We'd like to thank you for your continued support of our fellow maintainers and for helping us to highlight our most experienced maintainer, NELLJONES. Not only was Nell's blog selected as a 'Popular Member Blog Post' but she has also finally received recognition as a 'SparkPeople Motivator'. Nell has acquired a wealth of knowledge and wisdom in the 41+ years she’s maintained and she very generously shares it with those of us who are newer to the process. It's been wonderful to see more attention drawn to Nell and everything that she has accomplished.

This week, we'd like to focus on a recent blog written by ONEKIDSMOM. Like many of us, ONEKIDSMOM has struggled with many ups and downs over the course of her life. She's maintained long term in the past only to relapse and regain. This time, she has maintained a 75-pound loss for just over two years, the point when the statistical odds of regain drop to 50%, and she is more than 100 pounds below her lifetime highest weight. She approaches maintenance 'one day at a time' and hopes to stick with her healthier habits for the rest of her life.

In this blog, she focuses on her identity as a maintainer, her fears, and how she works to overcome them and why ongoing support has been so vital to her success:

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_

individual.asp?blog_id=5017681

We encourage you to read this blog and if you agree that its message is useful, please 'like' it so that it can become more visible to other people here at SparkPeople.com.

Thank you again for your continued support of our team effort to highlight the challenges of maintenance from a broad variety of perspectives. As always, please feel free to ask me or one of the other leaders if you have any questions.

While out on the boards, just now, I spotted a call out for *maintenance*, so I posted an invite to the team and even sent her one in Spark Mail. Hope she joins! emoticon

Just about, daily, I'm making several posts over on the main message boards, offering up advice as needed. All we can do, is to keep ourselves as visible as possible, to those in the losing process and be there when they ask for our advice.

Great questions and ideas! I put a message up on the Community Boards with a little information about our team along with a link to our page:

www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/messageb
oa
rd.asp?imboard=31&imparent=28620957

We could leave similar messages in other high visibility areas people might look to for support. I've also been spreading the word about our team with some of the other teams I belong to. Could be something we can encourage our other members to do as well.

That's a good question, Nell! And I'd love to see the folks who came to SP for maintenance. My hope is that as we gain visibility, those people will find us.

I love that TINAJANE76 came up with the ideas for promoting our team within SP. It really seems to be working and lots of people are aware of us now who weren't, before. Membership in the team is growing by leaps and bounds.

And I get a sense that by all of us being more vocal in our blogs and voting on them for greater visibility, we may be finally creating a conversation about maintenance on the site.

I've seen many blog and forum comments these past few days from people who said they'd never even heard of this team.

The only other place I can think of that we might not yet be reaching is the community boards.
www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/mycommun
it
y.asp

It might be helpful if our members could browse them to see if there are posts from people looking for advice or support related to maintenance. If we see such posts, we can try to answer them and then suggest that if more information or viewpoints are desired, they could come see our team and ask us here...

For when we're short on time I've created some searches of the forums based on common words related to posts about maintenance. You can see them here:
docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1qvh
-M
YbU8iPkFRYhsOvcPNRMPrGOwKohNpgGnTIdU_k

If this page is helpful, please let me know. Also, if there are other words you think would be good to add, I can put searches for them in there, too!

Each of us has something unique and helpful to contribute to the conversation about maintenance here. Both within our own forums and blogs, and in comments on blogs and forums on the rest of the site. The more of us there are who talk about it, the more likely I think we'll collectively be heard!

I agree. It isn't a few squeaky wheels that are heard but many. Spark is a relatively new resource compared to Nutrisystem or Weight Watchers or Jenny, or even sites like eDiets. We can make our presence known on the boards to come on over here when they reach goal rather than fade away, but I wonder how to capture the many people (like me) who discover Spark only while at goal? I was on eDiets to lose the menopause 10 just for the support (WW had changed to Points and I wasn't interested in changing my program), and I met a bunch of wonderful women who found Spark-which was FREE-and I still talk to them every day in a private group. It's the people that matter. I can't imagine a day without the familiar icons and words of my friends I have met online. They are what keep me focused and happy.

I wonder how many people we can find who didn't lose their weight on Spark, yet can come here and share the rest of their life's journey with us?

Nell

The Topic of maintaining and eating healthy and being active after weight loss is important and harder then losing the weight in the first place Everybody knows the stats on keeping what we have work so hard for. More motivational articles for us not to slide back to obesity.
The truth is it is easier to sell and market to the people on weight loss programs then people who are trying to stay slimmer and healthy.
This is a great marketing idea Call SparkMaintainer, With journals, refrigerator magnets , daily calendar for encouragement, to keep the good life. and so on. Never give up , The Kitchen is off limits between meals. Water is filling.
Lastly I still find it hard, even now. The only expert is me in my house for maintaining.
I hope SparkPEOPLE will pick the ball and do something for us , the few and proud .

I think all of our individual efforts, participation and word-of-mouth will also help push maintenance up the priority ladder. Certainly feel free to post to SparkGuy and SparkCoaches about the importance of maintenance as an area for SparkPeople to make a priority for their efforts. Squeaky wheels! :-)

Hi SUSIEQ911! Yes, I know that 4A-HEALTHY-BMI and RUSSLANE in particular have worked very hard to get more resources and attention for maintainers with very little success the past few years. We're hoping some of our new tactics will perk up the ears of the site's management a bit more.

Since I'm new this may sound like a dumb question.

Has anyone actually been able to talk to the powers that be about this issue? I thought I read something in a thread somewhere but I don't recall for sure.

There has to be some way to talk to an actual person about the importance of highlighting maintainers.

Sorry if this has been addressed.

Love you, Nell! Thanks for hanging in there to encourage the rest of us!

I've been trying Spark Coach, and a couple of days ago, my entry on the check-in thread reported that I had hit the 3-month mark for maintenance and stated my goal of getting to the 1-year mark. So there's at least one maintainer on Spark Coach.

We'd like to give a big thank you to all of our members who 'liked' PERIWINKLE88's blog about transitioning to maintenance. As we hoped, it was named a 'Popular Member Blog Post' and is an important step in helping to give additional recognition to our successful maintainers while raising awareness in the entire community about our team and the unique challenges maintainers face.

We’d love to keep the momentum of our efforts going by highlighting NELLJONES' recent blog about maintenance. It considers the WHY behind continued maintenance, which is an aspect different from weight loss, and rarely discussed. Nell knows what she’s talking about; she’s the longest maintainer we know about here on SparkPeople.com (41+ years!).

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
ur
nal_individual.asp?blog_id=5021780

If you have time, please read her blog post and if you agree that it would be helpful to people who are maintaining or making the transition to maintenance, please “like” it!

One very remarkable thing about NELLJONES is that she has stuck around and is very active on the site specifically to help aspiring maintainers. In spite of this, she hasn't been voted as a Motivational Member yet. In addition to 'liking' her recent blog, you could also nominate her as a Motivator in the "weight loss" category on her SparkPage. In addition, if you find her page and blogs helpful, please help us to spread the word about what it really MEANS to have maintained for that long by sharing her story with your Spark friends and other Spark teams.

To see more maintenance-oriented blog posts, you can also browse the team blogs here:

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_recent_bl
og
s.asp?groupID=1111

We encourage you to 'like' any of the blogs you read and find particularly helpful, both here and elsewhere, to give the site's management a better idea of the kind of information that is most useful to its membership. Also, if enough of us all “like” the same blogs, they’ll automatically end up a 'Popular Member Blog Post’ and become more visible (and helpful) to the community at large. It takes about 25-30 votes for this to happen.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us to provide more resources for our maintainers and those who are transitioning to maintenance. As always, please let me or one of the other leaders know if you have any questions.

after i signed on to the maintenance hall of fame list in june i decided to go for another 5 lbs which i have since lost for 20 lbs total now, instead of 15, two months later - is there any way to change that? I finally got Google Docs to show the NAMES of the maintainers in this graph! So now you can see all of us in a scatterplot, graphed according to how much weight we lost, and how long we've kept it off. You can hover over a point with your mouse to see the specific data about someone.

I used a logarithmic scale for the horizontal axis because it spreads out the data and makes it easier to see the points that are close together.

Enjoy!

(I just LOVE watching these dots creep to the right, day after day, month after month, year after year, reflecting the people here ROCKIN' THEIR MAINTENANCE!)

P.S. If you'd like to get yourself onto this graph, sign up to celebrate your Maintenance Anniversary, here:

@KANOE10

We don't want to suggest a new blog post too soon via email because we don't want people to stop reading team emails... LOL

However, one thing we can all do on our own is to browse the team blogs and see what's there.
www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_recent_bl
og
s.asp?groupID=1111

(you can also get there by clicking the "blogs" link under the scrolling status thing on the right)
An advantage to this is that you'll be more likely to see blog posts relating to maintenance.

I encourage anyone reading a blog to "like" it if you think it's helpful, and tell everyone about it - on this team, on your other teams, anywhere there are people you think would find it interesting.

If enough of us get into this habit, good blog posts will naturally percolate up to "popular" blog status without the team leaders advertising them. I think it takes about 25-30 votes for that to happen. There are more than enough of us here to make that happen.

Never, ever, EVER give up!

Interesting topic. The statistics ARE very bleak for people to maintain weight loss. I think because sometimes people think of a diet as just something to do temporarily. They cut out everything and go hard core, lose the weight, then forget about sticking to their healthy habits. Keeping those habits (hopefully including exercise, clean eating, and portion control), should lead to successfully keeping that weight off!

Good blog!

Yea, I saw how only one *non maintainer* posted in the announcement thread. That's why I thought the WooHoo section was a bit too secluded for us. Also the people swinging in there to post, are there to give their own shout out, so they're not really thinking about much else.

Hmm, lets keep thinking on this a bit more. There's no rush and I think it's best to come out of the gate in the right way, that is appealing to both the 'losers' & the new (or soon to be) maintainers. I really do like the additional wording you added to our team name, as it gives us a more inclusive feel to those people not quite yet at goal.

Transitioning IS one of the hardest times, IMO. I had a terrible time finding out just how to stop thinking it's all in the *losing* and just enjoy learning how to stay put. I'm still learning, 2 years later.

I'm pretty sure it would be easy to add a link to the Cafe anniversaries thread into LJR4HEALTH's template, too. That way when she announces the individual anniversaries over here, it will be easy for us to click over to that thread and make comments, too.

Just a thought.

We can also make you a Team Leader, and that way you can email the team about the anniversaries of the month with a link over to the thread at the Cafe.

My hope is that people who aren't even on the team yet will chime in over there and that it will help raise awareness of the team and the importance of acknowledging these anniversaries.

It might not work - only one person who isn't already on our team said anything in the woo-hoo thread I made. It might just be that people over in the community forums are too worried about loss to care yet about maintenance in that way. I kind of see this as an experiment, to see what works, and what doesn't...LOL If no one in the community forums cares enough to say anything about our maintenance anniversaries then perhaps it isn't worth posting them over there.

The individual announcements LJR4HEALTH does over here are more for our own within-team communication purposes, and they seem to be working well, for that.

I wouldn't mind..if it's not too terribly technical, as I'm pretty limited on my computer usage. Copy and paste is my specialty, though! emoticon

What about waiting till we get the team lined up in agreeing to help keep the thread up and active. Just don't want it to appear too vacant, that no one wants to add some posts into it. Its never fun talking to yourself! emoticon

Sure, why not?!

Sounds like you know your way around the community message boards pretty well...

Would you be willing to head up that project?

4A-HEALTHY-BMI ~ I'm wondering if, maybe, the WooHoo section of the board is not the most visible place, as I noticed just how quickly the posting dropped down into the listing. What about the Cafe section? This is more visible (as it's the 1st board grouping) and we could just turn the created thread into a long term and ever building one.

I've seen just random threads being created in that section of the board and they remain to be quite active. It's just a thought. Oh, and maybe just tittle the thread more as a whole maintenance place, rather than a monthly one, this way others can just add in their own maintenance stats, as they wish to. Then have THIS team be the *go to place* to get advice, support and tips.

**As a team, we could each take turns in keeping the thread up towards the top. Kinda like another way to 'huddle'.** emoticon

Good ideas for changing the team name. I didn't want to take away the "At Goal and Maintaining" part because there are so many references to it out there from past blogs and posts etc. and didn't want people to hunt for it and not find it.

So I added the "+ Transition to Maintenance" part (we're limited on characters so I did the best I could)

I'm also adding a sticky thread in the Introduce Yourself section just for transition questions, etc.

Thanks for the ideas!

It worked! My blog is now on the Popular Blog main page--thanks everyone! I hope people will not just copy it but use it as a template to come up with their OWN Maintenance plan.

One thought on visibility: I know I was hesitant to join this team because I wasn't yet at goal. I bet other people feel that way, too--like joining would make them a fraud or impostor.

But I know for me, thinking about maintenance while I'm still losing weight was really important. I think it's dangerous to get to goal and not have a plan, because at that point it's easy to gorge, go up, and then throw up your hands and say, "Well, there's no way I'm going to keep this weight off so I might as well give up." Being exposed in advance to people who are doing it successfully is like an inoculation.

So, in those invitations to "regular" teams, maybe say very prominently, "Even if you're not at goal yet, we still welcome you. It's great to have people on the team who are committed to lifetime maintenance, even if you're still losing weight."

My thought for the day. Going on vacation soon so I'll be out of the loop, but looking forward to coming back and checking in. Love the great positive energy on this team!

Maybe we could change the name of our team to "Maintenance At Goal". Might make it easier for people to find since most people think of it as Maintenance.

On another thread GOING4HEALTHY made a great suggestion that we start piping up on the main message boards. I love this idea. So I'm reposting my response over here so we can find the links more easily.

As a start, I've posted our August maintenance anniversaries over at the "Woo Hoo! Button to Celebrate Success!" board:
www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/messageb
oa
rd.asp?imboard=33&imparent=28530071

I think something like this might help spread the message that maintenance is hard but doable.

Would anyone be interested in handling these posts once a month? I've formatted the maintenance anniversaries spreadsheet so you can just cut and paste the names and page links. A template can be used for the rest of the message. What do you think? Is anyone up for this?

Another thing we can do is to browse those boards for people seeking help in maintenance.

Here is a link to message board posts containing the word "maintenance"
tinyurl.com/SP-boards-maintenance
And here's a search for the word "maintain"
tinyurl.com/SP-boards-maintain
"yo-yo"
tinyurl.com/SP-boards-yo-yo
"regained"
tinyurl.com/SP-boards-regained

There are lots of folks on there asking for help and support on how to maintain, transition into maintenance, etc.

Most of them are not on this team. One simple thing we can do is congratulate the ones who have gotten to goal and invite them to the team using the link on the front page and their Spark ID.

It would also probably be friendly and helpful to respond to their queries. When we respond it might be useful to mention the At Goal and Maintaining team so they can find us if they have more questions. We have a simplified link you can paste into the box that comes up when you click the "Add a Link" button:

LORILEEPAGE welcome to the team. One thing is to watch those portions and keep your trigger foods in check.
I am on my 43 day streak of no desserts as I can't have only one. I just cant stop once I start. What is your trigger food?

I just found this team by reading something someone said about it in a secrets of success comment. I was just beginning to think about the need for support and planning for my nearing goal attainment. I maintained a 65 pound weight loss for 6 years before I gained back 15. That was before I knew about SP. With SP I've relost the 15 pounds and now am hoping to enjoy maintaining my 140-145 weight, and have some companionship to spur me on. Before, I maintained my loss with continuing to track food, which is what I've done since the year 2000, when I first lost 65 pounds. Tracking is where it's at. But my motivation for exercise ebbs and flows. That's probably where I could use help. I have no idea what kind of "tools" would actually help us with maintaining. I think I'd like to hear some specific ideas from any of you about what kind of tools would help us.

Thanks for your support, RUSSLANE. 4A's shared some of her frustrations with me but maybe some of our new tactics will help us gain some traction. If not, at least we'll have done some good for our members here and can cast a wider web for our team so that more people approaching maintenance know where to find us.

Awesome idea. I'll be honest though: historically neither 4A or I have been very successful in making the PTB pay more attention and after A LOT of e-mails and conversations. So I'm skeptical if they'll be interested or not.

I said skeptical in *them,* not us. Never us. That said, getting more folks fired up is what's needed. And maybe those guys will finally see the light.

Onward and keep it up!

Great idea, periwinkle's blog was excellent!! I only disagree with the restrictive shake diet. I simply feel its not necessary. In spite of my health challenges, I mananged to take off and maintain my weight eating normal healthy meals exercising moderation in all things and strict portion control with accurate weighing and measuring and tracking. I denied myself nothing and am happy and content. Being vegetarian my meals consist of mainly freggies anyway so that already gave me a leg up, but other than that is normal.
I do hope that blog becomes popular because she put out so many great ideas!!
Happy Maintaining all!

We think that maintenance-specific tools and support systems could go a long way toward helping new people prepare for maintenance and keep our current maintainers going when difficulties intervene. How can we help other people prepare for maintenance if they don’t know what they're facing or that we exist? As a team, we'd like to improve our overall visibility on SparkPeople.com, which we hope will garner the attention of other users of the site as well at the site's management, who can help us to develop additional tools and resources on the macro level.

We've been recently discussing ways to accomplish this in the forums and we think that highlighting some of our members' accomplishments could be a good first step. One of our ideas is to highlight well-written maintenance-oriented blog posts and “like” them if we agree that they would be helpful for the community to see--if they receive enough votes, they will show up in the “Popular Member Blog Posts.” A recent example is PERIWINKLE88’s Maintenance Plan:

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
ur
nal_individual.asp?blog_id=5015442

Let’s see if this works. If you have time, please visit her blog post and if you agree that it would be helpful to people who are considering the transition to maintenance, please “like” it!

I hope that you'll join us in working to change the bleak statistics maintainers face and develop more support for ourselves as well as new maintainers.
