Hubby got his report on his blood work yesterday. His numbers look pretty good with the exception of the ldl. That's pretty high.Something to keep working on.
I am sure my numbers are bad but I am hoping with more activity and devotion to my exercise routine they are improving.

Good morning all.

Went to regular doctor for a checkup. He was gregs dr so he asked me how I am coping with his death. He ended up subscrbing a mild antidepressent. In addition to the weight gain, I get angry too easily and cry over everything. He also did blood work, so hopefully he wont find anything there,

My live in bf passed away recently and I am attempting to get myself back on track.

So worked hard and got a new badge on the fitbit app yesterday. Redwood Forest. If you manage 25 flights of stairs a day you get that badge. Can't say I am aiming for that every day but I will try some.
Maybe one of these days I will try the step mill at the gym again. It kind of bit me when I tried before. If I were to start doing that I think I would get a lot of stair flights in.
Now if I could just get inspired to get my eating in shape. I know I am eating less right now but I need to be eating the right kinds of things too.

Okay it's Jan 22 but I am kind of thinking of this as the new year now.
I got a fitbit yesterday and am going to try to be faithful with using it and getting in to log my food on the tracker there.
Would really like to see this be a forum of encouragement.
I need it!!!!

Just found this forum. Looks like it might be flowing again?

I'm eating oatmeal, on a statin, and back into my exercise routine although routine is used loosely here. I never wanted a medical reason to keep up nutritionally or exercise.
I've been using SP menus, but there are only 11 options for dinner and not really a fan of most of them, not to mention my boys can't stand them either.

Recipes for dinner that are family friendly?

All the standard reccomendations will help some.
I take Cholestoff (a naturemade plant statin supplement)
Eating oatmeal or other items high in soluble fiber helps,
Chia seed or flax helps.
Exercise helps,
More plant based foods helps.
If your cholesterol is pretty high, you might have to be pretty rigid to make it change.
Vegan diets work and extra exercise as well but you have to balance that with what else you want in life.
Most doctors will recommend moderate changes. If you have pretty stubborn high cholesterol moderate changes will not do the trick.
I always advise against red yeast rice supplements as they are like taking a statin and not regulated.
That's my 2 cents worth pretty late after your post.

Good question. This depends upon whether your high cholesterol is strictly diet and exercise related or if it is genetically high. I, for example, was tested and found to have the genetic form of high cholesterol. That means that I can exercise a lot and eat only the healthiest foods and my cholesterol will still be very high because my body genetically processes it differently. Have you been tested to determine if you have genetic high cholesterol? If you are not sure, check out the link for information: https://thefhfoundation.org/

Question for anyone who can help!!!!!!!
What is a good way to lower cholesterol without using statins?
Really tired of taking them and they do cause damage so would like to try to find something
different to take. Garlic and Omega 3 don't lower as my husband tried this. His numbers were higher. Thanks

Hi NewLibrarian,

Sorry no one has responded to you. I was off for awhile. Not sure where the leadership for this group is because I rarely see responses.

You asked about beets. Try this link: http://www.livestrong.com/article/108160-l

Also, my favorite beet recipe (link provided) and my husband, who always hated beets is completely hooked on this recipe: http://www.marthastewart.com/1050727/roast

I am happy to encourage you and help in any way I can! What can I help with?

In all honesty I read a post about familial vs. lifestyle related cholesterol.
I know my cholesterol is controllable by lifestyle. Just haven't been doing it.
It's pretty bad right now.

I have familial hypercholesterolemia so genetically my cholesterol is high and it is processed differently by my body. Does anyone here have that?

Chalice - Thanks for your informative story. Hope your numbers have gone down since you wrote it. I need to get my number down.

I also had problems with the Statins' and will not take them so I've been working on diet change - not exercising as much as I want to - another change i want to make - LOL

I just went to look for the books that you mentioned - found them on "HALF.COM" starting at $.75 each.

Again thank for your story - hope to be able to do something similar...Keep up the great work... emoticon

I am trying to work on better exercise habits. Got to the gym for about a 1/2 hour solid workout today. I am trying to add 5 minutes cardio a day.
Right now I am really spreading my weights but next week I will be doing more sets per day.
Trying to eat my fruits and veggies.

Vegan diets are great for reducing cho. I am not vegan YET
Excercise does a lot to help your HDL.
Just a thought. I didn't notice much about exercise here.

I just wanted to give some encouragement to those of us who are trying to lower our cholesterol numbers by telling my story.

I had triple bypass surgery five years ago and have not been successful using statin drugs to control my numbers. I had lots of side affects...especially muscle and tendon problems...as my cardiologist tried different medicines and dosages without success.

Last October, my chol. was 211, with LDL at 145, triglycerides at 123, and non-HDL chol. at 170. Not much to show for 4+ years of tinkering with medicine and on-again-off-again traditional calorie-counting dieting.

It was at that point that my cardiologist suggested that I try a newly-FDA-approved medicine for people who don't tolerate statins all that well. The down side includes the fact that it is a new drug, so who knows what long-term effects might be, and it requires me to inject myself when administering the drug. As it happened, I was frustrated enough to begin reading about other things I might do to help me get my numbers down. I was looking for foods that might help. I came across several books written by a local doctor, Terry Shintani, who has had success getting people to lose weight and get their cholesterol numbers way down, with some people getting off the meds altogether. I read several of his books, and especially liked "Eat More, Weigh Less" which lays out a diet high in complex carbs, bordering on a vegan diet. I opted to try that in lieu of the new drug, with my cardiologist's consent. I stayed on 20mg of atorvastatin (a generic equivalent of Lipitor) at her request.

Using Dr. Shintani's book and loosely following his recommendations (my meals are usually vegan, and quite simple rather than using the recipes in the book, because I like simple foods). Following his recommendations, I don't fret if family functions lead to off-diet eating for a day, now and then. If I am at an office party or some other function, I judiciously, partake in non-vegan foods, but in reasonably small quantities. When I am eating out, if there happens to be some cheese in a salad, I don't worry about it and eat the whole salad. When I am home, though, I am strictly vegan - no dairy and no meat, fish or animal byproducts like eggs.

From the beginning, I was surprised to learn how easy it was for me to eat this way, and liked being able to fill up on things like roasted beets and asparagus or a roasted sweet potato if I was particularly hungry. I make a mean kale smoothie for breakfast, with turmeric and ginger roots, chia seeds, pineapple, frozen unsweetened strawberries, and spinach (three cups of kale and spinach to two cups of fruit). I have also learned to use dried beans for all sorts of weekend crock pot meals. For me, counting calories on a traditional portion-controlled diet has always left me hungry and fighting my own body chemistry. The foods Dr. Shintani suggests are very filling, so it is not easy to over-eat. I also strictly limit sodium and use no added sugar in any form, honey included.

Well, fast forward to today, I met with my cardiologist and reviewed the lab results from my recent lipid profile. In less than four months by cholesterol has dropped to 126, triglycerides are 95, LDL cholesterol is now 70, and non-HDL cholesterol is 89. I was blown away...as was my delighted cardiologist.

I've never had such an easy time dieting because I am rarely hungry. I eat lots of vegetables and fruit, legumes, and whole grains, all of which are filling. My weight is dropping steadily too.

I'm writing this to encourage people to read Dr. Shintani's book as he lays out the science behind the foods and his approach works well with the spark people trackers. Obviously, I am not suggesting anyone do anything without consulting with their doctors first. I just thought some folks here might find this approach interesting. You can get his book used on Amazon.com for under $5 as I recall.

Going forward:

My HDL dropped three points, so I will be modifying the vegan approach to add wild salmon and yellowfin tuna on occasion, because they are reportedly good for increasing HDL along with red grapes and a few other items that have the same effect without increasing LDL cholesterol. Sorry for being so long-winded, but I thought some of you might like to consider this approach if you are having difficulties with cholesterol numbers.

(By the way, my next cardiology appointment is in six months, when we will consider dropping the medicines altogether if things continue to improve.) I still have to get more weight off, but I expect to continue with the help of Spark People's site and Dr. Shintani's books.

Started Lipitor generic a few weeks ago and I'm getting terrible pain in my hip. Some days can barely get up from a sitting position. Could this be a side affect?

I like that Spark tracks cholesterol in the food tracking, but it doesn't seem to differentiate between bad fats and good fats eaten. So, some days I am over my cholesterol goal, but it is because i ate foods like sardines that are high in cholesterol but really good fats (mono, poly, etc.)

once they start u on medication can they or will they ever take you off. will doctors see if you can lower cholesterol by diet and exercise. Had a very bad time with Lipitor and now they want to put me on another kind but i am not sure what to do. the articles that u read on line are very conflicting. I just want to know if anyone here has lowered their cholesterol with just diet and exercise. What kind of diet did you follow.

Exercise is always a big part of the plan.
I know my husband exercises more than I do and his numbers are still creeping up with age.
His triglycerides are pretty awful which is supposed to be weight and exercise.
We shall see. I know my numbers will improve if I can manage to lose weight but they will not improve enough. Pretty sure I am destined for statins.

Hang in there. I know how you feel. Sometimes I feel like I'm trying to eat so healthy to get my cholesterol down and nothing helps. It was down somewhat but still a bit high. I really need to work on this before I see the doctor in February. I'm eating low fat, fiber, etc. What else can I do? Any suggestions will be welcomed.

I'm so frustrated. I want to go to a dietitian and my doctor will send an order to the hospital but I have to check with insurance. Who said they'd pay all of it but have to check with Medicare first to see if they pay. Called them and they don't pay, but my insurance called through while I was on with Med. Called insurance back, no record that anyone tried to call. Called back later to see if any record and asked same question of that guy and he was so confusing that I just told the doctor's office to forget it. Nurse said to google diabetes diet and follow that.

I want someone I can talk to and get answers and being a picky eater what tips they have. I don't think my DH is fond of the idea thinks we'll have to pay big bucks in the end.

I feel like just going back to my old way of eating....craving chocolate now. I've had a bowl of cereal and small tub of diced peaches no sugar added today. Not sure what to do for supper. I have been tracking and cholesterol has been in range, but calories, protein and fiber have all been under.

I have been watching what I eat, eating more fiber and exercising. This week I gained 1 1/2 pounds which is a bit discouraging. I go back to the doctor in May and hope my cholesterol is down. I'm not sure what I did wrong this week. I feel great, have energy, my clothes seem bigger, just don't have a clue this week. Oh well, I'll see what next week brings.

So far I'm thinking I'm doing well. I'm eating more fiber and really watching everything else I eat. I do love cheese though and am trying not to eat so much of it. I go back to the doctor in May and we will see what happens. Hope everyone is having a great week.

I am also trying to keep my cholesterol down to avoid meds, the doc told me omega 3 exercise, and watch fat intake.I found it helpful also to see a dietician ,which is covered by our health care here in Canada.Metamucil is good if you don't get enough fibre.Reading labels on your food regarding fat percentage also helps.Read up about lowering cholesterol and if you follow it ,it will work.Your Doc can also do a test to see if your cholesterol is something that runs in your family .Rambling on so hope some of this helps.

I was at the doctor today and my bad cholesterol was up a bit. It was 110 and my good cholesterol was 44. I'm not sure what I should be eating to get it my bad cholesterol down again. I've been exercising and trying to eat right. Would eating more fiber help? Any suggestions, I'm confused. I've been on this team for awhile but have not posted much. Thanks.

A desirable level of HDL is 60 or higher, levels less than 50 for women, and 40 for men increase the risk of heart disease....A desirable level of LDL (bad cholesterol) is less than 100,the lower your LDL is,the better.....Sharyn This information comes from Dr.Weil,MD.

Hi Everyone. I am trying to get to the skinny about cholesterol test values. I found out the hdl should be no more than 30 diff from the ldl. I think it's good to know because it might calm the jitters from the resulting total cholesterol. I am going to have a shake a day and follow this discussion. I am praying for everyone's results to get to the range of healthy. I am also praying for your support. Thanks all. Love this group.

Hi everyone! I am going to be attached to this forum with both fists. I had my Dr appt on Monday, and Tuesday found out my total cholesterol was up to 361, the last test was October 2013, at 228 total!! I have been losing weight since July of 2014, but evidently not doing it right. Today I went to the store and bought almond milk, low fat yogurt and fruit and will begin making a smoothie a day. I look forward to reading your success stories- and thanks for the forum.

If you're tired of starting over, never give up.
