I am sort of half way to the day I am no longer a smoker..... I have hit the wall... I have been cleaning the house vigorously, then going to the gym to work out the anxiety from cleaning the house. I am really glad I am doing this now and not after I quit, the amount of nicotine I am absorbing through my hands is probably worth 40 cigarettes a day! It's disgusting, gross and tacky. I am also hacking up crud from my lungs, which is also disgusting. I have cut my intake Orally anyway to half... the absorption through the skin, I can't evaluate.
Anyway, the closer I get there, there is just a wee part of me that is a bit anxious of not having a cigarette when I get panicky. But for the WHOLE rest of me that is truly paying attention, I am heading into this goal unmoved.
Oh, I don't know if I posted on this board or not the result of my scans Last Tuesday... Everything came back clean, the dermatologist had great margins on the biopsied site, there was one involved lymph node -that was removed Tuesday evening and a play on my ear that was frozen off and has just in the last hour fallen off...
There are no involved lymph nodes (THANK YOU GOD) ... so I only have to see the oncology dermatologist every three months... so I am doing good and other than the up and down of the sleeping and anxiety in the waiting period... I am sort planking off and relaxing ... yesterday I caught up on the sleep.
THANK YOU ALL For your support and encouragement, I will be a non-smoker on the 17th of July.

be authentically you...
it's journey, not a one day hike.

Need of some help/advice..I have tried to quit three times this past month..each time I wake up in the am..apartment clear of all smoking reminders, hard candies in toe, put on a patch, and go..each time I have come home from work so exhausted and stressed that I tear off the patch and buy a pack of cigarettes..my latest attempt was yest..I put the patch on at 8 am..worked from 2-930..but the store was so busy due to the holiday..that I was so frazzled by the end of the day that I stopped at a convenience store and bought a pack..its almost 10am on Sunday and I only have two cigarettes left..I go back to teaching tomorrow and I am really disappointed in myself because I had a week off for spring break and I wanted to go back a non smoker..any advice on how to keep that patch on and keep going?? emoticon

Caroline, how are you doing with your quitting? Were you able to quit on March 7? That would put you at 3 weeks...a VERY awesome point to hit! Keep up the GREAT work!

I know that your message was back in Feb. I just wanted to say how great it is to hear of someone that has made it so far. I on the other hand have been putting it off so as of now 3-7-2012 I am stopping. I could use all of the support that i can get. I would also like to say to all that are like me just starting their stop date take it one hour at a time and calibrate each of those hour with out a smoke. And i too think that there should be spark points for all of us that are working hard to quit smoking. Heres to all of us emoticon

Doing okay...on day 54 without cigarettes...I was wondering if we have someone who has the ability to make a goal for those of us who have quit to remain off of cigarettes to track on spark? Just a thought because the two goals that are there don't really pertain to me anymore now that I've actually quit... be strong, y'all!

Go and look at the list at

www.ftc.gov/reports/tobacco/1998tar&nico
tinereport.pdf

or

pw1.netcom.com/~rdavis2/smoke.html

and pick something lower than what you're smoking now, and if you can, pick the opposite type (if you smoke regular, switch to menthol: if you smoke methol, switch to regular).

I highly suggest that anyone who wants to quit review and plan to (at least) switch cigarette brands to a lower tar and nicotine cigarette with the next purchase. I put the link into the first part of my two part quit smoking plan blog:

http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public
_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=4207819

I've got to admit that I'm actually forgetting to smoke my permitted cigarettes now that my wait time is up to the full hour. I lowered my numbers over the years to get down to the lowest. Interesting stuff, and it's working for me.

i'm still smoking but plan on trying again on tue. whenever i will be out of smokes. i know what you mean about the dependency on them. i also have some mental problems as well as a host of other health problems too. i know i need to quit smoking and i know i'll feel allot better if i do it. i just hope that it will work this time around and i'll stop for good.

If it had been 72 hours I might try that but it will only have been about 42 or something like that :\ Thank you though! I also have very bad anxiety so I rely on cigarettes for much more than the physical addiction, it's a mental addiction as well. emoticon

CASSIERUNS1....why not try not?

The nicotine is gone from your system 72 hours after your last cigarette, meaning the physical dependency is over, and withdraw symptoms as well. After that, it's all psychological dependency. So I have to ask you.......

..........why not TRY not?

I have never been in a situation where I could not have a cigarette for that long of a period of time, as the only time I was even in the hospital, one could take their cigarettes down to the lounge and smoke them (1978). I swore if I ever got to 72 hours without, I would never pick up another.

Carpe Diem! We'll be right here to help you. I'm very determined to stop on Sunday, and I could fail, but will keep trying until I succeed, I promise.

If not now, when? Why not TRY not?

Blessings,
Mama

I agree with OURMAMAM, KATLOVSDAN. Just keep trying. Every setback feels like a million steps backward when it's really just one. And in recovery like this it's very often times two steps forward, one step back! Keep that in mind. emoticon

I'm doing ok today, I've been really sick all day so I've spent it organizing my online-life, reading SP articles and hanging out with my boyfriend.. not to mention NOT smoking! I mean obviously I haven't been smoking because if I did I'd puke and pass out (yes, I'm THAT sick.) but I feel like this is actually a good thing. Maybe when I start again (Because I know it's not realistic for me to go cold turkey... I'm definitely going to have my moments where I just NEED a smoke) I can smoke 1/4 a pack or less instead of 1 pack. We'll see how it goes! Just an example of how every cloud has a silver lining. emoticon

I have officially met my first (of three) goals with my weight at 130#. As promised, I have already posted my plan for goal #2 which is to quit smoking. I have been working the plan already, am up to waiting 45 minutes as outlined on the plan, and picked my quit date.

MONDAY, MAY 23, 2010, I WILL BE SMOKE FREE!

I'm down to 9 cigarettes per day.

Hi everyone. I'm used to smoking about 2-2 1/2 packs everyday. Today is my second day that I'm down to a pack a day.
I allow myself 1 cigarette every hour.
So far, so good. :)

I am going to be starting on my 3rd day of not smoking as of 12mn. It is going better than most of my quits have gone. I have an e cigarette that I use when I really feel like I need something. So far so good. I hope this is finally it. I am tired of wasting money and smelling bad and being out in the cold or rain to smoke. Just so many things about it are bad that I reallly want to do it this time. Karen

I am actually doing very well. Haven't had a cig since April 7 and have no desire for one. My husband is a smoker too but he is on the road for his job a lot so I don't have anyone smoking around me which seems to be a huge help. I got the free nicotine patches for the State of Michigan Quit Line and they have helped me tremendously! I just don't buy cigarettes any more. The first few days were tough but I think I've got it now! Hope so anyway! I feel great. Good luck to you and keep it up. It is worth it!

Thankx for being a friend Robin, no i don't have a ipod but i will look into that, for now i'll try the talk to myself method that you mentioned! That's what i need a good dose of self discipline! Being hooked on smoking takes that option away and it's time i got it back! Lucy

You're so welcome Lucy! I know it's so hard - but you are doing FANTASTIC!!! :) And if no one else has said it to you - I am proud of you. :)

Do you have an ipod? If so, I am using a technique in an audiobook called "How to Stop Smoking and Stay Stopped for Good" by an author called Gillian Riley. I've tried the patch, the gum, laser therapy, chantix, webutrin and all kinds of homeopathic stuff and have never been able to pass a week. This technique is "cold turkey" but it makes you face the addiction head on and train yourself to handle cravings as a CHOICE. Wild - but it works. You can get the book on itunes or here on amazon www.amazon.com/Stop-Smoking-Stay-Sto
pp
ed-Good/dp/0091917034/ref=sr_1_3?ie=R>UTF8&s=books&qid=1253205114&sr=8-3
. It took me twice through the book and some practice, but to my astonishment - it's working!!

- Rob

Lucy - I've read plenty on this topic and have tried just about everything. The only thing that is keeping me quit after 21 days is taking each and every craving that I have and I do the following... I sit with my craving. I talk to myself (in my head) and I say - ok... I'm having a craving and that's ok. I am an addict of nicotine. It's not my fault. I CAN go out and smoke - I can buy a carton and smoke if i want to. THe option is always there. But for now, in this moment in time, I am choosing not to so that I can 1) smell better 2) have better self-esteem and control and 3) because I simply really don't want to start all over again.

I hope this helps - take it day by day - one moment at a time. :)

Has anyone else had this happen, is it normal?

I'm doing better than I expected to be! I'm on day 5... and going strong! I'm already able to smell the smoke on my husband when he come back from outside!! Amazing!

The hardest thing for me, so far, is getting into the car and NOT lighting one up... or after eating (if we eat out)... but other than that... it's going well!

I'm new to this team, and i really need support.. I am on my 10th day quit and i need help staying with it! There is another smoker in my house and just seeing a cigarette bothers me, and the high stress that everyone in the house has is really messing with me! What i need is some of you to encourage me and cheer me on, maybe let me know how you do it in my situation! Thanks.. lucy

I am not doing well this day. Not this morning anyway; there's still time to recover. It seemed I was spending too much time smoking to avoid doing the things I should be doing.

What week are you on now? You need to take in something sweet to help with the jitters. Smoking messed with your sugar levels and the body's ability to regulate it. Taking in something sweet can help with the jitters. Try fruit juice, or some yogurt if you like it. Jamba juice works great too, because you can make the drink of your choice with just what you need.

I can tell you something sweet will help. It will give you another hand to mouth habit and help with the jitters/cravings. Increase your water, flavored with lemon to help cleanse your liver.

I've been relatively good about postponing a smoke with water. Right now, I'm refusing to go cold turkey (again). Instead, I spent the last few days tracking my smoking and I'm cutting back from there. Instead of the "on-the-hour" smoke, I'm forcing myself to double that time for the next week. Then, I'm adding another hour and then another. SO this is my cigarette every two hours week. I'm a bit fidgity right now, but I'm also seventeen minutes past my current smoke time. That's some extra progress :)

i'm doing okay considering almost everyone i know smokes, i am now going into my 2nd week as a non-smoker. everything tastes better - well most things, coffee is no longer my favourite drink, enjoying trying different foods just to actually taste the difference.
my sense of smell has come back and i'm way more energetic than i have been for a long time!

It looks like April has started off pretty busy for everyone. I am in and out of the quitting stage. I am now telling myself to just get through the day. I picked up my favorite juices and I want to ride this out this time for the next 3 weeks. I figure if I can get through the next 3 weeks, I can do the rest easy.
