Morning Friends,

Long time, I know. How is everyone? We have started back to school and are off to a good start. My ds is doing O.K. considering the Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. The dr. is now checking him for lymes. My dd has been getting better since her issues this summer. We are still seeing dr. I am just happy we homeschool.

I just do not understand why both my children are so sick. Praying for complete healing for both. I am open to any suggestions.

Enough about that. I skimmed the recent post to try to catch up. Did everyone have a good summer. I know I have been MIA a lot. Did anyone do anything special?

Heidi, praying for you all!

Have a great day!

Blessings,
Ali

Things are stressful here right now. Dh got another rejection this week after being told he was the top candidate. Makes 3 places now who told him he was the top choice and then not offer it to him. The severance pay ran out 2 weeks ago.

Waiting on God is soooooooooo hard. Abrahan and Sarah waited 25 years for Isaac. Hopefully we won't have to wait that long for a job.

Blessings,
Heidi

Okay, I'm seriously thinking of leaving my job. I just feel like I'm barely keeping my head above water between work, school, housework, and exercising. The kids can only do so much. I'm not sure what to do. I really have it good where I'm at. I'm also not sure if this is just a "season". I have had a weekly meeting for the past year which will soon be ending so then I'll be done to only 3 nights a week out. Also this month has been quite busy so far and I know it's wreaking havoc in things. I just wish God would send a clear message for me.

Heidi how are things going?m did your dh hear anything from that interview?

Has everyone started school yet or are you all getting ready to start?

We started our 15th and final year of homeschooling today as our youngest is a senior this year. I woke him up early (8am HA!!!) and made him his favorite breakfast--sausage gravy and biscuits with scrambled eggs to celebrate. The next 179 breakfasts are on his own. LOL We are not morning people. LOL

Dh had a good job interview today. Hopefully he'll be once again gainfully employed soon.

Blessings,
Heidi

Well we survived it, lol. I think almost all of the kids missed school on Friday but such is life right.
Today has been a bit bumpy as we try to add in our other subjects and I'm really not quite sure how to do that best yet. I feel somewhat unprepared but there really wasn't much more to do before we started, at this point it's just trial and error on some things.

On a fitness note, I did a walk away the pounds video and some strength training. I'm really trying to find what will work best for me right now.

Morning Friends,

I have not been posting as I have just felt the need to hibernate. I am usually such a positive person trusting God to handle everything. I am still trusting God, I am just a little lost right now. My ds basically lost a year of school last year. He managed to clip 2 college classes and that is it. He did not finish any of his high school work. This is due to the RMSF. Very hard for a mom with a normally bright driven child to watch.

My dd spent most of her summer in the bed, at hospitals or in doctors office's. We are still searching for answers really with this. She does have a Chiari, however that is not the cause of these headaches. She still has headaches every day just not as many and not as intense. The neurologist says it was probably hormonal.

So sorry did not mean to be Debbie Downer. I just wanted to explain where I am. I am spending time on me and getting organized. I have recovered all but 1 thing so far.
Thank you for your prayers and understanding.

Heidi, anything new with your dh?

Pali81, how did your cazy week end up?

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Blessings,
Ali emoticon

Thanks for the update. Prayers for wisdom and direction and peace.

We are having a crazy week this week so not sure how much school will get done but we will see. I did put off adding more subjects on until next week because of the craziness.

Morning Friends,

Just wanted to drop by and post an update on my dd. We found out Friday, that she will not have surgery. We met with a great neurosurgeon and he explained everything. We go back to the neurologist tomorrow to see what we do next.

Thank you all for the prayers as she is getting better.

We will be starting some school today. I have become a little disorganized with all of this and lost a couple of things I need so pray for me. I am just struggling with my dd and then my ds Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.

Heidi, how did the interviews go? Praying for you all.

When will you all start school?

Blessings,
Ali emoticon

Ali,
So sorry to hear all you've been going through and now your most recent battle for your dd's health. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dh has had some interviews. Just waiting on God's timing and leading to the right choice.

Blessings,
Heidi

Morning Friends,

Wow, I have missed a lot while I have not been posting. Missed you all. We are just going through many things, continuing the process of getting my ds caught back up after losing a year to rocky mountain spotted fever, one of my bff's battle with ovarian cancer was won with her joining the Lord and my dd has recently been diagnosed with Chiari 1 Malformation. We are currently waiting to see a neurosurgeon on my dd next step. This has been a whirlwind for us.

No, I usually have a quiet life and love day to day routines! My diet and exercise show all of this. I am now focusing on me.

Have a blesses day,
Ali emoticon

We are starting on Monday after a week's delay. But they will got some time off again in September. I'm currently working on printing things out now, actually.

My big three are currently with a friend helping her pack and get ready to move while my younger 3 are here with me. The dynamics of the house are so different without my older ones around.

Thanks everyone for your prayers.

Dh has been home just a few days over 2 weeks now. He's gotten a good dent made in his To Do List (LOL) and has looked into getting an Assoc. Degree to make himself more appealing on paper. 2 places have turned him down because of his "background". He is apply for positions for which he has done for at least 15 years--a buyer for several factories. So what is so troubling about his "background"....his Preaching Ministries degree!!!!!!!!!!!! WorkOne thinks if he gets an Assoc. in something else, they will 'over-look' the Christian degree and might even be able to remove it from his resume to make him more marketable.

UN- BE-LIEVE-ABLE this society we now live in--that being a Christian makes you unhireable.

He does have 2 interviews this week. One company may not care about his Ministry degree, the other may as they are QUITE liberal and QUITE political with their worldview.

17 yo ds is working nearly 40 hours a week with the landscaping business where he found summer employment so we've gotten NO schoolwork done this summer. He didn't even get his 4-H projects done this year.

I am bored with no one to teach and only housework to do. Never thought I'd say that when the kids were younger and teaching them took up sooooo much time since they have dyslexia.

Now they are 22 and working and 17 and working and beginning his senior year.

I'm going to HAVE to find something to occupy myself---maybe go back and earn a Master's in Special Ed and then open up my own diagnosing/therapy/tutoring business. LOL I want to be able to use whatever therapy/curriculum is needed for a child---not a specific one----as for our son, he had 4 very different kinds of therapy and each one was a piece of the puzzle (Vision therapy, Right-Brained therapy, Earobics, and Irlen Syndrome filtering glasses.) which made up his issues. Each child is unique and not any one therapy or curriculum is perfectly suited to each and every child's issues. Anyway...just thinking and praying about my future as well as our Senior's and my dh's.

At least dd is square away as a Preschool Teacher for now and not courting anyone. Don't think I could take many more life changes just now. emoticon

Blessings,
Heidi

h i Everyone.

praying for you Heidi.

In theory we are suppose to start school on Monday but I really just don't see it happening. I'm pretty confident about what I have for my oldest but for the other 3 I"m just struggling. Nothing is seeming right and while I would love to do the whole just go interest led and see avenue. PA makes that very hard to to. Anyways, i just needed to get it off my chest.

Hope everyone is having a great holiday weekend.

Prayer request: My husband, the loan bread-winner, was let go at work on Friday. He's been replaced by someone
younger
cheaper
changed position to hourly
willing to work less than 40 hours/week
won't be on company insurance plan

This is the 2nd time time since the 2008 election. Family run companies are STRUGGLING to stay alive with the economy and all the new laws.

Pray the Lord will provide.

I am clinging to Psalm 37 and doing LOTS of yoga and walking to release the stress. I am so thankful I have SP and YOU and your prayers to help me through this trial this time around. emoticon Last time the unemployment lasted 2 1/2 years and I sank into a very deep depression and gained 25 lbs. on all the pasta we had to eat to fill everyone up.

NOT THIS TIME!!! emoticon I have healthy habits, emotional resources, and my SparkFriends and SparkTeams!

Blessings,
Heidi

Pinterest is great!

PALIZ81 hope your kids are still enjoying their reading! Our local library didn't start their summer reading program until yesterday...we're hoping to sign up tonight.

We are in the midst of phase 2 on the kitchen remodel and it has not gone well....so thankful we didn't tackle this during the school year! My poor dh planned and worked so hard to get everything ready (he built the cabinets and countertop) and very few things are going according to plan. The house is a wreck and we're supposed to have my daughter's bday party here Sat. emoticon The plan was to be w/o a sink, stove, etc for a few days but it's been since June 5.

Well, hope you all are doing well and enjoying your summer!

I love Pinterest. I'm handsdelight on there if you want to look me up.

Well summer reading at the library is in full swing at my house and their competitive nature is coming out taps to who can read the most. I gave them a list of books and had them choose some off of there and the rest can be of their own choosing.

Monday I'm starting school with my younger half. I need to get into a routine with them before I start back with my older half in July. They are very excited about it. My a little hesitated. I'd be happier if I was staying tomorrow tomorrow to do prep work but that isn't the case so I'll do what I can today and Sunday

Any one else have plans for the weekend?

I'm in pa to. The affidavit isn't bad. Have it in my 7/1 and you can count days from that point on. I've done year round for the last 2 years and haven't had any trouble getting in 180 days.

Hopefully your super isn't to big of a pain. Remember there is an important vote in the house education committee today about portfolios and stuff.

We do the "main" stuff (workbooks) following a school system type calendar but do activities year round and try to work on the stuff we struggle on during the summer. But we all get 2 months w/out workbooks.

This coming school year 2014-2015 will be my 1st time reporting to the school system here in PA. So, in order to count any summer work as part of our mandatory 180 days I'll have to get my affidavit and objectives in before the activity. Doesn't seem like a biggie to me but I've never done it and I've heard our superintendent can be difficult. emoticon

The last 2 years we had done year round schooling. I'm not sure what we are doing this year. I'm just happy to be done with the 2013-2014 year.

I don't know that I can describe it well so (I'm having one of those scatter brained days!). Here's the original "founder" of workbox system workboxsystem.com/ but there are so many variations of this concept. Here's a homeschool mom's video tuturial www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/b
lo
g/2013/01/workbox-system-video-tutorR>ial.html
There are a ton of variations I've found (some don't even use "boxes" but just the scheduling aspect and some schedule the whole week at once rather than daily) so if you are interested you'll find lots by googling it, or pinterest or even a youtube search. I was amazed at how much there was about it. Now to decide how to implement it next year b/c we need to have less complaining and accomplish more! emoticon

emoticon on getting your homeschool stuff and house ready for the fall! So sorry to hear about your daughter. Praying she heals quickly!

I've been researching ways to keep our homeschool organized and more efficient. I feel like I spend so much time trying to coax my son to do his work and I want him to be more independent. So, I came across workboxes. Has anyone tried them? I'm seriously considering it. I think the visual of what he has to accomplish will help with the "how much longer until school is done?" type questions and will help me to be more organized and maybe I won't forget things as much! emoticon

I spent most of the day yesterday deep cleaning my house and organizing curriculum for the fall . I found several websites that you can print free yearly lessons which I took advantage of . I printed 30 weeks of spelling words for my daughter who will be starting 5th grade and I also printed a home ec course for her ( nothing wrong with saving money where I can ) . yesterday evening she had a bike wreck and fractured 2 bones in her wrist so tomorrow she will have a cast put on

life of Fred is non-consumable and is in story style. At the end of each short chapter there is "your turn to play" which is when you put into practice what you learned in the chapter.

Math Mammoth is workbooks. Very heavy on mental math. The "teacher's" part is included in the workbooks. There area also supplements if you wish to use them.

I found the child that loves to read has done much better with Life of Fred than he did with Singapore. A different child really likes Math Mammoth, she can read the explanations and do the problems. A 3rd child does both as I see necessary.

I have also come to the conclusion that my child need drill practice and they use xtramath on the computer for that, it's free.

I find choosing curriculum to be overwhelming. Thankful there are so many options but there are SO MANY options! emoticon Even free ones.

My sis-in-law, a homeschool mom I met at the library and a lady at church use the Math U See. I borrowed one of the videos from my sis-in-law during the summer and ds and I watched it. We both liked how he taught and the idea of using the manipulatives (which I didn't have) and I really liked that you stay on that lesson until the child master's the concept (that they can teach it back to you).

I'm looking into Math U See. I've heard good things about Saxon Math but that it's a lot of work. I've been using ABeka which is good but just isn't meeting all of my son's needs right now and in the future doesn't go as high in to math as I think he may want to go (ie, Calculus).

DELIA38961, that's great that you are already done! My sis-in-law is finished as well but they are doing extra things she's found online or elsewhere until public school let's out (my bro-in-law is a school teacher).

I have most of my curriculum for next year just waiting til end of this year to do a placement test for ds with math as we are switching curriculum for math.

Hope you all are having a good day!

Wow, I can't believe it is Thurs already!
With learning to fit in 17yo son's new job, starting gardening, and gearing up for my homeschool co-op class end of the year lessons, exam, and semester project, the days are just flying by right now.

I was able to get outside and walk yesterday afternoon while son was reading an Edgar Allen Poe short story for his co-op class. I left wit the inteniton to only walk 2 miles but ended up doing the full 3.2 mile route around a nearby lake. I hadn't gone that distance since fall, but the temps, humidity, and wind was just right and the sun was shining. At each mile, I didn't think I could go on and even tried to call home for someone to come get me at one point but my cheap Tracfone had no service in that valley so I had to keep walking! LOL In the end I was so sore, but feeling very victorious!!! emoticon It really was a head-game the whole route. Today I will do yoga to help repair my fibromyalgia-ic muscles.

I had no plans for last weekend, but this weekend I have a gardening class to attend, which I am very excited to attend.

Blessings,
Heidi

Ali- God's Not Dead is definitely worth seeing. My hubby and I make a habit of seeing anything remotely decent in hopes that Hollywood sees it as profitable enough to continue. Our youth leader took the teens to see it this week and they loved it as well. If you can find the time, it will be well spent.

Morning Friends,

We had a wonderful day yesterday. The weather was beautiful and I got to stay home and catch up on some things. We never get to just stay home! Loved it!

I understand the school thing Heidishope, my ds has rocky mountain spotted fever and some days and has his own pace this year. Love the quote.

We have a a fieldtrip tomorrow, which we hardly ever do now with teenagers. This is done by the Bar Association, it is called Journey Through Justice. The children will be doing a mock trial. This should be fun.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Hope everyone's week is going well.

Our 17yo son starts his job today. He works in the shop fixing and maintaining the equipment for a yard crew. He's done Small Engines in 4-H for 9 years now so it is right up his alley, for which we are VERY thankful!! However, with his dyslexia, he is already so slow with his school work and I just wonder how many Sundays will now HAVE TO be spent on schoolwork.
He's very excited, we are thankful, but I am worried. We only have 13 months until graduation and still sooooo much to do!

I need to keep telling myself a very helpful quote I heard a long time ago...."My children's futures are NOT up to me. That is too heavy a burden. It is the Lord's burden to bear and He is Faithful." or something like that.

Hope it blesses someone else today!

Blessings,
Heidi

Morning,

We have had some interesting weather also. Cold one day, warm the next? Should be in the 80's today, and we have 30's over the weekend with rain. I am looking forward to spring!

We have been very busy. My ds is doing a little better and my dd is so busy she is just worn out. My dh and I decided to just slow down and let her do what she can. Drama this time of year takes up a lot of time. We do push the academics, however drama has done helped my dd come out of her shell and really helped her. This is a Christian group.

My dd and I had a wreck about a week ago and totaled the car. The breaks failed. My dd sprained her foot and we were bruised up. We were very lucky. I still have thoughts of it at times. I am just prayerful my dd does not have flashbacks of it.

My children did go see God's not Dead this weekend. This is the 1st movie they have gone to see in a long time. i am not seeing very good reviews on Noah. I do not think we will be going to see that one. My dh and I are going to see God's not Dead when we can work it out. Most of the people we have talked to said it is worth the time and money. I have trouble spending the money and wasting time on so much that is out there.

Hope you all are having a great week.

Blessings,
Ali emoticon

I've found it is sooo much harder to keep my son motivated when the snow and ice melts and the sun starts shining and the weather warms up.
A few tricks I've done over the years.....

2 good hours of schoolwork earns 20 minutes outside free-activity, then 2 more hours earns 30 minutes.

Sometimes we flipflop our daily schedule, just to keep it interesting---- afternoon subjects in the morning, morning subjects in the afternoon

Let him do school on a blanket in the sunshine (indoors or out)

Instead of worksheets, have him create a diorama or costume or drama of something in his history or literature

DVDs/Netflix on a topic covered in his history, literature, or science

If I think of anymore, I'll post again.

Take care!!

Blessings,
Heidi

Praying for you, Sunflowergammy.
I met another homeschool mom at the library the other week. We've talked ad emailed a few times. It's been so nice. There aren't any hs groups that meet locally here.
Hope you all are doing well.

Good morning everyone emoticon Anyone have any tips that work to help me motivate my 12 year old son to be a little more self motivated. I have been going through a very rough patch with MS and I have worksheets and workbooks and educational computer games but getting him to complete them without me hovering is almost like pulling teeth right now. emoticon Maybe its just a rough patch for both of us. Please pray for us as we begin to get back into our regular routine this week!

Morning,

Yea! My ds got his license. He never seemed to want to drive, however he has enjoyed his new found freedom. He has gone to see friends, scouts and of course the pet store.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. We are so behind with so many things going on. We have always been ahead so I am struggling. I know it will all work out, I just need to get everything organized.

I would like to ask for prayer for a dear friend. She was my 1st friend when we moved to where we currently live and is really a friend to all, very much an inspiration. My friend has cancer and is fighting for her life. Her youngest is the same age of my ds and they have been friends since we moved her. My ds is also concerned about him. Cancer is hard.

Thank you all for letting me share and for the prayers.

Blessings,
Ali emoticon

@1WIFE2MOM, How did it go yesterday? Did your DS get his license?

He (The Lord) said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. ~2 Corinthians 12:9

Morning Friends,

Hope everyone is doing great. We had a wonderful week at Teenpact Georgia. Most states have it. Teenpact is held at your state capital. That can be a problem if you do not live close to your state capital. We had youth from all over GA. I worked it. We participated in the camp so we just drove to the camp Monday and came home Friday. The camp provided transportation to and from the capital every day. Well worth the time and money if you can do it.

Jenn, Welcome back, glad to see you post. We all know our children better than anyone else, but maybe just relax and evaluate how your ds learns. Turn it over to the Lord. I struggled with my dd only to realize through the Lords help, part of the problem was me and my expectations. She learns differently than I do and than my ds. I wish now I would have slowed down and had more reading time with her.

Paliz, you are right a down day was needed and to be honest I took another one this weekend. Now, I got to get it together.

Well, we are going to be playing catch up the next few weeks. We are so behind. How is everyone's year going?

Blessings,
Ali emoticon
