I agree that a healthy lifestyle consists of being aware: (1)of eating the right amount of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat and lots of water.; (2) of getting consistently enough exercise to use the calories you eat (3) of being involved in helping other people in some way
and (4) enjoying the gifts from God that come with each new day. emoticon

Nell: I still find that sweating can make me slow down a workout. I think I need a towel or something to wipe off with near my treadmill.

To me a healthy lifestyle is choosing to eat healthy most of the time, lots of veggies, fruits, grains, less sugary sweets and empty calories. Allowing myself the occasional treat without guilt. Drinking lots of water every day. Exercising as much as I can, adapting those exercises to my pain level on any given day. Focusing on what I can do instead of what I can't do. Being kind to myself. Doing something just for me every day, like working on crafts or reading a book. Taking an entire day to do nothing if that's what I need that day, and not feeling guilty about it.

Don, when I was young I was told that women didn't "sweat", we "perspired". Grandma told me that when she was young (she grew up on a farm with no running water or electricity so you know she was sweaty) women were said to "glow". Even when I was in high school it was uncouth for girls to do anything where they might be seen to sweat. My how times have changed!

Living a life filled with heart and Spark!

Love this quote and aspire to it: "This is not the time to be passive. This is the time to shape, sculpt, paint, create... the time to get sweaty, to get dirty, to fall in love, to forgive, to forget, to hug, to kiss; this is the time to experience, to participate and to live your life as a verb."

It's hard to say in a few words. There are many elements that make up the whole: physical (exercise, nutrition, sleep), emotional, cognitive, spiritual. Balance of all those elements is important. I like the idea of my work being playful and working at my play. Having many companion animals (horse, dogs, rabbits, ducks) helps me stay balanced and centered, so does meditation. Only when in balance can I truly eat and exercise in a healthy manner.

You can talk to God all you want and that's great, but the changes happen when you start listening to him.

Nell, DH and I both have somewhat serious medical conditions that are currently controlled by medications. One more reason we're travelling now, before we get too much older.

But my ST is focused on maintaining my current level of strength, focusing on my core, legs/thighs, and my arms/shoulders. Plus balance. Balance becomes more and more important as we age, so I try to keep that up, too.

So yes, there are the unexpecteds - but all we can do is be as healthy as we can now and then try to maintain that health and fitness. And now that I'm 59 (DH is 65) we know how important it is to stay healthy and fit. Even if I'm never a size 8, or even a 10, I'm a healthy and active size 16. Which is a whole lot better than when I was a not-so-healthy and very inactive size 20-22.

Nobody really plans for disability in aging, not just ours, but our spouse's. My life is constrained now because my husband has had strokes, even though I'm fine. I want to be healthy enough to care for him whatever may happen. But I know people who sink into Alzheimer's, or cancer or osteoporosis, and there isn't anything to do about it. We all picture being that 90 year old still running around, but it usually doesn't happen that way, alas. All we can do it the best we can.

Hmmm, trying to eat fairly healthy with lots of fruits and veggies, etc. Getting regular exercise to keep my body in good physical shape. So it can do what I want it to do, when I want to do it. For me being healthy is about keeping my body in good shape to do what I want. I watch others who are older and see how limiting their bodies are. I am hoping to keep my body in good shape as long as I can, so it can do what I want it to do. I know someday, my body will give out on me, unless I die young and I don't like that option. My grandmother used to say Don't get old. My response was that I didn't like the alternative. I still don't. I want to be one of those who lives to 90 and is still very active and then body fails and I die within a few weeks. Just enough time to give others the chance to say goodbye.

My healthy lifestyle includes nourishing my body with healthy foods, drinking 8 glasses of water and exercising daily, in one way or another. With my new level of fitness, running 3 to 4 times a week is also included in a healthy lifestyle for me. emoticon

Eating nutritious foods (within my range), drinking my water, and getting my exercise - both strength training and cardio. My healthy lifestyle also includes eliminating as much stress as possible - so I've learned to say no, I work on incorporating ME time in each day, and I surround myself with the positive. I've weeded out the toxic people as much as I can.

And I'm so much happier!
