No pants size is ever exact. Depends on the companies anyways. I can wear a 12 in most companies but some 12's are to lose or to tight. Main if you really wanna see if you drop sizes. I would stick with the same JEAN brand when trying on pants to determine if you did lose a couple or even one pants size. I've gotten to wear I hate trying on clothes because I'll grab 12's in one brand name and then in another. One fits the other doesnt. It's http://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_me
ssageboardpost.asp#stupid. So, I never go by that number. Only inches lost in my waist area and where the pants hug. Just my thoughts.

Small achievements mean the world because its those small achievements that bring on the big ones!!!!-ME

One summer ( when I was in high school) I lost around 40 lbs and went down 2 sizes. It really just depends on how you re built and where the weight comes from.

Like the sparker below, I have huge legs, so that's my first consideration when buying pants. I can't really wear shorts because I am so uncomfortable in them because I think they dig in when I sit down.

As much as I would like to say that I don't worry about size, I do. It sucks that I can lose a lot of weight and only go down two sizes. But at the same time, I would rather wear 12 and look good in it than try to squeeze into a 10 and have a muffin top (or leg roll).

I can go down easier around my waist than with my hips and thighs. I'm hoping with this running the C25K will trim down my legs. I have to wear slightly bigger pant size just so my legs will fit in to them, but they are a little big around my waist. It is so terribly difficult to find pants that fit me right. That's why I HAVE to wear low rise jeans or "hip huggers" because they tend to fit better, but still a little tight around my thighs. it's so annoying! My shirt is typically about 2 sizes smaller than my pant size. It's not only with jeans, it's also with shorts. Shorts are even worse because I feel like they cut in to my legs, but they are big around my waist! Ugh!

Great thread!

I'm 5'6 and started at 188 pounds and in a size 12. I'm now down 15 pounds and in between a 10 and a 12.

I carry my weight very proportiate, therefore, I think it's going to take me more than 10 or even 15 pounds to lose a full dress size.

I wouldn't go by pounds but maybe by inches lost. You can lose 10lbs but not lose many inches as someone who is hitting the gym harder and gaining muscle which makes u leaner. Hope that helps. I figure 2-3 inches might make a pant size but Im guessing could be wrong..

The whole size thing annoys me. I try to say "Oh size doesn't matter, long as you look good." But I am sick of being in double digits. I've been wearing the same size 12 jeans for the past 20lbs lost. (Truth be told, they're probably not *real* size 12's. They're probably stretched out.) I cannot wait to drop a size.

I understand and can emphathize with all of you on this. I think we all just lose weight differently, for me I first notice it in my face and my feet of all places!! Of course I'd much rather see it lost in my gut, butt and chest but I'll take what I can get!

I'm having the same issue! It's really depressing! I started at 168- and am down to 159 and my pants are just as tight as they were when I started! I've had a few people comment that I look like I've lost weight but I don't know WHERE they're seeing it?!! :(

Ugh - I feel like it is taking me forever to go down a pants size! I just wanted to say that everyone has a lot of great points about going down a pant size. Personally, I really do feel that it is more about exercising and toning your muscles (thus losing inches) to go down a size. The scale was barely moving, but I noticed that my pants were getting bigger. I guess we can't just go by the scale alone??

Only 2 pant sizes?!? I would love to lose two more pant sizes. I am also a 6 foot woman weighing in around 200 and currently in a size ten. I was in 14-16 when I was at my haviest of 230s. So once again it all depends on your body. I tend to lose weight in weird areas first; face, fingers, and thighs before the belly will go anywhere. I hope to wear a size 6 by August 2010 which I hope also equals about 30lbs. But in the end the only reason you should be worrying about the number on the tag is when it is because of the unhealthy way you are living. If you are working on those healthy habbits those pant sizes will get smaller!

Somethings that people are forgetting about pants sizes:
It does depend on body shape and how quickly you are loosing from waist & hips

It does depend on your height (the taller you are the more weight to move pants size). I'm six foot even and I know that a range from 170 to 230 (60 pounds!) is only two pants sizes.

There is a difference between 18 and 18W, and 16 and 16W. Brand names are also different. Since the weight loss you might have gone from a 18W to an 18 because of where your weight is now (big belly slimming but gaining more muscle in the rear or thighs can keep you in the same size)

I hope this helps and congrats on all weight loss, whether you get to go shopping for new pants or not!

I am hoping if I lose 20lbs that I will be a size 12 again. I am size 16 right now but my pants are a little loose so it seems like I will be changing sizes soon.

JRR0405 - BMI calculations only take into account height and weight. It doesn't look at muscle mass or your frame size.

BMI is only meant to be a loose guideline for weight. I'm guessing that's why you saw such a difference.

I came from an assessment yesterday and for my height I'm meant to lose at least 22kgs (which translates to 48.4 lbs (apparently I'm obese by BMI standards)!

Then I used the fat percentage measurements and apparently I only have to lose 3% body fat to get in the healthy level (I'm right in the middle of the overweight range by body fat percentage standards)... how does that make sense???

I can never really tell how many pounds it will take to lose a pants size. I guess i've lost one so far. I was 217 and now I'm 206 and I went from a 16 to a 14. However, remembering the past, I think I was 185 the last time I was a 12. SO, I have a LONG way to go before I'll drop another size. I'm trying not to dwell on it but i have a big stack of pants in size 12 just waiting for me.

I feel you pain! I have lost 15 lbs since I started tracking (at my last dr's appt he said I have lost 20), but still haven't dropped a pant size! I have "thunder thighs" and a booty. I have lost 3 inches off of each thigh but still no change. *sigh* My current jeans are sagging in the butt big time but my old "fat" jeans don't fit yet. Frustrating yes, but it give me something more to work for!

I usually drop a pant size every 15-20 pounds. It took more pounds for the first size drop - probably because they were too tight to begin with when I started dieting! :)

Hey guys, I'm new to this group so here goes... I'm in between a size 16 and 14 right now but mainly because of my fat around my belly... I'm really short, only 5' so all my pants always have to be taken up and all my weight is around my belly because I had twins 9 months ago... I'm getting into most clothing fine except for pants and it is sooo frustrating!!!

I think everyone is rght, depends on what shape body you have. If you have a nice hourglass, the pants sizes fall off pretty consistently but pear shapes just have to work that every bit harder!

I just lost one! But I have lost no weight at all. Go figure. I am feeling very ambivalent about the whole loosing weight thing right now. I have been working hard for 3 weeks. I see positive changes, my skirts are getting loose, my wedding ring is sliding off, but the scale still tells me I have not lost at all. Oh well.

Not positive on this, but I heard somewhere that 10lbs would take you down a size, depending on where you typically lose weight...if you rarely lose in the stomach area first, obviously it will take more...

I dont know if you can really put an exact amount of weight on your pants size. I have lose 36 lbs and I have went from a size 38 to a 33. So I think it may vary from person to person?

And you right as long as I look good in it I can be a sexy size 16!!! Thanks for the encouragement!! I was actually looking at some of my old measurements and weight a couple of years ago and your right the body changes cuz what i weighed back then i sure don't have the same measurements!! But its funny on some things at the exact same weight i'm smaller in areas and then other areas i'm bigger!!! Its crazy!!

I was talking to my mom the other day, and told her how much I weighed. She said, "Wow, that's great! When I weighed that much, I was a size 14. Is that what you wear?" But of course, I don't. I wear a size 18. I think it all depends on the size and shape of your body.

Hey congrats on the 30lbs! BTW, I was thinking about this. Size 16, size 14: I wouldn't let that worry you much. If your body is shaped right now to be a size 16, you can be a SEXY!!! 16! No one except seamstresses are going to be able to judge what size pants you wear. So this is my advice: go to someplace like Max Azria (maybe as cheap as Banana Republic) and try on $100 pants in a 16 and see what good pants can really do! Even if you can't afford them, at least you'll be able to see that sometimes it's not the size, it's the pants.

It's so interesting to read what everyone's said! For me, it's kind of weird. I have a major pear shape body, and it seems like it's going to stay that way. I've lost almost 15 pounds. I lost 5.5 inches around my waist, but guess what? I only lost 2.5 inches around my huge hips!

Not that I mind, of course. I'm really happy with the inches I've lost. But that means I'm not going down jean sizes very fast. My jeans are all super loose on me, though, so I do think I've lost one jean size.

More interesting to me is that I lost a bra size, LOL. I went from being 41 band size to 38. Thank god I haven't gone down in cup size!

The thing with size is you have to take into consideration height and body fat distribution. That's why nobody is the same b/c everyone's shape is different. Good luck Babygirl! I hope you meet your goal. I was hoping to be under 200 by next weekend but that is still 8 lbs away so I will just have to wait a few more weeks to reach it. :)

Babygirl,

It all has to do with body shape. I am a huge fan of New York & Company. Right now they have a 50% off sale going on and they sale both petite, average, and long lengths. Don't get discouraged! Find a store that fits you well and you will be able to find jeans or other things that work for you. Good luck!!

I am down 2 pant sizes and have lost 30 lbs. I weigh about 207 right now. I hope that it's true that when you are smaller it goes to 10 lbs per pant size. I almost had a heart attack when I walked into NY&Co and realized I fit into a 14 b/c just a couple months ago I was able to buy 16's and I was ecstatic about that. LOL Keep going everyone. I find that when I work out more and I keep the bloat out my clothes tend to fit a lot better even if the scale doesn't reflect a loss.

Stacy I know how you feel I was doing a workout called The Firm and it had basically step aerobics and it caused me to gain an inch on my thighs within a week!!! I was so depressed!! So I cut out the step aerobics training switched to Turbo Sculpt and that seems to be working for me. I feel your pain!!!

To Stacy517, it will take a while to see results when you incorporate weight training into your weight loss program. Not only does muscle weigh more than fat, your body also requires different foods to support your weight training regimen versus cardio. Good luck to you.

Ugh..I'm down 14lbs and my pants still basically fit the same. I've been doing a strength training class 2-3 times per week though, so I'm guessing it's muscle that's not making me drop a size, it is kinda depressing though. :( Hopefully I'll start to see some movement in that area though!

I think it depends A LOT on your body type - how your body stores fat and, consequently, how your body decides to start using stored fat. That being said, for me personally it was around 12 lbs for me to be able to fit into a size smaller. :)

I feel as if there isn't an accurate amount to go bye. If you are excercising more, you are building muscle as you lose body fat. This may make your clothese seem to fit different. Everyone says that the best thing to do is to keep track of your measurements. Hope that helps!

I know exactly what you mean!!! I've lost 25 pounds since Jan 1 and it seems like it took me 15 pounds to lose 1 pant size. I heard somewhere when your in your 200's it takes about 15 pounds and then when you get smaller it takes 10 pounds. I wonder how true that is?? And when does that start I would love to lose a pant size by losing 10 pounds instead of 15!!!!

I've heard 10 pounds = one size. But of course, that's a rough estimate.

I think for me it took a little more than that for my first (and only so far) pant size drop.

I know that it varies per person but I was wondering if you could share how many pounds it takes for you or if there is just one amount that equals the size loss??
