I want another bento box that I can put in the microwave. And some cute little cut-outs... and maybe some of those condiment holders too. Oh! And silicone muffin cups to divide my food.

And... emoticon

I found a bunch of wonderful bento boxes on e-bay. I'm going to buy one for my boyfriend and one for me as soon as I lose another 6 lbs. After a while, I'll prolly get some egg molds and cutters. Until then I'm going to make do with a kitchen knife and plain eggs.

The only bento box I have...the lid fell down into the bottom of the dishwasher and melted emoticon

So I need a new one! A really cute one, complete with all the works like the nori punch-outs, egg molds, all that stuff! One thing is must be is dishwasher/microwave safe, cause burning plastic smells suck...

My biggest wants right now are more boxes (gotta go check out my local Dollar Tree and see if they have the Hello Kitty ones), egg molds, and hot dog/sausage cutters....I am all about the kawaii, even if I am not phenomenal at it yet.

On my wishlist is a thermal bento (like a Mr. or Ms. Bento). Also, some different veggie cutters. I just indulged a little on eBay (more egg molds, food cups, and sauce containers).

I emoticon cute sauce containers.

Thanks! I will have to pick up more things.

I also found www.bentotv.com. There are lot of things I can do with rice and bento in general.

I just picked up a rice shaper from the Noodle shop. Odd, but I'll try it tonight. I may post some pictures tomorrow.

YAY! I was going to say -- some short grain rice, nori, furikake (I like bonito flavored the best personally...)... and um. Little things. Like graps and baby carrots and little sweet bell pepper miniature thingies and little babybell cheese wheels etc. hahaha :D

We went mid to late March. I got to see the sakura in full bloom in Tokyo but not in Kyoto. We were about 1 week too early. But we still got an amazing experience. Once my BF finishes with college, we are thinking of teaching English in Japan. I think that would be such an awesome experience.

We also bought the plane tickets 5 months in advance. It made it really easy for us to have most of the expensive stuff paid for before we even got there.

Traveling is more affordable than people think. I did pick up a yukata for me. ^_^

Here is the website:

http://www.jbox.com/

I did a search for bento. This is the one I got:
http://www.jbox.com/IMAGE/h4q0r

As far as airfare to Japan, I did research for about 5 months. I checked different websites on a daily basis. I live in Minnesota, my flight was MSP-EWR(Newark)-Tokyo (Narita). It was about $600 (including all fees and taxes). Long trip and counterintuitive but it was cheap.

In Japan, we stayed at western style hotels and we made reservations using Orbitz or one of those sites. We found a hotel very close to the Shinjuku train station for about $70/per night. We paid for the hotel before we got there and it was worth it.

We purchased a 7-day train pass and it was the best prepurchase we made. It was about $240 and you can ride all trains in Tokyo and a few in Kyoto including the Shinkansen. This pass needs to be purchased before oyu get to Japan. We got it 2 months before the trip and it helped when paying for the trip. I'll stop ranting.

My overall experience in Japan is that it can be expensive, but you have to decide where to spend the money. I wish I would have splurged a little more.

And also, what airline did you get your ticket? Exactly, where did you take your plane and where did you get off?

My trip to Japan was about $1100 for a week, this includes airfare, hotel, food, and a few geeky souveniers ^_^

Also, I ordered a bento box yesterday, it comes with the bag, chopsticks, and 2 levels for food. It will be a few weeks before I get it, but I figured that in the meantime I will be practicing/testing out different recipes. I also got the octopus wiener shaper, hehe, and condiment bottles. Depending on how much I use it, I might get an anime one. emoticon

100MILLBUTRFLYS!! What a great suggestion! :) I've looked in container sections in food, but I never thought of looking for craft containers! I bet there are some that would work REALLY well -- and they tend to have dividers, too, unlike regular food containers.

ZHENJI - That's awesome. I took Japanese in High School and College a bit, so I learned quite alot although I haven't practiced in AGES. I definitely never got fluent or anything, but I know some basic phrases quite well so I think I'd be able to get me and the Nihongo-less husband around ok. :D He says he'd go with me, just gotta wait till we have time and money to do so.

Japan was a reward trip for me and I dragged the BF along. He wasn't excited at first, he wanted to go to Europe, but by the time we got to Kyoto he was loving it. Japan is such a wonderful country. I was able to do most things with 3 phrases. emoticon

Ok first search out turned up empty for bento boxes..but wasn't i suprised when i was at target and found a CRAFT box that would be a great bento box!! $6.99 buys a 2 tier craft organizer that is dishwasher safe! SO for those of you out there having a hard time finding a decent substitute, look at your local craft store or even target/walmart and check the craft storage boxes for tupperwareish type containers. Great for beginner practice! i'm so excited..i'm gonna make some rice up tonight! haha!

Luckily my hometown is a milatary town (Augusta, Ga) so we have asian markets like no other. But I grew up going to a place called "the oriental market' that half japanese and half german. the couple that run the store is just too nice. I really want a bunny shaped bento box, I keep begging my Aunt to send me one over. (My father's half japanese, my great aunt and cousins still lover over there in Kyoto). She doesn't understand why an American would want a bento. guess I gotta keep trying.

First let me start of by saying I'm SO JEALOUS that you have been to Japan. My sister went and I was even MORE jealous, because she's younger than me and everything. Yeah -- but anyway. As far as cute goes, mine are not cute right now. I'm with you as far as just trying to get the taste and portions right first. :D I'm so excited, too! I can't wait till I get to go shopping next and look for more bento friendly foods and ingredients for recipes!

I'm going to start a recipe thread!

I think I'm going to start by getting an anime related bento box.

I can't believe I didn't think about this while I was in Japan. I found that buying bento lunches at stations was the best way to ensure I wasn't going hungry while exploring a temple.

I'm also getting some recipes to start making them. I think it will be a while until they are cute and beautiful. For now I'll concentrate on taste and portions.

So excited!

Yeah, I'm in Alabama. So I FEEL YOUR PAIN. There is one or two Oriental Markets in town. One that is called the Oriental Market, which is why I used that phrase in the first place. hahaha! :D I hate the word "Oriental". But anyway -- there's another one but I haven't been to it yet because it's kind of in a reputably shady part of town. So I too am thankful for a)online resources and b)a sister that took a trip to Japan and bought me my adorable bento! :D

Ok well i'm not 100% certain that this would go here..but i just had to share the link..for those not quite as familar with bento.
http://www.airandangels.com/bentobox/ind

she does a wonderful job of explaining it for those of us not quite as familiar with bento and even offers links to shops.

I'm not sure what i'm gonna find in the "deep south" (read: North Carolina farm country haha) but it's good to know i can have a decent online source no?

OH! But also I was going to say -- yeah, I would really like one that suits those low calorie density foods like the fruit and stuff. If I bring a salad I pretty much can't use my bento cause it's kinda small and I wouldn't be able to get enough food in it to work.

Oh there are so many bento things I want!!! Sauce bottles, dividers, more bento boxes, egg molds, the list goes on and on. I have only one bento -- well technically I think it's two, but they are stackable with each other so I use it as one two tier bento. I NEEEEED to take some pictures to add to our flickr group, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. She got me an adorable matching bag to go with them, too!

What kind of bento-related things do you want?

Currently I have a small bento box, but I would like a bigger one. My small one is good for portion control, but if I want to make a bento with a lot of fruit it wouldn't fit.

I would also like a family-sized celebration bento box so I could make things to share. :)

I have an onigiri shaper that I like, but I also want some weiner shapers!

Here are some:

This bento box is really cute too:
