If eating all food groups in moderation works for you, great! For me that is not the case. Maybe if I had never overconsumed sugar and processed foods when I grew up things would be different but these unnatural ways of eating have affected me by messing with my insulin levels and probably several other hormones. Eating low-carb keeps insulin levels low and avoids any of the problems brought on by insulin spikes.

On the contrary, I think being on a diet that restricts entire food groups to be very difficult to stick to long term. Restricting myself inevitably leads to nagging cravings, which leads to triggers, which leads to binges. I'm a firm believer of moderation being the key.

Denise,
any diet will only work as a lifestyle diet. If you stop using it it will stop working. The beauty with Atkins, paleo and other low-carb diets is that they are very easy to stay on for life. It is not necessary to count calories because you will not be hungry and tempted by sweat things to overeat. Any cravings I used to have for bread and other grain-products disappeared within a week. At least that's my experience. As far as "the good stuff" I guess it depends on the person what that is. Any healthy life style diet will require you to give up or severely restrict sugar, white flour and other empty calories. With low-carb you don't have to limit fat at all which makes it possible to eat as much as you are hungry for and still lose the weight. I get to enjoy steaks and any kind of meat, eggs, heavy cream, butter, coconut oil, any vegetables and nuts in unlimited quantities. I do limit fruit to one or two pieces a day because it has a lot of sugar.
Being able to eat whenever I feel hungry, which is rarely more than 3 times a day any more, sure works for me. Not having to worry about snacks saves me a lot of time as well.
I found that I don't even have to count carbs any more, because by skipping grains and beans and limiting fruit I automatically get the right amount of carbs. emoticon

I looked at it, but I don't know what the paleo diet is, and my experience with the Atkins diet was that I gained the weight back after I went off it. SP is a better diet for me because it keeps going after I lost the weight and I don't have to give up all the good stuff.

I started SP at 138 lbs in October 2010. My goal weight was supposed to be 125, which I reached in January 2011. I have stayed at 125 (give or take a few pounds) ever since.
