I love the Paulownia, one of our trees is way over 40 feet high and it's only @10 years old. There are so many types of Pittosporum, some that are very green, some whose leaves are slightly larger than most and there are a couple that are variegated.

Even the trusty English box can look good with some pruning but not too much. You have to keep it with softer lines. Only problem is they can be slightly toxic to grazing animals.

I was looking at the Pittosporum on our Trees of the Year list! it was the 2002 tree here, so it's on my list. Love the Paulowina, very pretty and the wood is usable. So far I have our http://www.indigenousflora.co.za/index.php
?page_id=15&page=Spekboom+Trees and the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moringa_oleif
era .

Never thought it would be such a task...maybe I'm over analysing again but all things good those trees are going to be there for a looong time, sort of my lecacy emoticon if you get my drift

Excellent news about the Pear tree, it's amazing what a prune can do to a tree.

On quick growing trees, if you can get them, try a Paulownia. It's a chinese tree that is extremely quick growing and can grow to large sizes. I have a couple in my place and they have beautiful shade with leaves that can reach over 12 inches in diameter.

You could also try Pittosporum they aren't as quick growing but they're not bad and they can make a great hedge affect if you plant them close enough. You need to get tree saplings @ 3 feet high to get a good start on them.

If you are looking for fruit trees, I'm not sure what will grow quickly except figs.

Facing a bit of a dilemma, we cleared more trees - Port Jackson and 4 Syringa: Melia azedarach , both very invasive here and now I don't know what to plant! So stuck, I need about 15 trees - fast growing that will act as wind/noise break & give me privacy and look pretty plus clean air pollution(thinking ahead again) Any ideas from your side?

BTW I used that article on the pear tree pruning, worked out great. Going to do it over a 2 year period but the tree seems happier already emoticon

I've got a pile of stuff to do outside as well but it's too damned cold here to be outside for any length of time. I'll just have to wait until the weather warms up a little

I know, I have a problem getting rid of it as they won't take it in at the dump because it's asbestos - it will be fine if I slap another coat of paint on it to use as planters, I will take care when drilling drainage holes.

Don't feel like work, got the flu, very tight chest & headache - think I'm going to call it a day and ask the boss if I can go home.

Have a "lekker" weekend my friend xx

Mention the word "asbestos" here and they all drop down and have a heart attack!!

My house was built in the 70's so it's covered in asbestos cement, nothing to worry about unless you either eat it or smash it and disperse the dust. If you are using the gutters just be careful when you either cut them or scrape them, always use a mask, but after you've done that I couldn't see much of a problem.

emoticon new gutters are up & tanks installed, what a nice surprise when I got home, shame they worked in the rain all day. Looks neat! can't believe what a difference gutters makes to the look of the house, definitely updated to 21st centaury. Now to find a use for a heap of old asbestos gutters, I was thinking of vertical herb garden.

It sounds like a fight for survival of the cleverest on your side, those possums seems like a huge pest! We have loads of fruit eating birds here but that's it only other problem are moles that can be very destructive in vegetable garden, a problem easily solved by raised beds and my Jack Russell, lol!

You are way ahead of me with planting, hubby nags me every weekend for vines & passionfruit but I need to plan where & when first. Learned my lesson well planting hastily then regretting when in the wrong place - money & labour down the drain, not funny.

I've got an apple and an apricot tree to prune this Winter and the apple needs spraying for apple scab as well.

The loquat tree, if I get the fruit covered in time is partly ours, but mostly the cockies chew up all the fruit. They are definitely not getting my apricots and apples this year. Earlier this year most of our apples disappeared despite being covered. All I can think of is a possum got into the netting and ate them all, I was really pissed as we had the tree covered properly from the birds but never even expected the bloody possums!!

I pulled the grape vines as they had this thing on the leaves that left lumpy things all over the leaves. I use the leaves as well as the grapes, but again I have to watch out for the possums. I put in a passionfruit this year along with a raspberry and a redcurrant, hopefully they'll fruit this year.

That is a fantastic link! thank you xxx I have printed it out and going to try my hand, the last leaves are only dropping now, all the trees has been confused with warmer weather. My feeling was to prune while dormant but then somebody advised me to wait for nearer to summer. Loving this new challenge, I have become much more serious about all things gardening, this is what my retirement is going to be about so I might as well get it right.

BTW is your loquat for the birds or what do you do with the fruit? Do you have granadilla & grape vines?

We have an ancient pear tree out the front that was here when we came @40 years ago, at the moment the pears on it are dry and small and I've never bothered to prune it as everything here that bears fruit has to be covered because of the parrots. I have enough trouble now with the trees I have . I have an apple, 2 apricots, the pluot, a fig, a loquat and 4 citrus trees. The parrots even eat the tomatoes and the tree ferns, nothing is sacred from them.

If you are going to prune you have to do it in Winter when the tree is dormant, if it's a huge tree you'd probably need a tree surgeon or at least someone who knows what they are doing. I've added a link here to give you an idea of what to do.

If your tree has any other problems like apple scab etc you need to spray with the appropriate spray usually after the blossom has dropped.

Let me know if this link isn't the one you need and I'll try to find something else for you. Basically what you need to do is to keep the tree open and in a shape that doesn't cross or bunch up over itself.

The Pluot sounds interesting, keep me updated once you have fruit. I was tempted to put apricots in but decided not to, think there are enough soft fruit trees now for the fruit flies and birds. Will have to google your Paulowia tree when I start my research on how to doctor a very old pear tree....any ideas? I'm to scared to prune, so much old dead wood, would like to rescue it, it must be about 50 years old.

I know what you mean, if I got rid of the weeds in the "lawn" there'd be nothing left!!

I just planted a Pluot (cross between a plum and apricot) and a Paulownia tree the other day and I got a Tangelo tree yesterday but haven't planted it yet.

We have had lovely weather for the past 10 days, no wind or rain just chilly but it's going to hit us now, I think July is going to be very wet with snow on the mountains. Hope spring will not be delayed like last year, I can't wait to watch my new fruit trees grow!

Seriously looking forward to summer, my to do list is LONG! fist on the list are my raised beds for vegetables, I sort of given up on the tunnel idea as it's going to be to costly. Feeling frustrated that I'm not ready to start planting, trying to make up by ridding the yard of all weeds-you will be horrified to see the crap growing in open ground, can't believe how it's been neglected.

Yeah birds don't do strangers well do they. I know my cocky gives the "who in the f*** are you look" at anybody new in the house and the alarm alarm screach outside whenever there is someone out there that doesn't belong.

The weather here has been cold but not too wet yet. I don't mind the rain as it keeps the tanks and aquifers filled, but I'll be glad when this cold crap weather hits the dust too. I'm definitely not a Winter person.

Agapanthus are like weeds here, don't have any in my "new" garden. In the old place they just attracted snails galore, decided to stick to Geraniums this time. Had loads of Clivias but again snail farm, pulled them out and planted lavenders...getting lazy to garden in old age :) ??

The frosts were so bad here they knocked the stuffing out of the Agapanthus. Those things are like cockroaches you can't kill them, but they were really knocked around.

I bought a stack of Pittosporum treelets to replace what the last summer did and probably what this winter has done

Poor plants had doesn't know what to do, had warm spells between very cold & wet weather. I see my potted Duranta's new sprouts are dying off again, one side of the tree has got new leaves and the other side still dressed in winter mode. The bulbs that normally flowers by now is straggly, don't think I'm going to see any flowers this spring :( what a waste of money.

Exactly why I'm getting tired of the heat, it's too hot I've been trying to keep alive some of my small pittosporums I planted after the bushfires, I think I'll save them but the leaves have turned crispy so it gives you an idea as to how hot it is

Ouch Jules sorry about the ankle, it's going to take a long time if you tore a ligament. Busted mine 2002 I think and it took a good 2 years before I was back to normal! totally sucked! But you live in the land of Eucalyptus, I use the oil every night on me knees, it's great to heal inflammation and keep it in check-better than Arnica I found.

Ah, Zucchini! going to plant some this weekend when I pull the the tomatoes up emoticon thanks for the inspiration.

Pity about the poor performance in your garden - maybe just too darn HOT? This side has been hectic also with watering every morning, I had to move some of my planters out of the sun- some only get the very late pm sun. Also found if I drown the seedlings with my earthworm "tea" they can take more abuse from the elements later on. Thank God for Aussie worms emoticon they are super little composters emoticon so glad I invested in a worm farm years ago :)

I don't really want the cold, wet, crappy weather either, but I'd love a little relief from those really hot days, it's been going on for 2 months with barely a change, and I've just about worn myself out!!!

Oddly after getting the garden ready and doing everything properly, the garden has been slow with some of the veggies.

The tomatoes have been slow, although the cherry tomatoes have been going gangbusters. The Swiss Chard and Beetroot have also grown well along with the Potatoes. The corn is embarrassing though, and the pumpkins and the Spaghetti squash are just now starting to get their act together. I've got 3 Spaghetti squashes on the plants so far just hoping for more.

Will plant the Broad Beans, Zucchini and Parsnip seeds this weekend to get a start on the Autumn growing. The only herbs I could get to grow were Parsley, Mint and Chives, the rest didn't even show their heads above soil!!!!

I haven't been able to do that much outside as I twisted my ankle 2 months ago and it's still acting up. I thought I had broken it but the doc says it looks like I've buggered a couple of the ligaments. Just as well we don't have anything resembling lawn at the moment as I wouldn't be able to mow it. It's very frustrating to want to do something and not be able to get around to do it

Done with summer? noooo how can you say that :) just think of those miserable dark & cold days ahead, wet everywhere, nothing grows, mud everywhere, unhappy feathered & 4 footed kids. Give me the sun anytime, might be that I embraced sun this summer(very tanned) made sure I was sensible-hat & sunglasses and lots of swimming.

How does my garden grow? loads of tomatoes & herbs - making more pesto this weekend. I concentrated more on planting my extensive herb garden last year as I am so into treating ailments with my own. Even the dogs has their own herb patch now, amazing to see how they know instinctively what to eat. The Jack Russell allergies seems to be a thing of the past so I'm happy.

What's up in your garden Flowergal?

Hey Hannah. emoticon

Been terribly hot over here and day after day of it, to the point that I'm really done with Summer. I never thought I'd say that but I have really had it with the stinking hot weather.

I've never fed my dogs dry kibble, they might get the occasional small bowl as a treat but never as a feed. I'd hate to see mine livelier, I'd never get any peace.

How has your garden been going, have you got any vegetables up and growing?

So what's up???

How is life treating you guys? What's the weather like? Any exciting news? I'm bored emoticon

From my side - got my dogs on complete Raw food(3 weeks) and very pleased with the results, Ninja dropped her half kilo, both of them so much more livelier, less sleeping during the day and they seem more alert too. AND they are loving Mommy! must say they enjoy the food a whole lot more than the dry kibbles :)

Years ago I could drink with the best of them, in fact I could drink a few men under the table. But as I've got older, I'm like you and don't recuperate as quickly as I used to. When I stopped smoking I virtually stopped drinking as well. I like a wine sometimes, a couple of light beers, but other than that I'm a virtual teetotaler

Nice Jules, much better without the booze...you actually get to enjoy the effort that went into the food prep, I know same this side if it's only the two of us. Hubby is a teetotaler, so if I want to drink I'm on my own and that's no fun. It's his bro that's the big drinker and of course I'm always "forced" to join in, hehe can't waste a good bottle of vino and I do love my wine emoticon jokes aside, this age thing is the pits where alcohol is concerned, takes my at least 2 days to recuperate nowadays.

No "blow in" family over here, it's just the three of us so we all work together to try to have a good time.

The biggest difference to now instead of then is we rarely drink anything alcoholic. We might have a light beer later in the day, maybe a cocktail if I can be bothered mixing it, but usually we buy 3 or 4 bottles of sparkling grape juice and sometimes sparkling apple juice. It looks festive and tastes nice but we don't make a mess of ourselves anymore!!!

I normally carry everything out to the braai shack and keep the house off limit, only the bathroom is allowed to be used. That way the cleaning is down to next to nothing, wish there was an outside loo, shall put it on my wish list :-). The shack is wired for electricity, even got a little bar fridge in there, very nice to entertain our wild family & friends in.

As far as I know it'll be a barbie for us as well, some seafood, some lamb kebabs, salads and a tropical fruit pavlova.

As long as it's easy for me to make and cook and easy to clean up after it'll do me.

I am getting about 15 eggs a day most of the hens I have are older and no longer lay.
I am in Florida now visiting my parents. When I get home I hopefully will have more chicks hatching out in a week and will have 27 new chicks arrive in the mail..I have 20 4 week old chicks in the garage and 20 7 week old chicks in the yard so things should start looking up in about 5 months LOL

I've yet to see a chicken that can lay more than one egg a day, with that many chickens and with the mix of older and younger hens you'd probably get @30 or so per day.

I know after having any farm animal, I ended up a virtual expert in animal diseases etc. I think could have quoted passages from Black's Veterinary Dictionary.

I understand where you are coming from, I used to work for a boss who was a nervous breakdown on the hoof. He was a pain in the bum.

They are a lot of work for sure. I am hatching eggs at the moment to replace old birds and to replace the ones lost due to predators. I am down about 40 birds :(
My egg customers are really bummed. I am not getting nearly the amount of eggs I did before

When we first got our chickens (before we found out who wanted to buy them) we froze them. They are only good for cooking, but all you have to do is lightly beat them and freeze them in freezer bags.

I think once you've tasted a home layed egg you never want to go back to bought ones. There is no comparison, I know the vitamin and mineral etc breakdown is the same but the taste is completely different. I'd still have them now except I'd be the ones looking after them and I really don't have the time at the moment.

Not really on subject, but I remember years ago (when I was a little girl) chickens were not as common as they are today (at least here in Victoria).

My Dad had a chook pen out the back and we always had eggs, much to the disgust of our neighbours. When they used to lay proficiently we used to preserve the eggs in earthenware containers, using a preserving liquid and every so often we had the treat of a roast chicken, which was like gold back in those days.

I chart every month what I sell and what I buy and have a running total. I even know how many eggs my girls lay each month because I count daily. at the end of every month I tally it up. But the toatls are not enough I have to break it up into smaller categories

The more organized you are the less pain there will be,.I'm not to bad keeping stuff together but my downfall is that I wait until the last minute to do it(out of principal-never give the taxman any money before due date) so I get myself into this mad rush to make cut off time emoticon silliness

when all the animals have been hunted,
when all the waters are polluted,
