Actually same as before! I tend to over eat when I am burning off 2,000 calories of dance AND Zumba. I'm just hungrier! emoticon

A little more than halfway through April--at my goal weight and holding again!! AND...I've managed to get to work early enough for a walk 6 days in a row now!! Pretty proud of that change in my routine.

I allow myself to emotional eat when I need it. I eat cereal, fruit and sandwich or something else that is nutritious. I feel like I need something sweet when there is yelling in the house or other stresses. I figure eating something might prevent me from having a panic attack since it distracts me. There are other distraction from panicking: music, funny videos, books, sudoku, going outside weather permitting, etc. Still, food can help calm my demons sometimes. If I'm very depressed or anxious, I can't eat at all.

I'd say keep it, Suzy! I don't think there's anything wrong with giving yourself a little treat as long as it's not throwing you off track. Enjoy your evening snack and otherwise eat only when hungry, lol!

I'm chiming in late on this thread. The one thing that probably should change is having an evening snack every night. I feel as if I "should" change this because I have a goal of eating only when I'm hungry, and I'm never PHYSICALLY hungry for that snack! It's an emotional hunger. I'm torn about this, because the snack is small, never increases, makes me happy, and doesn't throw me out of maintenance range. Yet it means that I never meet that goal of eating only when I'm hungry. Someone feel free to tell me I'm crazy! I feel like editing the goal to "Eat only when hungry--EXCEPT for that evening snack"!

I had to change my water intake to at least 8 glasses a day. I also had to watch my protein and carbs. I tend to be under with one or the other, more often protein. I also changed my exercise and became much more proactive in my approach!

I would like to change my thought.... it is only one! "I have exercised ALLOT today so I can eat at top of my tracker." Friday I worked out 240 un planned minutes (Except for a short 1 mile walk I slept & rested almost all day Sat.) Then yesterday was 250 minutes with Flash Mob & rehearsal. Eating at the top of my range gives me no wiggle room to go below my goal weight. Not every weekend is this intense. BUT it does happen at least 1 time a month. It is SO much better for me to spread the exercise out & keep to the lower end of my food tracker. I JUST NEED TO CHANGE THIS 1 THOUGHT, & I KNOW I will be a successful maintainer! I already am!

Thanks for your help! I love Spark People! It is THE way I can be healthy!!!!

Decades ago, WW magazine had whole menu suggestions for all the big holidays, legal food (that was the term) all laid out in beautiful array. It made holidays delicious, special, and beautiful.

Thanks so much for offering your thoughts on this, everyone. It's really helping me to see that so many others share this issue. I also often feel like I live from holiday to holiday and that I spend a lot of time undoing the damage I do at the holidays. Once I finally get to where I want to be and feel like I'm on a more even keel--bam! Another holiday rolls around and I'm repeating the same process. I also wonder if the day will ever come that I don't want to eat more. I make wonderful, healthy meals that I really enjoy, but there's rarely a time when I've finished eating and don't feel a strong desire for more. It takes all the willpower and discipline I've got not to cave in sometimes. The only exceptions are the times when I really overdo it--then, I can honestly say that I don't want to eat anything else!

KANOE10 left a great comment on my SparkPage about wanting to present an image of being a "perfect maintainer" and I know I definitely am guilty of that sometimes. The reality isn't always so pretty and it's a great comfort to see that I'm not alone in this.

Celia, I do think in terms of "legal" and "illegal" foods because those were official WW terms back when I was losing on the old old old WW plan. It just sort of stuck. And I no longer much care about what DH eats. I don't make chicken dishes because he won't eat chicken, but if I always made what he likes I'd been making grease and boiling vegetables to death. I also learned to make my own pizzas. That way I can put spinach and feta on my portion and anchovies on his, waaay away from the part I'll eat. No anchovy cooties for me.

I loved TJ's blog because it forced me to confront a nagging feeling that my weight-loss plan really was not a plan for the rest of my life. So I need to do some deep thinking on how to revise the way I eat in a manner that will still let me maintain. Specifically, my plan pushes most of my calories to the end of the day, so I enjoy a good dinner with DH and create minimal impact on him. I need to work toward greater balance throughout the day. As for legal and illegal foods, I don't use those terms. Nothing is illegal, but I choose not to eat candy, because it took me a long time to break my awful sugar habit. And when it comes to pizza, another trigger food, I continue to eat it, but I choose to eat 1 or 2 slices instead of half a pizza, and I don't do that every week, like I used to.

I would like for my splurges to be at family celebrations rather than unplanned at night when I'm alone.

I would like to use no - or very few - canned foods. Cooking more dry beans rather than using the low sodium canned beans could save me quite a bit of sodium and a few cents.

I want to do more meal planning and less last minute deciding what to eat.

I'd like to eat twice the number of vegetables as I do fruits.

I want to develop a calendar with a running season and a muscle building season. I'm thinking about 9 running months; 3 strength training months.

I would like to learn how to do that moving or rolling average for weigh in data. I want to leave the emotion out of weighing and use the scale as my tool not judge.

I would like to get more organized and do a better job at housekeeping without giving up exercise time.

I would like to find a more flattering hair style that is also good for running.

I want to increase my positive self-talk and be less affected by negative comments from my mother and husband.

I still need to become regular with ST. At the moment it's all right because I'm committed to an osteoporosis course at a gym for 10 weeks. It's free and I'll have to decide what to do when it's finished. I never get the "high" that people talk about after exercising but I know the activity is good for me. I just need to get the emotional attachment to sedentary things, especially hobbies that require computer time - reading, genealogy and SP!

Sugar is something that I need to just try to live without!
It is addictive to me but if I do without it for awhile it starts to taste really bad to me.
I want it to taste bad to me!
Sugar and alcohol are things that I need to forgo or I will just pile my weight back on.

One thing I wish would change, but which I don't think I have any control over, is the fact that I often still want to eat when I am not hungry on weekends. It has been working very well for me to not have sweets during the week. Over three years, the number of times and amount I "go crazy" with has certainly decreased, so I am pleased with that progress. I am very sure that trying to allow myself a small dessert more often would not be the best choice for me. For one thing, I don't prefer them anymore and find that they ruin my appetite for more savory and satisfying foods. I think it has more to do with the fact that I have more unstructured time on weekends. So I guess the real thing I want to change about maintenance is to find more satisfying activities to fill my time between my wonderful meals.

I also have not yet gotten consistent with exercise.

But I'm also clear that I am not committed to these changes yet, so I don't beat myself up about it. I know this is likely the "contemplation" phase.

I have noticed that if I try to restrict my treats, it tends to trigger periodic binges, but I would like to have a better balance on that kind of calorie consumption myself. Most of the time I feel in control of it, but I just realized yesterday, that I'm kind of dreading Easter--I feel like I haven't had enough recovery time from the last round of holidays to feel comfortable allowing myself to have a treat without going overboard. With that in mind, I think it would be a great idea for me to be sure and bring a substantial contribution of fresh fruit/ non-starchy veggie to the Easter gathering that I will be attending, because if I don't bring it--there probably won't be anything but starchy veggies, high fat/starch casseroles, high sodium meat dishes, and an assortment of desserts. All of which I will have no control over, so I will plan to contribute something I can control--and I'm hoping that will assist me in going overboard on all the rest :)

I want to change my snacking habits. I no longer want to snack after my evening meal. 6 weeks to form a habit, right? So with any goal that I've obtained, I need to set a start date and get to it.
I'm emotionally attached to my evening snack/s and it's wrecking havoc on my maintenance efforts and could lead me right back to where I began. I understand this yet it is still a difficult commitment to make.

This is why I don't do "treat" meals, or at least no more than once a year. The compensation is miserable, and too many people put off that misery, thus gaining weight. I find it easier to redefine "treat" to mean something legal that I love, usually a meal that is a lot of work. The older I get the less well I deal with misery, so why bring it on myself? To me that illegal treat just isn't worth it.

I just wrote a blog about some changes that I'd like to change about my maintenance plan in order to feel healthier and more balanced. Although I'm thrilled that I've been able to maintain my losses this past year, I realize that there's still lots of room for improvement in my plan. Basically, although I feel that I've balanced things out enough to ensure that I'm not gaining weight, I still feel like my weekly maintenance plan operates at too much of an extreme and that I end up feeling uncomfortable on both ends. That is, because I tend to go haywire with my weekly treat meals, I have to restrict myself to levels that I think are excessive to compensate for them. My goal for the coming year is to get things on a more even keel so that I can spread my treats out over the week and so I don't have a compulsion to go nuts once Saturday rolls around.

I'm curious to see if others have any areas that they'd like to change in their maintenance plans or if you've already made them, how you managed to successfully incorporate those changes. Thanks so much for sharing your ideas!
