This year, I wanted to create an alcoholic beverage that would be fruity, refreshing, and, of course, light on the calories. I came up with a fresh Sangria that really hit the spot! Of course, I had to taste test the recipe before posting the recipe on, so I will have to make a new pitcher for tonight!

Of course, I don't recommend drinking alcohol regularly if you are trying to lose weight, but this one won't hurt if enjoyed in moderation. And if you prefer non-alcoholic drinks, you can leave out the wine and increase the fruit juice. My kids love to drink it without the Pinot Grigio; I just have to remember to label the pitchers carefully so nobody gets mixed up!

Here is the recipe:

Homemade Sangria (Pinot Grigio or Non-Alcoholic)

This light, refreshing drink is a lovely treat on a hot evening, and it looks beautiful in a glass pitcher. Substitue 1.5 C extra each of white grape juice and light apple juice to make it a non-alcoholic beverage. Add a cup of strawberry or raspberry flavored sparkling water to create a bubbly spritzer!

3 C (24 oz) Pinot Grigio Wine
1 C Light Apple Juice
1 C White Grape Juice
1/4 Cup Fresh Raspberries
10 Red Grapes (Halved)
1/2 Lime (Sliced)
3 Strawberries (Sliced)

1. Wash and slice fruit. Place in a clear pitcher.

2. Add wine and juices to the pitcher

3. Stir and mash fruit slightly with a spoon.

4. Refrigerate until serving, at least 1 hour. Pour so that fruit remains in pitcher, and does not fall into glasses as you serve.

Note: Fruit calories are not included in the nutritional information as it is not intended to be served with the wine. It is, however, a wonderful topping for ice cream or angelfood cake, if you would like to serve it separately.

Also, my daughter recommended adding a shot of brandy, which tastes heavenly, but 1 oz adds about 12 calories per serving.

Serves 5 approximately.
