I finished my PhD in religion about 3 years ago, and I have found it very difficult to find a job. When the economy tanked, so did the endowments of seminaries. In addition, I can't seem to get interviews for jobs in other field. I guess I am not sure what to do next, and I was wondering if there were any other folks out there in this position. It is really causing me to feel depressed, and it is hard to get going and feel motivated.

Anyone else facing loss of degrees?

In MO, Gov. Nixon is forcing all public institutions to undergo program review and all underperforming degrees must justify their existence. Underperforming is defined as less than 10 bachelors, 5 masters, and 3 Ph.D. graduates each year for the last 3 years.

I'm dept. head of Physical Science at a regional most undergraduate university. Biochem/Chem, Med Tech, and Physics are on the chopping bloc.

Just wondering if there are others in MO in the same boat and if other states are doing this as well.

Happy start of the semester, everyone! What's on your plate this term?

Even though I don't work directly with students, this time of year is infectious. Everything seems so full of promise! I attended the College Reception two days ago and got a new 'do yesterday to mark the end of my icky summer and the start of a new season of possibility.

I'm Sue, and I won't let fear hold me back.

It feels so odd not to have homework, and not to even have the next classes to look forward to!!

This is my second Masters, and I promised my husband we would not sit through another LONG ceremony to get an empty diploma case. Maybe when I get the diploma in the mail I'll pose with my old gown/hat for a picture! LOL I'd be more excited about finding a job now...

It's finals week. I'm looking forward to transitioning to summer and digging into all that other work I've been meaning to get to. I'm attending one conference and have two writing deadlines. Students wonder why I laugh when they tell me "have a great summer!"

It's probably a good time to focus on my exercise routine more as well. I'm really happy with my progress, but I'm wondering what I can do a bit differently this summer to keep up the momentum. I also need a few more summer pieces. All the shorts I had last summer are way too big!

Congratulations on graduating, KathiRae!

I walked through all my graduation ceremonies, and I'm glad I did, but I know that not everyone is as into pomp and circumstance as I am. I hope you find some other meaningful way to mark the occasion.

Runner, are you working on your Masters or PhD thesis?

Hope everyone is doing well! I am starting to get excited... I graduate this semester!! One more (longish) paper to write and then I am FINISHED with my Masters degree. Saw my name on the list of graduates today and it got my blood sizzling; had to share. I am not going through the ceremonies, (held on May 1) but it was exciting to see my name there anyway...

I'm getting ready to start my thesis. I basically have to do a literature review which will take at least a month and I've been putting it off. There's just always so much other stuff to do.

Just bopped in to say a quick hello! Sounds like you are all busy too! emoticon

My CRC exam came and went; but I won't find out how I did on it until they see my transcripts to prove I have my degree! Frustrating. Have done my best to put it out of my mind until I get the score as there is nothing I can do about it until then...

Meanwhile I am finishing my last two classes. As always the toughest few projects are at the end of the semester, and exams. Only two classes this time around so that helps!! Four almost killed me last semester. :)

Gotta keep on keeping on. Have managed to drop 10 pounds since finding SP, still need to add exercise to the routine as I know it would help lots.

Here's to all of us; and our goals!! Thanks for being here for me!

My paper was accepted this week! It will be online for prepublication in a week or 2. It's in the journal Blood, which is really good for my field. I'm really excited!

Way to go, runner! Next week is the big conference in my field. It's usually a little bittersweet for me--I work for the professional society that puts it on and I love getting a chance to connect to our members in person. At the same time, it's hard to hear about all the exciting new research going on when my job doesn't afford me any time to do some of my own. (sigh!)

Today the lady at the coffee shop gave me a 'free' cinnamon roll and I didn't eat it! I feel like I made a huge step forward in changing my eating habits!

Kathie, I hope the exam went well! Let us know, OK?

MissCourtness rocks for a good presentation and a too big suit jacket! Awesome you!!!

I'm taking a few days off of work, then off to a conference, then a few more days off. All told, I'll be away from the office for 10 days. Daunting, but also much needed.

Is anyone doing anything fun for spring break?

Just thought I'd pop in and mention that I am taking my CRC (certified rehabilitation counselor) exam tomorrow morning. Nervous but not scared. Mostly praying I can put it to good use once I get the credential and not have wasted time and money getting it...

My presentation was yesterday afternoon. It went really well. I'm very happy with it. The suit jacket I was going to wear? Was too big! Good thing I had a sweater to wear as a back up. There were photos taken there and I have to say I'm really happy with them. My talk was also recorded. I have no idea what they intend to do with it. I'm almost too scared to ask.

Ya'll sound busy! Good luck with it all.

My presentation went pretty well. It was taped for the local t.v. station, so if I get brave I might ask the station for a copy of the DVD, so I can check out ways to improve with my public speaking.... not my strong suit!

Way to go with the food and hydration, Kate! That's at least part of the equation. As for exercise, I'm a big fan of the 10 minute lap around the block. Sometimes that all I can manage in a given day, but it's better than nothing.

I'm Sue, and I won't let fear hold me back.

I am crazy busy these days.

I just came back from two conferences (back to back) in Florida to learn that our department assitant had to go in for emergency surgery. She will be OK but out for 6 weeks. Meanwhile I am working on our department's accreditation self-study, a few dissertations, classes, and faculty searches. Husband and kids are maintaining. Throughout the semester, I've been doing well with food and hydration but not so with exercise.

Onward, Kate

I'm working on a talk for the alumni association at the end of the month. It's finally starting to come together and I'm getting more confident about presenting. I still need to put together the PowerPoint and get some more images, but I'm starting to feel confident about it. Next week I will worry about what to wear.

Hi All,
Since this team doesn't have a chat thread, I thought I'd throw one out and see if anyone has anything they'd like to contribute.

So... what's going on with you all, your work, your efforts to be healthy?

I'm making a public presentation of some of my research tonight. I'm not done my prep, and I'm supposed to be at the office all day. Feeling a little nervous, but also knowing it'll be fine. I've done this type of thing plenty of times before.

I'm Sue, and I won't let fear hold me back.
