KIMPARKER - I haven't tried it, but I will now. I'm always looking for good glute exercises.

Thanks!

Has anyone here tried the "Genie Sit" move from SP? I think it is tougher (more intense) than the glute press machine at the gym.

My son watched me doing this yesterday, and couldn't figure out why I was fighting so hard to complete two sets, when the actual movement is so small. Then, I challenged him to do it - and he fell over.

It's good to be back to doing strength exercises again!

Way to go, girls!
Sarah~I think you could just check with local gyms in your area and see what they info they can give you on getting your own p.t. I hope you can find one!

Today I biked 5 miles, walked 3 miles and did 30 minutes of aerobics. I also did some strength training (abs and arms/back).

Hey everyone. I got in 40 minutes on the elliptical, 15 minutes of upper body strength training, and 5 minutes of abs.

Goodnight.

Yesterday, I selected some better-for-me SP strength training exercises and I really REALLY felt it, like I was supposed to yesterday.

Er, today... back to the old grind, but I'm now more confident about attempting strength training.

Anyone have any ideas how to find a personal trainer? I really ought to get one to get me started on appropriate exercises with my arthritis.

Great job, Colleen! I wish I could try an elliptical-everyone raves about them!

Today I got in 8.5 miles on my bike, 2 miles of walking and 35 minutes of high int. aerobics.
Hope you all had a great day!

Thanks for the pep talk, Shani! I've had the experience before of a workout being hard for a week and then fun after that so I'll give it a try! Thanks again.

I got in 50 minutes on the elliptical yesterday and a 55 minute walk/jog on Sunday. Today I plan on going to the gym for 1 hour - will split that time between elliptical and strength training. I really need to get back into exercising, and I'm thinking this thread will hold me accountable.

I'll let you in on a secret... TJ looks a lot harder than it really is. :) And the great thing is that it is a lot of fun so it motivates you to really get into it. I'd say the first week is the hardest and after that the workouts are intense but they don't kick your butt. ;) I'd really recommend them. I've never stuck to a workout before but I've been working out faithfully since I started TJ back in May! (and you're talking to a real couch potato).

Yesterday I biked 2 miles in the morning and then walked one mile in the afternoon. After dinner I did 35 minutes of high int. aerobics.
I am wanting to add another intense video/DVD to my collection and I'm thinking of either the BL #1 workout or a Turbo Jam video. T.J. intimidates me a little, I have to admit. I don't really WANT to have my butt kicked!

I upped the resistance on my exercise bike yesterday and I'm happy to report that my knee isn't as sore as it has been! Woohoo! (I have a case of arthritis and I tend to baby my right knee because I hate when it hurts worse than usual, but I need to build strength!)

I worked out to Turbo Jam this morning (Punch, Kick and Jam) and yesterday I did 80 minutes of strength circuit training (Slim Series - Sculpt It!). Man, am I sore! I couldn't put enough intensity into my workout today so my numbers were a bit low. That is ok but surprised me. :) I may have to buy the Slim Series (I borrowed it from a friend to see how I liked it).

Got on the glider for the first time after some minor surgery - did 45 minutes, not bad. I can't do any abdominal exercises for a week, but will continue to do upper body strength exercises.

Sorry, I meant stability ball in all instances. For the second one, try this. Imagine no ball, doing a squat, and then as you are coming back up, lifting one leg up and moving the arm on the same side back (kind of like a side crunch). When the leg comes up you don't lift it to the side straight out, it is more like twisting to the side and moving your elbow to slightly behind your hip. You might be able to see some examples on www.beachbody.com and then go to the TurboJam section. There is a video running on it where you can see some of the moves. This is a common one and kind of looks like a less intense version of what the woman on the top of the page is doing (she's the creator of TJ, Chalene Johnson). The only difference is that you add the medicine ball between the knees while doing it which works the inner thigh (plus the core).

There is another video on the Get on the Ball Workout page (the drop down menu at the top right has several TurboJam options and each one has a video on it). The ball one shows some moves you can do using your ball, but doesn't show the one I'm talking about.

I think I can picture the first exercise, not sure I can imagine the other. (Nor would I want to be videotaped doing either!) Question, though - for that first exercise, am I using the stability ball or the exercise ball? You mention both. If both are involved, I really don't understand.

Thank you!

Oh yeah... LOL Turbo Jam has a new move using the stability ball. Straddle the ball so that you you can still squat. Squat straddling the medicine ball while squeezing inward with your knees. It totally works the inner thigh and in fact you'll probably be sore for quite awhile after doing a few sets of 8. You can also squat while squeezing your knees and when you come up, lift one leg (more like lifting with your hip) while still keeping the ball pinned between your knees. I'm not sure how to help you visualize it but it is VERY effective.

Thanks, Shani.

I've got handweights in 5 and 8, a stability ball, a medicine ball and now some resistance bands. The medicine ball came with a good workout from Gaiam, plus I found several really challenging ab exercises on SP - especially the genie sit, and a side plank move - ouch!

I think now I can see how to hit all the areas most important to me, except for the inner thighs. Any specific exercises you (or anyone) can think of to address that?

Thanks!

I've tried to read on the bike (we have one too) but the motion leaves me dizzy LOL.

KMParker, I workout at home and do great. I have 3 sets of dumbbells (3,5,8), a stability ball and a step. I use a few tapes. For strength I use Turbo Jam (Turbo Sculpt, Total Body Blast, Kickin' Abs, 3T, Lower Body Jam) and Transfirmer (Supercharged Sculpting, and Aerobic Body Shaping) videos. They keep me pretty entertained and the results show. I do it first thing in the morning and it works pretty well. :)

Shani, wouldn't that be a change! It's funny - my coworker and I were discussing our exercise (our workplace puts on a six week "contest" - of a sort - every year, and my coworkers and I all signed up) and she said "oh, I exercise three days a week" and I mentioned that I do five. "REALLY?"

Of course, for me, it's the ultimate get-away. I use a recumbent bike, read a book and pedal my heart out. It lets me read, which I never do enough of, and keeps me healthy! Score!

Though, I'm finally starting to work my way into strengthening exercises... and like the biking, I'm starting slowly to make it a habit.

Weird. Exercise, a habit?! When will I get used to saying that!

Our family life is undergoing some changes in routine and schedules, and it's harder for me to get to the gym.

How many of you do your strength exercising just at home, and how happy are you with the results? I think this is the direction we may be going in.

We have some free weights, a balance ball, and the ab lounger.

Sundays are one of my big exercise days since I tend to have so few demands on my time. That said, I've been feeling like I'm slogging through my biking, physically.

I realized, today, that I've been working harder - pedaling harder - than before, so of course my exercise is going to be harder on me!

That said, I'm still looking forward to my "day off" tomorrow. However, since we're a one car family and my husband needs the car, I'll be taking the bus, which requires walking to and from the stops.

I'm surprised that it's been almost 14 months of regular exercise for me. Me! I self-describe me as sedentary by nature! This is a very cool change!

I'm feeling so sluggish in comparison to the two of you! I was supposed to work out this morning but decided to get a full 8 hours of sleep instead. Then I planned to workout this afternoon but I'm so stinkin freezing that I can't see changing into my workout gear... I'm planning on pigging out this afternoon (my family bought a cookie dough ice cream cake from Baskin' Robbins and we are planning on pizza). So I really need to get with it. Anybody want to guilt me into it? I feel like watching a recorded show and figuring out the next few weeks of menus instead. Is that bad? Maybe it is my birthday present to myself... I'm always running.

This is my day of rest - I really don't plan anything for today and as the sun goes down, I don't think I will. But tomorrow, it's off to the gym for a good 40 mins of cardio!! As you know, I am in this wierd pattern but it's working for me! I had to pin the sides of my slacks for church this morning because they were too big and didn't have belt loops. And these are NEW pants I bought since losing weight! So, all is well!

Today, I hauled a huge amount of um, archived possessions (junk), from my basement to recycling, to the trash, and to the storage room in my office. No other cardio needed today, I think.

Moving things around may be my main cardio exercise until after the move.

I'm all set to do my strength exercises during the commercial breaks of the Saints game today. I'm from New Orleans originally, and grew up with the fact of life that it was a losing team - beloved, but losing. I SO can't believe they're this close to the Superbowl!

When I'm not doing strength exercises, I'll be knitting or drinking herb tea - this is my strategy for not snacking through 3 hours of TV football. Keep the hands busy.

This is for Wednesday:

I did some strength exercises at home, walked to get the neighborhood kids at school, and put some time in on the glider.

I posted on your other thread but no harm posting again!

Today I have a 50 minute water aerobics class with my mother at the indoor pool - very cold here today in PA! Tomorrow is a strength training day with my new program - heavy weights, fewer reps. I am working a half day tomorrow and will go to they gym when I am done. I hope to schedule some time with the fitness center manager (who teaches the water aerobics) so that I can make sure I am doing the program the right way. She will do a one-time consult for free to get me set up on a new program. It's not quite like a personal trainer, but almost!

Don't get me wrong - I've done no exercise yet today. Unless you count going up and down the stairs 10 times to get the kiddo ready for school and fed. (I'm planning to work out later today.) But having this thread on the list may prod me to be more consistent, so I have something to post about.

How about the rest of you?
