If you can get good support from this meeting, then go. Otherwise, try to get your money back because to me she was being misleading by not telling you upfront what this group is really about. If you feel more pressure and no support, and she won't give or you don't want to ask...just skip it. It isn't worth the pressure. As far as not getting enough protien, I'm looking into ways to get it, but nothing gimmicky. Also, fruit isn't high is calories. I had a half a cup of pinapple today at only 70 calories and a small pre-sliced bag of apples...only 30 calories. That's crap for her to say so!

Just another lil note...you can get protein powder to make shakes anywhere. I have looked at it at Wal Mart and it was like $15 for a huge tub. I would love to know what that Herbalife distributor would have to say about that. I'm sure Herbalife has "blahty-blah and blohty-bloh in it that make it sooo much better" according to them. Protein can be a very important part of a weight loss regimen, but NOT to the tune of $180 a month!

Omgosh I have a friend who just recently told me he was doing this Herbalife weight loss program- from what he said he drinks like 2 or 3 protein type drinks for breakfast - then has lunch- then has the same drinks for dinner- I can't be sure of all the details b/c the whole time he was talking I was just thinking no no no! LOL

Like so many other plans of that nature the weight just comes back when you stop the program and begin to eat real food again- and any program that completely excludes an entire food group is wrong imo.

I really encourage you to do more than stick it out. Be the one that leads the pack in results but not money spent! That would really be a great motivator for me. To be in a group of people with the same goals and being the 1 person to take the sane (non Herbalife) route. You can do this!!! Take the bull by the horns and show them how it's done (without protein shakes)!!!

Hi,

I just want to echo what everyone else has said so far. Stay away if possible or at least do more research.

It sounds like you're doing pretty good without it though and you definitely have the right mind set for losing weight (ie it's not about the 'how fast', it's about the 'how').

Fruit is great for weight loss. It's silly to exclude fruit in total (although I can see how some may want to exclude certain fruits due to sugar/fiber content).

Again, best of luck in your journey.

I'd rather see you eat 5 pounds of apple slices than take herbalife. At least we know what's in the apples. At least it's been medically proven apples are good for you.

Thank you all for your honest answers. I had a gut feeling this is the truth. Something inside my head and my heart told me no, heck no. I don't like to buy things unless I have proof. I have no proof about this one. What did I get myself into? I'll stick it out though. I am in it until July. I have enough will power in me to say no. If I arm myself with great information and an awesome support group I will be alright.

Class action suits, oh thats bad. Especially when it comes to a vital organ. I have had kidney problems last year. I have learned a lot since then and I am still still learning. Thank you all for the great support and answer to my question.

This is what triggered me in the first place. the fact I couldn't have fruit while taking the drug, or whatever. I gotta have my fruit. Its my addiction. Also the fact that no exercise involved. It sounds lovely, but at what expence. I can't afford that.

My husband is a doctor and sees people lose weight on Herbalife, but as soon as they get off it they gain weight back. He DOES NOT recommend it (or any other weight loss pill/shake/vitamin) in any way, shape or form. It must have high doses of caffeine or something in it to suppress the appetite.

The absolute best thing you can do is to follow sparkpeople's plan. It is well balanced, healthy and realistic. And free of course.

All you have to do is ask the Herbalife salesperson about their medical training or background. If they don't have any (or even if they do), tell them you need to check with your doctor before changing your diet in anyway.

Please please don't be discouraged because of this. Sparkpeople has so much online here--we are here for you! Use the other group if you need 'real life' support, but be assured that no one here at sparkpeople is promoting anything other than healthy living.

Okay...I would ask you this: Do you plan and intend to keep doing the Herbalife program she's recommending for the REST OF YOUR LIFE?? The way I see it, if it works you will have to continue it forever. Because what will happen when you stop it?? That's right...you will pack all the pounds back on. So for me it's not a matter of whether it works or not, but is it the long-term solution for your weight problem? And if I were you I would say "NO!".

You definitely sound like you are so very much on the right track all on your own! If your way is working, keep it up! Anyone that would tell you to stop eating fruit...well...they are just nutty to me! She's telling you whatever she thinks she needs to in order to get you buying. If you told her what you are doing and that it's working, she certainly can't say "Oh, well if that works, keep at it!" cuz if she tells you that you def won't buy any of her "product". So she has to try and pick apart your HEALTHY way of doing this to sell you something.

Like others said, look how often it eventually comes back that diet drugs are actually harmful. Who knows what's in the stuff and what it can do. Supplements are not regulated by the govt so the manufacturers can basically put in whatever they want. That's too big a risk to take.

I am doing well this time around...for once! But I have changed my whole way of thinking about this process. I used to focus on how much I had to lose and how quickly I could get it done. I would tell myself "Ok, you just have to 'suffer' for this long to get to the weight you want." I don't truly know what I thought I would do once I got to that dream weight! I can tell you what: I would have put it all back on. I know now that this has to be a LIFESTYLE. I am NOTNOTNOTNOT on a DIET. Diets are for those folks who want to lose 5-10 lbs before their class reunion or wedding. I have over 100 lbs to lose. I have made gaining weight a lifestyle. Now I have to make losing and then maintaining a healthy weight my lifestyle. I am eating like a NORMAL, healthy person now. And if I choose to be a normal, healthy weight I will have to eat like this for the rest of my life. Taking some kind of herbal thing might speed up the process to get to the end result, but what then?

You are doing fine on your own and sound like you have a great plan. Stick to it and tell em to take their "quick fix" rip-off to some other sucker!

Herbalife is nothing more than a mass marketing plan. She's trying to get you to buy stuff you don't want or need. The more she sells the more money she gets. Eventually she's going to try to bring you on as a seller as well.

The FDA is currently doing an investigation into Herbalife-they are looking into claims that it is harmful to the liver.

As recently as 2004 Herbalife was invovled in a class action suit on behalf of 8700 current and former salespeople. The 8700 claimed Herbalife was nothing more than a pyramid scheme. $6 million was split between the 8700 salespeople with Herbalife never admitting to any wrong doing.

Currently there's 2 other class action lawsuits going on against Herbalif for fraudulent and pushy sales tactics.

You'll have better luck at loosing weight-in a healthy and safe manner-and keep it off-by leaning on us here at spark people and taking our advice and support.

Dear M -

Run, do not walk, as fast as you can away from this program!!! I am no expert, but everything they are telling you seems wrong and backwards to me...plus, it seems that they have an underlying motivation which requires you to purchase their product (BTW, this product has been around for a very long time and it is a waste of your hard earned $$ - my parents used to sell it, so I know firsthand) The healthiest and best way to lose weight, is good old-fashioned diet and exercise. It is not necessarily popular because it is hard work, but it is the best and safest way to lose weight. There are many so-called shortcuts out there, but in the end, they always fail or catch up to you in the long run...Try to eat lean sources of protein (you need this for energy and to build muscle which also burns fat) and several servings of fruits and vegetables daily. You are doing the right thing and need to keep up with your eating breakfast and your healthy snacking between meals or you could even do healthy mini-meals if you wanted. This will keep your blood sugar stable and prevent you from "starving" and thus grabbing the wrong things in a weak moment. Exercise is equally important and it can even help you burn calories afterwards when you are "resting". I hope this helps and I will be cheering for you - I have 126lbs to lose and I have found that by doing the things I mentioned above, I feel better, sleep better, and am starting to look better. This is a journey and we just need to take it one day at a time. Day after day of making healthy choices and taking better care of our bodies will yield the results we are looking for. It will take awhile, but you will get there - Don't give up!!! If you still need inspiration, look on this site or think about all the folks from The Biggest Loser and how far they have come - if they can do it, so can we!!!

She is selling the dream. Herbalife has been around along time, my mom used to buy it. However, times are hard right now, she makes money off this, so of course she will say whatever she has been told by the company to make the sale.

My opinion is stick with what mother earth gave us. Perhaps she has a multivitamin you might purchase, if it would make you feel more comfortable going to the meetings, having made a purchase.

Not to say the products are bad, but telling someone not to eat fruit is horrible. What about fiber? It is important and fruit has fiber, and is very satisfying.

Best Wishes. emoticon

If the reason for this challenge was for her to sell Herbalife than it is a conflict of interest. She should have said "This is an Herbalife meeting" not a weight loss challenge. I don't know much about Herbalife. I know people who have lost weight using it, but the weight can come back on if you don't watch it, as we all know. I also know they have some good products from talking to people who used it, but I don't know which ones are good and which ones aren't as good. Of course that can depend on the person, too.

I hate pushy sales people. I don't buy anything from pushy sales people. I sell Mary Kay, but I show it and if they want to buy it great, if not, I don't push them. If you can't afford $180 a month you can't afford it. Right now I can't put out an extra $180 a month, my washer died and I'm afraid my dish washer is next.

You know that a balanced diet will help you lose weight. Do you want to lose it slow and steady and have a greater chance of keeping it off, or do you want to lose it quickly with a great chance of it coming back on? Do what feels right to you.

Be encouraged because I don't trust all this stuff they have out here either. If you notice a lot of the stuff they advertise for weight loss is called back cause it causes problems. The safest thing to do is just what you are doing eating fruits and vegetables. The best way is as raw as you can.

I recently joined a weight loss challenge in my home town. It started May 7 and ends JUly 31. However, I have some apprehensions about this weight loss challenge. I prefer to lose weight by working out and eating fruit and veggies. Eating basically healthy. I don't believe in protein shakes to lose weight. Maybe I am wrong in that assumption. Here is what I mean.

I went to the first meeting and committed to it. It cost $39.00 to join. No big deal I thought because some of the process fees end up going to camp for obese children and awareness. Not a problem. My problem is this. the person administrating this challenge is selling a health food supplement called Herbalife. I don't know much about it. So I agreed to meet with her.

She told me of the program. She told me that to maintain a health weight you have to be one this program for life. "to maintain," she says. The program she picked out for me is $180.00 a month. Something I can't afford and I told her this. She insists that's the only way I am going to lose weight. Then she asks me what I eat for a whole day.
I told her. She said there isn't much protein in it. She said red meat and poultry aren't the only source of protein. I said I know.

For lunch I usually will have a grilled chicken sandwich or ham or something like that. Sometimes pasta, but not a lot. I also told her that for snacks I eat either an apple or some kind of fruit. Or perhaps peanuts. Something to get me by until lunch hits.

I eat breakfast at 6:45am. MY lunch isn't until 1:30. I have to eat something in between then. That's to long without food. She continue to tell me that fruit is not a good choice because they are to high in calories. I should have a protein shake instead. Bottom line is that I should refrain from eating my color wheel a day and focus on this so called weight loss wonder drug.

I told her that I can't have caffeine or very little caffeine. She says take caffeine anyways. Its a food allergy. Its something I can't ignore. She didn't even stress anything about exercise. Hmmm...Is this drug true to what it stands for. It doesn't sound to healthy to me. Maybe it is, I don't know.

I left all confused. I don't know what to believe. I believe my heart and my head to tell me there are better ways then losing weight. Do I believe her that fruit is to high in calories and just give them up. Do I believe that protein, is the way to go. What about exercise? Isn't that important.

I went to the next meeting and I lost 3 pounds. I am doing it by the way I have always thought it best. Should I keep doing it this way or not? The other people in this weight loss challenge has lost staggering amongst of weight so far. One lost 14 pounds on these drugs. Is that healthy?

I seem like a weight loss virgin here. I have about 140 pounds to lose and I don't know where to actually start or actually believe. I am lost.

or

even-through anything that happens. That joy cannot 'Come'

to you

ever. It emantes from the formless dimention 'Within You',
