Did 30 mins on the elliptical today. I am so excited. First time I have been able to do that in a very long time. Hope everyone is having a good day.

I was finally able to get back in the gym today after being sick. I was sooooo out of shape. It is amazing how much of a toll being physically in bed, and a round of antibiotics has on your health. I probably over did it, as I was shaky towards the end, but I still took the time to get it the spa and relax. I came home ate some lunch, and then literally took a 2 hour nap!!!!

I feel so refreshed, and am looking to forward to body pump tomorrow!

PTOMOM96---The amount of time is plenty--but what about the intensity? Is it just a leisurely stroll, or are you speed walking? This week while you are working out check in with yourself and ask, can I work harder, and if you can than do it. Upping the level of intensity can make all the difference.

Also on another note, once you add exercise your body will start to build muscle, so please don't measure your success only by the scale, it lies in terms of progress. Here are some other ways to measure;
how you feel
are you sleeping better
do your clothes fit better
inches, are you measuring yourself? Once a month is a good rule of thumb if you haven't yet, start.
Pictures, a weekly picture can help you see the difference.

Also I know you are working out, but how is your eating? All the exercise in the world won't make a bit of difference if you go home a chow down on Oreo cookies=)

Hope this helps,
Hattie

I exercise 5-6 days a week for usually an hour. I walk a minimum of a mile a day and have added weight training. Am I doing enough? Not enough? I have lost 8 pounds in the last four weeks but I feel like I should be losing more. It is already hard enough carving out an hour to exercise everyday. I don't know if I can do more as I am already worn put from what I am doing. emoticon

Thanks DanaDobry----you saved me from eating a huge bowl of ice cream, and I don't even like ice cream. Instead I went to bed, and woke up this morning feeling quit a bit better. I am gonna get dresses and walk my dogs around the block, not a ton of exercise, but enough to get my body moving, maybe that will help. I used to hit the cardio/strength train 5 days a week, and I think maybe that might be why I am not getting better. Laying in bed doesn't get your body systems moving. It will only be a 10 minute walk, but it will be something, and I will be getting fresh air and sunshine.

Here's to a new day!

Hang in there, Hattie! You've been sick, who knows what effects the meds had on your body. You could be retaining water, you get dehydrated when you're sick. I'm not a doctor, but I can tell you I was well past 240 when we conceived our son. I had a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. Get back on the healthy train, tomorrow is a new day!

Ughhhh ladies, or I guess I should say HELP!!!!!!

I have been sick for the last 9 days, I thought I was better the last time I posted---I wasn't. After a round of antibiotics, and just eating whatever sounds good, because I really don't eel like eating, I have put on 10 pounds. I want to throw in the towel. I feel like poo and I am getting fatter. Not what I wanted to have happen. We are going to try and conceive in September, and I wanted to get to 240 before that happened, I would have to lose 15 pounds in 3 weeks to make that possible--not gonna happen. Mad, sad, and just generally pissed right now...now excuse me while I go back to sleep.

Words of encouragement please, they are greatly appreciated.

Sorry to read about your break up. It is good to let go and be free.... it's easy to lose yourself in the daily grind. Glad your back and didn't give up and say to hell with your health.

So yeah it's been a terrible four months since I last really got online. Ended a three year relationship when she decided that a promotion was more important than me, moved back in with my parents, took four long business trips. Good stuffs. Only gained about 6 lbs through it all so I consider that a victory considering I literally drank my dinner for a few weeks there. Plus I can't resist sushi... it's like crack. For the first time in years though, I just let go and had fun. That meant more to me than those 6 lbs ever will. I regained a piece of myself. Literally and figuratively I guess lol. In any case, back at it now and kicking butt. I did splurge a little at Arby's but I'm back on top today!

Zenyaw,

I am terrible about breakfast myself. I get carried away with work and totally forget to eat. I've actually started to look into programs like Shakeology and another called Vissi a buddy of mine sells. They aren't exactly cheap, but they are packed with protein and other healthful nutrients that may help you get a bigger jump on your day. If you are interested let me know and I can get you info.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your cousin. Your family will be in my thoughts. Yeah southern Texas Mexican is pretty much like mana from heaven good stuff. Terrible for weight management...but insanely delicious. Great job getting back on track.

Hey Ladies! Well I had to go out of town for a week, because my cousin passed away. I flew home for his memorial service and I realized how bad I eat when I'm back in South Texas. No one makes greasy mexican food like the border town where I'm from. I have been back since Monday and I am back on track. I have started a new breakfast routine. Instead of eating a greasy high in fat sausage and cheese biscuit or skipping breakfast all together, I am having a Chocolate drink like slim fast or ensure. Something that will give me nutrients and I pair that with a banana. I realized when I skip breakfast I binge at lunch. Since I have started doing the breakfast shakes and banana, I feel okay with just a salad for lunch. Since I have started doing this, I have felt like I have more energy and motivated to go to the gym. Normally I feel so weighed down and don't want to do anything. I am tracking all of my food and knowing that I will have to track it is making me think twice before eating it!

I have Aqua Zumba again tonight and I am excited to get back to it because I missed all of July. I have also committed to walking 2 - 5ks in October. So I better start training for those , since I can barely walk 25 minutes without being exhausted now! How are you ladies doing with your goals? What are you doing to work towards them? And what have you struggled with this week?

♥ Zenya

Thank you, Hattie! This is all really good advice. I tend to want to do things all-out, guns blazing, work out, eat right, track, wash my face every night, take my vitamins, you know the drill. Then when I fall off, I feel like it has all gone to he!! and why should I bother anyway! So, this week I'm committing to tracking. That's it. Even if I have something that might not be the best choice, I will track it. I need to get myself back into that routine and hold myself accountable. Baby steps. Thanks for your words of wisdom - keep 'em coming! :-)

DanaDobry-----TO get back on the wagon I promised myself last night that first thing this morning I would have a good breakfast, and stick with my 1600 calorie range, journal everything, and get in all my water(120oz) and freggies(6). I am on track, 1256 calories so far for the day, 100oz water, and 4 freggies. I also hit the gym and did 45 minutes of cardio and 45 minutes of strength training.
Let me tell you, I am EXHAUSTED, normally the workout wouldn't phase me, but since I haven't been eating healthy, or as active as normal, it took a toll on my body. I think seeing this encourages me to stick with it, because I hate feeling this way.

So in short, how do you get back on, you just start. Since it hasn't been that long since you have been off, and you have done it all before--choose 3 things to focus on for the rest of the week--mine are water, freggies, calories. Don't beat yourself if it takes a bit, just being aware shows progress.

Declare74---I know sometimes that darn scale isn't nice, but follow your doctors advice, health is so much more than that number.

Hugs,

Hattie

I didn't realise how long it had been since I last popped in here :-( sorry

Well I was feeling quite defeated. Doctor insisted on me going up on my calories from the start of June so as ordered I did and every week I have watched the weight go up, up up - since the start of June I have gained 8kgs :-( but today was my first weigh in since then with it going back down :-) Weigh in last Wednesday was 127.7kgs today 125.9kgs so I am VERY HAPPY today

In non-scale news I am feeling pretty good hair and nails look healthier than they have in years, skin is okay too ... never managed all three looking healthy at once before lol

I have been suffering with our cold wet weather and a head cold however am making it work food and exercise wise :-)

Exhausted momma tonight. I did BodyPump, & 35 minutes of cardio today, then I had stiff for church tonight. As well as walking dogs, and taking care of the house. Going to try and turn in early, and just have some relaxation/reading time.

Today I notice my work is paying off, my belly is going down and I felt more confident to see that it is not only numbers on a scale , I am super happy also that I am feeling better too, two months ago I thought I would not be able to get better from the knee injury that lasted so long, but thank God I have healed a bit and am getting stronger.

Hi everyone,

I am finding that this thread is really motivational to me. I keep coming back to this group and checking in here to see what you all have written and how your journey is going.

I am very inspired by how you (Hattie and Zenya both, I think) plan ahead what you're going to be eating in the coming days/weeks. Prepping for snacks/meals, planning menus... Those are things that I've never done before, but I think I'm going to try doing.

I feel like I'm such a newbie at this (probably because I am). There's so much to learn!

I read this cool article in Glamour magazine yesterday, and I wanted to share the best part of it with you all. It was an interview with Katie Holmes, and the interviewer asked her about her views on success. What makes a person successful? Are there any common traits between successful people? She said that she believed that you have to give it a year, that you shouldn't expect to be successful at something in less than a year. I suppose she was probably talking about big goals, not the tiny ones, but it really inspired me when it came to weight loss. So often, in this instant gratification society that we live in, we expect results quickly and get discouraged when they don't come as fast as we'd like. Her comment reminded me to stay steady and keep trying (both at my weight loss goals and at other goals I have) and not give up when I can't just get up and run. Baby steps first. Just gotta keep working on it.

Sorry for the long, rambling post there. I just started writing and got carried away! haha

I hope you all have a wonderful day today! Let's do this! emoticon

Zenya--It's funny how we inspire each other--a few weeks ago you inspired me to go to Aqua Zumba=)

I have found in my journey, it's the little things that make ALL the difference.

So this week I have been a 'cheaterpants', when it comes to weighing in. I was trying to only weigh in on Mondays, but when I came back from vaca, and saw a 4 pound gain on Monday, I wanted to make sure I was doing enough to have it come off. Well it has, phew=) Yes, I know it was mostly water, but it is still great to have it gone.

Recently I discovered I am not getting enough protein, so I have started using the EAS soy to make a morning shake, and get 20g in. I have to say, my arms are much more toned, after just a few days. So if you are like me, and doing strength/weight training, and weren't seeing as much payoff as you wanted--pay attention to your protein. Just a 20g increase has made all the difference. I am currently getting about 80 grams, my muscles must not have had enough to repair themselves well.

Well off for a trip to the dentist and a day of errands=)

Hoping while I am in the waiting room to plan my next 2 weeks worth of dinners, time management in a hurry=)

Hattie you are doing awesome! Keep it up! You inspired me today. I have been feeling out of it since I got back from my cruise on Monday, but reading that you are doing so well has me wanting to do well. I am going to go to the grocery store today and tonight i will prep food for the next couple days! Hope everyone else is hanging in there too! We can do it!

MyBlueIris--I did make the hummus, it was super yummy!!! And I honestly had enough to last me 10 days. I used it with my veggies, but also on sandwhiches is place of mayo/mustard--protein and fiber yes please!!!

When you boil the chickpeas put a teaspoon of baking soda in the water, it makes a HUGE difference.

So when I was at my in-laws this last weekend my mother in-law did something that I am copying. She cut up a bunch of radishes, along with green peppers, and carrots and just put then in a gallon bag in the fridge, then she offered some at every meal, and also as snacks with ranch veggie dip. It was so easy for me to just grab a bowl full.
I grabbed a bunch of radishes yesterday, they were only $.99 per bunch at
target, and just had some with carrots as a side for my lunch. 40 carlories later I am stuffed, I did use some ranch to dip them in, I got the T.Marzetti light, so for 100 calories I guess, but still. Bonus I can knock of 2 more Veggies for the day, and another 4 grams of fiber.

Obviously I am having a great day, I hope you are too!!!

Heading to the store this afternoon to get 2 watermelons, they are only $3 right now, and the family will snack on that with the veggies for the rest of the week. I love how cheap produce gets during this time of year.

Have a great afternoon!!!!!

Hugs,

Hattie

HAT_WRIGHT,

How did the hummus turn out? Did you end up making it? I love hummus, but I haven't made any in months. Not sure how I forgot about how much I love it. Now I will have to get out the food processor and make some! Thanks for inspiring me!

-----

I am just getting started (I've been back at SP for 5 days now) on my weight loss journey again, and the main changes I've made have been to walk more, to drink more water and to eat salads. I'm aiming to eat 5 salads per week and also to eat more fruits and veggies because they fill me up and don't add on a lot of calories.

VioletSummer----Hi! I think most of us have had that minute where we wanted to take the easy route, but here's the thing-----you have to learn how to be healthy before you have the surgery and figure out what got you to where you are now, or else the surgery will just be a short term fix as well. I know SO SO many people who have went through with a surgery, lost a bunch of weight, went back to their old habits and the weight came back on, but they couldn't have a 2nd surgery. SO my advice--don't do it. yes losing weight can be a slow process, but you learn so much about yourself in the end that the journey is worth it. Of course whatever you decide we are here to support you=)

Hey Gang!!

No change from last week, but also no gain. We went on a road trip this past Saturday and ate VERY crappy. I drank a ton of water, and had a healthy breakfast, then a salad with my dinner but that was the end to my healthy eating. Got back o track yesterday though. I am so grateful for no gain=)

So with the 4th coming up we will again be road tripping. Luckily it is just 4 hours away in Urbana, Ill. We will be staying with my in-laws so lots of home made meals, YAY!!! I think they are finally used to my eating style. For the last two years I have brought my own breakfast and snacks with me, as well as tried to prepare at least 1 to 2 dinners while I am there. I also bring one of my water glasses from home, it measures out at 20 ounces, making it easy to get my 120oz in a day. Off to the store today to buy 3 watermelons, taking 1 with us, the other 2 will stay here =) I am also going to make my own hummus before we leave, it will be a great go to snack with veggies.

What is everyone else's plans for the 4th? How are you planning to make it as healthy as possible?

Hey everyone! Back on after the weekend away. I managed to lose 1/2 lb this weekend. YAY! It's practically unheard of for me to lose weight over a weekend. I think this is my 3rd time doing that lol.

I'm off to see my dr today. I did go get a B6/B12 complex that says it converts sugars, carbs and proteins to energy this weekend and maybe that's the reason I lost weight? I certainly didn't have a good food weekend. And the only exercise I got in was an arm workout. I posted about it on Facebook this morning and my cousin told me she takes double the Synthroid that I take, but she also takes a sublingual B complex and 2000 mcg of Chromium each day. She said that really improved her energy right away and without it she'd be 5-7 lbs heavier. So, I'll trust my dr's advice, but I'm curious about all this. Maybe my low energy is because I have a vitamin B and/or Chromium deficiency and once that's under control, the thyroid medication actually works? Who knows...I'm leaving shortly for the appt so I'll update you all tomorrow.

Too much sugar today. I'm trying to eat when I'm hungry, not when society tells me it's meal time. If I'm not hungry at noon, why should I eat, right? Well, today I didn't remember my plan lol. I was hungry at 11. I should have had my lunch then, but instead had some Keebler fudge striped cookies only to realize after the time and regret not eating lunch instead. I'll make it a habit eventually...

I'm pretty excited this week...my friends baby was due Thursday. They did an initial inducting this morning and if that doesn't work they'll induce her at the hospital on Thursday. Problem is she's supposed to be in Alberta on SATURDAY! I do NOT see how that's going to happen. She's supposed to pick up her step kids, then be in her sisters wedding next week. It's a full days drive away. So I keep praying and hoping my phone will go off saying they're on their way to the hospital :)

Hi Ladies!!! I just wanted to do a quick check in before the craziness of my Mondays start.--I take my nieces ages 5,4 and my daughter 11, to the free movies in town. They just had a new baby brother so this gives mommy a break ;)

So I weighed in the AM, and guess what, down 2.8lbs. Looks like I am going to be doing once a week weigh in for a while.

Thanks Zenya for the encouragement. We will all get to where we need to be, sometimes the road is just a slalom course =)

I will Jump back on later, Have an Amazing Monday!

Hugs,

Hattie

Declare, I dont know what you are going through but I know what your daughter is going through. In 2009 I attempted suicide by taking 120 ativan pills. My husband found me and called 911. I was in a coma for a week and when I woke up I was angry that I was still alive. I am bipolar so my life is a constant roller coaster. I will say that it feels like I am a burden. I feel like my husband and family always have to take care of me and their lives revolve around me, that makes it hard. So what would probably help your daughter if she is anything like me is that you take care of yourself, being strong for her means not putting yourself last. Let her know you are there for her but that you also have a life. Sounds hard I know! But you cant help her if you arent in a good place! Send me a private message if you ever want to talk!

Hattie- Thanks for the support! I sabotage myself as well. Everytime something starts to go well I find a way to mess that up. I am working on that with weekly counseling sessions and lots of effort. You realized you are doing it, thats the first step! Then you made a decision to change that! You are on your way and you can do this!

That's great that you had that realization! I weigh in on my Wii Fit and it's a pain to switch over on the t.v. so I only take the time to do it once a week, but when I had a regular digital scale, I would weigh myself all the time. It's easy to become obsessed with the scale. I hope it all works out in your favour!

I also had a realization this week. When I grocery shop on the weekends, it's only enough to get me through to Wed night. Then I'm out of good food. So I'm going back to meal planning Friday nights. I did it for a long time, but then figured I had it down pat and stopped doing it. Obviously, I need to do it again.I'm going out to dinner and a movie with my friend and my daughter tonight to see 22 Jump Street (mmm Channing Tatum) so I'm going to just pretend tonight doesn't happen. I will have water, that's the best I can promise.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Recently I came to the realization that I had been doing some self sabotage. I couldn't figure out what was going on. Not only had I stopped losing, but I was starting to gain as well. Then it hit me.......
I am a person who weighs in daily. I noticed a trend of when I would lose weight, I would allow myself about 300 extra calories that day. Never really being consistent with my food, weigh in.

So Starting this past Monday the 16th, I weighed in, and I haven't weighed in since then. It is KILLING me not to weigh in, as it was part of my morning routine. I am hoping that by just trying to be healthy, track and exercise, that the scale will start moving in the right direction. Cross your fingers and wish me luck, so far it is going good. Tonight was tough, we were invited to a friends for dinner, they served no fruits or veggies, ans the dish was Indian. With Rice, chicken, a sauce, and then you took flat bread, tore it in pieces, and used it to pick up the rest of the meal. It was yummy and interesting. But who knows on the calories! I tried to be conscious of portions, but let's be real--I had no measuring cups.

So that is where I am at=)

2 more appointments with my personal trainer and then I am done YAY!!!! I love him, but he kicks my butt =) Overall he was a good investment, but not something I will be doing again for a while.

Declare74---A child going depression/anxiety is tough. I went through it a few years ago with my son. So glad you are getting help for your daughter, but don't forget to get some help for the rest of the family as well. The attempt and the roller coaster ride effects the whole family. Good job on recognizing the patterns, that is the first step. So glad yo are getting the exercise in, that will help with the stress you are dealing with as well. The only thing I can add is, make sure you are getting those FREGGIES in. Those will also help with combating stress. One of my favorite indulgences is strawberries, with some chocolate syrup, and a bit of whip cream on top. Since it is mainly fruit, it isn't that bad, but I still feed some of my emotions--this is my pamper myself treat, when I need to relax=)

Krissy----Do not go the packaged route if you can help it. Just find 10 small meals that you like and then rotate them. I have 4 go to breakfast, 3 go to lunches, and 10 dinners. I always have the stuff on hand to make them as well. So maybe make out a list of things that you would like to have for each meal, check their calorie range, and adjust accordingly.

Zenya---So I want to tell you, that yesterday you inspired me. I had worked out super hard on Tuesday and was kinds sore, so last night my plan was to eat a healthy dinner and skip the gym. Well I read your post, realized it was Wednesday--the only night my gym offers aqua zumba, grabbed my gym bag, water bottle, & a bag of grapes, and was out the door. I ended up not only doing 45 minutes of the Zumba, but also 15minutes on the bike as well, since I got there early enough=) So thank you!!!!

Krissy - I am not an expert but Making up your own small meals will be A) cheaper and B) healthier as many of the prepackaged meals have a lot off unwanted additives and artificial ingredients but are also really high in sodium etc ...

I know Larry North used to have a program of 5-6 small balanced meals and I did it in my early teens with good results ... but it was all real food and I don't recall it taking much time to prepare if you plan your grocery trip well :-)

I would try googling Larry North or "6meals a day" or something to get a few tips to meal suggestions and maybe just keep some of those convenience meals as a back up

MOM - thanks for your support - it means a lot to be able to vent here and get advice from the great group of SP friends I have

hello everyone I have a question for any and all opinions I am going to work on having the 6 small meals a day so if I just buy them already made meals like ww and such will that provide all the nutrients I need? or is there a better way to get what I need out of the meals but stay with the 6 small meals?

Declare- my heart goes out to you and your daughter. To feel like that's the only option- that things will never get better. I had thoughts of that when I was younger but never went that far. And as a mom now I can't even imagine the pain you feel. l hope she gets better soon and realizes that things will get better, whatever the problem is emoticon

Hi all - Zenya your trip sounds like just what you need to chill out and regroup hope it is the springboard of a more positive time for you

Mom - glad your health is improving but when we are sick I think we all need to dial it back in order to heal/recover so glad you listened to your body

Life is pretty hectic in my neck of the woods, my daughter who attempted suicide a few weeks ago and is having pretty intensive therapy and a complete overhaul of her life is a bit like a roller coaster at the moment huge highs and major dips and well the rest of us to a certain extent feel pretty powerless and yet are on the ride with her ... and well it has brought me back to emotional eating and all that entails - eat a pile of rubbish, then feel guilty so don't eat, then feel hungry and eat something healthy but then have another melt down and eat rubbish and then not eat ... you know the cycle... so I am taking it a day at a time and just trying to focus on completing each day within calorie range and with my hour exercise each day ... calorie range is not going well but at this stage is stopping me "blowing out" completely and also stopping me "guilting myself into starving myself" so progress but a long way to go before me and the family are really back to where we were and where we want to be

Zenya,

Enjoy your trip and use the time while there to relax, and get some rest. If you have the time, take a journal with you, and write about what is really bothering you, and what you would like to change. You will find that there are some things you can't, let them go, even throw that piece of paper in the ocean=)
Then focus on the things you can, make a plan, and start with two things a week, you will get there---Just believe that you will.

Hugs,
Hattie

I stayed home from work yesterday due to a migraine and I did what I always do when I'm home. Binge eat/ I was so ashamed that I didn't even track it. I also skipped out on aqua zumba. Now I am at work and feeling extra motivated again, which always happens when I sit at work and research super foods, and fitness goals. I need to somehow keep that going when I get home. I find that after a grueling day at work ( I am a social worker) I am too exhausted to do anything except sit on my sofa and play online games. This month I have been going to Aqua Zumba on Tuesdays, it's fun and low impact on my knees and I hope to up it to 2 days a week in July. I need someone who can help keep me in check, text me throughout the day to help keep me motivated and share tips with. I want to lose about 200 lbs. I am at my heaviest ever and it has gotten out of hand! I am going on a cruise in a couple weeks and I have been stressing on if I will fit in the small state room and be able to shower comfortablly. Maybe I am just stressing for no reason, but this is the kind of stuff that I get anxiety over, almost every day of my life. Another reason I have to do something about this weight! Ok sorry for venting, I just feel like no one really understands when I try to explain it to them.

Iím doing ok. I was very sick almost all of last week so I didnít exercise but just a little. Iím trying to get back into the swing of things this week. I can say I didnít eat horribly last week though. Eating too much has always been my biggest problem. Iím trying hard to start eating more vegetables and drink more water. I bought an eggplant yesterday, I donít know what Iím going to do with it yet, got to find a recipe. Iím going to try a new vegetable every week! I like how youíre keeping busy after dinner so you donít snack! I need to do that as well.

How is everyone doing? Being a very wet winter here I have been struggling to get my exercise in and also tend to be heading to the pantry in the evening so the rest of this month my focus is real simple - home gym exercise routine before I even enter the lounge after work so I don't put it off (yes I know I will put it off till eventually its 2-3 days without doing it if I don't commit to doing it straight away - it is one of the only reasons I was happy to pay for a gym membership before) and no more snacking after dinner - so scrapbooking supplies have been stocked up and my anti-snacking hobby has taken over the lounge again :-)

Last month was really hard . I didn't do that good. I feel like it was kind of a way for my body to re set itself. I didn't blow it or go way over board . I just didnt do as well as I could have. Anyway off to a way better start for this month.

Today marked my first complete week using Sparkpeople trackers for food and fitness and I am happy to report I lost 7 pounds!! Finally I am within my scale's range lol :-) So I did mess up yesterday and went over my calories because I had company and ate before I logged it (then to my surprise I had eaten 1400 calories in one meal), but luckily it was all healthy foods (just too much)! So I have a binging problem where I can't seem to stop eating until I feel sick to my stomach and nothing else will fit. So this week I have been eating a lot of fruit and veggies that I feel it's "ok" to binge on and tracking it on sparkpeople before I ate helped me not totally overdo it. Also eating only unprocessed food leaves me feeling satisfied quicker (who'da thought lol) and I don't get cravings barely at all. I have been walking my dog for 50 minutes daily too. So I just wanted to share my first week's success and hopefully this week will be just as great! My goal (maybe wishful thinking, but a goal nonetheless) is to get under 300 by July 1st. I know that's a lot but I have been drinking so much water, I'm hoping the weightloss will snowball (avalanche?). I appreciate everyone else's comments on their experience, I seriously read everything I can on this site while I'm at work to keep myself focused!

So I rejoined about 2-4 weeks ago and made a couple SparkBuddies. Then I proceeded to get our family ready for vacation. I have to admit, I ate healthy foods/watched portions the entire trip. I don't think I over did it at all, especially considering I spent three full days walking around Disney parks with my family. Lots of walking, standing in lines (moving/fidgeting/stretching), a couple buffets---one of which I might not have completely behaved myself, but not concerned.
I had a shock prior to vacation, stepped on the scale and it read 291....9 lbs higher than my most recent weigh in (prior to yesterday). I was appalled. I put in some activity prior to leaving and ran errands, etc., but came home this week--weighing 284 which I count as a success since I was gone over a week. Daytona Beach was sun, more walking, and obviously eating, but I made good choices and didn't take advantage of the "all you care to eat" aspect of any buffets we ran into.
Friday I took the hubby and five kids to a local U-Pick for strawberries and we ended up with 38 lbs of them. I figure I will make a couple strawberry "pies" (bought graham cracker crust and will use that instead of cheesecake or yellow cake mix). I would like to say that wise choices are a constant, but cannot yet. I think we have put an emphasis on food and eating well since a brief time of financial strife early on in our marriage. Funds were limited and sometimes paying the bills resulted in small grocery trips. We got our priorities in line and then some, so part of it...can be blamed on that, but by no means am I making excuses for my rampant disregard for personal health.
I'm sitting here on my very sore behind, with a kink in my neck due to sleeping across the end of twin beds (my 6 yr olds had their first sleepover with a friend and needed me in there because for some reason "big foot" came up)...LOL. I ate Raisin Bran today and had a bottled water, so I'll probably just have a couple ibuprofen and try to relieve it.
I know this is random and long-winded, but I am finding I need support and reassurance. I can't get that from a personal journal blank page/screen. Hope you don't mind me going on (and on). Thanks and have a wonderful weekend, or what's left of it.

Thank you for the information. It's just good to know that the frustration will be alleviated eventually, lol. I never really have trouble with eating the wrong things or over eating, except during holidays, my problem is stress. I have learned that I need to stop putting everything on myself and just be responsible for my family and myself only. It has been much better since then and now I can say no, that's a big step. Thank you again.

Thanks,
Trix

I feel your pain...my stomach is the biggest thing on me. It's bulbous. And everywhere I go I see peoples eyes drift down to my stomach and it makes me feel horrible. I'm a partner in a successful business and it's the first thing people see when they meet me. It makes me look and feel unprofessional, when everything else about me is the opposite of what they see.

From what I read, there are no exercises that will target body fat. And kinesiology teaches us that the body loses weight from the extremities in. So eventually our bodies will be forced to use our torso fat for food. I do know though that when I exceed 8 waters a day, I lose water weight and that translates to looser underwear and shorts and pants. I know it's so frustrating....we can't see immediate results...but slow and steady truly does win the race.

Are there other non scale related victories you can report? Making more good decisions than bad, no longer craving something, finding exercise easier...we need to find success and victory in other things until it shows up the things that we see with our eyes.

Hope all are doing great. I haven't been on here for a while but I am back and happy to be.

I am really trying hard to lower the size on my stomach. It seems I loose everywhere else but there. Don't know if I am doing the right exercises for that area. Does anyone have suggestions that are working for them that might help me? Anything will help.

Thanks,
Trix

emoticon SWEETPEA!!! 4 lbs is a big deal. That's half a newborn baby that takes 20 weeks to grow right? LOL

A minor crisis on a job site derailed my water efforts today. Driving for 2.5 hours for a deadline meant that I did not have time to keep stopping to pee. Hopefully I can make up some ground tomorrow.

Tonight I'm taking my daughter out for dinner. She's been under a HUGE amount of stress at school. Just a few days left but our teachers are on strike here coupled with a lockout and I had words with her Humanities teacher this morning over a project. She says they had 3 months to do it, but failed to mention that while she gave them the outline 3 months ago, she took it back immediately and didn't give it back until 2 weeks ago. Half the class isn't finished it, including my daughter despite the late nights. I fail to see how it's fair to give students 2 weeks to complete a project that is in lieu of a final exam AND accounts for 10% of the semester grade. Anyway....relaxing dinner out tonight...absolutely no "super project" talk at all. Thursday is their scheduled strike day so she has the day to work on it before presenting on Friday.

I'm so behind on my kitchen and laundry it's making me super stressed so after dinner, I'll be tackling the kitchen and laundry! I may have time to get in an arm workout as well. Have a good night everyone!

what a great idea about the vase, pebbles and butterflies. I'll have to think of a reward along those lines for me.

I am feeling so good about myself right now. I know its silly but I have lost 4 pounds! Not a lot I know but it is to me. I joined sp back in January and got off track. June 1st I started over saying to myself I am going to get this weight off. Well today I weighed myself to find I have lost 4 pounds!! So proud of myself and just hope I keep it up from here and not gain. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Good idea to focus on NSV. I don't lose ever week, but I feel good if I stuck to my plan. Never thought about having those as part of my rewards.

Oh No hypothyroidism is something which I suffer from but luckily I am not even on medication anymore as I have maintained for the last 6mths .2 above the level requiring treatment ... of course this means my thyroid function is still very low but I am using a natural thyroid support (capsules) and taking iodine - I hope you can find a solution soon

Maybe instead of focusing on the scales you can reward good eating habits or good exercise ??

I love the idea of rewards, but I've been gaining for over a year so I've never met any :( Still trying to find a hypothyroidism treatment that works for me. I was sure this dosage would, but it isn't having the desired effect. I'm going to give some thought to rewards tonight.

MetalJen - I am a big believer in rewards for meeting goals - I have not been able to convince anyone else to reward me though :-) so I will continue to reward myself - I also track my success with a vase on my kitchen windowsill with glass pebbles in it for every kg lost a pebble goes in and every 10kgs I add a pretty ornamental butterfly on a wire stick - I am working on my third butterfly at the moment but hope to hit butterfly number 5 by the end of the year :-)

I have been struggling a little due to some family dramas but seem to be coming out the other side and finding my focus again

For my husband to motivate me I made a list of things I really wanted. Some very small like a hair cut. The biggest was a trip to Disney World at Christmas time. He agreed to fulfill the list as I lose. So I gave each item a goal weight. There is no punishment for not doing it other than I have to wait longer for the things on my list.

It is very motivating to work towards positive goals.

I know how you feel, I love exercising I just have a problem doing it consistently- I have two young kids and things often come up and that's a big part of the problem.

I also am struggling with moderation. Just keep trying! I am going to try to start drinking a lot more water and cut out the sodas. I have never been a soda drinker until the past few months, now I feel like I have to have a coke or Dr pepper everyday and sometimes twice in a day. I'm also going to make it a priority to walk at least 30 mins a day. Once I get that down I think my next change will be to only eat at certain times because I found I snack too much throughout the day.

I'm trying to get myself to understand i like the fitness. when i do it i feel better for doing and it boosts my moods. now i just need to figure out when to consistently do my workout.. i get ruffled when i get up too late or people around when i want to do it. Also want to figure out how not to give in to my impulses when shopping... food i don't plan on eating seems to come home with me every time, and its not bad in moderation... but i'm still struggling with that moderation bit.. i seem to be working on things in bits and pieces but i'm not putting them all together to make it a cohesive change in lifestyle...

I wouldn't make exercise a punishment. In some small way, it will make you feel like its a bad thing to exercise. I would maybe add household chores.

So my husband said to the other night that he wants to help me any way he can to loose the weight i have been working on. I came to him after much thought and said how bout i get a $1 for every pound I loose. he asked how it would work,

My thoughts on how this work, to start on June 1, measure my food, water and unsweet tea, exercise and walking daily ( he will make me). step on the scale on monday morning after awaking up. track weights. at end of month i get $$ for each pound lost.

?? Here is were we need suggstions. If i gain weight what should be the consiquence? my husband says tht if i can wait during a week i should double the exercise for the next week,

May I have some thoughts and suggestions please

Since I started actually paying close attention to my body more than to my taste buds I have made a big change in my attitude towards food, I sometimes eat that extra item if I am really hungry, but I plan a whole lot better, I do not let the little bumps on the road kill all my work I have done, I know I have a long road ahead because I do not take medication for my thyroid and I have a knee injury , but I do not let that stop me. I still have managed to lose a pound a week which is great considering a yr ago that is what i was gaining every week, I am living proof that you can change the thyroid issues by eating healthy and living healthy. I never thought I could actually get off those thyroid pills, I am so thankful that I came across this site, I did not use it at first but gave into the idea that to live a long time , I have to eat like I want to live a long time, no canned foods, no fast foods, and no food in a box. I love the support and articles on this website. Thank you sparkle people for doing what you do.

Thank you all. Until I started on this healthier life style I ate whatever I wanted when I wanted. I think alot of it was having cheesecake and other foods . Now i do few a far between. I don't think I could make this last unless I can go to family function or special occasions and not feel deprived. It makes it easier to keep going and making it a lifestyles change.

Eating at a family celebration is okay. There's family, there's food, it's time to make all the old favorite complicated recipes and enjoy them together....it's when you're eating like that all day every day that it becomes a problem. I hope you had a wonderful Easter and enjoyed spending it withi your daughter!

LessCupcakes ----I love the name by the way=)

It is so great that your daughter recognized your accomplishment!!!! Sometimes not seeing people who we haven't seen in a while, and their reaction to our new bodies is the best feeling.
I know I am my own worst critic, so I love when others critique me=)

I have come to the conclusion that family events normally equal one pound, but that is ok with me, since that pound means I have enjoyed my time with my family and friends. I track on my phone during family events, and the only thing I will whip out a measuring device for is the dressings, and I only choose the stuff that I REALLY like. I learned to no longer eat something just to make sure I don't step on someones toes.
If I do get asked why, I tell them it isn't in my calorie budget. That normally is the end of it, but I inspired my family to start making healthier dishes. Gone are the fruit salads with whip cream marshmallows and sauce, now you see a simple bowl of fresh mixed fruit. Yay!!!!

Hugs to you,

Hattie

Lesscupcakes you should focus on the things that you did right, instead of focusing on all you ate. If you tracked your food, that is great! Being able to see what choices you made so you can look back and make different choices next time is important. Also keep in mind that a pound is 3500 calories. You probably didn't eat that much really. If the scale reflects more than you ate, it might be water weight due to the high sodium in processed foods. Might even be better to wait a few days to weigh yourself so you get a realistic idea of what damage you really did. Just for sure don't dwell on the mistake because you're more likely to feel bad and eat more. I tell myself "oh well" and move on when stuff like that happens.

I just feel like I went way over on food yesterday.I must keep going im sure I didn't put back on 50 pds in one day. Hope everyone had a good Easter.

YEs it is a snowball method, but the setup is different than most. Here is how it works;
First make a list of each of your debts with the amount that is owed, and the minimum payment.
Then for each debt divide the amount owed by the minimum payment. Then after you have done that for each debt. Put your debts in order starting with the one with the lowest number of payments. That is you bite/payoff order. SO any extra money goes toward #1 on your list, while still making the minimum payment on the rest. Then once you pay the first one off, the payment for number one gets rolled into the #2, and so on until all of them are payed. You are making the same amount of payment each month, it just gets rolled into the next debt.

I went through and setup a payment plan with EVERY DEBT we had medical, collections, all of it. I made payment arrangements where needed but, I will be debt free. It will require a bit of dedication, but my hubby and I are doing it together.

I resisted getting my taxes done by a professional for years. The last couple years I got my taxes done and it was totally worth the money- less money but less stress and time also.

I'll have to check out the debt buster program you mentioned. It's depressing to think of all the money in interest payments could be in a saving account if you could just eliminate debt. Good luck on the program! Is the program a debt snowball type of plan?

Ughhhh, I wish you could burn more calories by using your brain. I literally sat for almost 8 hours doing taxes and budget work. I have a monster headache, and am super bumbed I didn't make it to the gym. But I got to a point where I just wanted to be done. I am 95% done, looking forward to being completely done by this Friday. I have to say I am excited though about the new Debt Buster program I started, looking forward to being debt free. It will take 5 years to be completely debt free--school loans--but I will get there, and having a plan makes a huge difference.

Hi Gang!!!

I have to say I LOVE tortilla pizzas, we do them a lot for lunch. I have found a 100 calorie tortilla at Dollar Tree of all places. I put on a little olive oil, tomatoes 1/4 mozz cheese, and italian seasoning. Then I have either a bowl of fresh veggies, or salad on the side. We do this for lunch a LOT since I home-school. It's quick, easy and yummy=)

No movement on the scale for me this week, but I expected as much. I hosted a baby shower yesterday, complete with cream cheese mints and chocolate dipped strawberries.. We also had little deli sandwhiches, veggie cups, and fresh fruit. Along with spinach dip and potato chips, and cupcakes. It wasn't too horrible but between the punch and the mints, I am sure I overdid it. Oh Well, it was fun, and totally worth the splurge.

I am already back on track today, have already done a 15 minute walk with the puppies, and had a healthy breakfast. I also planned out all my dinners for the next two weeks last Friday, and shopped for all of them, so I have it all on hand. Other than a milk/fruit run, I won't have to go to the store for 2 weeks. I am thinking I may just send my hubby, as I can't resist the bakery goods=)

This week I am dealing with a sensitive tooth, I need a root canal--I did go to the dentist---but they don't have any opening until May!!!!!!!!!!! I am on a call list in case someone cancels. This has been really hard, as I can't eat/drink anything too cold. this morning I even microwaved my fruit, and am drinking luke warm water--yuck! But it is the only way I can possible get my water in.

Nikki: i will have to give that a try. I usually just use a wheat pizza and that takes care of everyone in the house. Last pizza I made I created my own pesto sauce and topped with red onions, mushrooms, roma tomato and black olives. It was soooo freeking good.

Mizzfit, a friend just told me about pizza on tortillas, and they are DIVINE. And so much better for you than regular pizza! Just heat up a tortilla on a cookie pan under the broiler until it's a little crunchy, 1-2 minutes, then top like a pizza. I used some spaghetti sauce that was open, measured out my cheese, then some turkey pepperoni, onions and banana peppers. Then pop back under the broiler for another 5 or so minutes. The best part is everyone can decorate the way they want, so for seconds I added more veggies and less cheese. So good!

I did gain this week, but it's nobody's fault but my own. I have already been better about food and exercising, and I'm determined to show a loss next
Friday!

Nicki: I want to say time for a new scale. I decided this week what ever the scale says the first time to stick with it.
My scale when I step on it will say the same thing twice but that third time it jumps either a pound up or down. I have no clue if it is how I step or where I step on it.
Have you tried difference recipes to make? I know if I'm eating the same type of thing it get boring. I chance up my menu to fit things I want to eat for that week and find healthy verisions so I don't get tempted to have a bad week.
Only thing I miss is a nice big juicy hamburger that has onion (grilled), thousand island dressing and cheese. mmmmm
Turkey burger comes close but not quite the same. Lean beef is the closes I can get to healthy on this but it is more pricy.

*note to self, burgers on the menu this week. emoticon

Karri: I feel the same way. Sick, not eating much and when I ate eatting badly. I'm not expecting much with weigh in tomorrow.

I'm nervous about weigh in tomorrow too. I've been exercising a lot (yay, spring!) but I have also been eating a lot and not always making the best choices. If I don't lose or stay the same, this will be the first time with two weeks gaining. I'm worried that two months into this weight loss epic, I'm getting tired of being the one on the diet. I've been out of sorts this week and just cranky in general. I tried to push that into exercising, but I also reached for some old comfort foods. Oh well! We'll see tomorrow, I guess.

I stayed the same so I can't complain about that. All I can do is make this week a better one! :)

My weigh-in is at 5:15 this evening and I, too, am dreading it! I know that I did my best as far as eating has gone. That's where I am at: what goes in my mouth and is not burned by exercise, shows on the scale!

I'm kind of dreading weigh in tomorrow because I haven't eaten great and I'm feeling all out of whack with this terrible head cold. But I'm also looking at it as an opportunity to really start over no matter what the scale says.

Welcome DEERIKA!!!!

I have to say I know all about 'draw' weeks. I ended up getting a new scale, and that has made all the difference.

So I know I talked about changing my calories to 1450 daily--but I will only be doing it twice a week, as I think it is too little calories for my activity level.

On another note--I just tried PB2--powdered PB, found it at Walmart, sooooo good. I will be totally adding it to my shakes in the morning, and I am going to try a few recipes with it too.

Have a great day all!

hey guys, new here but lost 100 pounds before, I am learning not to depend on the scale so much as to what my body is telling me. I have a so called bad thyroid but do not take the medication and managed to lose 7 pounds the first week, I still look at it, but avoid doing the judging me off of it because I know the work I put in will pay off, I just do not pay too much attention to the numbers each week. I like to look at monthly more than weekly, it will save you a whole lot of heart ache. I weigh every week but the number that matters is the monthly one to me so if i lose 6 pounds, that is 6 pounds I know I can say goodbye to. hope this helps .

Last Friday I got on the scale and it said 248 which was a shock because I'd been pretty bad with the snacking...so I got on it again and it said 253...then I was horrified so I tried it a third time and it said 251, which is what it was last week. I think I muttered something like "let's call this week a draw" and slunk off to record "no change." And that was in the span of 5 minutes!

As we can tell by the responses, scale habits vary from person to person. But if I can offer any advice..if your not sure where you fall on the scale habits, try something different for a few days.
Hopefully you will find a system that works best for you.

Great day on the scale for me, 243.6 a number I haven't seen in quite a while.

So after review of my weights and eating/exercise habits these last 2 months, I have decided to move my calorie count from 1600 to 1450 for the month of April I think I will have quicker results. Then I will reevaluate May 1st.

Have a great day all!
