I haven't had liver since I hit goal. Just thought I'd mention that. I can't stand to even be in the same house with liver cooking.

Thanks, WolfKitty, for posting that message. Suspect I've already had my share of the limelight.

Nell, your accomplishment is not diminished by how long ago it was or by the method. Man, I lost weight several times with 5 fish meals and 1 liver meal weekly, but I didn't keep it off. You did!! Very impressive.

I'm afraid that even though I've kept my weight off for long time, my story is long ago, unphotographed, and testament to Weight Watchers' old old old old Plan rather than Sparkpeople. I got an email from Spark a few weeks ago asking if they could use my words, and of course I said yes, but no one will say Wow with losing weight by eating fish five times a week. Keeping it off? Sure, but actually losing it, my story is very dull indeed.

Got this message today in sparkmail, which I'm sure some of you saw too... I think that people should make their own choice whether they want to be in the spotlight and am not sure if I would submit anyone else's name... But if you already have a list of people who want to share their story, or if anyone here could benefit from a team email going out so they can volunteer themselves, here's a copy of the email with the address they'd like people to use.

Dear SparkPeople Community Team,

The SparkPeople Public Relations Team is always looking for new ways to ‘spread the SPARK’ by featuring our members’ motivational success stories both in the media and on the site. Right now, we largely work with those individuals who utilize the Weight Tracker tool, but we know there are tons more success stories out there!

We would love it if you, as a leader in the SparkPeople community, would send us the screen names of people who have achieved weight loss that would make people say, “Wow!” upon seeing the before and afters, and/or people who have incredible life transformation stories whether they’ve lost substantial weight or not. We would love to reach out to them. We’ll take any or all screen names, whether the member tracks their weight or not (which you don’t have to know). Please send your replies to sparkpeoplesuccess@gmail.com if you would be so kind!
Thanks so much for your assistance and your ongoing efforts to support and encourage others on SparkPeople!

SparkCheers,

SparkPeople Public Relations Team

Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to read and 'like' my recent blogs. Being a member of this wonderfully active and supportive team has given me a lot of food for thought and I learn something new about myself and the process of maintaining on near-daily basis. Maintainers and the issues we face have been earning much more attention around SparkPeople.com these days, which we hope will create an increasingly supportive environment to those who are transitioning, those who are in the earlier phases of maintenance and those who continue to beat the odds and have maintained long term.

This week, we'd like to offer a male perspective and one that's a bit different from many of the other blogs we've highlighted. We’d like to introduce you to a recent post written by BREWMASTERBILL. Although he's been amazed by many of his fellow maintainers' stories, BREWMASTERBILL admits that his isn't nearly as exciting. He chalks up his slow gains to a sedentary desk job that led not only to ill-fitting clothes but also to feelings of disgust. Rather than wallowing in that disgust, BREWMASTERBILL chose to channel his negativity into motivation to fuel his journey to better health. Realizing that negative motivation was not enough to help him navigate his weight-loss journey, he joined SparkPeople where the support he received helped carry him across the weight-loss finish line and into maintenance.

BREWMASTERBILL's mission statement is "continually refining a no-BS approach to achieving goals." For him, weight loss and subsequent maintenance is about achieving goals and tempering those goals with reality. While his experience runs a bit against the grain, he hopes others, whether they are losing or maintaining, will benefit just as he hopes to continue to benefit from their experiences. At 37 years old he keeps up with the 20-somethings that he plays sports with and can usually outrun them, outlift them, and in a number of instances, outperform them. One teammate told him, it's because he has that "old guy determination". Another female teammate said, "you're like a brand new man". And according to BREWMASTERBILL himself, "I am a brand new man."

In his blog, "Maintenance - My Take", BREWMASTERBILL deals with breaking down maintenance into its simplest form, which he summarizes as staying focused on your motivators and following a reasonable diet and exercise plan; the idea is that maintenance is something that needs to last forever:

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
ur
nal_individual.asp?blog_id=5078058

We encourage you to read BREWMASTERBILL's blog and if you agree that his message about simplifying maintenance so that it can more easily become a permanent state is helpful, please 'like' it so that it can become more visible to other people here on SparkPeople.com.

If you come across a blog post that deals with issues connected to maintenance that you find particularly insightful and think would be useful to highlight, please let us know! It doesn’t have to be recent if the message is still relevant. We’re continuing to compile a list of blogs that we’d like to use at some point in the future but can always use a few extra pairs of eyes to help us navigate the many blogs that are posted daily.

Thank you again for your continued support of our members and efforts to highlight the challenges and rewards of maintenance from a broad variety of perspectives. As always, please feel free to ask me or one of the other leaders if you have any questions.

I saw that one too and I agree it's a good candidate. :-)

I like the ones that make me think - which often means I disagree with some of the points.

For me it's helpful to think about what exactly I disagree about and WHY I disagree...

I might disagree with some of Bill's details; but I totally resonate to his theme that the details are side effects of the mental side, which he calls keeping your head in the game.

Greetings, fellow maintainers and those transitioning to maintenance!

Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to read and 'like' _LINDA's blog, "Stand Tall and Walk Proud." _LINDA's story of overcoming limitations imposed by her Rheumatoid Arthritis is universally inspiring and, as we hoped, her blog was voted a 'Popular Member Blog Post'. This has also helped to increase awareness of the issues and challenges maintainers face in general.

This week, we'd like to let you know about a recent blog written by one of our team leaders, TINAJANE76. Tina only recently came to maintenance (6 months, so far), after years of chronic yo-yo dieting. Although new to the scene, as you’ve probably noticed she’s a powerful force in advocating for maintenance.

The blog of interest that Tina wrote talks about her first six months of maintenance and how her experiences compare with some of the research on successful maintenance. One of the interesting points she brings up is that just because a strategy is less common, doesn’t mean it won’t work for some people. As in weight loss we each have to figure out what will work best for us. And the longer we keep seeking strategies, trying them, and evaluating them, the better we will get at this.

I encourage you to read Tina's blog and if you agree that her message about tailoring maintenance strategies is inspiring, please 'like' it so that it can become more visible to other people here on SparkPeople.com.

Tina wrote another recent blog that has already received enough votes to get “Popular” status. It’s about the top ten things she wished she’d known about maintenance before she got here. If you haven’t seen it yet, you might enjoy it, too:

Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to read and 'like' SLENDERELLA61's recent blog, "Please Read This Blog If You've Gained Weight Back Before". SLENDERELLA61's story of ups and downs is one so many people here on SparkPeople.com can relate to and, as we hoped, her blog was voted a 'Popular Member Blog Post'. This has brought much-deserved attention to SLENDERELLA61's many successes and is also helping to increase awareness of the issues and challenges maintainers face in general.

This week, we'd like to turn your attention to a recent blog written by _LINDA. Her story and success are particularly notable because she lives with the severe chronic pain of Rheumatoid Arthritis. In addition to taking on two to as many as four fitness classes a day plus speed walking to and from her gym, _LINDA also loves hiking, reading and movies. She plays and manages a busy bridge club, is a member of the Probus Club and enjoys social activities with them. She credits the fact that she is single and lives alone with making her more responsible for what she brings into her apartment and eats, which goes a long way in helping her to stay on track. _LINDA is fortunate to have a very supportive mom who has helped her get through all her surgeries. We believe that _LINDA is an amazing example that we can ALL be successful in our efforts to lead healthier lives in spite of the sometimes seemingly insurmountable obstacles we encounter along the way.

At one point bound to a wheelchair due to her extreme pain, _LINDA's blog, "Stand Tall and Walk Proud", chronicles her battle to reclaim her health, develop an amazing level of fitness and live her life to the absolute fullest in spite of joint replacements, countless rounds of surgery and still-daily pain:

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
ur
nal_individual.asp?blog_id=5055385

We encourage you to read _LINDA's blog and if you agree that her message about tackling adversity head on is inspiring, please 'like' it so that it can become more visible to other people here on SparkPeople.com.

Once again, if you come across a blog post that deals with issues connected to maintenance that you find particularly insightful and think would be nice to highlight, please let us know! It doesn’t have to be recent if the message is still relevant. We’re continuing to compile a list of blogs that we’d like to use at some point in the future but can always use a few extra pairs of eyes to help us navigate the many blogs that are posted daily.

Welcome CSDays! Glad you've joined us. Love the way you claim motivation as "a daily bath." It does take daily commitment.

My 9-15-12 blog "How I Found My Inner Jock" currently has 89 comments. I think I picked up readers as a result of this team's supporting my maintenance blog. Thanks again!

I am maintaining since March 2009 but I go to TOPS each week to stay in touch and I use SP each day! Motivation is a daily bath and it helps to help others. I saw this group and hope I can add to it.
I'm from Indy (close-Plainfield) and I went to Portage, IN this week end for a Spark Rally!! We had 7 great speakers and then Chris SparkGuy was on Skype! We made a day of it and dined together healthy. Then the evening was spent visiting--how rare. It was very nice. Indygirl and her friend Hoosiergirlindy made all of the arrangements!!

How They Beat the Odds was great to read. Gives me hope as I start Week 3 of Maintenance. Losing weight has never been hard for me, once I made my mind up. I have lost and lost weight over the decades. It is keeping it off that I have never been good at in the past. This time, I have more knowledge, better understanding of what is at stake, and also feel the community here at SP is enormously helpful. I will use the same determination that I used to lose weight to keep it off this time. I am so glad I found this group!

That would be awesome, Ishigirl. Might title it, "Beating the Odds" or "Results Not Typical" or maybe something even more creative!!!!!

Here is a thought. what if Sparkpeople decided one of their next book projects was entitled "Sparkpeople~ Maintainers" and features some of our members there and how each person maintains their weight for the long haul.

I would like to nominate it to be highlighted. She is a great example of someone overcoming big challenges to live a healthy lifestyle.

She frequently does put pictures in her blog, and I wonder if she would not like to include a picture of her kickboxing. Also, the blog might be easier to read divided into a couple paragraphs, but I wouldn't change a word.

Thanks for highlighting my blog today. It is an honor!

A big thank you to everyone who took the time to read and 'like' WATERMELLEN's recent blog, "Productive Failure: Motivation and Maintenance Take Grit!". As we hoped, it was voted a 'Popular Member Blog Post' and has not only highlighted WATERMELLEN's fantastic accomplishments but is also helping to increase awareness of the issues and challenges maintainers face in general.

This week, we'd like to shine the spotlight on a blog written by SLENDERELLA61 earlier this month, when we first started spotlighting such posts. Although it was written a few weeks ago, it addresses an important and recurring maintenance issue--regain.

Like many people here on SparkPeople.com, SLENDERELLA61 has lost and regained significant amounts of weight multiple times in her life. Even though she's now maintained for three and a half years, she still wakes up amazed to see a slender person in the mirror. After many years of struggle, she's overjoyed that she's finally doing it, finally getting it right and is so much happier living at goal than she was living overweight. She retired early just over a year ago to provide child care to her almost two-year-old and five-year-old granddaughters six days a week. She lovingly refers to her kindergartener as her "personal coach" who helps keep her active during her non-exercise hours. SLENDERELLA61 is tremendously grateful for all of the support she has received here on SparkPeople.com and especially from the members of our team.

In her blog, "Please Read This Blog If You've Gained Weight Back Before," SLENDERELLA61 focuses on the things that have been different about her weight management journey this time compared to her past efforts. We believe her message is a beacon of hope and optimism for all people who have been through the disappointing and frustrating process of serial losses and regains:

nal_individual.asp?blog_id=5042750

We encourage you to read this blog and if you agree that the message about never giving up on yourself and your weight management goals is helpful, please 'like' it so that it can become more visible to other people here on SparkPeople.com, and perhaps provide hope to someone else who has stumbled along the way.

If you come across a blog post that deals with issues connected to maintenance that you find particularly insightful and think would be nice to highlight, please let us know! It doesn’t have to be recent if the message is still relevant. We’re compiling a list of blogs that we’d like to use at some point in the future but can always use a few extra pairs of eyes to help us navigate the many blogs that are posted daily.

Thank you again for your continued support of our members and efforts to highlight the challenges of maintenance from a broad variety of perspectives. As always, please feel free to ask me or one of the other leaders if you have any questions.

Thanks so much for all your comments on my "Productive Failure" blog: Of course it's fun for me to have a "popular blog" post (and I have tried to respond to each of you . . . ) but it's so terrific to focus attention on the important contribution of the At Goal and Maintaining: Transition to Maintenance Team!

We'd like to give everyone a great big 'thank you' for helping to highlight ONEKIDSMOM and her recent blog about her identity as a maintainer. As we hoped, it was named a 'Popular Member Blog Post' and not only gave her much-deserved recognition but is also continuing our efforts to draw attention to the needs, struggles and successes of maintainers around SparkPeople.com.

This week we'd like to turn your attention to a recent blog written by WATERMELLEN. After losing 80 pounds and going from 230 to 150 in 2001-2002, WATERMELLEN maintained her losses for several years. In 2009 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and subsequently gained 22 pounds. While undergoing radiation therapy, she found SparkPeople.com and was able to get comfortably back into her size 8s once again. Initially frustrated by her ups and downs on maintenance, she credits her discovery of Judith S. Beck's Beck Diet Solution in January 2011 with helping her to take off another 10 pounds and teaching her how to take the yo-yoing out of her maintenance range.

In her blog, "Productive Failure: Motivation and Maintenance Take Grit!", WATERMELLEN references a recent article aimed at parents of young children that deals with the importance of building character, persistence, curiosity, optimism and grit by allowing children to fail. WATERMELLEN believes we can transfer that message to our weight loss and maintenance journeys and help us move beyond the perpetual roller coaster of yo-yo dieting:

ur
nal_individual.asp?blog_id=5041615

We encourage you to read this blog and if you agree that its message about maintenance taking true grit is useful, please 'like' it so that it can become more visible to other people here on SparkPeople.com.

Hey Maintainers,
I am far from a maintainer as I have only recently started an earnest weightloss program yet I am exactly a maintainer because I have adjusted my nutrition routine to fit a life plan that I intend to maintain forever. I follow Dr Fuhrman's " Eat to Live" program the basic tenet of which is to develop and nurture the most healthy body support plan, both nutrition and exercise. This plan will then, in time, naturally drive your body weight to it's best level.

Sounds easy but all the issues you struggle with on this team are my issues. Several of your members are also on my ETL team and have talked up this team on our threads so I came over to investigate.

I have found your comments and blogs to be pertinent, thoughtful, and articulate. Your success and discipline are motivational in themselves but so to is the idea that there is a group of you who are willing to actively advertise, spread the tools, and provide support. I intend to take full advantage and to contribute as I can.

Thanks for spending the time and effort.

TinaJane and Nell, Thanks for the feedback. I'll look for blogs that suit and I'll take a stab at trying to write one, too. Most of my blogs are too focused on the moment. I'll try to take a longer view. Highlighting maintenance can only help all of us!!

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts here and for your wonderful feedback. I think the nature of maintenance means that we should be one of the most active teams here on SparkPeople if we want to stay successful. There's so much that we can all learn from our fellow maintainers and it's a real comfort for me to know that there are other people who are going through some of the same struggles I am, even if we take different approaches to dealing with them. It makes me really happy to hear that you're finding our team and recent activity personally helpful and motivating. That's really what all of this comes down to.

I just want to say that I am one of those members who DID join Sparkpeople after losing the majority of my weight. I actually joined to help me maintain my weight and I ended up losing the last 10 lbs to goal. I have been a member of this team for awhile. At first I was really excited to be on the team but then I realized the team was like a lot of the other teams I was already on. They were not motivating for me, but I am self-motivated so that wasn't a surprise. The thing that has been the most inspirational and motivating for me has been seeing the recent activity and "Shining the Spotlight" on long time maintainers. My Spark has been relit by all of the team activity and the great emails TINAJANE76 has been sending out. I think it is awesome that we are lifting up our own team members and giving them the recognition they deserve. I applaud everyone's efforts and am excited to see what will happen!

I think those are fantastic ideas, Marsha. If you could help point me in the direction of blogs that deal with those issues, I'd sure appreciate it. They don't have to be recent. It's the message that's the important thing.

What messages do we want to spotlight?

The first ones that come to my mind:

* maintenance is possible, absolutely do-able;
* people who lose weight can maintain, even those who previously did not;
* maintaining a significant weight loss takes work and consistent effort;
* exercise, wise food choices, and portion control are key maintenance concepts;
* no matter what, don't give up. do the best you can each day. accept that many maintainers will have occasional slips. getting right back on track is the most important maintenance skill for many
* Maintaining SparkFriends understand what maintenance takes even when the people in your real life don't have a clue
