I have always been a dancer, but taking ballroom lessons about 1.5 years ago really changed everything-- gave me a lot of confidence. I joined the west coast swing club here in Tucson. They have a lesson and dance every week on Thursday; they also meet at one of the country bars for an early dance and lesson on Saturday. Since I know many of the members (men and women), it is a safe venue for me to go by myself. I know there will be people I know. Check out the clubs; they're everywhere.

It's not a diet; it's a lifestyle.

Loved yolur post./ I just started taking ballroom dance lessons- and boy do I hope I can meet a dancing partner too.
The lessons are great - and already I'm having fun.

This team is like my sisterhood!!! I have been working out with a trainer since the beginning of the year. I do mostly weight training with her, and she has given me tips on cardio-- like running (something I thought I would never do). Anyway, I'm also spinning-- even more of a workout than running--and dancing swing and salsa.

In February, I lost 5 lbs after 2 months with the trainer. I was elated!!!! I was dancing 3-4 nights a week, cycling, walking, and weight training. THEN, I started dating a non-dancer who liked to eat late in the evening, drink wine, and watch movies. In just 2 weeks of dating this guy, I gained the 5 lbs. back. Well, we broke up at the beginning of June. I'm back to dancing regularly (plus weights, spinning, yoga, running, walking). This week, I think I lost 1 pound. No more dating non-dancer couch potatoes for me!!!!

My body has changed, and I have lost inches-- thanks to all of the working out. Shorts that were wearable but not comfortable last summer fit great. Shorts that I couldn't zip in May fit perfectly. (I often buy "goal" clothes; things that almost fit. I'm now wearing all of my goal clothes and getting lots of compliments.

It's not a diet; it's a lifestyle.

NJJazz I am having the same problem. People are noticing that I look better...arms and legs...but the scale doesn't move. I am beginning to think the scale needs to be replaced. I am fighting a summer cold now so the work outs have slowed down a little.

One last comment - I hard a comedian once say that her metabolism weighed 25 pounds because since they turned 50 that was the extra weight they piled on and the Doctor told her it was her metabolism.

My metabolism weighs at least 20 pounds.
Thought that was funny

This topic really hit home. I too am working out at least 5x er week - eating right most of the time,,, and still cant seem to make progress on the scale or in the darn belly area.
MJy legs are thighs have improved and tightened up nicely... but I have 15 pounds to lose and the scale is not cooperating.
Frustrating. at least I have picked up some healthy and better habits.

I have never had a problem with my weight until I turned 50 now on sparkpeople for 2 weeks, added 50mins to my already 45 mins a day of cardo and weights, reduced my cal intake and have gained a pound. I am sure it will come off but 2x a slow as it went on. I trust that the system works and at 50+ I have to live it every day

To all the "Slow Losers..." You have my sympathy. I became frustrated too, after more than 6 weeks of counting calories and walking a minumum of 1 hour each day, and not ONE pound lost. I made an appt. with a Nutritionist through our health plan, and she encouraged me to KEEP GOING, add some CARDIO, and join SparkPeople! The cardio seems to be working, as I have lost 5 lbs. in the last 5 weeks. Of course I track calories, drink water, exercise, etc. and finally joined SparkPeople today. The "trigger" for my ability to FINALLY begin losing however, seems to be getting that heart rate up, at least 30 min., 3 times a week doing some kind of Cardio like dancing or Aerobics. I'm finding I have more stamina, sleep better, and YAY! I'm FINALLY LOSING WEIGHT emoticon !!! Good luck to all -- we CAN stick with it! emoticon

Pepperseed, my husband has lost 20 pounds and more than 2 inches off his waist while I've yo-yo'd back and forth with 1-3 pounds lost, then regained! It's like that commercial with the 2 people on the couch and the lady loses in one particular place while the man gets thin....it's going to take us a while before we see success but maybe that will make it even better!

Happy weekend to all.

Pepperspeed,
I think you may be like I was, and if so, you are building muscle which is heavy. It took me two months to lose 5 pounds. Just enjoy having clothes fit better for the moment. We have to keep up the healthy lifestyle in the meantime. Lots of luck.

Hi there
I am new with sparkies, but I have the same problem. 4 weeks into diet South Beach with daily exercise 30-35 walk+jog 2.3 miles, in the sun or rain and the scale is the same. Clothes yes I lost inches, but scale is still there. I track my calories and I am daily 1200 to 1300. My husband lost 16 Lbs doing the same thing with me and eating the same food. I am still patient I need to lose 20 Lbs. emoticon , and I will :-)

I can totally relate. Everyone says, "If you try this [personal trainer, running, spinning, whatever] you will really lose weight. Well, not really!!!!! I have lost inches and dress sizes but no pounds since December.

Since starting with the trainer in late December, I look different. Luckily I have pictures for encouragement; I'm ready to throw out the scale.

It's not a diet; it's a lifestyle.

I was out of town Sunday through yesterday and worked out in the hotel fitness center, did a lot of sightseeing type walking, ate reasonably except for creme brulee for dessert on night(!) and didn't gain anything at all! So it's paying off in some respects. I've gotten lots of good ideas and encouragement from all of you!

Thank you for this message it really helped. Not that I want to wait 5 months before losing any weight, but just knowing that I need to hang in there. It is strange how our bodies slow down starting in the 40's but we need to do twice as much to lose the weight.

I am still stuck weight-wise, but I discovered today that my waist is 2 inches smaller, so I feel encouraged. We just have to keep up the exercise and eating well and eventually we are going to start losing weight.

I just saw this message board, today, and was reading all of the comments. I was very interested, because I haven't lost even 1 lb.,yet, either. Still, trying to figure out what I need to do,or not do. I keep telling myself, it has to come off sooner,or later.

I've lost 22 lbs over 7 months, but there are MANY weeks when the scale doesn't budge at all. I would really like to lose 5 more lbs-but haven't lost anything in 3 weeks.

Just hang in there--over time, even a 3 or 4 oz. weight loss per week adds up to significant tonage.

I didn't think I would ever lose any. Everyone kept telling me I was replacing my fat with muscle and it was heavier. It took me almost 3 months to lose any. Keep trying and don't give up. I have finally lost 9 pounds since Christmas.

I feel discouraged some days too. I have decided that the less a person needs to lose, the harder it gets. I guess that is why we always hear about how hard it is to lose those last 10 lbs.

It has taken me 2 months to lose 5 pounds, and I have exercised every one of those days and eaten about 1200 to 1500 calories. I have also heard that even if seems like you cannot lose even one pound, just keep trying and it will happen. So don't give up. I believe it will happen.

Sounds like all of us are having the same problems. I told myself that I would work at this for 6 months and that if I had a bad day or got discouraged I would not quit but keep going. For the first 4 months I tracked everything and joined some team challenges -the scale would go up then down then back up etc. At the end of 4 months I had lost a total of 5 pounds - was very discouraged but told myself 1. It's still 5 pounds better than zero and 2. I said 6 months so I still had two months to go. In the 5th month I lost 5 pounds and lost 7 in the 6th month! Unfortunately, I had a ton of things going on in June and didn't get to exercise regularly or participate in challenges so I know I have gained a few pounds back. But decided that this coming Monday I am going to try for another 6 months to lose those last 5 and maintain. Long winded but the point is don't give up - your body may just need time to respond.

Good luck!

Linda

I know that everyone says that the older we get, the harder it is to lose weight. I just want to tell people it really is possible, at least up to that last 10 lbs., anyway. lol

When I was 48, I lost 30 lbs. over the space of about 12 weeks. It was a high protein, low carb diet supervised, I guess you could say, by a place called Metabolic Research Center, and supplemented on my part with lots of walking. It worked for me, and I've kept most of it off for over 10 years. In those intervening years, I've developed a thyroid issue that is supposed to make losing weight even more difficult, and apparently it is. I want to lose that last 10 lbs., and it's been veerry slow going, but it's going.

Just don't get discouraged. You're not getting any younger, so losing weight will never be easier for you. There is no better day than today.

I was all ready to click 'post message' when we heard a huge boom--think a transformer blew! I'm glad the computer and tv aren't fried!

Cascais, I'm going out of town for most of next week but will weigh and measure my food as a priority when I get back. Maybe that will help with the portion distortion and start a downward trend!

Congrats with the compliments...I put on a workout top I hadn't worn in a while and my husband noticed that I was trimmer in the middle...never been my trouble spot before the last weight gain! But inches gone is rewarding in itself. Thanks for your input (and your message)! And welcome to our hometown team--I just saw that you've joined!

EMPTEENEST3 - I know how you feel, so I bought a digital scales and weigh everything I eat. Wow, were my "eyeballs" off! I was (am!)eating more than I should compared to the calories I am burning. But, I was happy to see the inches start to melt away. I cannot tell from looking in the mirror, but the tape measure is showing improvement and my DH told me that my butt is getting smaller (and my boobs, too). I also bought a heart rate monitor to track calories burned and for me it usually shows less than what the treadmill or elliptical read - but at least I know.

It is so hard now that we are 50+ to lose that one pound and so easy to gain it back. But you are among friends who will help you on your journey. Good luck!

Karen, I checked out your Spark Page---love your pool area! What did you do to get over the 'bad spots' so to speak? I know my metabolism slowed quite a bit as I hit my mid 40's. I feel good and am really active now compared to how I used to be even when I was thin, but don't have the 'hum' that I used to way back when!

Emptynester, how are you doing now? I hope you realize you're truly not alone in this. I think we each try in our own way and have to 'work it out' in a way it makes sense to us.

Karen, I don't think it's the fact of not thinking positively as much as we just needed commiseration and a 'hand up' at the moment! I'm a very positive person, as are most of the people I've met here...it's just that sometimes no matter what you've been doing, that scale doesn't move and you get frustrated! Thanks for all the help everyone's offered here...the weight will come off and we really are moving in the right direction!

Hope you all had a wonderful 4th!

CHANGE THE WAY YOU LOOK AT THINGS AND THE THINGS YOU LOOK AT WILL CHANGE. IF YOU SAY: I CAN'T SEEM TO LOSE EVEN ONE POUND. THEN YOU ARE DOOMED TO MAKE THIS A REALITY. SAY INSTEAD: I CAN LOSE ONE POUND. YOU WILL MAKE THAT YOUR NEW REALITY. AFTER YOU LOSE ONE POUND, THEN YOU WILL WORK ON LOSING ONE MORE!

EMPTEENEST3 and TEACHINGK, please let us know how it goes and when you break the plateau. I've been on one for a few weeks now, and I'd like to hear from someone who has done it successfully.

Best wishes.

For me--very well could be. I do measure some things but eyeball a lot--and my eyes are always bigger than my stomach, lol.

Could it be portion distortion?

I know I eat mostly all good food products... fruits, veggies... try very hard to balance my protein, carbs & fats... BUT, sometimes I'm not great about portion control.

It's a biggie when you're used to being able to eat mostly anything you want and then... your metabolism goes kaput!

See you lighter!

On Your Nutrition tracking page - go towards the bottom of the page on the right side and there is a clickable bubble that says something about "see my full report" - when you click on that it will give you more details and there is a pie chart at the bottom of that page.

Where is a pie chart? I know my totals for the day are often off...even though the calories are in the correct range. That might be a really good thing to see!

I was stuck in a rut also. I increased my water and really looked at my pie chart. I was way low in carbs, and high in fat/protein. This is due to years of low-carbing it. I have made some different food choices and it's starting to melt off now! My total grams of protein, fat, carbs, cals were usually within the range, but my carbs were very low. It threw the whole pie chart off! Something to think about anyway. Don't give up, it will come off!

Wow I am in the same situation, although I have been losing inches. I would love to see the scale go down.
I am doing strength three times a week and cardio three times a week. Keeping track of my calories, protin, fat. The weight has been the same for three month's. I no what you mean by beinging upset from not seeing any results.

Another contributing factor can be age too - I know that once I hit 50, it has been very slow going! Watch your sodium content - be sure and get enough calories - not eating enough can be as bad as eating too many!

Emptynester, we could be long-lost twins! You're not alone. I'm at the same weight and in the exact same situation as you, doing the same things with the same non-results. It really doesn't make sense with "doing the right things" and no change. I don't know what to tell you to do differently either. I DO track what I eat, I do vary my calories between low and high days but with no real change in weight. I have seen results with more firmness and a couple of inches in 'girth' though. The thing I keep telling myself is that I'm better off now than when I started here in April and will continue to get better..ala the old L'Oriel commercial, lol!

Good luck, and don't give up.

have you tried using the nutrition tracker on sparkpages? You program in it your weight , heighth etc and it tells you how many calories you need to consume. While watching the Biggest Loser I found out that you actually can eat too few calories which in turn your body then somehow will not let you lose weight. Maybe that is what is going on.You could find that out if you fill out the nutrition tracker. Just a thought.

I've been working out for a little over 3 weeks now. I alternate between cardio and strength. I do about 30 minutes of strength and 30-40 minutes of cardio on the treadmill - walking at a good pace for 5 minutes and then fast for 60-90 seconds. I have increased the rate of my 'regular' pace bit by bit and I'm not as sore as when I first started with the weights - can even do 2 reps of 6 push-ups now emoticon
I do drink a lot of water - don't necessarily count how many but other than my tea in the morning that's all I drink. I have been trying really hard not to eat any sweets and when I have to have something I have a bite size Snickers or a fruit bar (the frozen 50 calorie one). I make sure I have a good size salad every day - low cal dressing and not much of it either. HIgh fiber cereal (I even measure it) and watch my portions at dinner. Sooooo, I feel like I am really doing what I need to do and yet I have the same results as 2 months ago when I wasn' doing any of this. emoticon

How long have you been trying consistently? What are you doing when you work out? Length of workout? I read on Sparkpeople that unless you are at least a BMI of 30 you can not expect to lose 2 pounds a week.
I do think that drinking water is a good idea. I have trouble keeping my water consumption going unless I have it beside me.I have to make a real conscious effort to drink water.
Keep posting everyone on this site are so nice.

Remember - all calories are not created equal - and all exercise is not created equal either. Drink lots of water too! There are so many variables I'm not sure that I can give you advice, but do drink lots of water and eat plenty of fruits/veggies.

emoticon I am so frustrated I could just cry. I'm watching what I eat and am exercising 5-6 days a week. Even if I wasn't watching what I eat it seems like adding exercising would do something but that scale has not budged since I started this. And no, my clothes aren't getting any looser either.
What am I doing wrong. emoticon
