Jennifer, you can see it between the USA and other nations too... I go to Chile for work several times a year. When I first started going 12-13 years ago, you NEVER saw anyone overweight, just a lot of trim people. That was the case even 5 years ago... now they have imported our habits and you can see quite a few large Chileans. It is amazing (and sad) to see it happening so very quickly to a nation that has been in relatively good health until now.

I've backslidden... I reached my goal and was now maintaining, but now I need to lose 10 pounds and firm up.

It's interesting what you say about the size people used to be. I teach U.S. History. I show some videos that have real footage and then they quickly cut to a reenactment. It is so obvious in these videos how big we have become. The difference in the size is amazing! The soldiers from the turn of the century look tiny compared to the present day actors. It seems we (as a nation) took good nutrition too far and don't know when to stop. Anyway, I think all you can do is try to educate people that it is okay to be small and healthy.

How many should I list?

I just rise above it - I say nice things and respond politely but I am going to be honest with you chaps and chapesses and admit.....

I feel like saying....

"What is it that you suddenly feel you have the right to judge me and question my weight now I'm thin but I didn't hear you telling me to stop stuffing myself because I was overweight?"

I am not getting on my box, but I feel so strongly about this... really ... what is it that people suddenly feel it's their right to enter into a conversation with you, judging you and questioning your ability to look after yourself?

For me there are really personal issues like...

What if I had cancer?
What if I had an eating disorder?
What if someone had died and I was grieving and the stress had caused the weight loss?

So, (caaaaaaaallllllllllm - aaaahhhh - that's better) yes I have had more than anyone's fair share of having to justify myself and explain that my BMI is slap bang in the middle of 'HEALTHY' and that the reason they are in shock is because as a nation we are losing all memory of what a truly healthy human being looks like.

love Paula

My mom is the worst one too. Then the Red Hat group where I am the youngest, as a pink hat, is full of "mothers" and drive me crazy. Ok, to clarify, I do red hat for the free meal from my mom once a month and the company of my aunts. hey, a girls gotta eat. IEspecially if they are all gonna bug me about it,lol. This last one I had cheese cake for dinner. I had a good dinner before I went and had the calories to spend. It backed them down a bit, giggle.

I think the most annoying comments come from my own mother.

My SIL has always been thin. High school, when she first met my brother, is when she was "fluffiest." But my brother was already into weight lifting, which she quickly joined in - so she slimmed down and has always looked like a "tiny little thing" despite being several inches taller than me.

This past year she got super serious about her lifting and without changing dress size, she put on 10 pounds of muscle. So now at any given time she weighs 10-15 pounds heavier than me.

Fully clothed, she doesn't look any different. So one day in conversation with my mom, she says, "Well, it's official. Lori now weighs less than I do."

Without missing a beat, my mom says, "Well then she's gotten crazy about this whole diet thing. Pretty soon she's going to disappear if she doesn't stop losing!"

[sigh]

Whatever.

Thank you all so much for the discussion! What a great group we have here!! I feel better now than I did in my 20s and I am looking the best of my whole life since babies! (Ok, so, I should be a little modest!) But I am glad to ahve this forum where we can see that we are doing the right thing and that it IS something we can do for life!

Have a great day!

Hi Paraven,
Thank you for posting that question. I have interactions like that All. The. Time. and it's been on my mind a lot recently.

Where I work, we have a few annual community events, so like you, there are times when I'm starting to see people who I haven't seen in a while. (That time, incidentally, is now.) Most of them are really nice, but I have gotten a few "Are you OKAY!?!?"'s and "Was this on purpose?" My not-so favorite (from a board member) is: "Eat a cheeseburger!" which she tells me every single time I see her.

Sigh. I'm 5'6.5" and my current weight lands me smack in the middle of the healthy BMI range. I like the way I look now, and more importantly, I like the way I feel.

A friend of mine brought up a good point when I was explaining this phenomenon to her: Weight loss is such a personal issue for people, especially women, and seeing someone who has succeeded can remind people that they could do it, too, if they were willing to make some changes in their lifestyles. Especially if people have struggled with weight issues in the past, this could trigger some negativity. It helps me to remember that that negativity has everything to do with them, and nothing to do with me really.

Also, I think that people have a hard time seeing someone change. I think that we tend to put people in categories based on 1st impressions, and any change throws our assumptions out of whack. That might play a part as well...

The important thing is that you know you are living healthier. :)

Love it sitting Turtle. I have been tempted a couple of times. I went to my regional meeting yesterday and saw people I haven't seen since mid-September. It was a long afternoon. Most were complimentary and said I really looked good. A few were a bit sharp edged. It will be nice when spring comes and people can really see the hard work. I work outside with plants so shorts and sleeveless are normal. Maybe then people will see the muscle and realize I am not so boney.

I'm 5'4" - hover around 123. Yup - I get the comment often. You're getting too thin! Stop losing weight!

Ummm, excuse me - I've lost exactly two pounds in 12 months and I'm no longer "dieting." I'm now exercising, which is going to make me look smaller despite the weight either not changing or actually going up.

I think the next time somebody tells me I'm too thin I'm going to reply "no, the rest of America is too fat so your perception of reality is skewed."

I've also had people tell me I'm too skinny, but mostly in a joking way. From hearing some of your stories, it's just a shame that people need to be so rude. I agree that they're probably jealous. I checked out some of your SPs, and you all look fantastic!

It is. I went on a business trip last fall and caught sight of myself in a window as I was walking down the concourse. I was shocked to see what looked like a tall slender woman walking. I remembe being absolutely blown away that it was me. Now I'm not all that tall, but the proportions were not at all as I saw myself. It was a very happy day. LOL... It isn't often that you realize tha you look BETTER than you thought you did. LOL

Perception of yourself is a hard one to get used to. I still look at my pants when I fold them and think do I really fit into those? I did weigh in yesterday and need to do some work. I worked out less, 12 miles vs 18-22 I usually run, ate more and lost 3.5. I am feeling a bit boney.

I think its true that others we know have to get used to the change..and recognize its there to stay. I haven't had too many people say I am too thin, but, I have been referred to as 'so tiny' and 'slim', adjectives not formerly used to describe me. Most people I talk to who didn't know me before I got this way are totally shocked to hear my total weight loss, and blown away by my before and after photo's. The biggest change for me is now even I see a very small person when I look in the mirror so my brain has caught up. I realize also if I were to gain 5 lbs it wouldn't even put me at all over weight.

Robin

I think it's a good thing...a great club we belong to...I don't see one weight/goal number in this thread that looks out of whack with the height.. I have bumped in to some others on SP who really are striving for a goal putting them in the too thin range.

I've had a couple of people comment that I looked too thin, but I'm 5'4" and 124, which is well within range. More people have had positive comments.

Like someone commented, I got more of the negative comments from surprised people who hadn't seen me in a while. I just reply that I am in the healthy range, and that I was feeling stronger and healthier than I before. They get over it.

In my case, it helps that I'm clearly more mobile, since the exercise has gotten me away from using my cane as much as I was before.

I have had two people recently say exactly the same thing to me. Give me a break! I'm 5'2.5" (I need to claim the .5 emoticon ). I weigh 127 lbs.

One told me I was getting too thin recently (I've lost less than a pound in the last 3 months), and another told me I was looking ill.

I could only respond by saying, "well, my doctor is happy with my current weight, so I guess that's all that really matters." I was horribly offended. I've worked darn hard to get this weight off, and it just took some of the wind out of my sails.

Good for you, saying something to that horribly rude woman. I hope she refrains from saying something like that again in the future because of your confronting her.

So you think you're too busy to work out. Well... what fits better into your schedule... working out one hour a day, or being fat 24 hours a day?

Care to hear from someone that's not been around lately?

I've been maintaining for about 5 months and people are STILL telling me I'm losing too much weight! I think my skin is still absorbing itself some, but others are, like Shani said, not used to seeing me smaller.

Laura - you are my idol - stopping and standing up for yourself to someone - too cool!

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement Shani. You look pretty awesome yourself and have done great!

I did feel for her. She was most likely unhappy about her own appearance and takes it out on others. Who knows. Maybe I helped her. I would like to think that my retaliation may have sparked something in her or someone who may have overheard it. I am just not one to sit back in a situation like that.

Laura, amazing that perfect strangers would say something like that. I'm glad you actually said something to her. Maybe she won't do that to the next person. :) And it was probably having to deal with her inadequacies that she even said something... *sigh*

HI Paraven. Yes! I am very tired of people telling me I am too thin. I am only 5'2" for gosh sakes. I am also getting a nice muscular build going that with winter no one can see. I have had more rude comments in the last month and I am tired of it. According to 3 weight indexes I am in a healthy bracket. Why do people feel so free to comment?

I actually had an experience in a restaurant where I heard a stranger say, very loudly as I passed, that I must be on my way to the bathroom to throw up. Can you imagine. Just a snap judgement. I did stop and inform her that just because I was small didn't mean I wasn't all muscle and would be happy to show her my strength. She blushed a very lovely shade of red.

My family is getting used to it. Well, not my mom. But I feel good and I know that to me I look good and I am learning that what I see and feel is what matters. I have entered my first 1/2 marathon as a result of my lifestyle change. Let them eat crow on that!

I think people have a hard time adjusting to what you look like thin. I had people tell me I was too thin all the time for a good 2-3 months, then they stopped. I did gain back another 2-3 pounds from there and have softened my features a bit, so it may be that but yesterday I had someone say that I could be a model. Shoot, that was a huge compliment (and no, I couldn't, but it was nice for her to say it, you know?). Anyhow, it is interesting how the same people could say I'm too thin and then turn around and say I'm looking awesome...

Give them a chance to adjust their perceptions of you and then they'll stop saying all of that. By the way, I took a look at your page, and you look awesome! And your daughters are beautiful (and the spitting image of you). :)

Hello All - In my AF reserve job, I see some people just once a month and so, they notice changes in my weight more than people I see more often. It seems that people think I am getting too thin and I have to explain to them that I have lost all the weight I want to and that I am now building muscle and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Has anyone had any experiences with people thinking you are getting too thin? I mean, I am NOT 100 pounds and I eat ALL the time, so I know I do not have any sort of eating problem. If I stay at 121, I will be happy! So, while I know I an very healthy, people's perceptions seem to be off.

What do you think?

I love this quote from Master and Commander, "Name a shrub after me, Be sure it's something prickly and hard to eradicate." Determination will win the day!
