I'm lucky there's a stand of pine trees not far up the road, when they form and starting to dry out we go picking. I usually cut them in half and he ends up using the dug out cone to scoop up water with.

I might do one last "pinecone" run and see if there are anymore we can reach before they are finished for the year. We also have a few pine plantations around but not all pines have pinecones.

and the dog call, or Billy does the "Beebee is up to mischief" call.. not easy to speak parrot , will we ever learn it all? :)

I spent my resting tine wrapping "sweeties" in paper for them - can be food pellets, nuts, or whatever I can lay my hands on - a few of these are great when they get bored. Wish I can get my hands on some pinecones.

Yep there are all sorts of yells, my cocky has the "there's someone on the creek" yell, "there's an eagle up there" yell, "snake" yell and of course the "let me out" yell.

If he makes too much noise he either gets put outside or if it's late in the evening he gets either half a pinecone or something similar as it's usually through boredom that he's yelling

Believe me it's hard work getting those pinecones. It takes two of us one to pull the branches down and one, with gloves on, to twist them off. We are always competing with the wild cockatoos as well.

They are great as they occupy him for hours, they are good for his beak and the seeds are good for him.

I must admit I'm guilty in covering my birds up at night, starting to leave the back of the cages open. Also Billy is a lazy bird, I have to make an effort to get him to exercise more, thinking of hanging a ropes from the ceiling. Otherwise, I think we have it sorted, they seem healthy and happy, better be,. I spend my weekends preparing food for the birds & dogs!

Jules your Cocky is so blessed with the pinecones, Billy's no. 1 food too, just hard to get hold of it here.

Very interesting.

And like kids they always want to eat the most fattiest of foods. A bit like cockatoos and sunflowers, OK in small doses but just terrible if fed too much.

My Cocky, gets corn cobs, walnuts, almonds (only a couple) he loves a half a slice of multigrain bread occasionally. I go out hunting for pinecones that haven't opened and I split them with a tomahawk so he can get at the pine nuts. He spends hours playing, chewing and scooping water out with the pine cone. He only has about a tablespoon of seed, but he's inside of a night time so he doesn't need to build up body fat for heat.

When he goes outside he's allowed to dig into the ground for the grass roots and when I find milk thistle he always get some. Talk about spoilt
