@Oolala - that is just what I needed to know!. For one day, I will set an alarm and eat every 4-5 hours. Taking notes on the rest of your plan. I agree, it is the chewing in the afternoon that makes me want to chew more :). Thanks for taking the time to reply!

I made a commitment to myself to not snack between meals on solid food at all on weekdays over four years ago. It has been crucial to my appetite changes. One of the "secrets" was just seeing that years of eating meals and good snacks did not keep me from bingeing at other times. In fact, I found that if I could get through three hours without eating after a meal, I was usually fine for another couple of hours. Eating every three hours was making it harder, not easier, to eat less. I also eat sweets only on weekends. They are rarely a truly satisfying food for me, and it is very important to eat satisfying foods.

Another thing that helps me is being sure that I have something I'm looking forward to as part of me meal for dinner. It might be a biscuit with butter or these days, more likely fruit with almond butter, but something I consider scrumptious. (Actually, I consider just about all of my meals scrumptious now.) And having eaten a good, satisfying lunch. I can remind myself I'm not starving, that I have eaten enough food, and will again in a few hours. My desires are tolerable because they do not mean a real need for food. They are often just a desire for a pleasant experience, usually because I don't like what I'm doing at the moment. (I have a lot of these moments!) I just keep telling myself that the best tactic is to wait it out. Urges reach a peak and then subside. We just usually give in before it reaches its peak. That makes the cycle even stronger! Waiting out the peak weakens the cycle over time. Knowing this helps me, too.

Finally, if things get really tough, I have a mocha or latte with stevia or Splenda. I don't find that these make me want to eat more later, as most snacks, even healthy snacks, do for me. Chewing seems to be the stimulus, not the food itself. A hundred calories for one of these is well worth avoiding a worse transgression later.

My worst problems lately are just that I am going through a phase of really not liking my job and being unhappy with my social life. These are issues I've tried hard to remedy over the years with varying success. Sometimes it's harder to face my failures than others. Thankfully, these days I can be disappointed without eating over it most of the time. It's a learned behavior.

@Oolala - what are the secrets to not snacking in the afternoon? This is my current challenge. My exercise and choice of foods are under control, but would like to find what works for me between 1:00-5:00, to not consume more than a few hundred CALs or less. I work FT, so very busy and sometimes stressed. Happy M Day to all you moms!

Celebrated El Dia de Las Madres with my mom and sister today.
The day makes me sad, not knowing how long I'll have my mom for.
The day makes my mom sad, because she doesn't have her mom anymore.

My married daughter, son-in-law, and son took me out for Mother's Day today. We went to the city, and swam and played together at the university pool for an hour or so, and then rode the trolley back to my son's neighborhood. From there we walked several blocks to Dick's Kitchen, where I had a delicious Thai Chicken Salad, a chocolate coconut bliss milkshake, and a chocolate chip cookie a la mode. It was a lovely treat, and so fun to be with my kids. Helped a lot to make up for the night of worry and no sleep last night. (I was expecting my son to come home to sleep, and he never came, and didn't think to call me and tell me his change of plans. I couldn't sleep a wink, wondering if he was okay.) Tomorrow I will celebrate MY mother, making her a special lunch.
Now, it's off to bed EARLY to make up for last night!!

Went to a Mother's day buffet with my family. Ate a bit too much but calories came out even since It was both breakfast and lunch."

We walked around the conservatory and gardens.

It was a really nice family day.

My tummy is batter. I was able to enjoy some of the food at the buffet. I had to stay away from the extra rich stuff.

when i think of mother's day (it is mother's day today in mexico, where i am), i think of all the women who have nurtured me so lovingly, generously, graciously, and know that whatever good there may still be in me, i owe it to them. some have passed (like my own mom, in 1996), some are older, some are younger, some are family of blood, others family of spirit, some are active parts of my daily life, and others pop in and out. some of been a part of my life for a long time, others are fairly new. these people have touched me deeply and changed my life in ways i cannot adequately articulate. some of them are YOU, known to me only in the virtual world, but whose impact is very real. thank you. thank you, all. may you all feel honored, appreciated, acknowledged, and loved. thank you for being such powerful role models, even though you may not have set out with the intention of epitomizing what it means to walk in beauty. happy mother's day to all those who have mothered, sistered, befriended, and otherwise supported me and others and encouraged us to flourish.

went to torah study this morning. My turn to bring breakfast for the group. Bagels, cream cheese, lox with capers and sweet onions. Got on the scale this morning and shocking results, obviously because I stopped tracking religiously I gained weight. 5 pounds above my healthy weight. Back to tracking this morning. MUST take it off before it becomes 10 pounds

Morning team. Closing at work till 9 tonight, then up at 5AM to be at church for lighting from 7-1 tomorrow. Think I'm prepared nutritionally with plenty of healthy foods as long as I avoid the emotional eating and sugar.

Morning team. Stressful week for me. Going in to the office for a little work this morning. Before that I think I'll try to go to the gym. I've never been really big into the gym, but I'm really liking it! We are doing a shrimp boil at my house for mother's day today. It will be nice.

Everyone have a great day!

Sitting on the sofa watching Thomas the Tank Engine with my daughter. Both boys (hubs and son) are still asleep. Today is my son's last swimming lesson and then we will get our Saturdays back to normal.
I am hoping to go for a short run this morning with the tot in the stroller. I need to spend the next 6 months running on gravel instead of road surfaces for my next race. The only nearby gravel path I know of is a 1.25 mile loop around a lake. Which is lovely, but getting up my mileage on a loop path is kind of boring. I'm going to have to find some other paths to run on.
At 2:30 my hubby and I have our life insurance physicals. I am working hard on doing hard things-- and getting our ducks in a row for the unthinkable is very hard. But, we need to make sure there is enough for our kids to be taken care of if it does. And that is very hard.

Imperfection is important. If we were all perfect, then there would be no such thing as growth, and everyone would be extremely boring, which is, paradoxically, not that perfect.-- Dr. Matt

Spent most of yesterday at a 90th birthday party for a friend. She is the longest serving library volunteer, a very distant cousin of my husband, and just the all round cutest woman I know. My BFF and I were the youngest people invited, not counting her daughters, who are between BFF and me. The location was a resort about an hour's drive away, at the mouth of the Rappahannock River. Food was so good the dainty portions still filled us to capacity. This was food you tasted slowly, in delicate bites that you savored as long as you could. And there was cake! LOL. There were individual tributes to which the guest of honor had loving responses, always to the contributor's praise and I realized that TheBirthdayGirl always did that. Always found a compliment to give everyone she met - and perhaps that is why her 90 years sit so lightly on her shoulders.

The invitation said " Come celebrate our mother's FIRST 90 years". May we all live to see 90 such years.

Hi all! I did not get much activity in yesterday. Very busy day at work followed by rushing to get to my niece's confirmation then out for pie with the family. I did indulge in apple pie ala mode but I figured it was better than the French silk pie I wanted. The rest of the day I did well with my portions!

I am hoping to get a run in today and see my nephew's baseball game. As long as the pager stays quiet. It's going to be a beautiful spring day here so I want to be outside as much as possible.

I hope it's a positive day for everyone. Let's go forth and Spark!
