I went back to Ichiban Kan a couple days after my first visit and found it much better stocked--apparently if what you want is out of stock, all you have to do is wait a day or two. I spent about $36.00 (including shipping, which does go up the more you spend--it is not a flat fee as suggested in another post, but it was still a very reasonable $8+ for my order). I got a few different bento boxes, bands, egg molds, rice molds, sauce bottles, chopsticks, etc. I can't wait for my order to arrive.

There are still several boxes, bags, and molds that I really liked, but they were out of stock, so I'll probably place another order when I see those things back in stock again. What a great site!

I just went to the Ichiban Kan site....I spent 30 dollars(shipping included.) I am officially in love with that site, I wish there were more like it. Better yet, they should just open a store in the St. Louis Area....that would be wonderful! I can't wait for my boxes to get here, I bought like, 5 of them. Now..those egg molds need to come back in stock, a set of 2 for 1.50..you can't beat that.

Wal-Mart started carrying Lock & Lock storage systems and I LOOOOVE them! I bought a three pack for 5 or 6 bucks and I use them almost every day. I love Lock & Locks because they're leak-proof and very durable.

Here's an example of where you can buy it if you don't have a Wal-Mart around.

I will be making my first bento next week. However, my "bento box" will be a nifty little 2-compartment food tray with a snap-on lid from the dollar store, which has a fork and knife that snap into the lid. I figured... first time... $1... I can afford it :)

That site was great, Elaine! Thanks so much! As for there being no bento boxes left, I did find one:

http://www.ichibankanusa.com/s.nl/it.A/id.2443/.f?sc=13&category=171

I can't believe it's only $1.50! Get it quick before it's sold out! Everything's so cute and cheap and the stock does seem to change every few days. ^__^

I got $15 worth of really cute stuff! I'm really excited to get it all in the mail! I love getting packages!

Thanks for all the great links. I don't think I'll have any trouble finding bento boxes now, and Bento TV is a great resource. I just watched the first 20 episodes and learned a lot!

Ravendas was obviously a lot faster then me in placing an order at Ichiban Kan. They do have great prices, but they have more items out of stock than in. There was not one single bento box that wasn't out-of-stock. I will have to keep checking back and watching for new shipments.

Elaine, thanks so much for posting that website! They have so many cute bento items for cheap! But they sure go fast! I'd made up a cart full of stuff last week that I planned to buy for myself as a treat if I made my goals for the week...but the site went down all weekend so i couldn't place my order...then when it came back up, most of the things in my cart were sold out. :(
But, I did find some alternatives and ended up getting three bento boxes, a belt, two sets of chopsticks, some dividers, and a rice mold all for $17 (and that's including S&H)! Wow! you can't get one box for that anywhere else. I can't wait until they come in. :)

Laptop lunches are great! I have one too. They're fantastic for low-density foods, and for guys, both because they hold more calories and because they don't look all cutsey. :)

Ichiban Kan, the dollar store in San Francisco's Japantown, now sells stuff online. They carry a lot of random bento equipment.
www.ichibankanusa.com/

They're all pretty low-volume, though, so if you're looking for a bento box that's over 600 ml, I'd try jbox.com first.

I recently purchased 2 Tupperware Meal Solutions sets (on ebay) and just love them! They're large enough to take a meal plus 2 snacks, and very similar in style to Mr. Bento.

Tempura's actually pretty easy -- just remember that the water needs to be ice cold.

Konnichiwa! Hi All,

I'm new to this team. I live in Tokyo suburb, so I have easy access to all things Japanese. I know, I know ... don't hate me?! **grins**

My kids take snacks to school in their little character "tight Box" bento. My daughter's fave is Cinnamon (Sanrio), and my son's fave is LightningMcQueen. I have a cute Hello Kitty (also Sanrio) that I take w/ on long JR train rides into.

We have HUGE fancy bento at the local Jusco (like Sears), in fact I just mailed a dinner set to my Dad for his Bday in New England area. He was ecstatic. I also included some local hashi and pottery tea service.

Now all I have to do is save up my Y900 (about $9.00) for my own fancy huge bento. and learn how to make proper tempura shrimp and veg.

Got mine at Jbox. Here it is: jbox.com/PRODUCT/PRIM024. But I recently discovered you can get it cheaper at Sugar Charms. I'm totally coveting this one from Sugar Charms, too: tinyurl.com/2je3ve. I think when they get the assorted divider cups back in stock, though. I really need those, and I'd like to combine shipping.

I bought my bento box on eBay (popular choice) from http://stores.ebay.com/JAPAN-SOUVENIR and all my supplies were from http://stores.ebay.com/Bento-Obento-Shop.

My box is a 2 tier Nightmare Before Christmas box (580 ml total size) and I have a load of accessories, but of course want more!

I had great luck with both eBay stores! And have nothing but positive things to say.

I bought ours from an eBay store called Bento Obento. She's based in CA, I think.

I ordered them last week, and haven't received them yet, but I'll be glad to post a review of her service and products when they arrive. She has tons of positive feedback, though. She also runs the website called Bento TV.

Oh super! I just bought some items from tokyo_gift - I'm glad you had a good experience with them.

One ebay seller I really like is irrashai - they do a great discount on multiple item purchases and once sent me a surprise refund because they noticed that the shipping was too high!

I also bought several (yes, several, I am addicted) bento boxes from honoka513. They shipped promptly and I really love the boxes.

J-LIST! That's the one I was thinking of.

Anyway -- I love the Japan store in Epcot! :D hehehe. I went long before I knew about bentos though... :P So I didn't pick anything up except for some Candy I think... it's been a while.

I bought ours (we all have at least one) from different places. Some I bought from different E-bay sellers. One that comes to mind is Tokyo_gift. I got lots of accessories from her too, including egg and rice ball molds, sauce bottles, sauce cups, and picks. I also bought one bento box from J-list, also a good seller. My Hello Kitty bento and my Usagi bento bag I actually bought during our trip to Disney in May. The Japanese store in Epcot had oodles of bento goodies, including a wall of chopsticks in matching cases.

So, if you're headed to visit Mickey, take the time to go to Epcot at least once in the trip. (The kids made me buy candies for their bento while I was in there too.)

I'm not actually using a 'formal' bento box. im using a craft storage box that's dishwasher/food safe. I bought mine at target for $6.99.

i'll look on ebay for a more formal one soon ^^

I thought maybe we could start a topic where we would post stores we've purchased bento goods from. I know I don't have any local shops so I purchase my items from eBay sellers, and would love some recommendations from everyone!
