Well, I weigh this coming Sunday, and am hoping for a good number. I only weigh once a month because it gives me more of a sense of accomplishment to see a bigger number, as opposed to weighing more often. What I do know now is I bought size 6 jeans and they fit, Yeah!

Have you thought about trying the new drug Chantix? I am taking it and it works great. I took it for about a month and was able to slowly cut back to 2 or 3 cigs a day. Once I started the second month of taking them I got up one morning and before I knew it, it was 6pm and I had not even thought of smoking one. I'm going on my 4th day with no cigs and I feel great! Don't even crave one. Another good thing about Chantix is you don't gain weight while your quiting. I've actually lost 6 pounds because at the same time I decided to stop smoking I also decided to start eating healthy.
It is expensive...about $100 a scrip but when I think about how much my cigs were costing I will recoup the cost in 3 months.

Oh Maryam! First Hello, and second --YES YOU CAN!!!! I quit AND lost weight at the same time. It happened because when I quit I got almost "high" on the energy I had. The cigs were my Ritalin. I was hooked on nicotine, an addict. Then I figured that if I was going to quit--and I needed to loose weight, not gain it -- I would do things to curb my cravings that were good for me. I took up crocheting to keep my hands busy (not as easy as lighting a cig when the phone rings and can't do it while driving but it helped a lot.)
Instead of smoking I went for a walk, and ate oatmeal -- lots of it! I quit smoking after a 2 pack a day 23 year habit, and lost weight. I was a great smelling good looking babe. (That was a long time ago...) Then I went on teach classes to help others. Please if you need help, go ahead and email me.

HOW TRUE THAT IS. BUT I WATCH EVERYTHING AND HAVE DIFFERENT ROUTINE THAT I DO AT 15 TO 30 MIN'S LONG. I GET ALOT OF EXERCISE DONE WATCHING TV & ALOT OF WALKING DONE LISTEN TO MUSIC. IT WORK VERY WELL FOR ME. emoticon

When watching TV I exercise or get up to do something during the commercial breaks, if you have as many as we have(about every 5 mins if you watch the Oprah show) we can get our entire 30 minutes of exercise in.

Did my Friday workout in the morning since my mother and I were meeting friends for lunch. Then had a nice walk in the afternoon. It was sunny and warm. Tomorrow the rain is visiting us again for several days.

I've never smoked, but watched my father struggle several times to stop smoking. At age 65, he tried a final time and was successful. He was cigarette free for 20 years. But because of his smoking he recently passed away from pneumonia, a secondary cause of death related to his short struggle with lung cancer.

Maryam you WILL be able to stop smoking! Just use something that will help you. Good luck!

I am drinking alot of water. I am trying to reduce the sugar that I consume in food and other sweets. I hope that it will help me to lose as I really have been exercising, however, it just not coming. I am working on reducing carbs along with the sugar.

thank you for your support.

I am reducing my smoking and I am now down to 12 cigs per day, Years a go I smoked 60 per day in one week I reduced to 40 and the next week to 20. Over the last 2 months I have reduced to 12. I have learned that I have to stay at the reduced amount for about 2 weeks before I can reduce again and stay with fewer. The withdrawals are very strong, sweating, headaches and so on, and I get very cranky. Eating something does not help me. I guess it is because we are all different and need to do things in a way that helps "me".

Quitting smoking and gaining 20-25 pounds is something I know alot about too. I was a 1-2 pack a day smoker for 30 years. one pack a day on weekdays and 2 packs a day on the weekends. Almost religiously. And I liked the habit. emoticon
I quit 5 years ago and gained my 25 pounds in only 5 months. Never gained anymore but have only lost 5 of those pounds permanently. Its the last 20 that is the major struggle.
Quitting smoking success comes with separating the nicotene addiction and the having something in your hand and mouth. Trying to do both with some dumb patch or gum is nearly impossib le - not impossible but nearly. emoticon
I used a product that no longer exists - it as a regular cigarette in 3 stages that weened me off nicotene. It took about 5 weeks. I also ate crunchy green apples after I was done smoking to help me deal with not having something in my hand. I ate so darn many apples it wasnt funny. I am thinking I may try that same thing to curb my eating.
Good fibre.
You can accomplishhe same thing by poking pin holes in your cigarettes which will allow you to continue to smoke but redcuce the nicotene you are getting with every cigarette. Sounds crazy but it really works if you dont give up. You buy a pack and take out every cigarette - and start ith poiking 5 hole ineach and put them back in the pack. Once your body adjusts to this level - you graduate to poking 10 holes in each cigarette. AND YOU STOCK UP ON APPLES OR WHATEVER WILL WORK FOR YOU ONCE YOU STOP. Towards the end I was eating the apples and smoking the zero nicotene cigarettes.......... and then one day I just stopped the cigs and continued with the apples.

SOunds ridiculous but I know almost a dozen people - very long time smokers of more tan one pack per day who have succeeded with this plan and are now saving the almost USD$6 per pack expense.

It can bedone. I keep telling myself if I can quit smoking I should be able to lose this weight. ( and there are fairies in the skies too)

Come on Maryam, you CAN quit! Believe me, if I can quit, anyone can. I smoked for 30 years and quit in November of 2007. I did use that Chantix but my personal feeling is that it didn't really work. I decided to quit, gave away the cigarettes I had in the house. Of course it helped because they don't sell cigarettes in the mini market on the compound, there isn't a shop near the compound that sells them and I would have had to ask DH to either take me someplace that sells them or go buy them for me. Of course I put on 25 lbs too but at least I can breathe again and I can taste food now.
I will be rooting for you!

Back to the water question............ Maryam - your info helped. It led me to research this site further and to find the SP conversion tables

8 cups = 64.0000 fluidounces

the cups I was referring to is a cooking measurement as if you were following a recipe and it said ADD 1 cup of milk..... we should be consuming 8 of these cups per day minimum which is 64 fluid ounces. The conversion tables here are terrific and can be found in the diet and nutrition section.


I am someone who sips all day - and usually my preference is decaf coffee. I am now sipping on warm water - which is tricking myself into getting my waer intake. I cannot believe that at this age I need to trick myself but it seems I do to breakold habits and learn new ones.

Maryam, don't you just love winters in the Middle East? When we lived in the EAstern Province of Saudi, we did used to have winter. It was cool from November until March. The kids used to have to cover in blankets on the long drive to school because there was no heater in the bus. We even had to run the heat in the house for 3 days one time, LOLOL. We haven't had much of a winter here at all this year either.

I try drink at least 64 oz a day. I am having trouble getting motivated to exercise. I walk 9-11 miles a day (pedometer) at work - 5 days a week, dog classes 2-3 times a week and show dogs when I have weekends off. Suggestions?

WATER QUESTION......

I HAD A GREAT DAY. I WALKED 2HRS THIS MORNING & 2 HRS THIS EVENING. I FEEL SO GOOD RIGHT NOW. NOW I AM GOING TO WATCH LIFTIME THE REST OF THE NIGHT. HAPPY V DAY EVERYONE.

I keep on walking 6 days a week. I did 43 minutes today but it was very humid here.

Being a nurse I know that there are many meds which can affect a person's weight, and that many can be eliminated when someone loses weight and maintains a healthy lifestyle. Many cannot be without their meds,but even so can lead a more healthy life style because of them. Be the best you can be no matter the circumstances.

Sweetcakes527...you are one of the lucky ones that do not have to take medication. I have to take medication for my mental illness which make it hard to loose weight. I am trying to get off my cholestrol medicine by losing the weight that I need to lose. I have finally figured out how to use the
nutritional tracker. When I started this journey I was at the top of BM for obesity but now I am at the bottom of that grouping! I love to exercise too!

My meds put weight on me too the label reads excessive weight gain ,but I need my meds for high bp and my heart. We can do this a little bit at a time .Good Luck and keep up the good work we are all here for you. You are doing great.

I am staying within my calorie intake and exercising. I am on medication which I think is hindering my weight loss as you gain weight. I am sure that inches will turn into pounds eventually.

Today I walked 52 minutes, 2.67 miles, plus did days 3 & 4 boot camp work out videos plus did an extra dumb bell workout. WOO HOO! I feel GREAT today.

if your nutrition tracker is correct then you eat way too little. I suggest that you never ever eat less than 1250 calories per day.

Ripit56 and Sassyredhead this is a wonderful team with good support and friendly advise .Hope you enjoy it here . emoticon I started walking alittle at a time my own challenge was to make it up my own driveway and to the top of our hill, with out getting to winded and having to stop a dozen time .I have reach that challenge . and boy was I proud of myself. I gave up my slimfast bars for this months challenge. Good luck and wecome.I know you will like it here I sure do.

Last week I didn't quite meet my goal of fitness minutes. Close, but not quite. So far I've had two great days of workouts this week, and am going for working out every day. My workouts will vary a lot, so I'm not worried about overdoing. BUT if I feel tired, I'll give it a rest because the last thing I want at this point is an overuse injury.

I am doing good for myself so far. Now with Valentine's coming up,my sweetie knows not to get me chocolate. I have not cut dark chocolate out but have limited myself very strictly. Got to do better on my exercise this week, as last week was not so good as was feeling under the weather. Does anyone have a good recipe for lentils, and not soup I have a few of those. Thanks

Ran around all day with the electrical repairmen - opening and shutting our gates for them to get in and out of our property. No electricity since about midnight yesterday. The lightening storm decided to take our electricity service out.

when I started walking it was just 10 minutes a day, now I often walk for a couple of hrs when I have time. I also slowly added my strength exercises one by one and only a few minutes in the beginning. It payed of as I now stick to it.

I'm changing mine to: No candy for one week.

I was successful with no wine, but this week I am going to a special Valentine's Day wine pairing dinner, so obviously I am going to drink the wine!

I fell off the exercise for a few days, was completely burnt out from trying to get too many challenges in. This week I will just report what I do, rather than promise to add more.

No problem, I think I will try to bake the bread next time I go to Denmark to visit my family, there it is very easy to buy and maybe it doesn't work anyway no way to know before I've tried. If I bring some wine yeast back home I will just put it between the dried herbs (like rose pepper) that I can't find here.

Ack Maryam, I didn't see your note about the wine yeast. No they don't sell that here, DH brought it back from the US in a shoe or something. They do have regular baking yeast in a huge 1/2 kg bag so I bring the little jars of bread yeast back and put it in my fridge.

I just realized how to do this so here goes. I have been following the fitness strength training since the second week of January. It is going rather well. I have not touched the peanut butter jar (my definite weakness) all week and hope I can make it to Sunday without it. Walk every day at work and do step aerobics 3 mornings a week. emoticon

Good evening team,

at work I used to have a bowl of fruit on my table beside my bottle water. You can peel and divide an orange in the morning then it is not so messy to eat.Keep it in a plastic back or airtight container to keep it fresh.

2/5 - still a little burnt out, so no exercise today. Happy to at least clean my house.... plus I have to stay up almost the whole night to get my DH to the airport at a ridiculous hour.

He's going to be gone for a few days, not sure I will avoid the wine tonight...he bought a really special one.
