same problem, i got a little belly pooch and it just looks disgusting. so there is no way i can flatten it entirely without having a bit pooch in the abdomen but i have been successful maintaining a flat tummy, so i wouldnt come out.

i've been dancing an hour-heavy dancing to songs like MC hammer-u cant touch this etc. i take 1 minute break with simple slow breathing walk in between each song. this is for the toning of the legs

then i lift dumbells which is about 4 kilos about 10 mins-this is for toning the arms for flabs

then i stretch 20 mins, doing walking lunges, planks and bridges for the entire flexibility of the body.

then i run 10 mins for cardio again...

and before i go to sleep...i do 30-50 crunches for abs.

at first it increased my weight and i thought probably i was doing it wrong. then i was told that i was gaining muscle so they were retaining water. then after few months it started going down. now i lost just a kilo and i have lost a bit of tummy, but the pooch is still there. i think the skin would forever exist even if the fat disappears from there.

I have a suggestion for replacing bananas as a snack in the diet and still getting potassium - sweet potatoes! I've been eating 2-3 daily and it's been great. They're still tasty when you pop them in the microwave for 4-6 minutes.

I'm also working on getting rid of fat around my midsection - I've heard one too many stories about the health risks of a wider midsection... I'm so far just continuing to work out the whole body, run, and eat at a slight caloric deficit.

One thing I'd like to point out is that if you are well toned everywhere else and when tested have a lowish body fat % is that you may have a diastasis. There are some specific ab exercises that can correct this if it's in fact what you're battling!

the podcast is correct. Potassium feeds your muscles.

Everyone has their own opinion on this subject, but I believe that there is no way to target belly fat. You have to work on your body as a whole. Jillian Michaels videos are amazing, and are designed to target everything. Cardio is your best bet, but you have to have strength training as well.

MRSMIAM it is so interesting how much conflicting info there is out there. Lol. Different things work for different people, because we are all individuals with different tolerances and intolerance's to different foods. You will find your weight loss success when you find the flow that works best for you and your body. I've found mine :)

Keep pushing! YOU WILL REACH THOSE GOALS!

Genetics plays such an important role in flat belly-- I have a gf with a flat belly but thicker legs and arms--whereas I have thin arms and a big belly. I am aiming for those victoria secret abs, and while I'm not there just yet I did manage to get rid of my food baby and shrink my waistline. Also a detox is not going to wash away lbs of fat stored in the belly, stored fat has to be worked off by the metabolism and/or working out.

I've noticed that my belly looks more pooshie on the days when my abs aren't sore, typically meaning that I have to intensify my ab routine. As time goes on, I'm slowly getting those vertical lines on my stomach and I'm very happy.

Also, I read a lot about belly fat because that's kind of the body part I'm obsessed with and one article said that the belly fat in women is the last area to go. Sometimes in order for women to have abs they have to have something ridiculous like 10% body fat or less. So don't get discouraged --it's hard and those ab workouts hurt but it's so worth it.

Hi Jen,

Girls at my office cut out bananas because a dietician told one of them that bananas mess with weight loss. So they all have grapefruits as their 10AM and 3PM snacks because supposedly grapefruit speeds up your metabolism.

On the other hand, I listened to some podcasts yesterday. And in one of them they were talking about the importance of potassium for weight loss and maintenance, and it is in high doses in bananas...

It's interesting how controversial different sources of information can be.

Do you eat late at night? I find when I start to have belly fat, it's because i've been eating snacks like an hour or two before bed. Food is supposed to be fuel for the body so if you eat one to two hours before bed, you are not using the energy that your body makes from the food. It then settles around the midsection to store for later use.

Try not to eat anything at least three hours before bed. If you must eat, drink a full glass of water instead of eating.

Strength train instead of cardio, heavy weights, compound lifts. It'll improve the appearance of your core like nothing else, pilates/barre help as well. Intense cardio is hard on the body and in a deficit, highly catabolic (muscle loss) so you lose the harder defined look and retain water from higher cortisol levels due to your hormones being jacked up from intense exercise everyday. You'll probably even drop water within the first week switching from cardio to weights and notice a huge change in your stomach area. Aside from that, drink tons of water, avoid processed salty foods that can cause water retention and increase your potassium/magnesium rich foods to help with water fluctuations to stabilize everything, most of all eat at a deficit but not a huge deficit, you want to keep your muscle and look more defined, not poochy/loose.

Say no to the "Yo Yo"

Suggestions for belly fat:

Problem #1: doing something extreme (like detox or "cutting" foods that you normally eat)

Why is this a problem? We are surrounded by people who eat bananas and white rice. Thus, although we may be able to do this for a short time it will most likely not work in the long run.

Solution: Cut back on your OVERALL food intake. It is very true that less calories really will make you lose weight. You may not see this in the beginning, but it will work in the end. The main suggestion is to keep exercising normally (in a way that you can maintain for the rest of your days) so that you can eat a few more calories and still be losing weight. Thus, diet and exercise really is the only way to rid yourself of excess fat on your middle.

Problem #2: only doing abdominal exercises

Why is this problem? Although you are gaining abdominal muscle if you do proper exercises, you are not necessarily losing fat from that area. Everyone is an individual and loses fat/gains fat in different areas of the body. That's why some people who have a little too much weight have large bellies, while others have big hips.

Solution: Continue doing your abdominal muscle exercises, but add in exercises/strength training from all over your body! Arms, legs, and shoulders; neck, ankles, and back. More muscles will help you burn more calories and therefore lose weight (as long as you don't make up for the difference with extra food!).

General caveat: Most of my information here has come from reading SparkPeople articles on fitness and weight loss. I believe that it is accurate, but please check it with your own research! Send me a message on my Spark page if you have found evidence of other solutions. Thank you and good luck!

My body has been entrusted to me, and it is my responsibility to nourish it well and maintain it soundly.

I luv the style of just high waisted anything! It's true, when you lose fat, it's from all over ur body. For instance, we all have ABS :-), we just have the lady pooch hiding it. I've lost fat from all over my body, not just tummy. But you can do belly exercises to tone your ABS so when you do see em, they make you wanna cry...happy tears, of course lol.

An update on my journey, I finished Jillian Michael's Ripped in 30. It didn't have such drastic effects for me as the 30 day shred. So I got mad, I literally have been busting my butt for nothing! So I stopped, mentally prepared myself, said I've already come so far, I'm not giving up, I deserve this. So I went back to my detox cleanse. It's a challenge and not for everyone, but I've lost 25 pounds with it in the past. I figured since extreme exercise and cutting calories wasn't doing it, time to bring out the armory lol! I'm on day four. I combine it with relaxing yoga and a waist belt to encourage toxin release through increased sweating. My love handles are melting away. So much less jiggle. I haven't weighed myself yet, but I will once my lady pooch is gone. I'm almost at my goal. I'll be sure to update!

That's awesome. I read somewhere that sometimes stubborn belly fats are built up toxins and that kind of yoga is good Bc it detoxes with it's heat. Anywho.....good luck :-)

Hey girlie! Glad I got this email for this post. Long story short, over the past three years I've gained 60 pounds.....and lost them!! I do have this problem with belly fat too, I have a hourglass figure, but the belly fat made me look like box with a big top and bottom lol. O and BTW, I also have PCOS. So I HAD to cut down carbs. ln an effort to sculpt my hourglass, I did the 30 day shred, started Couch to 5k, did toning exercises about ten minutes per day on a specific body part mon-fri, and did tabata four times per week. I did cut out some carbs, so basically no white rice, but I cannot lie and tell you I didn't have a slice of chocolate cake, of candy canes at Xmas, or a wrap for lunch. I did balance it off though, ate TONS of greens, garlic, and onions, and drank lots of water. My diet was like a maintenance version of the Atkins diet. With holiday meals included lol. I lost 3.4 inches off my lady pooch. It was like magic. I'm almost at my ideal body, so I'm kicking up the routine a notch with Jillian Michael's Ripped in 30. Hope to lose a couple more inches, and I'm set to go! Hopefully this helped, Please feel free to send me any questions!! :-)

Keep pushing! YOU WILL REACH THOSE GOALS!

Hi everyone, I have a food baby! emoticon any suggestions on how to lose belly fat? I have been tracking my food and working out 5 to 6 x a week. I do intense cardio (elliptical, running, spin class, boxing, tons of abs) but my belly still is there. I don't want to go on an extreme diet where I cut out carbs completely and drink protein shakes but I need something thats gonna work ASAP..I heard bananas aren't that good for you anyone hear that?? I was using one in my breakfast smoothies, so I cut them out to see if it makes any difference.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
