Oh, the way your body decides to store fat without consulting you can drive you nuts!

I'm happy I kept my boobs. (D bras are too small, DDs are too big, but considering I started as a DD 50 lbs ago, I'm doing pretty good.) However, the under-navel pooch and the fact that my thighs are STILLLLL rubbing together annoys me endlessly. I'm going to keep losing weight until my thighs stop rubbing together, then stop.

I miss my boobs and butt too.

The last place I lost the weight was in my stomach...and it's still the one area I like the least. That keeps me motivated as anything else to exercise, because realistically I can't lose much more weight overall. I also know that my mom and my grandma carried all their weight in their stomachs, so if I'm destined to carry my fat in one specific area, the stomach wins!

Well, Chipotle, whatever you are doing to get it bigger, let me know. I want to be sitting on 40s before the year is out :) I don't think squats and lunges are doing it for my butt, but my legs love them.

I know just how you feel Keiahnam, but I miss my boobs. I'd had fairly decent sized boobs since the eigth grade or so. Not huge, not big, but at least I never worried about them. Now they're just gone. Without a trace, leaves me feeling super bummed. BUT my boyfriend thank god is a butt man, and there's no way I could lose that, the more I exercise the bigger and thicker it gets.

If I were going to choose where to wear my fat, it would be my butt. I like having a big butt, but in order to get rid of side rolls, I had to sacrifice my butt. The LAST place extra weight came off for me was the stomach area. The first place was butt and boobs. And my boobs had just gotten to a nice size. I really miss my butt. Doesn't call, doesn't write. Just left me. Ran off with the twins I guess.

What a great discussion, especially for maintainers! I find that I'm always critical of something...when I first started SP, I was motivated by middle-aged belly pooch, then my focus became my upper thighs, and now it's my soft-&-flabby upper arms. No doubt if those ever meet my standards, I'll find something else!

Like others here, I try to channel that in a positive way (i.e., doing strength training, which I don't really enjoy). After all, my vanity prompted me to join SP and improve my lifestyle, so there is some good coming out of it!

Plus photoshopping those photos make them look leaner and take out those flabby areas. Body doubles in movies, etc. It's not reality, it's fantasy. Real people have fat, it's healthy, after all. I think the hardest part is accepting that, and learning to love our bodies for what they can do, and not necesarily what they look like naked!

I haven't been able to lose all my excess fat pockets but it has improved tenfold since I started maintaining but continued to workout. I don't think I am putting forth enough effort to make it disappear, but I can see the difference. Last month I saw my sister (one year younger than me) and she has worked really hard on the toning aspect after gettting to her goal and she looks amazing, so I know it can be done if you work at it and I hope to bump up my activity to further improve results.

Unless they are naturally lean, most of the stars probably have tummy tucks and liposuction. That's the only way to totally lose the fat....

I too struggle with flabby abs (especially LOWER abs...ugh) My original goal weight was 125, but at 125 I was still unhappy with my stomache. I too had read the article saying that in order to get rid of belly fat you have to continue doing cardio to burn fat. So I doubled up on my cardio and lost another 9 pounds and dropped to 116. At 116 I still had the belly fat but had lost weight in my back to the point where you could see bones and I appeared very unhealthy. I've gained 3 pounds back since then and have been maintaining at about 118/119 which is good for me. My advice would be not to try and loose weight all over if you are already at your goal just to shrink your tummy. Just keep training and doing crunches/Pilates/ etc. to work your core. Since I started Pilates I have noticed a bit more definition in my abs but it appears very slowly. Unfortunatly I think that women just carry fat around their middles...I would pay money to find out how people like Brooke Burke and Heidi Klum flatten their tummies though.

My fat tends to hang out in my saddlebagx, large thighs and legs. definitely a pear here, not a apple, although some days I have a pretty flat stomach, it pooches out some, especially at TOM. I do agree w/ the advice on strenght training, I am much more toned than I used to be, and see a lot of muscle definintion where I used to just see fat. My problemt areas just look much better after the toning, and that was w/ maintaining the weight, not losing any more.

MDBTOWN, go to your Start Page and redo your goals to see what your calorie range would/will be for maintenance. Make your starting weight and your goal weight the same. Then estimate how many calories you will be burning per week. Spark will then tell you what your calorie range should be. emoticon

I was wondering though how you are all maintaining? What is your calorie range right now?

2BFIT..I agree wholeheartedly with OUTOFCONTROL. Conginue your cardio and strength programs, get the extra fuel..you will probably feel and look better. I went on maintenance at 120, dropped as low as 114 and am happy where I am..I try to do the right things and let my body decide where it needs to be. Good luck!

It is scary. I have learned to live with being 2 pounds over my goal weight most of the time. I just can't see going back into weight loss mode just to hit a certain number, when all my clothes fit fine and I'm doing a great job of eating right and maintaining this weight. The main reason I keep from doing that is that I work out very hard training for my marathon, and I know my body needs the energy.

OUTOFCONTROL, that is part of my thought process too. I've been working on adding more muscle. I sort of think I should go into maintenance which would raise my calories and fuel my workouts better. It's just so scary to think the scale will go up even one pound when you've worked so hard to lose it.

I think at a certain point it's better to start adding some muscle, which will raise your metabolism and burn a little more fat over the long term. Once you reach your goal weight, body composition is more important than weight. I am dramatically smaller than I used to be, and I have lost the fat mostly from my upper body. My lower body still has the same general shape it used to.

When I hit 160, I decided to go into maintenence for a month, then decide whether to try for another five to see if it would make a difference. My month is almost over. I'm pretty sure I'll go for another five at this point, but I'm annoyed at myself for considering it.

I am really struggling with this issue too! I met my goal weight Friday of 115 lbs. Happy with everything except the tummy pooch. So every day (all day long it seems), I'm pondering if I need to lose a few more or just go into maintenance. emoticon As you can see I did lower my goal but I still don't know if that is the correct choice or not. Like others have said, I believe genetics determine where your fat is stored. Still.... do we go into maintenance or try to lose a few more? emoticon

I think that a lot of it is just plain heredity. And your body does decide where to put the fat (if it didn't we would all be "well endowed").

I do find that the less processed foods that I eat, the less belly fat I have. If I start eating junk, I can almost see my tummy growing. But it was also the first place where I lost weight so maybe that is my heredity.

I do think that strength training, especially core, can help a little but only in the sense of toning and burning calories.

I'm having a hard time with "body image". I still see fat lumps all around my middle and thighs. I catch myself hunting for pictures of women my height and weight to see how "thin" or how they carry their weight. I have to remember that my thighs and middle are covered up by clothes, and the only person to see them is me!

Yes, exactly. If we have no choice as to where our body stores the fat we *need*, then why do so many fitness magazines/web sites devote so much space to talking about flat abs? Isn't that unhealthy? Are women supposed to have invisible fat? Where are we supposed to put that 20-25% if not on our bellies? The annoying thing is that I've clearly bought into the whole flat abs pathology, because even though I know I need body fat, I want it gone.

I think women are destined to have fat in certain areas. Diet and exercise can help but I think heredity has a large role to play in where we store it. emoticon

I actually asked my doctor for suggestions about reducing the belly fat. He looked at me like I had 2 heads. I explained to him that with my hip/waist ratio I was still an apple. He said it is genetic, and like John said, we don't have much choice about the genetics of where we store the fat. He didn't have any good answer for how to get rid of it either. I was also planning to try to convert the fat to muscle so I could maintain the weight.

As I understand it, we don't have much choice in the matter. Per SP, our body stores the fat where it chooses. If I were you, I would talk to my doctor about loosing the extra 5 pounds. I plan on converting some of my flabby belly to muscle and maintaining my weight.

Grace and Peace,
John

I hit my target weight several weeks back, but continue to be annoyed by the fact that I still have belly fat. I was thinking about trying to shave off another five pounds to see if I can shrink my belly a bit more, and then I started to wonder if it was healthy to do so. Healthy women are supposed to have 20-25% of their body mass be fat. But where am I supposed to be carrying that healthy fat? My belly seems like the perfect place from a logical standpoint. Where else do I have the room for that percentage of my weight to accumulate in fat?

This is a conundrum.
