It really wouldn't surprise me if it's 80/20 food/exercise. I lost my first 30 pounds this time by making zero changes to my activity- all my initial changes were with food choice and portion size and staying within a daily budget by keeping a food journal. My feet hurt too much to increase my exercise, and I didn't want to burn myself out and quit all together by causing myself misery, so I focused on food only (this was not my first rodeo...I had done the intense exercise and severe calorie restriction with substantial success in the past, but always burned out and went back to old ways, because it wasn't sustainable for me).
I definitely exercise more and more intensely now than I did when I first began, but I still think my food choices have more immediate impact on the scale than the exercise does, since I only work out a few times a week and still maintain fairly easily, because I pay close attention to what and how much I put in my mouth.
Just my experience on that :)

Scale went down, but I'm not really even going to report it. I'm pretty sure it will just be going back up while I'm on vacation. I think I'll just hold off on reporting weight till I get back and settle back into my routine, though I'm not going to neglect nutrition or fitness while away. I just won't have access to a scale. Oh wait, maybe my son has one, just thought of that! I'd feel more comfortable if I could keep an eye on my weight while away. But I only weigh myself naked before breakfast, and I won't be at his house before breakfast. Oh well. I need to just go and have a good time.
4 days till take off!

I hadn't heard that particular percentage breakdown. And I'm sure Tina will get arguments about it, but I'm inclined to agree that it isn't 50/50. Without close and tough attention to nutrition (i.e., calories), I couldn't have reached my current goal. My fitness remained the same, and it's pretty good. I certainly couldn't do more than I'm doing, which left nutrition as a big factor.

Hi team.
Love reading about all your news. I just read Tina's email where she casually states:
It's 80% nutrition
and 20% fitness.
I had never heard that nutrition was 80% of the equation. That's good for me to know. Scale was nearly the same this morning. Workout today was a long brisk walk with a good friend. That was good for my soul. Also went to Advent service last night, which was good for the soul. Eating lean today. So far, so good. Waiting for results of a stressful event--and am praying for a good outcome.
Hope everyone has a good day.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my SIL's blog yesterday. I'm trying to get her motivated without being over bearing. I'm good at being overbearing when it comes to exercise and nutrition :)

I had a great plan for today. Trying a new kettlebell workout and already had a to do list for the office. Woke up in the middle of the night with the stomach virus! Now I'm sitting here at the computer sipping water trying not to puke or poop. Ugh! Hope this passes quickly.

Susan - You had me at whiskey company! That would be fun if you got to tour the facility.

Tortise - Good job on your dr appointment.

Brooklyn- I've been snotty lately too. Sounds like you need to get away!

Kitty - Good luck! I've never been good at working from home.

Suzy - I hate when people state "facts" about exercise/nutation that I know are false. I usually just try to keep it in the first person or blame the experts. "I don't believe that. I believe this." or "I read an article that said..." A little less confrontational, at least I think so :)

Laura - I've been trying to look at my week as a whole rather than just one or two bad meals. Finish the week strong!

self - respect - I don't like the darkness this time of year either.

Michelle - Why does salty food have to be so good!?

oneweigh - good work on holding back on the pizza. BBQ pork with red onions? Not sure I would've been able to refrain!

Jane - you are amazing! Think I might've returned to walking with a boo boo like that.

Thomasina - I hope its not RA too! Some of the meds they are prescribing for that are really rough.

Celia - great work!

Tortise - Isn't it wonderful? I love not worrying about what the scale will say when I have to jump on one for someone else. I also love picking clothes right off the rack without worrying whether they will look good or not.

Laura - I know exactly how you feel. I get quite attached to my routine and when I don't follow through, for whatever reason, it upsets me. Especially the overeating "hangover". I despise that feeling.

I did very well on snacking last night. I did snack... Greek yogurt, grapes, and walnuts... ONE Serving. Breaking this snacking habit will take constant vigilance... possibly for the rest of my life. That's good, though. If it were easy I may take it for granted and lack understanding when assisting others on their journey.

Oh! I almost forgot! Swede - I saw pictures of your border collie. We had one dear collie for 13 years. She was the most wonderful friend to us in our family. She fell ill 2 years ago and we had to let her go to Heaven. It was very difficult for all of us. Now just 2 weeks ago we adopted an Australian shepherd... she's 7 weeks old. She's quickly taken over our hearts and our home! She's an amazing creature.

Love reading about your joys and concerns!

Yesterday, I did it! I held my eating in check all day so DH and I could go out for salad, pizza, and beer last night. When I tallied everything up, I saw I was 17 calories below my limit, but then I realized I had logged an apple that I never ate, so I did even better!

Good Morning from the West Coast! I'm still tired, but not quite as much as yesterday. I went for an xray on my hands yesterday as the joints are quite red and swelling and the wrists are joining in. I'm hoping it's not RA.. I'll take plain old osteo arthritis any day over RA.. I should know within a week or so.

Well, today started well. I got introduced to liquid bandages. It stings a bit on the knee, but SO much better than having to bandage areas of the scab that break open, since the scrape is right on the joint.

I ran 6.2 miles in 61 minutes today on the track at the gym. I decided that will be my new routine (running on the track) until I can comfortably wear tights or leggings over my wound. Headed back to the gym to get my body composition evaluated tonight, and will probably try a step class.

Brooklyn - hope you feel better!

Susan - Congrats on the time for your run today! :)

Suzy - I hear ya about your frustrations. I know I hear them often myself. I have an office potluck a week from tomorrow, and I'm just planning on bringing my lunch as always and bringing the slow cooker Spinach and Artichoke Dip that's on the sparkrecipes site. If people want to give me crap, that's their problem and not mine. I just remember how I gorged myself last year (especially on the desserts!) and how that was part of how I gained the final 15 pounds during the month of December, and that was a different person.

Laura - I may be doing your workouts. emoticon emoticon I didn't mean to steal them, HONEST!

ONEWEIGH - glad you were able to make the most of what I call a "Cool Hand Luke" moment: a failure to communicate!

Keep on keeping on, folks! Have a WONDERFUL Thursday! :)

I took my Mom shopping after work yesterday, so when I got home I got started immediately on getting dinner ready: salad and homemade pizza (roasted pork with barbecue sauce and red onion). I have the pizza ready to go into the oven and I think to check my email. Husband says he's going to a team dinner and then straight to visit his mom. Team dinner? Thanks for letting me know! As it happens, he didn't know about it until just before he emailed me. Anyway, the pizza wasn't that big, so I thought about eating the whole thing, but I ate my half slowly and decided that it was enough. Of course, I did know that it was my choir conductor's birthday and that there would be cake at rehearsal! Even with cake I was OK on calories (guessing, of course, on the cake). Looking forward to a day off work tomorrow just for me!

Back up the .6 I was down yesterday.
Weigh-in at my WW meeting tonight, and looking forward to getting new materials on their new 360 program. I am thinking that WW is finally starting to include healthy habit building tools/incentives like Spark does with Spark Streaks and Fast Break. The story is that the new program addition will help support maintainers better too, so I'm curious.
Had sauerkraut with my supper last night-so I'm blaming the extra sodium for the little jump in the scale again (keep craving the salt lately), since I was right on target food-wise in every other sense.
Have a great day!

Got a walk in before work this morning - beautiful out! So hard to get my 10,000 steps in, though, with the days getting shorter. C'mon Yule! emoticon Pat

emoticon I woke up guilty and mad at myself. I had a mini-binge last night AND SKIPPED ANOTHER WORKOUT. That's the 2nd one this week. What in the world is draining all my willpower? It's not like I've got a lot going on... the days I've skipped I've just watched Big Bang Theory on the couch stuffing my face.

I know one thing's for sure, I won't wake up tomorrow with this same guilty/bloated/sick feeling. And I WILL meet my fitness goal this week!

Susan-- what an interesting assignment!
Brooklyn-- I hope you feel better soon. Tea with honey always makes my throat feel better.
Suzy-- I needed to hear that as much as your SparkFriend. The plans are in the works for the office Christmas party next week, and they're wanting to do a potluck lunch AND go out to dinner in the same day. I'm going to need my willpower to make a reappearance right about.. NOW.

Oh no, Brooklyn! Don't get sick now! When do you leave on your cruise?

I always work at home, and always hope to get a lot done!

One of my SparkFriends just said something that really pushed my buttons, and I'm debating about "calling" her on it. We all get hit hard this time of year with holiday parties and lunches, right? She said that she was going to eat just a bit if she was served something she had no control over. Maybe I'm a control freak, but under what circumstances do we have "no control" over what we eat? Even over the holidays, we aren't strapped down and force-fed goodies, are we? You can always decline something--"I'm allergic to X," "Maybe next time," "I'm really stuffed," "I ate such a late breakfast." There's always a way to politely say no. Geez. Don't get me started about people with fancy excuses.

Allergies in December? Sneezing, itchy throat etc? What's with this? DH suggests it's leaf mold. OK, no more shuffling through them. Time to bring out the antihistamines and decongestants. We've had extremes of temps lately. Who knows what's out there.

I think a light indoor workout would be smart today.

The race is not always to the swift, but to those who keep on running.

Good dr's visit yesterday. Nice to go without worrying what the scale will say! Lol

You have me curious about the Nobel, Swede. It is always exciting to see who wins for peace. Now I want to find out more about how the prize works. Thanks.

good morning! the scale was very kind to me today, i rarely start the "day" at midnight under 104, so i must have done something right to score 103.6 already now - my lowest weight is mid-day after exercise. nutrition was good, homemade split pea soup and hummus for lunch, black bean spinach quesadillas for dinner. and a great run - 5 miles in 61 minutes, we are *that* close to one hour... and i even did a bootcamp video for ST!

re the nobel prize - the "news" will be next week (though the winners were announced in october) when the ceremony is held in stockholm (and oslo for the peace prize); i translated several articles about the history of the prize, how winners are selected, "Nobel fever" in sweden, etc - all very interesting and fun to write, as opposed to my standard stuff, like the intricacies of electronic locks - or the financial performance of a swedish whiskey company!

wishing all a great day!
