo'd the body has gotten lumpy. I had been blessed with a really good body, but I've abused it.

It's on each of us what we do to ourselves (with ourselves for ourselves - by our self!

Yes I notice the sizing...in 1998 I wore a size 14 (after I lost 40 lbs.) pants....all these years later only weigh 5 lbs less I'm in a size 10.....WHAT! The last time I wore a 10 I think I was 10yo...Lol
Taking a photo ..in my panties and bra..I really don't need to go that far. In 1988 I weighed 200 lbs. and I'm only 4'11 1/2...I have a picture of that and when I look at that picture I always say to my self..." I will NEVER look like that again!

Proportion distortion hasn't just occurred with the food on our plates, it's also happened in the fashion industry.

Today I'm wearing 6s & 8s, but I found some clothes that I probably had when I was in my late 20s, early 30s (I'm 53 now). Some of my current sized clothes are the same size as old 8s & 10s--one size 8 was the same as an old 12.

I think of it as a marketing ploy by the fashion industry. You can bet if I try something on that's a size 6, I'll like it a whole lot better than something in a size 10! I even feel better. Never mind that if they both fit, they ARE the same size.

Yes, the sizing is most likely 2 down. I bet young women know nothing of the sizes we had 16-24! They think everything ends with what, size 16? There was never a zero or a 2 either. A little girl in grade school would be a 4.

Enough. We clearly all see the folly of deceit. The picture is a great tool to undo self deception that is quite propped up by consumerism.

156.0 today and yesterday

I will talk to y'all later,

I like what I see in the mirror these days because I am losing weight and inches. My larger jeans are in the back of the closet to make purses out of as soon as I find a cute pattern. I would never take a picture of myself!!

Crazygymgirl has a good point. Since when are sizes over a 10 "Plus size"? When I was a teen, plus sizes were anything over a 18. Back then I was top heavy and took a 14 slacks and a 18/20 blouse because of my build. Before I lost the weight last year I was wearing 5x's. That to me is a plus size, not the 12 I am aspiring to fit into!

Very interesting material, although I know that I don't have the courage just yet to take a picture of myself in just panties and bra. Maybe one day I will. I never thought about clothing sizes having changed. I think this is cruel of the "powers that be." but what else is new? emoticon

My point was that even when you see yourself in a picture and you think your fat, you might have been sucking your gut in or covering up with clothes that fit you to flatter you. If you have your bra and underware on and take a picture without sucking it in or anything, just a REAL picture of yourself, that is a wakeup call. I was like EWWW TODAY IS THE DAY, I CANNOT PRETEND EVERYTHING IS OKAY ANYMORE! I am glad I did it. I also only took them with MY phone and deleted them. I would have to kill myself if anyone saw them .... or at least move to the other side of the world.

I agree about the sizing - at 110 lbs - I wore an 8. Today at about 140 - yep its an 8. the 110 was 50 years ago - I think it is 2 sizes off and not just one...

Wow, I never knew that about clothing sizes. Most of my life I have been a 12, now I'm a 10? I weigh +10 more now than I used to. So, if I get down to an 8, I'm actually a 10. How confusing.............

Crazy Gym Girl,
I am glad you acknowledge the sizing scam in America, too. The clothing industry responded to our population by deciding to normalize what is going on. Otherwise, they wouldn't have as many sales.

But as far as you not looking at yourself, let me tell you a story. When I was, oh, 23 or 24 years old, I took a picture of myself nude. I was stunned and horrified to see how fat I was. I lost that weight afterward and kept it off for 18 years before I slowly started creeping up again. Later, my kid brother actually did find the picture. I was horrified and embarrassed.

Know that I was 5' 5 1/2" tall then. The picture was with me at a horrible 160 lbs. LOL That's right folks. A mere 4 lbs above what I am today, and today I shrank to the height of 5'4".

So get over yourselves ladies. We're all looking into circus mirrors. Let's just see ourselves as we are
-- because I learned that happiness and a better healthy body are right on track from there to here.

love to you all,
the p tiger

this has been my pet peeve for quite a while now. I can't believe that at 150 lbs I wear a size 8 - 10 pants and a size 6 top! 30 years ago I was young, firm and weighed 134 lbs and wore a size 12!!!!!

It's like "they" (whoever they are... and I suspect it's the junk food industry... or the diet industry!) think we're all morons. Have you ever tried on some clothes that have international sizing... so that a small in the USA or Canada is actually a medium in the UK, a large in Germany and a 2X large in Japan!!!! We just need to remember BMI under 25 and waist to hip ratio under .75.

As for taking my picture in bra and underware... that is my nightmare... seeing it and (God forbid) anyone else seeing it...

I agree with you. Nothing like a reality check. We have too much bombardment on the "new" sizes they tell us we are.

Did you know that the clothing manufacturers had changed the sizing of clothes? They honestly made 14 the new 12 and 12 the new 10 etc. This was done within the last 25 years due to the increase in American body weights.

Most people never picked up on it. Go into the back of your closet for something that is the oldest piece of clothing. I'm telling you, the real deal is that we are all sugar and fatted up.

But I'm preaching to the choir. You all know and are doing something about it. YEAH, US ! !

Ha - yes to whatever motives you and yes to seeing my mother when I used to look in the mirror - I thought the discussion might be of those who put their pic on the web - wouldn't do that!

Usually now when I see a picture of myself I think it's my mother!! Taking a picture of myself in my underware is a terrible idea. I think rather than motivate me it would totally depress me. But, as they say, whatever works!
More motivating for me is trying on a pair of slacks or a dress that fit me well a couple of years ago- which now I can't even zip up. I want to be able to wear my nice things again.

I think I would break my camera if I did that. I should do that and post it on my dresser where I would see it everyday to remind myself what I look like. I wouldn't dare put it on the fridge though that would be a good place to stop me from opening it

Okay, Do you know how you sometimes see a picture of yourself and think... who is that? who is that fat person? Well, I thought I would take my picture after my shower with only my bra and underware on. One from the side and one from the front.
WOW if that wasnt a wake up call NOTHING will ever be. Today is finally the first day of the rest of my life. I recommend it to everyone! emoticon
