"For me, I think the 2000 calorie mark would be wild because that's what's on the packages for "serving sized based on a 2000 calorie diet" - wow."

There are perks to being roughly* the size of the average adult male. Calories, medicine dosages, seatbelts - they're all sized to fit me perfectly. Then I try to buy pants and it all falls apart.

(* I'm actually an inch taller last time I checked.)

There's something about "Aerobis in front of the Colbert Report" that has me giggling.

For me, I think the 2000 calorie mark would be wild because that's what's on the packages for "serving sized based on a 2000 calorie diet" - wow. You can look at food packaging and go "yup, okay, that's my calorie range!"

It's so funny to read that other people are on the "5 pounds by the end of the year" plan, because I'm going to start in on that come September 1 as well.

It's weird--when I went on maintenance, I also freaked when I ate within my new range, because suddenly, 2000 calories wasn't a bad day, it was a bare minimum. I've since reduced my weekly cardio expectations, so the numbers are a bit lower, but 2000 is still smack in the middle of my normal range. I can't figure out why 2000 is so freaky. 1950 certainly isn't.

And I am still working out regularly, but I'm doing more yoga and bellydance than hard-core cardio. They burn less calories, but they're far more enjoyable, and both make me feel far happier in my body than any other type of exercise. My brain and body feel wonderfully connected during yoga and bellydance. Aerobics in front of The Colbert Report just don't give me the same feeling.

I have now had a couple of weekends in the last month that I have not tracked and I am doing pretty good. I am feeling more confident every day. I like to track though and do it every day where possible. The 2 I didn't track we were gone for too long to keep track on one and the other was just such a train wreck that I didn't know where to start.

I find now after 8 months on maint that I am staying at the lower end of my cals (I get 1600-1950)through the week. Even with my Edy's almost every night. Friday is always date night so its over. I think I am falling into better habits. Finally, lol.

As others have said, baby steps worked for me, inching up the calories and tracking faithfully. I too lost more weight after increasing until I found my equilibrium. And I need to track daily to be sure to stay above the minimum. I have significant limitations on my ability to exercise, so I need to make any adjustments on the calorie side of the equation.

Nothing happens next. . . . This is it.

entering maintenance was scary for me because it really challenged me to prove that I'd completed a "lifestyle change", not a temporary diet. I worried about exercise, calories, fiber, iron, calcium...you name it, I obsessed about it! It took awhile, but I finally gained some confidence by "sneaking up" on my new cal-range and not gaining (in fact, still losing!). You'll get there!

It must be nice. I am still struggling to figure out how to maintain a weight. I gained 2 pounds and am working to lose them again. I know I'll figure it out eventually, it's just a bit frustrating in the meantime.

I am a losing machine too on maintenance. My body is just "working" right now. I ate pretty bad for 4 days and didn't bother to track it and I am right where I started. I did do extra cardio last week knowing we would be eating bad while we were gone. I like knowing my body this well. It is kind of strange, but nice.

OUTOFCONTROL hit it on the head....now that my body is healthy (20% body fat), it's amazing what I can eat and not gain. My current calorie range is 1700-2050, and that's not even maintenance (I'm still set for a 5-pound loss by December)! That only includes 1500 calories burned per week through cardio, and I'm starting to train for a half-marathon so I'll be burning more than that, I'm sure...so I eat a little extra if I'm hungry after running.

Wow, reading all these posts, I'm saying to myself "yep, that was me". When I started maintenance I was totally freaked out about the extra calories - I was sure I would gain.

Of course, I did not gain. In fact I lost another couple pounds. I have eased up on my cardio since maintaining (since this past February) and still have not gained. I eat anywhere from 1600 to 1900 now. I do work out at least 6 days a week, sometimes 7, but no where near as hard as when I was losing. And I do still track my food, I'm looking forward to a time when I don't have to. But for now it keeps me honest and on track.

Good luck with maintaining.

Mine went from 1200-1550 up to 1700-2050. That was too much! So I actually REDUCED my cardio a little, and it brought it down to 1680-2030. Ok, so it was only 20 calories, but it made me feel better. Like saying something is $19.99 instead of $20. LOL!

Still, if I don't track my food regularly, I have a hard time eating ENOUGH, so I continue to track daily, and will until at least the end of the year. Despite this, I have STILL lost 5 lbs more than I intended (original goal was 155). Just yesterday I edited my goals again to maintain at 150, and it brought me down another 30 calories, which hopefully will make it just that much easier to meet my daily minimum for maintenance.

So, in other words, no, you won't "gain it all back" if you increase 300-400 calories per day. If you've truly developed new, healthy habits, you'll have the same problems I am having! LOL!

DON'T panic. Just add a few in everyday with small luxuries and get into it a bit at at time. It can be very daunting, but when you do find a comfortable range the extra goodies can be nice. My favorite is a bit more salad dressing and an extra T of bacon bits.

OH MY GOODNESS!!! My calorie range went from 1200-1550 to 1510-1860! What the heck?! I had been staying around 1200 and now all of a sudden I'm supposed to eat at least 310 more?! What are others' ranges and do you stay within it?

This is all great information and very encouraging. I've been maintaining for about 4 weeks and I have been able to keep it between 125-127 fairly easily. Every week gets easier.

I have at least one day, friday, that is 300-400 over and usually another somewhere in there. I don't panic any more knowing I am working out. You will get used to it. Really, you will.

I agree with everyone else..it is scary to up your intake but I did it and lost a few more pounds after I went on maintenance. I do keep up the cardio and strength so I know that hleps. I find that I can have one or two "over range" days every week.

It is scary at first...but you'll just need to experiment a bit and see what works for you. I find I've now learned to compensate with my vigorous workouts when I go a bit high on calories.....and I think it would be hard to get back in to a stringent loss mode now that I've been maintaining so long...practice making healthy choices and staying mindful and keep your eye on your weight...some fluctuation is normal, so decide what range you are comfortable with....keep tracking so you can see what you are doing and how it is working....post when you can and let us know how you are doing!!

I did the same thing with my goal weight to give myself some time to settle in. It was a very overwhleming feeling at first and I was totally paranoid. That was in January. All is good now. I have good weeks and terrible weekends and still do all right. In my head and on the scale. If I relly flub up I just throw in a bit more cardio to even it out. I usually do about 1000-1500 more calories than I have myself set to anyhow so if I go over 1 day by 100-300 calories I don't get to bad over it. i still track though. I am no where near ready to give that up. I did not post last friday and saturday because it was just a nightmare getting ready and recovering from my 1/2 marathon. I just started back on sunday like any old day. To sum it up maintenance is totally doable once you get used to it and figure out your range

Congrats on reaching goal! In the beginning, I wasn't sure how many calories to eat for maintenance either. I reset my goal to lose 5 pounds in 6 months and gave that a try. It gave me time to figure it out with a kind of security net. I've seen posts where others have done that as well. It was kind of nice because it also gave me some time to figure out where a good maintenance range was for me. I'm sure you will do very well, especially with stepping up your exercise routine.
Congrats again!

I got my calorie range for maintennance: 1320-1780. I still afraid I'll gain. I ate mostly around 1200 to lose weight.

Once school is out I plan to try to step up my exercise routine even more. (One week left of school - I teach 2nd grade)
