It is frustrating to see the big picture. I need to lose 220 lbs. I have decided to take weight loss one meal at a time. If I mess up (and I know I will-I am human), aim to do better at the next meal.

Something else that I find helps me is to think of the weight I lose in real terms. For example - pick up a 5-lb bag of flour, or potatoes. It's heavy! Imagine having to walk around all day carrying it - that would be really hard!

Keep doing that for each 5-lb increment you lose - so 2 5-lb bags, 3 bags, etc.

This weight was on our bodies, folks! We were walking around carrying that ALL THE TIME.

This helps me when I bemoan slow weight loss. Each pound makes it easier for me to walk, to move. Each pound makes a difference.

Journey of 150 lbs begins with a single step...

This is something I really struggle with too. I've lost about 40 lbs so far, but would like to lose over 100 more. I try to focus on the 40, but sometimes it's really hard not to think about the 100. Like others have said, I try to find a non-scale ways to measure my progress, like being able to exercise a few more minutes or staying within my calorie range.

What I love about this place is the support of people that truly know and understand as they have been or are currently in your shoes. I am 1 month in to WW's and exercise and I lost 7 pounds. It was the hardest I have ever worked. A few years ago I did a drastic diet and lost 30 pound in the same amount of time but i did it in an unhealthy way and now it is back with friends, so now I want to do it in a healthy way. I went from only being able to walk on my treadmill for 15 minutes @ 2.5 at a time to 30 minutes @ 2.8 w/ varying inclines in just 1 month. This is what motivates me to stay with it. I now do 30 minutes 3x's a day and I know I am building muscle and losing inches and that is more important to me at this time then the pounds lost. Stick with it for 1 month and I promise you it will get easier, you will gain courage and strength and on those bad days, come here and get strength from all of us that are in your corner.

That was awesome advice KLINGONMOMMY. I planned on posting a message myself, but I couldn't have said it better. Congratulations on your success.

When I first started my journey (for the 100th time) I was completely overwhelmed by the fact that I needed to lose more than 200 pounds. I felt disheartened a lot. The first thing I did was stop watching Biggest Loser, the second thing I did was take some advice from someone here at spark. As you do lose weight, just think at how long its been since you have been able to do x-activity or how long it's been since you've weighed x-amount. It's a long journey that never really ends, because this really is a journey and not a race to the finish. Good Luck and just remember you have support.

I can completely understand that overwhelmed feeling! I've tried so many times to lose weight, only to end up gaining it all back and then some. At the moment I'm the heaviest I've ever been and have a little over 322 lbs to lose. When I look at that number it seems impossible, but I know that I have to take it day by day, even minute by minute sometimes, but I can and must do it! You can too...believe in that and claim it!

My most favorite quote is " A year from now you'll wish you had started a year ago''. I have told myself on every birthday since I was 20 that I was not going to weigh as much the next year. I was gonna take a year to get myself healthy. Here I am, 32 and heavier than ever. I read that quote and something clicked. I love looking at success galleries on here. So much hope in those. Good luck to you on this journey. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I understand how you feel. I have to loose enough to make one or even TWO more people. Its overwhelming. But I guess its, the more you have to loose, the more you truly have to gain.

I have 110 lbs to lose. It seems impossible, but as I lose 1 to 3 pounds every week I can see my body slowly transforming. I can't wait to be able to be healthy and looking good. I finally was able to find jeans that were tight and made me look good and not sloppy by losing only 15 pounds. I'm focused although my goal seems so far away I will reach it and lose all that unhealthy weight!

I really like reading the encouragement here! I love the 10% goals. We have to learn to be present and accept where we are today. We can't wait for someday to start living. We can't wait until we are skinny or under a certain weight. We have to live today the best we can and know that if we keep making good choices there is no magical "finish line." We choose to be healthy for the rest of our lives.

I am 5'1", down to 350 lbs. That seems so impossible to me, so I split it in half. I set my goal to lose in the middle of where I want to be. When I reach that goal I'll reset my goal.

You could even just set your sights in 10 or 20 pounds at a time. Don't look at the big picture (you don't hear that very often!). Look at little segments and work on those, 1 at a time.

It's very encouraging to see it working for people, being new myself, I like to know we are not all new and just seeing you on here is motivation :)
I am 5 days in, and loving the new life already. I celebrate every pound loss! I know I have far to go, but I am aiming for under 300lbs...as my first attainable goal.

I also agree with everyone else. Small goals are the most satisfying way to view your weight loss, I chose small goals and with each achievement the end seems so much more realistic. Initially I started with an end goal of loosing almost 200lbs. It has taken time, but I can honestly say that with each achievement, no matter how small or large the time seemed irrelevant, it was the end result that was worth it. Keep tracking and never give up (four years in and still loving it!!) emoticon emoticon emoticon

Agreed with everyone. Focus on smaller goals. For every 10,15,20 lbs you get closer to your ultimate goal. It's not an easy process. But if you think of this way. If you quit, it will take just that much longer to get there and that more depressing. Don't quit girl. You can do this. We are all in the same boat!

You have to remember you didn't put the weight on over night so it is not going to come off over night. Don't focus on the end weight make little goals.

That was always my down-fall, but for me...what makes now different to all the other times is that I HAVE TO get healthy! Before I just focused on getting slender...now I am facing health issues that will just get worse if I don't do something about it. This is the VERY most I have ever had to lost (183-193 pounds) but I know it will happen little by little and that's what I focus on...the little goals. I not only have myself to think about but a daughter who's disabled and I'm main caregiver. I am tired of feeling tired and sick of feeling sick. I'm not saying it's totally easy now because it's not. I have bad days but I pick myself back up and move forward. Like everyone else said...I'm also not focusing on the big number...I get excited every time I lose a pound...heck...just losing 1/2 a pound gets me excited! LOL

Becky

God is my strength!

Read the bottom of my ticker and repeat it over and over.If you want to lose weight then you came to the right place and we are all going to do this together. If one person gives up then we have failed. You deserve to be healthy no matter how long it takes to accomplish that goal

My suggestion would be to read the SparkPeople article "The 10% Solution". It really helped me when I first started on this site. If you notice my tracker, my goal weight is 234 - a 26 lb loss from my starting weight. Why 26 lbs? Because it's 10% of my starting weight. When I reach 234, I'll adjust my tracker to lose 10% of my body weight again. It makes it much easier to handle things inside my head.

It's like the old saying: "how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time." How do you lose weight? 1 lb at a time.

If it helps change your ticker to a smaller goal. Maybe 25 pounds instead of the whole amount. When you see it going down and not in short spurts then it will help you see you are doing the right thing. Make small goals with things that you will enjoy as a reward - get your hair done, get a pedi, buy a book, something you would enjoy but don't always make time for. It doesn't have to be big things. :)

I agree with the others. Focus on small goals and achievements. I am on week 5 with spark. 5 weeks ago I could only ride my bike for 5 minutes. Now I ride for 20. Pick a few small goals and work towards them.
You can do it!

I agree, try to focus the day to day. But that can be hard sometimes. As someone who actually has weight equal to a whole other morbidly obese person to lose....I know that number can loom above you. Try to forget about it. I even set my tracker to only show 50 lbs at a time, so I don't have to see it there. If you stress constantly over how many pounds you have to lose you'll be sabotaging yourself.

I count him braver who overcomes his desires than he who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is the victory over self.

Don't look at it as weight to be lost.

I have a hard enough time keeping to my 30 minutes of daily exercise and eating within my calorie range. I focus really hard on seeing how many days I can keep up with just those. The weight just takes care of itself when you are following the rule burn more calories than you take in.

Don't look at the big picture make smaller goals of 5 - 10 pounds and before you know it your smaller goals will make the big picture look better.
