For me, maintaining is attempting to stay around 140. Most of the time I'm a bit above that...not often below it, but willing to get there! Any pounds over 140 is reason to eat on-plan and exercise on-plan. I'm "salt sensitive" so eating a salty meal can put me up 6 or more pounds!

Anyway, that's what maintenance is to me...that and not seeing the BMI calculator saying "overweight" nor "obese" EVER again!!!

Cheers,
Sandi

My original goal was 57 kilos at home, to go p to no more than 60 when on holiday. For the last month or so I have been around 55, and I am comfortable with that. I now hope to keep around 55 at home, to go up to no more than 57 on holiday. I jump on the scales every morning to keep tabs on any upward tendency, but record it only once a week. That way a weigh in is never stressful as I know it wont move far in a day. Intuitive eating works for me.

Maintenance is about living without the misery and fear of being victim to my own impulses over food. It's not about whether someone else thinks "maintaining" is up or down a percentage or an amount. It's about what we each need to do in order to live a life without misery, without fear. There are some people who live in fear of the bill collector. I don't. I manage my money and when I get the electric bill, I pay it. I live my program, and if I am up a little, I cut back for a day or two. The main point is that I don't agonize over it. Life at goal is too beautiful to waste a day of it in the misery I worked so hard to put behind me.

My weight is still falling lower. I have yet to get into a maintenance. I don't know if it's fear of gaining that keeps me losing or I just don't have the appetite to eat more.

My ticker is +/- 5 pounds, but I keep joining the challenges for motivation and accountability. For the 143 center weight I chose, my +/-3% amounts to a little over 4 pounds on either side.

What a great question! And so many helpful responses. This has helped me find out my 3% range and I am pretty comfortable knowing that with a target of 145, I have a healthy (and do-able) range to shoot for!

Philosophically, I think maintenance is a state where any worries I have about my weight are balanced between worrying about gaining too much and worrying about losing too much. The range is a numerical indicator of what to shoot for, but the attitude is the real indicator that I'm mentally and emotionally in maintenance.

Good maintenance is when those worries are very small and don't interfere with the rest of life. It's tempting to say maintenance is when there are no worries about weight, but that mental attitude characterized the period when I managed to gain into borderline obesity.

As an ex-Weight Watcher, I always found their definition of maintenance as a two-pound range to be unrealistic. My hormonal fluctuations alone will have my weight shoot up three or four pounds overnight. I don't even take spikes like that into account anymore even though I weigh daily. As long as I'm at or near where I want to be for my weekly weigh, barring any unexpected upticks, I know I don't need to make any changes. I try to stay within my +/-3% range of 150 (which I've lowered to 148 for the purpose of our challenges and because I emotionally like being below 150) and would consider myself "off maintenance" if my weight went above 158, which would put me back in the overweight BMI category. I'd ammend that number if I started training for a bodybuilding competition or decided to become a semi-pro athlete where I'd have to take a greater muscle mass into account, but I don't see those things happening any time soon!

My name's Tina. I lost more than 90 pounds between March 2010 and March 2012 and have been keeping if off ever since.

I consider maintenance, for me, when I stay within a preset weight range that I've set for myself. My range is 135-140 lbs. Sometimes I'm under, but I haven't been over for a long time. (I had to lose 5 lbs during my first year of "maintenance.")

I love the challenges that are set here. 3% is a good goal for me to stay within. I can only weigh once a week otherwise, I get a little obsessive on the numbers. I use the tape measure and how my clothes fit to gage my weight the rest of the week.

What ever your definition is, I'm glad that you are here.

You kind of have to have a "range" because body weight (in all mammals) fluctuates daily. I think of 2 pounds over or under, just because that was Weight Watchers definition back in the day. If I am low, great; if I am up a little, I knock it off quickly without questioning whether it's water or stress or whatever. A couple of days of eating less is no big deal. Letting that couple of pounds creep up is the problem, so I watch it every day, make little adjustments, no agony, no angst. I can live without raisins in my oatmeal for a day or two. Maintenance is the long graph, not the short one.

There are lots of ways to define maintenance, and yes it can be kind of complicated. I have written several blog posts about that...

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_
individual.asp?blog_id=4323116

I personally use three working definitions:
www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_
individual.asp?blog_id=4996985

As the others have said, in the end, YOU get to define what maintenance is. For YOU. :-)

Never, ever, EVER give up!

From BMI 53 (336 lbs) to under 30. Now aiming for less than 20% body fat.

Most maintainers consider staying within a range maintaining. The tricky part is picking the right range. There are no firm guidelines on how to do that.

4AHEALTHYBMI desings the maintenance challenges around the concept of picking a central weight, and maintaining within 3% of that weight. I like that intellectually, but emontionally I feel better in the bottom part of whatever range I'm using than in the top part. Yeah, that's irrational; but there it is. I suppose it's a holdover from weight loss mode.

As to the range, I've been maintaining mostly in the 160-163 range for a little over a year. I go over or under a bit, and then I correct it. I'm not so sure that such a tight range is sustainable long term, and I'm not 100% positive that this is really where I need to be; but I'm pretty sure that below 160 would not be good for me. Where the upper limit should be is hazy. Certainly I can live with below 163; but perhaps I should be able to live with anything below 170? And if I manage to develop more muscle mass, how would I know to increase my target range?

It is a puzzle for me, even a year and a half after hitting my initial goal weight.

The answer is really what ever you want it to be. In our maintenance challenges, we use a +/- 3% from our target (middle) number. That gives enough of a spread to not freak out if the scale shifts a bit, but to encourage us to not stray too far to either side of "ideal".

I tend to give myself the range of about 116 to about 122 or so. Right now I am 123.5 and so working on getting back to my goal range. But I would still consider that maintenance. Not sure how far up though, as if I got above 130, I know I would consider that full weight loss mode again, I think. (Not sure if I should or not though.) Maybe there isn't much of a line between maintenance and weight loss, as right now, I consider myself in weight loss mode again to loose those 3ish pounds.
