I found out that my 14 year was so out of sorts this morning because she has strep. My son has been on antibiotics for strep since last Saturday. I am hoping that my daughter can beat it without antibiotics because she has digestive issues and antibiotics make them worse. We have traveling to do for Christmas so I hope that everyone gets well before Wednesday. emoticon

Gotta go! I can hear that our rabbit is loose in the house somewhere.

We are moving through our work to get ready for break. My 14 year old seems ready to have a nervouse breakdown since she has final exams and essays for various group classes due today.

I have been exercising daily. A couple of days ago I did a lower body workout and still can't go up and down the stairs without serious pain. emoticon My hamstrings and quads are fine. It is all those muscles in my hips that are screaming. I have been having some trouble with my right hip this past year and am thinking perhaps I just need some strength training in the hip area. That would be an easy soultion!

Morning Friends,

This is a hard season to diet. I am just trying to maintain. I seem to go up and down a couple of pounds. I have decided to be happy if I lose just 1 pound. That has not happened, but that is my goal for Thanksgiving - New Years.

Delia, praying for you. One of my best friends went to be with the Lord this past July. We spent last New years and had Christmas events together so I understand the emotions.

We had 1 event cancelled today and 1 for tomorrow so I am going to enjoy some family time!
We had a party last night for some high schoolers. It was such fun. We had a gingerbread house decorating contest, white elephant gift exchange, games and a movie. My teens are exhausted today. We are going to try to get some school done. We will take some of a break, but not much, just break on days when we have plans.

Hope you all are taking the time to just enjoy family and friends!

Blessings,
Ali emoticon

Happy Monday everyone. We are on break until 1/5 and it couldn't have started soon enough 😉 My kids have so much happening this week.

I got a good workout in today and am hoping I can keep it going all week.

I'm sorry I didn't read back through to know all that is going on.

We have been busy with some Christmas events too. Doesn't look any slower for us this week.

One more week of school before Christmas break. Anyone planning to take this next week off...I am so tempted.

Morning,

Hope everyone is having a blessed day. This time of year can be so busy and stressful. We are slowing down to enjoy everything. My dd drama's club went to the nursing home Friday and performed USO type songs and skits. It was precious. Saturday, we had 3 events, I am running on exhaustion. Today we ave a tea and painting event, then 2 different things we are suppose to go to. Not sure we will make everything! This week it should start slowing down.

Mary, that is a good idea. I have found I exercise better when I do it 1st. When it is warm enough to go outside, I listen podcast sermons on my walk/run. Best way to start the day!

Have a blessed Sunday!

Thanks Mary, You gave me something to think about! I am always trying to figure out the best way to fit in exercise and devotions. My best success with exercise was when it was first thing in the morning. My best routine with quiet time have also been in the morning.I just can't seem to swing both.

Today I fit in exercise at 3:30 again. I am really enjoying Jessica Smith's Youtube channel. She has kept my muscles sore all week.

ValLittleMa, i don't have a favorite child training book, but I love the cds and free seminars frm CelebrateCalm.com

Valerx, the only way I have found I can exercise consistently is to do it first thing in the morning, wake up get dressed, get my exercise done, then at the end of my day I have my time to spend with God reflecting on all the blessings he gives me each day...since I often have insomnia I have found this gives me more time with God than when I was trying to put it at the start of my day. (And if I look at the activities of the day It is kind of like eating the least desired food off my plate first then giving myself a huge ice cream sundae savoring every bite.) good luck in finding the schedule that works best for you.

Mary,

Yes, it seems like we're booked with at least one event each day now for quite some time. Like you said, Valerie, it's good but stressful. Today our homeschool choir is visiting a nursing home.

Does anyone have a favorite book on child training?

Happy Friday everyone! Has everyone's schedule ramped up for the holidays? I have 2 kids going to a formal Christmas event tonight and 2 going to an ornament making party in addition to all the other things already planned. It is good stuff but it makes the day stressful.

I didn't get to exercise yesterday. The little window of free time was taken up by going to the store to get dress pants for my oldest for tonights event. He grew out of the pair I got him in the summer!

I honestly can't find any free time blocks today for exercise so I will have to look for a place to slip it in.

How is your December shaping up?

Gotta a go start my Geography lesson with child 3 and 4...

Morning,

Hope everyone is having a wonderful December so far and staying warm. We have been unseasonably warm for this time of year in Georgia. We have been in the 70's the last 2 days. Our weather is so weird. A week or so ago it was completely opposite.

I have been exercising most days. I take 1 or 2 days off a week. I have the spark tracker. Does anyone else? Valerx, Thanks for the info on the Youtube Channel. I will check it out. I have a friend doing the Youtube RUKillerFit? another one you all might want to try. I have not yet. This is my goal for today.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Blessings,

I did my exercise again today after school at 3:30. I had our church small group of 8 over for dinner so I only did a 20 minute video. I used the one that SP sent out today with info about Jessica Smith's Youtube Channel. The channel is well organized with a lot of short exercise videos. I think that I willuse it again.

Any one else fit in some exercise? What is working for you?

Not yet. Thanks for the nudge in that direction! I did get to the boys' dental appointments, though. The girls have finished their written work for the day, and we've folded and put away about 4 loads of laundry from the trip. (My bed looks clear again. . . and so inviting! I wonder if I could manage a nap today?)

Off to exercise and then make "peppermint spoons" with the kids for Christmas.

Hi, I am logging in while my coffee brews.

I agree about exercise. Lets make it happen! I have docotors appointments and classes until 3:00 so at 3:30 I have an appoinment with my exercise video..No excuses unless perhaps a child is bleeding (used that excuse Saturday, the dislocated finger excuse on Thursday and broken bone excuse the Friday before).

Finally getting back about the math. We used Fred for junior high. It was very entertaining. My daughter really enjoyed it. We did Saxon in high school for 3 years and my DD is taking Calculus at the community college now. (she's a senior) check out the "fred math" website. It's an interesting approach. :)

Hey Everybody,

Hope everyone has had a nice Thanksgiving. I need to get it together. I seem to be eating for no reason.

Quick thing on the math, just like PALIZ81 said about maybe not using the same program for all the kids, my ds did not prefer Teaching Textbooks.

I am going to start running and exercising tomorrow! There, I said it so now I am at least committed.

Blessings,

We are using life of fred for algrebra. So far so good. Not sure I will be able to use it for all of my kids but it is working for the oldest.

I have survived our 3 thanksgivings.

I'm trying to get back on the exercise bandwagon. It's been a rough month with sickness in my house so that hasn't helped motivation. My thought is why wait for Janiary 1st when tomorrow is December 1st and just as good as any day to start. I'm leaning towards doing the skinny jeans program here on spark people but I'm not sure yet. My low bar expectation of my self is to use the treadmill almost daily. I'd like to do more though.

Hope everyone has a great week

What a great discussion on math! My husband is the math guy at our house. I think we're going to try the Jacobs Algebra with our daughter next year. I heard it is not bad. We'll see. She might need to do something between Pre-Algebra and Algebra.

Had a great trip! When I set my "5 pounds by December 1st" goal, I kinda had in mind a negative number, not a positive one. Oops!!

I'm so thankful for y'all!!

Happy Thanksgiving!! All Glory and honor and praise and thanksgiving to God our father.

i agree that the best math program is the one that fits the child and family. Math U See really works for us. Also I have learned to have tight accountability with math so that I know if the children are forgetting anything or tracking well with the concepts.Once the kids hit that puberty stage they seem to develop holes in their brain. My son is going through a growth spurt and seems to have a foggy brain sometimes. He can just forget how to divide or the rules of negative numbers one day. It is a struggle at that age but it passes!

I have my kids keep a math memory book that they review at times to remember formulas and rules.

Morning Friends,

Happy Thanksgiving! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hope you all have a blessed day full of love and laughter with family and friend! emoticon

Wow, it has been a while since I posted, I did not realize how long it has been. I skimmed the post and probably missed something.

We are in the sunny south so we rarely get snow, although it has been colder than normal lately. Stay warm everyone! emoticon

I stopped enjoying the math around the 5th grade or so. We researched for high school and found Teaching Textbooks seems to have the best geometry and my dh wanted to keep the same program all through high school so we went with that. That being said, we also researched the different issues of SAT and the different programs. We had someone in our group (over 300 families) compare math SAT scores and math programs used to find the best one. Well the answer was not Saxon like so many thought, all the programs seemed to do equal. Bottom line, the best program for high school math is the one that fits your childs learning style and what ever program you start with in high school you need to end with. The high school programs are not apples to apples, each one is different. I also learned that you can do advanced math (think it is Saxon) and it has enough geometry to get a geometry credit. emoticon

Hey Delia, I am with you. I know I need an accountability partner! emoticon

Have a blessed day,
Ali emoticon

yay !! we are on thanksgiving break . I thought I would be able to relax but I tested my 9th grader to see if he is actually getting algebra ( a subject I greatly detest ) and realized he is struggling some so back to the drawing board to get ideas , advice , and tips on how to help him on the other hand my daughter seems to be improving her math skills :)

on an unrelated note : I have completely fell off the health and fitness bandwagon ...im eating whatever I want whenever I want and exercise is nonexistent !! I cant seem to find the motivation to get back on track I don't even log in to spark people and this team is the only team I still interact with

It is cold in NH! We have had snow a couple of times but it didn't stick. I am actually planning a walk outside for exercise today. I will have my wool hat, gloves and down jacket on. The wind is blowing.

Val, thanks for the jokes my brainy son and I loved them! I found a lot of laughter this week at my small group at church and my homeschool mom's meeting.

I was planning to take next week off from school. I really want to put those books away today and have a break! Unfortunately my three older kids have outside classes and were not able to get everything done to have a break so I need to check my attitude and make some time to work with them on Monday and Tuesday. It seems like I am panting for a break more than they are!

Great reminder about laughter (and thanks for the jokes will check them out w/my dh).

Val, I have friends in Florida and they both posted pics of themselves in sweaters sitting by a fire...it cracked me up! I live in southern PA so we can get some cold weather but nothing like the midwest...stay warm!

Delia, hope your son's honey bee raising goes well! It's a lot of work that first year I heard. And your financial project is a neat idea...let us know what they come up with!

My dsil got engaged over the weekend! We are so excited for she and her fiance. They're hoping for a July wedding so I have a goal date...gotta get motivated to lose some lbs before their wedding!

lol yeah that does make you shake your head and smile ...where we lve we have gotten into the teens also which is a shock to us usually we have mild weather until jan and feb most times we are still wearing sandals in dec lol but these past couples weeks I only go out when I absolutely have to and I pretty much stay in my pjs all day lol

on an unrelated note my oldest son has decided to try his hand at raising honey bees . he made a " hive " out of a drawer , a piece of plywood and 6 mason jars it looks really good . we have also started a financial project in which each child will present a project in which they feel is the best way to save and stretch the money we already have .....this is going to be fun and interesting :)

Here's a funny thing for those of you who live in the Midwest/northeast/other cold places. Florida had a cold weather advisory last night. Residents were cautioned to bundle up with coats, hats and mittens when they went out, because of the wind chill. And what was this low temperature for which they were advised such great caution? It was going to feel like it was below 40. . . and possibly reach a low of feeling like 31 degrees!

I agree that coats, hats and mittens would feel good at those temperatures. But here in the (18 degree temps, no wind-chill factored in, during the day) mid-west, I got a good chuckle from that one!

If you're really brainy (read: geeky), there's a list of great jokes at

One of my wonderful cousins recommended it to me. I explained half the jokes to my husband; he explained the other half to me. It was a great time!

Thanks for the recommendation to laugh. What a great idea!

Hi Everyone! I am grateful to God for a new week. My husband is feeling better from his surgery and I am looking forward to having a week off from school next week. I am feeling a little more positive.

I was struck by the thought that I haven't really laughed in a while. Laughter is so healthy! It is probably as good for you as vegetables and vitamin D. Does anyone have something funny to recommend?

If you haven't seen "Mom's Night Out". I would recommend it for a good laugh.

Morning,

Wow, a lot going on here. Well I glad we have looked at the goals we will see if it helps.

It is interesting about finding a church. I agree with go where God calls you. We have not found that peace in a couple of years. We loved our church before. We visited the church we went to a few years ago and on the 1st visit everyone said, "this is it" we have never found that again and that church folded. We do attend 1 church regularly, however we still visit others when we find one that we have not visited. We prefer family integrated and those are hard to find.

We have started going to a home group that is doing a Ken Ham bible study with the family that we like. We have only been once, but it seems to fit us. We did this one other season in our life, we went to one church, were part of a home group that was just a mix and participated in another churches events. We had peace through this season also. God helped us to grow and expand a great deal during this season.

I am praying for a special anointing ministry in everyone's home. Praying all of you have a spirit of peace, comfort and unity.

Blessings,
Ali emoticon

wow it seems so many of us are on the same page sicknesses. busyness of the approaching holidays in between churches and just those difficult homeschooling moments . each situation is a stone that begins to settle on us to add to those feelings of regret , self doubt . guilt , frustration, and at moments wanting to throw our hands up in defeat emoticon theres moments when I want to respond to situations like my 2 year old niece crying screaming lying in the floor flailing wildly as its not fair repeatedly finds its way through my voice but then im reminded that if I were to do that my family may send me to a mental behavioral institute which probably wouldn't be bad but my work at home would definitely suffer emoticon so we just have to do what we ladies do best take a deep breathe count to 10 or 100 say " I am strong I got this " greater is he that is in me than he that's in the world ..God has placed each one of us in a special calling of being a wife to that husband you cherish so dear and to those kids that you would die for only you can treat and love and fulfill your families needs no one can take your place so for today and the rest of this month my prayer is for every wife and mother on this team to begin to pray for a special anointing for their ministry in the home emoticon

Trying to catch up. Sounds like break needs to come soon to some households.

I knew when I turnd the calendar for November it was going to be busy and boy has it. Not to mention getting a cold at the end of last week which my dh then got this week (only it seemed to hit him harder). So the last 7 days haven't been great food and exercise wise but today is a new day. Today is busy but I think tomorrow we are just going to church .

It's interesting about the church dilemma. When we started going to our current church the pastor was in the process of leaving and they were searching for one. Well after 2 plus years, 2 search teams, and some church "counseling" we now have a new pastor. There's a lot I could say but my bottom line is that if God is calling you to that church family don't be concerned about the pastor leaving. Just follow what God is telling you.

Val, being between church families is a hard place to be! It sounds like recharging is a good idea.

I crashed this week after a really good run with my goals. My husband had a surgery that laid him up for a week and I foolishly thought that I could do business as usual while he recovered. After a few days of caring for him, covering for some of his responsibilities and doing all the driving and parenting for my busy kids I couldn't even fit in my 10 minutes of exercise and didn't care enough to stay away from sugar.

I lean on Jesus though all the stress and I am continually impressed by how weak I am on my own. I forget to expect the weakness..you know what I mean? Than I surprise myself by falling flat on my face not just with health issues but with many things. Thank God that Jesus is there to pick us up! I am praying for the grace to start over.

Good evening! Thank you for the prayers and well-wishes.

This is horrible. The team goals haven't changed in a long time, and I don't even pay attention to them. If you sign up for a goal, you have a special place under "goals" (in your tracker section) where you can check the goal if you've completed it each day. Some goals automatically fill in. . . if you drink your 8 cups of water, I think it automatically checks your box in your goal section that you've done that. I'll start a thread somewhere on the message board and we can discuss if we'd like to set new goals as a group.

This has been a rough season for our family. We're currently looking for a new church, and we thought we had an option, and we've just learned that the pastor of the church wants to resign/retire as soon as a new pastor can be found. That feels complicated to us!

Also, the balance between "pushing" people to work and setting the bar high, and knowing when to back off and make sure everyone is emotionally charged is difficult for me right now. I've sensed that this needs to be a "recharge" week.

I found out Monday morning that my oldest son has had a recurrence of vision problems he was treated for as a 2-year-old, and I ought to have taken him in between then and now, and didn't, and so I feel awfully guilty for letting that slip and not doing something sooner to help him. It's hard to help him focus, and the eye-doctor thinks vision correction might help with his focus difficulties.

Anyway, that's a lot and run-on. I just feel so discouraged on so many fronts. And my dear mom-in-law stopped by with donuts and bagels this morning. And, oops, well, maybe I shouldn't think about where those donuts and bagels are now!. . . My only consolation was that today was a run day for me, too. It was FABULOUS rainy/cool weather for a jog. And so I'm only slightly over my calorie allowance, instead of outrageously out of bounds. Hmmph!!

Hope you all have a great Wednesday!

Good morning! Happy Veteran's Day! I am off today for the holiday, and thought I'd check in. I hope everyone's day is going well, and that those math lessons get done without complaint (speaking from my own past experience). emoticon
What are the team goals? How do those work? I plan on running today, as it will be the last nice day of the season, according to the news.
Have a blessed day!

Morning Friends,

Happy Monday! Another busy week for us. Remember to take time and enjoy your children in the mist of the busy, crazy days even with all the trials!

I just dropped by because I realized I have not joined all the goals of this team. I am not sure if that will help us move up, but thought I would give it a shot.

Blessings,

Morning,

Hope everyone has a blessed Sunday!

Yes, we have done a little of the timer and we have gotten more involved with different subjects at different times. I am not in a state where I miss the times we sit and do things with them. My dh does do math with them sometimes and goes over the chemistry at lease once a week. Both the timer and getting more involved have worked for us. The other thing my dd has had some focus issues and we had many talks with her on this. I agree this seems to be a season for some children. We also found after talking with my dd on this she preferred to do certain subjects at certain times. She mentally needed to do her math last for a while. This was important to her and it did help. She arranged the schedule to suit her learning style.

Hope all of this from everyone helps some Della. Enjoy even the frustrating moments as they are fleeting.

Blessings,
Ali emoticon

Good points, ValerX! I also think math can be "caught" if you do it with a kid and help them over the humps! Thanks for reminding me of that!

I don't have too much experience with dawdling. My kids are deeply motivated by the desire to finish their work and move on to other things It helps that we are in an active homeschool community and any day could have the opportunity to do something with friends once work is completed. If the work isn't done, they miss out.

On the other hand all my kids hit a snag with math around the age of 10. I think it was a combination of the foggy brain that comes with early puberty/growth spurts and the increasing challenge of mathematical concepts. My kids would take a long time to get through their math problems at that age. I found that I just had to get more involved with math and not see it as independent school work. I would sit with them and work through the lesson with them. For one child I only had to do this for about 6 months. For the other, I had to do it for 2 years and for the third, I saw it coming so I started working through lessons with him 2 days a week but carefully check in with him everyday and this is working so far. I may need to work through the lessons with him daily if he begins to struggle.

I am a busy mom so I want my kids to be independent in subjects but I am learning that it doesn't always work. emoticon

I was having that very problem with some of mine, Delia. My sister (of the 11 children. . .) suggested the following, some of which seem to be working with some of my kids. I'd also love to read other people's ideas! Dawdlers are such a sanctification/patience test for me, so I must be flunking, because I keep getting that test!

1. Set a 40 minute timer. Math will be done in 40 minutes, no matter how much gets done. If some people work ahead in the 40 minutes, they'll be done with school that much sooner come spring-time. People who fall behind will be working through the summer.

2. For the real dawdler, set timers within the 40 minutes. . . say, "see if you can do this section in 5 minutes." (Make sure you know that the child can actually do the section in that amount of time.) Keep the timer rolling.

3. Work for frozen peas, frozen berries, frozen corn, raisins (you get the idea). Say, "every problem you do in 5 (or ten, or whatever) minutes will earn you a berry (or whatever)." This is VERY popular at my house! When one child is dawdling and I offer this incentive, all the other children come flocking to do "fast math," too.

And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. Col. 3:23

We are still in the early elem. years here but I do use homeschool skedtrack to schedule and track any grades. It's free and this year I was fortunate to find most of my curriculum's course work there so all I had to do was import it!

Morning,

How is everyone? We have had a good week so far, just not as productive as we would like. We had dr. appointments yesterday and the dr. is an hour away so it takes all day. We did go vote and go to the chiropractor. What a day. I did manage to get some exercise in.

We did not grade too much until middle school. We have to in high school. I am using engrade this year to make a report card. I have many friends that use homeschool tracker and really like it. They use the free version. I have a mac and it is not set up for that. Anyone else on a mac?

O.K. I am not good at grading my childrens writing so we use an online program called Writeathome. I also wanted someone else to work with them before they went to college. This has been working well for us. My dd did it last year also.

Any other suggestions for making the high school years better?

Have a great day!

Blessings,

I grade papers and tests for my 7th, 9th and 11th graders. I actually need to schedule specific times in the week to make grading happen. If I am behind I like to take my stack to the library or a coffee shop and super-focus for an hour to catch up. I use teachers guides for most of their grading but found that I need rubrics for gading essays and research papers.

For my younger child I correct tests as she does them for math and English only so she can see how she is doing.

I need a grading trip or 2 to the coffee shop this week!

Uh oh! I hate to admit I do minimal grade tracking. I keep workbooks/ test booklets until they are done. Then, if the kids do a passable job on their end-of-the-year tests, I chuck the workbooks. I need to change this for my oldest daughter! Any hints?

We have tons of leaves to rake up after all that blustery wind. I got an hour outside today but there is much more todo. Maybe the extra exercise will nudge the scale along.

Morning,

It's very cold here in GA today. We were suppose to go to a horse/pony 4H show in honor of a good friend of mine that has gone to be with the Lord, however it is too cold and windy here. We will be changing our plans and doing something inside.

I have had a sinus infection and I am finally getting better, but my dd is just starting with it. Well she either has that or a cold and my ds just got over it. We do not need the weather outside.

Delia, glad you are better.

Hope everyone stays well.

I use a MAC so tracking grades can be different than on a PC. What do you all use to track grades?

Have a great day,
Blessings,

So glad to hear you felt better today, Delia! I'm thankful to be here to pull with you, but I can sure tell you I miss you when you're not here! Keep resting up, though, for a couple days, so you don't get sick from over-doing because you feel better. (I'm probably the only one who does that. . .y'all are such smart chicks!. . . I just get that hyper-active post-sickness enthusiasm going!)

I've been working really hard to keep my kids focused on school so they don't wander off between lessons and I've been working on keeping up with grading (it is my arch nemesis). So far this week has been pretty good. We've been trying out a new system of keeping on task and it is working. Woo Hoo!

Have a Blessed day!

Happy Monday,

It is nice to have school work mostly done for today. I teach a high school biology class on Monday afternoon and still have a lot to clean-up. It was kingdom FUNgus day. Yes, I am a geek!

There is lots more school activities the rest of the week and a church outreach on Halloween so it should be a basic busy school week this week.

I hope that your week looks good!

Morning,

We have had a beautiful weekend. We went to a state park yesterday, had a picnic lunch and went hiking. Well, I hiked with a friend while my ds fished with his friend and my dd explored with her friend. We had a great day. Today will be church and then BBQ. My ds BS troop sold BBQ plates as a fund raiser to raise money. This should make for a restful day!

Thanks for sharing Delia, I do not live that far for there so it would be a fun trip.

How's everyone's week look? Last week was busy, busy, busy! This week should be a little better. I like having time at home. I have so much to do. My dh got a deer last weekend and I always clean the freezer before putting the deer in each year and I have not got to that yet. This will be tomorrows project.

Have a blessed Sunday!

I did some trail walking with my DH today and then went to a cute café for coffee. I had 2 children home sick and 2 off with friends. Tomorrow there is church and a nursing home service for those of us who are well.

I am cutting out sugar and gluten beginning today! So far so good.

We were going to have several meals with my aunt and uncle, but they had to rush back home tonight because their adult single daughter was admitted tonight to the hospital with excruciating abdominal pain. It is a twisted colon, which is very operable.

Tonight my husband showed me how to disassemble and reassemble the dishwasher parts that need maintenance, so the kids and I can do that instead of him.

I think we'll slow the pace down a little bit and do maintenance/cleaning/planning for the coming week. We're exhausted from the company we had this week!

Morning,

Wow, it's been a week since I posted. I am just not on much except for the tracker. I have been trying to move more and get things done. I am slowly getting organized.

8XMAMA, I really like the tracker. I realized I did not move very much. It is one of those things that makes you see what you are really doing like when you track your food an realize you eat more/less than you thought.

2BTHINMAMA, How's the spelling coming?

Delia, Can I ask where you went to go that you had the caves? It sounds like fun!

Hope you all are having a great week.

Blessings,

Brussel sprouts are great in the fall too! There are a lot of different side dishes you could do with them.

Have a Blessed day!
