It is also said that you should do ST first to be sure you are not tired and doing the moves to fast or incorrectly and chancing an injury. I do an hour usually breaking it into 3 days to get all body parts and if I am short on my our I do cardio to round it out.

Thanks for the suggestion, I think I'll try that, I always tell myself I'll do it after my cardio, and I never feel like doing it. Maybe getting it over with before hand will make me get it done.

That DVD sounds great! I have another suggestion for the gym which is to get the ST in before the cardio, especially if you have a hard time getting it in after and don't have a problem getting in the cardio. I think if you made a commmitment to do 10-15 min of ST before the cardio, the cardio would seem like the "reward" for getting in the ST. I know I sometimes prefer the cardio to ST, but they are both important parts of my fitness regimen.

Hi there outofcontrol. Which month is taht from? I would like to do more combo workouts. I currently do arms/shoulders M, legs W, chest/back F. It works fine, but sometimes it is hard to work in time wise. I know combos would cutthe time a bit, but give me good workout.

For any of you who are runners, I have been doing the Build a Better Body strength workout from Runner's World. They are two different routines of compound exercises, with some of them done as a circuit.

That sounds perfect! I will have to check it out. I need a shake up in my routine. I did try a new trick yesterday taht I saw in one of my magazines. I did a lighter weight, but also used the resistance band with it. My arms are gonna fall off I think, lol.

Yeah, its great because unlike some other DVD's I looked at it only requires to sets of weights/dumbbells one light set and one heavy set, no balls, no bands, she does suggest you workout on a carpeted area or have a mat since some exercises require you to be on the floor. So not a lot of equipment required!

Hey, that DVD sounds pretty cool. Is it with free weights? What equipment do you need? Maybe I can just lift my kids instead of the weights! (I can start with 3-yr-old and work up to the 6-yr-old. LOL)

Thanks.

Minna Lessig: 1 Minute Workout. Its really great because you can actually customize your exercise experience, you choose the level of intensity, the area(s) you want to work on and how long you want to work out each time. You make your selections and the DVD will randomly put a program together for you. And there are over 100 different exercises on the DVD, so according to them, you could even choose the same specifications each time and hardly ever do the same workout. I did low level, whole body, 16 min. last night (plus warm up and cool down), and I was sweating! I definitly think I'm going to keep trying it out. Since I've only tried it once, I can't give it my complete seal of approval, but I definitly think the concept of the DVD is quite innovative and worth a try!

I actually do have a trainer I meet with once a week :p I've just had a hard time finding the motivation to do it on my own 1-2 other times during the week. But I did my video tonight and I really liked it. So this might be a good way for me to get it in.

Thanks for the advice :)

I am glad that you are feeling better on maintenance. It is a tough transition. I somehow got myself to do st 3x per week and love it now that it is routine. I break it into sizable chunks and feel horrible if I miss it now. It is just a matter of finding what works for you. i have calbe with on demand and do some of the 10 minute workouts too.

And congrats to Dora too!

Hi there. Congrats on meeting your goal! I have struggled with my weight for years and set a goal of 130 lbs. which I recently met. I invisioned in my mind stepping on the scale at the gym and crying and hugging everyone (like my personal trainer who weighs me) when I saw 130 on the scale. Needless to say, it wasn't quite like that. I think it's also because it's just become a way of life and I felt great when I was 140 lbs. I have actually changed my goal to 120 lbs. - why not?? I really just now want to get my body percentage down and tone up. If you are struggling with the idea of how to add strength training to your workout you might want to consider working with a personal trainer. I meet with one once a week for a half hour and she teaches me core training and strength training, mostly things I can also do at home. I have noticed great improvement in my body shape since working with her. Something to consider- good luck and congrats again!

I started 2007 at 165 lbs. Ticker represents current goals!

Happy to hear you're doing so well IRISH-ANGEL, and appreciating your accomplishment more. I understand the feeling of maintaining for a few weeks. I've done the same, and I'm rather "surprised" (I don't think that's the right word, but "pleased" doesn't quite catch it either).

Anyway, happy to be at goal and staying here this time.

Good for you for trying different activities that'll work for you. I think that is one of the keys to this thing, eh?!

Cheers!

So its been a couple weeks since I first posted this, and while I haven't found any more motivation to strength train, I have maintained my weight loss, in the face of several set backs no less! For some reason I just can't bring myself to add the extra 15-30 min. at the gym after my cardio to use those strength training machines :p But I did order some workout DVD's that focus on toning, and I'm trying my first one tonight. I figure if one way isn't working for me, I should try to fit it in another way! (only took me how long to think of that...??) We'll see how it goes.

Oh and by the way, I am much more excited about where I am now, probably boosted by the fact that I've been able to maintain my weight, I'm excited that I REALLY did it, and can keep it up. Maybe that's why I wasn't excited at first...I doubted that it would really last. Well, so far so good! Thanks again for everyone's support :)

Just go slow and get used to it first. I would definitely find a new outlet or goal though. It will keep your mind occupied.

My new one is to break a 7 minute mile in a 5k. Soooooo close last night at 7:03. Longer term is to do my 2nd 1/2 marathon in Detroit 10/21 at a better time than my first in Traverse City on 5/26. i did very well with at time of 1:48 for 13.1 miles, but am aiming for 1:30-1:35. It will be very hard and will depend on weather for the most part.

I felt underwhelmed too.

I miss the trill of losing. Plus the goal of maintaining is so scary. But so far....so good.

I'm thinking that in the fall I may try to lose a few more, we'll see.

I felt the same thing - journey to get "there" was definitely more exciting. I see posts where people say "when I reach my goal weight, I'll scream and jump out of joy", but it wasn't like that for me at all... I didn't feel the need "to tell the whole world", or go give myself a treat/buy something (this is 'cause I do it all the time lol).
I also weigh myself everyday, and every time I saw THAT digit for the first time, I was super excited and happy the whole day. So reaching the final goal was just a similar experience, nothing more.

I think this reaction is very common, if I remember previous posts like this one. I don't know why, but it is a let down somewhat, you met your goal and expect to be really excited, but I think a previous response nailed it w/ the "now what?" remark. Celebrate your succes! You deserve a big emoticon so enjoy it! Then make a new goal, maybe you will get excited for that. Since you want to tone, then that would be a good way to go. After I met my goal weight I set a goal to do a pull-up, and let me tell you how excited I was to accomplish that one!

Others have signed up for 5K's to marathons, so whatever your goal is now, go for it and enjoy the victory!

I didn't feel very excited either. I think it's because after all this hard work, I came to realize that it's just a number on the scale. It doesn't feel the same as other goals that require more effort and feel more satisfying, like running feels to me. Other types of results have become more important to me, like being able to eat the right foods and keep up with my exercise routine.

I think, like everyone else, it is a bit of shock and it takes time to settle in. For me it was also a let down. Like I was so focused on losing as a goal I went into an "now what" mode. Just take a moment to really give yourself the credit you deserve and set a new goal for yourself. Such as mainitaing for 30 days, a new activity now that you are more svelt. Something to distract mostly was what I needed.

Irish - it may be shock but perhaps it's just a matter of fact that now that you are leading a healthy lifestyle, you are used to having goals and working toward them - well, you reached one. It's just not all that exciting because you feel so good ALL THE TIME. I know you said you would like to get more toned and that could certainly be a new goal!! Press on toward the next thing you want to achieve. I know that I didn't feel all that excited - just kind of like, Well, I did it, what's next?

Just some thoughts!!

Actually I think its the opposite. I weigh myself every morning, so I've seen my weight go down steadily, I was 116 yesterday and I did my workout and ate like I was supposed to, so I had a feeling I'd be 115.something today. I guess I was kind of expecting it. It doesn't really feel like a big deal...but I want it to be :P I want to be excited! Maybe it'll just take a few days to sink in that I actually made it...

So I did it, I got on the scale this morning and it read 115.8, I said I'd be so happy once I just saw that 1, 1, and 5, and I did. So why am I not jumping off the walls? I got more excited THINKING about reaching my goal than I was when I actually met it. I guess in the back of my head I'm thinking , it wasn't the even 115, and that I'm still not as toned as I'd like, and I'm considering losing another pound or two to give me wiggle room when I'm maintaining. I am proud of myself and how far I've come...I'm just wondering if its normal to feel its a bit anticlimactic when you actually reach your goal...?
