Hi...just saw this team on a friend of a friend's page. I've been on SP for a few years and am fairly close to goal (with some ups/downs along the way).

Trying to get a FT job teaching sociology (currently an adjunct) in SFL. Looking forward to getting to know this team!

I gained weight working on my masters. My best friend from grade school is working on her masters right now and now she totally relates to what I was going through.
I have lost 61 lbs. with sparkpeople. I belonged to the big teacher team but every time I went to comment on someone's blog it would be by someone belonging to wicca, who can't spell, or posted pictures from a bar. I'm not a snob but I think teachers should have standards. I can have as much fun as the next person but I think we have to be discrete.
I wanted to try out a new teacher team so I'm trying this one.

I've been on SP since Jan and just found this team. I'm a Chemistry Professor and Department Head. For me it was the stress of the job and the demands of being a mom that kept me from being healthy. When my youngest started kindergarten, I started working on my health.

SP helps keep me sane with the challenges of my job and being a mom.

Hello! As I was contemplating another blog post on my dissertating, it occurred to me that there might be a team for academics. Woohoo!

For me it's depression, not grad school per se, that's led me to put on the weight. I really need to feel like a stronger, more effectual person. So, this year's goals: get fit and finish the diss.

Welcome KITTERKATTER42 and DRAMBERT! It's great to see more people joining the team. With the fall semester right around the corner it's a great time to plan for weight loss and healthy living alongside the stress of grading, research, writing, and committee work.

I am a 38 year old assistant professor of early childhood development (since fall 2008). I finished my Ph.D. in the spring of 2009...up to that point I didn't put on the freshmen 15...it was more like the graduate 45. I began my program right after having my last child and ate a lot on the road driving to campus (1 1/2 hours away). I started Weight Watchers in the spring of 2009 and was successful in losing about 60 pounds by the end of the year. As the new year rolled around I slowly gained about 10 pounds which I have knocked off with SparkPeople. I am thrilled to have found this site and to get in better shape and health before I turn 40 and to be able to keep up with my job.

If you think you can...you can.
If you think you can't...think again.

Hello everyone! I'm excited to find this page. I'm beginning the 4th year of my PhD program which means beginning exams and dissertation writing. I'm studying 19th c. British Literature. I'm also a teaching assistant during the school year and an adjunct during the summer months when I teach online. I'm finding it difficult to balance studying for exams, teaching, eating healthy, and exercising which has resulted in me gaining weight. I'm looking forward to meeting others here and learning strategies for keeping on top of my academics and my health!

Hi everyone. I'm new to SparkPeople and ooooh am I glad to have found this team!

I'm here after packing on the pounds during two years in a PhD program that was just a bad fit from the start. I ended up leaving my program with an MS and now I'm trying to shake the pounds (and the dropout guilt) while doing some bioengineering lab work and starting the whole PhD application process over again.

Needless to say it's a stressful time, but I'm feeling hopeful about getting healthy and about jumping back into academia. I'm glad I have this little "real world" break to focus on my health first, though. :)

So, hi. I look forward to getting to know you all - any other microbiologists on the team?

Welcome BABYDECOY! We're glad to have you as part of the team. The tenure-track is tough on a healthy lifestyle. Go you for getting on top of it now along with the anxiety.

Oh, thank goodness for this group. I've started off the introductions for my other groups discussing "work-related stressors and anxieties" as a major hurdle. And now, I see that there's a group who really knows what that means.

I'm an assistant professor, halfway through the tenure track in an "applied social sciences" field (edit to add: in a Research University with "high," but not "very high," research activity. Thank you, Carnegie). I've been gaining and losing the same 15 pounds (at least!) since undergrad, though. I've been stuck for the past year and a half or so in "gain" mode.

Like I said, anxiety is a major issue for me. Writing, teaching, budgetary concerns... it is getting to me. I'm trying to get on the ball not only for physical reasons (although the promise of a week on a beach at the end of summer session is enticing...) but also to develop more positive coping mechanisms and take care of myself outside of my career.

Hello academics,

I have been thinking recently that I wished there was a team of people in academia. Trust sparkpeople to have one, and I'm so glad. I kept wishing there were other sparkers who could understand my peculiar lifestyle.

I've been on spark since October and have lost 20 lbs so far. I have about 10 to go. Wee-hee! I'm so psyched about this progress; it's the first time in my life I've (positively) changed my eating habits and exercised like this. I'm in a new situation now though. Some background:

I started my first tenure-track job last August after adjuncting for a couple of years. It's a job I really like but it's in Texas and I'm from upstate New York, where my live-in boyfriend continues to live and finish a PhD. So I went down to Texas on my own and shockingly decided to use my new cash flow and loneliness to my benefit by hiring a relatively inexpensive personal trainer at the University gym and cooking healthy food. It's worked like a charm. Now for the change. I'm very happily back at home with my boyfriend, parents, and all my friends (not all in the same apartment), and I am hoping that I can continue my good habits in this new old place. I gained about 25 lbs while living with my boyfriend before I left, so I am a little anxious. I've been home for a week and so far things have been good but I'm a bit nervous. Maybe that nervousness and fear will motivate me positively as they do with writing.
(I also have much anxiety about writing, about him finishing his dissertation so he can get a job and about the state of our country and the world...but mostly writing.)

Nice to meet you. You all seem like a great, friendly, supportive group.

--Amy

I am currently working on my second Masters; this one in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling. My first was in School Counseling--which I never put to use. Anyway, between school and a part time job as a dispatcher, my weight has really gone up. Love the computer and love SP but so far haven't gotten off the computer and into any exercise gear! Thought maybe more teams and more interaction with people would help.

Hi everyone,

I'm the associate director for the Center for High Performance Computing at the University of Utah and I'm also working on an Executive MBA. What I need most is more time!

I really want, no NEED to get this weight off. My goal is by my birthday in November to be at my goal weight, and I have a "sub-goal" to meet by my son's wedding celebration.

I am 52 years old, have three grown children and two grandsons (3 and NB). My second grandson was just born this past Christmas Eve.

Hello, all.

I teach composition, and I've just moved from a large research university to a tiny community college (complete with faculty chilli cook-offs and cookie exchanges, oh my!). The teaching load here is double what I am used to. How do all of you balance teaching loads, research or writing, and weight loss?

Welcome! Congratulations on the new job and the decision to get healthy. I hope you find a lot of support on Spark People.

I'm a historian, too, though my area is early-20th century United States.

Let the team know how the new job is and what support you need/ questions you have.

Hello all! I just joined SP today and I am really excited about getting serious with weight loss this time. I'm not systematic al all when it comes to track down diet and fitness goals, so I hope this website can truly help me.

I'm a 32 year-old PhD in Ancient History (Roman Historiography), and I just got a great job as lecturer in a young and friendly History dept. Thing is, the red tape before I start is taking longer than I expected, and the position is in another town. So all my plans and routine are a bit of a mess, because I have no idea when I'm going to move. I've never lived away from my hometown, so it's a bit scary...

Anyway, nice to find this group! I'm looking forward to achieve the goals I have set here.

Hi All. I'm new to the team, though I've been on SP a little over six months. I've reached my first weight loss goal, and am feeling like I have a pretty good handle on my new eating and exercise habits. So now I'm trying to apply what I've learned about goal setting and structure to finish my book manuscript.

I'm a historian and I work full time in a university position that doesn't give me research time. I'm working to turn my dissertation into a book, but that needs to happen in the wee hours and on weekends, in conjunction with a stressful job.

I'm looking forward to getting to know the members of this team, continuing to get healthy, and maybe do some scholarship along the way!

I'm thrilled to join this team. I also have a masters in counseling/psychology and planned to start on my PhD this semester, but alas, I must start next fall after an unforeseen move. I work as a counselor in a local college, and I have never sat behind a desk so much in my life. It is literally killing me!

Hi Everyone, I hope this reaches you in good health and spirit. I have a Master's degree in Clinical and Counseling Psychology and currently hold an adjunct professor in Psychology position at the local university. My husband is in the Air Force, and we moved specifically in a location close to a doctoral program, but wouldn't you know that he's been deployed so much that I couldn't start the program! Military life is "Mission first...family last" (at least that is how it feels so much of the time!) When I'm not teaching, I do some clinical/counseling contract work. I gained most of my weight during and after my master's program; I got into the nasty habit of skipping meals, eating fast, and eating in response to stress. I even eat to avoid writing my progress notes! I am looking for a spark community that is smaller and with more cohesion. Thanks, in advance, for letting me accompany ya'll (a little Texas in there) in your journey. CC

Hi everyone --

It's so great to find this team!! My Phd is from 1994. I teach Victorian lit and the novel. I really need to get both my career and my body into shape -- revitalize myself generally. I've been on Spark for years now, off and on (mostly off), but I'm hoping this time will do it for me. Finding support and community is a priority -- this team looks like the right place to look for them!

I am so delighted to have found you all!

I am a tenured professor in a health professional school. So many of your introductions resonated with me! I worked full time in my academic setting while completing my PhD and it took many years with many twists and turns. Additional twists and turns happened after I got the PhD and tenure. The last two years have been particularly rocky with family stuff that made work stuff very stressful. I literally fuelled my way through my troubles with food and have a 35 pound surplus to show for it. Things are better now but the surplus stubbornly remains.

As someone else here said, there will never be a calm time to tackle the weight loss so I am starting now. I am very grateful to have found a group of people who understand the very odd stresses we face in this kind of work. I have a wonderful life and would like to work on sustaining equally wonderful health.

Looking forward to meeting you all!
Nova

Hello academia team,

I am happy to see that there are others here that teach at university level. I will be teaching my first graduate level architecture course starting september, while working in the field full time. It's like a dream come true for me to have this appointment, but also a bit terrifying. One of my main motivations for keeping fit right now is to feel confident in front of the classroom. Anyway, nice to meet you! -J

Hi all.

I just came by this team and thought this group might actually understand the process I'm going through. I really enjoy my other main team, but feel bad that I can't log in every day. I'm basically all but dissertation at this point (as long as I can get my dissertation proposal submitted and accepted this before the fall) and getting my PhD in Educational Psychology. So I have found it very difficult to stick to any fitness schedule or to make meals that are healthy. I live an hour away from campus and am a single mother of an 8 y.o. daughter with special needs. So most of my time is taking care of her, working on my studies, and driving.

I'll chime in again soon, but wanted to at least introduce myself. And by the way...

Kateallen,
I LOVE blue morpho butterflies! Actually, I love most butterflies, but that one is my favorite.

Hello to you all. And welcome SuperL99.

My classes start tomorrow and I am ready to be back. I'll have some new classes to teach and some new routines. I've really let things slide while I've been on vacation (e.g. bedtimes have gotten later and later, chores haven't been kept up, too much screen time, etc.)

I have taken some time for fun during our break. Last week, I took off with a friend for the day. We spent the morning taking a tour of the local Chinese gardens, had lunch, and then went to see the movie "Doubt." The movie is excellent (e.g. great writing and acting) but not light fare; We spent the rest of the afternoon talking about its themes.

I hope to get off on a good foot tomorrow. After I finish this week, I'll be headed off on a business trip to Mexico for a week. I will take off one day for a whale watching trip with some biologists who fund their marine mammal research by taking tourists out (now why didn't I think of that!)

Here's to a good week for all of us.

Kate

Hi all, I'm a post-doctoral researcher in neurobiology in Scotland. The last several months were spent at my desk writing papers, which mean I got a lot less exercise than when I'm in the lab. That combined with some other factors means I'm not nearly as fit as I'd like. Glad to see other academics around!

Hi. I just joined this forum and am stopping by to introduce myself as I re-commit myself to success on this journey to weight loss and health. I'm 48 and have been in academia all of my adult life (my Ph.D. is in psychology), although I've never landed tenure. I "perished" for lack of sufficient publications at the one tenure-track job I held. That was 12 years ago. Since then I've been fortunate to spend most of my time on one-year full-time contracts, thereby earning benefits and a living-wage salary, but I did spend 2.5 years patching together a variety of adjunct positions, teaching four or five classes a term at three different colleges (with no benefits and a salary half of what I earn with a full-time contract). The year-to-year nature of my jobs has been very stressful (I typically spend each January to March in a state of high anxiety, since it's typically in early March that I learn whether or not I have a position for the next year), and although I lost 95 pounds (through illness) 8 years ago, most of that has been very slowly creeping back (at about 9 pounds a year). Hence here I am.

Hi. This seems like a group where I might fit and so I've joined the team.

I'm just turning 50 and am happily returning to the faculty of a small psychology department after some service as an administrator. I teach in a doctoral program and love the work. I have 2 sons; one is a college sophomore and the other is almost 6. My husband, retired from the org-com faculty and part-time non-profit administration, has been disabled for about 8 years.

I've finally begun to realize that the academic cycle and the stress of my life is never going to abate and if I'm going to loose the weight I've accumulated, I'll need to plan and fit the effort into my always overly-busy life.

I'll look forward to getting to know you.

Kate

Welcome Tiffany, You are in a great place to start to realize your goals. I know what you mean about being out of your comfort range, but look at all you've accomplished and where you are heading. Call on this group to help and motivate you.
