By increasing my exercising, and aiming for 10,00 steps daily I have raised my HDL by 10 points over 6 months.

My father and I have done decent at raising our HDL levels by taking vitamin D, along with getting a little sun exposure, reaching a testing level above 50ng/ml. I learned about this idea from Dr. Davis's sight.

Thank you for the advice. I have since lowered my overall cholesterol back into the normal range. The good cholesterol is still a little low, but the doctor is not concerned. No meds!

Check SparkPeople and see if there are any articles concerning increasing HDL; also do a key word search on the internet - just be sure it's a reliable source. Talk to your doctor and perhaps a dietician.

Here's a link that I found that may be helpful: http://www.realage.com/womens-health-guide

Are you on meds? At one point my doctor put me on meds for high cholesterol, but it lowered the good cholestrol too much. As a result, he took me off that medication. At this time, I'm not on medication, but am being monitored. We'll see what the next labs in June say.

If you are on medication, perhaps you need to discuss this with your doctor.

Wishing you all the best and keep us posted.

I only do ONE thing to raise my HDL. I take 1.5 grams of Niacin daily (yes, niacin that makes you flush). My last screening (November) was an HDL of 69*.4. The previous one was 84. Of course, my 2011 screening had a total of 309 and last November was 228. I DON'T worry about the overall number - I only concern myself with the ratio of HDL to LDL which in 2011 was 0.424
and last year was 3.29

I exercise almost daily - running, biking, strength training - something. I would worry less about your total number and try the niacin to raise your HDL

@Pat - thanks for the advice. What has confused me is that I thought the same thing that lowered my bad cholesterol would also raise my good cholesterol, but instead my good cholesterol went from 45 to 15! I have been taking the supplements and eating all the recommended foods, but I only started exercising 2 weeks ago. Maybe that is my missing link?

@shielda1 - I am hoping that is it. I only started exercising 2 weeks ago. I started eating right 6 weeks ago. Maybe the good cholesterol will go up the longer I exercise! Thanks!
